Samsung video player uses twframework to work you cant get it work on cm10.1 and cm10.1 is still not stable so hd video cant be played on cm10 it was same for me it was laggy too laggy you better use samsung jb custom rom
I would also like to do the same thing. I like the samsung video app because it also has the option to turn video off on a timer (sleep timer). Great for watching a movie in bed.
I tried deodexing using this great tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2213235
but it still wont install on CM 10.1
I'm doing this on a Tab 2 10.1
Shame!

Any recommendations for which player to use when playing back mkv movies files?
The built in video player doesn't have sound, and the few others I tried had either the same result or gave me an error about wrong version of android.

Try VLC or MX Player, both got ton of codex.
Mx player is what I use for my yify mp4 and mkv files, works like a champ. If you install adaway mx player is ad free.

That's odd... Isn't Android supposed to support them natively as of Honeycomb or ICS?

BSPlayer is my go-to player on both Nexus 7 (1st gen) and GNex, so I would assume you'll get good results with it.

Free version has no sound too. It's one of my favorite players as well.

I tried MX Player first, while it lets me install, it tells me I have the wrong version of android when I launch it.

Achos video for MKV and others
BS player no sound too, and not acces to local network so ...... with Achos Video player (free) and the codecs (free to), no more issue : sound with MKV and acces to my local network. If other problem of codec buy the MPEG codecs package

Both seem to work about equally well on my N7,
Dice Player has played any file I've given it, including mkv with dts.

Try diceplayer or mxplayer on the playstore.
The stock player can't reproduce ac3 sound.
Sorry for my english.....
MX player is free and works as does Archos player, also free. Both can be found on the play store. You may need to also get the Archos free codecs and if you want DTS sound in MX then you need to download the custom codec (there is a link in MX player)...
Yes MX-video player will do the job but
Samsung video player on my note 2 can play mkv file with no issue. So there must be away to make it work.

mkv is just the container, samsung dropped ac3 support. You can strip the audio & remux or do as others suggested and use a software based player.
I used to use MX player but recenty found out clueful privacy advisor indicate it has the potential/risk of leaking the device unique ID. Currently using super video player/Gplayer using software decoder to be able to hear audio during video playback.
Dice Player gets my vote its excellent, but you need "libffmpeg.so" for DTS audio which I added in the thread below.

Lets not forget XBMC if you want the full media center experience
Talk about XBMC. I also have audio problem. I can get it plays any movie but bad audio meaning I can hear sound but too much static... Is there any setting I need to do.
Xbmc 12.3 on Note 10.1 2014 and Note 2 same problem.

Which is why I'm rooted, have xPosed framework installed and added xPrivacy....
If I were you I would skip the usual trash on market and go for VLC instead. Its free and opensource with excellent reputation of being the swiss knife of media players. Recently the authors made a sustained effort to bring it from PC to iOS and android.
Beta version is available on the market and fresh apk nightlies can be downloaded from their servers http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/android-armv7/.
Even though still in beta, everything except hit and miss harware acceleration works.
Do I need any additional codecs for dice Player?

No, unless your viewing something with DTS audio then you need "libffmpeg.so"
Ok, I just used the file from MX Player....I guess that didn't work.
Picked the file from your link now.
About MX Player. In LBE Security there isn't anything listed concerning the ID. Do you guys have anything to read up on this issue?

You can try diceplayer or mxplayer on the playstore. However, someone says they may miss audio when playing MKV on Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 with it. If you plan to put and watch MKV movies on Galaxy Note 10.1 2014, converting MKV to MP4, which is the most suitable format for Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 playback, may be the best method.

On MX you need to set audio decoding via software but sound works fine for MKV's...
Mx player can play anything. If it doesnt then just get the right codec. If it doesnt exist just write the right codec.

I use archos and it works flawlessly. There is a set of free codecs for it and the additional network capabilities made it my go to.

Lots of **** players being recommended here.
VLC Player is the only correct answer.

thanks , how about music player for this tab ?
I don't really use it for music, but I used to use playerpro on my phone, but not free, also N7 player is highly recommended.
I recommend PowerAMP. Works a treat for Music. MX player is best for video with VLC coming up a close second.

Some tab s owners were falling over themselves about this audio software, it`s not a player, I tried the Windows version and did not like it, but android might be ACE.
