GPS Problems - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

My fiancee and I both have GS3's on AT&T. They're both still stock 4.1.1, neither is rooted.
We're both encountering a really annoying GPS problem. Randomly the GPS will stop working until reboot. Sometimes it will be in the middle of navigation. The lady just says "GPS signal lost" and then it won't lock anymore. Other times it will work for a route or two and then when opening up again it doesn't get an initial lock.
When it stops working there is no longer an ongoing notification with the status of the GPS or the GPS icon at the top of the screen. Maps is somewhat usable for just "directions" when we're in an area that cell tower and wifi AP triangulation works, but that only gets directions pulled up and it's off by several hundred feet.
Every time this happens, if you reboot it comes back to life. I'd rather not root or go the custom ROM route to fix this while we are both in warranty. This is her first Android phone and all I hear is "my iphone didn't use to do that. the GPS always worked".
I came across this thread http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/maps/q24Cq4sQAtc[1-25-false] on Google Groups, but no one really came up with a workable solution. It seemed to happen to at least both VZW & AT&T, but was fixed with VZW's 4.1.2 update.
Any ideas?

I have the same issue with mine. Nothing I've done has lasted. It's very annoying

I would look into doing a factory reset if that helps. And if you guys aren't rooted may just want look up Odin and stock firmware for your phones and restore with Odin, Odin helps if you're rooted and having gps issues to go back to stock..this option may or may not help

When all else fails, I would: backup your data, download odin and the latest at&t stock firmware (in Android development section), wipe data in stock recovery, flash firmware in odin, wipe data and cache in stock recovery, reboot.
This fixed my wife's s3. At&t is going to do this if you take it in anyways. If this doesn't work or last, I would return it.

I've tried reloading os. Worked for a few days then stopped.

I don't have much optimism in reflashing with ODIN accomplishing anymore than wiping /data and /cache (via factory reset) would on a non-rooted stock rom.
The /boot and /system partitions are mounted read only. When they were flashed from the kies upgrade from ICS tO JB the stock rom was written to them. So reflashing via ODIN would just be flashing identical data. Am I wrong?

In another thread someone talked about going into samsung service menu to enter a code that has fixed it. I'm going to try this and see if it resolves for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39156594&postcount=81

The code works, fixed me on 4.1, now on AOKP 4.2.2, no issues at all with GPS.
I'm a Motörhead and I approve this posting....using Tapatalk 2.

You can try a factory reset from the settings/backup& reset menu. Be warned that this may wipe your internal sd card.

I just tried the code. Noticed att nav updated after. See hoe google nav works tomr.

Broken GPS! Can't detect or lock on to satellites!

Hey guys,
I got this Samsung Galaxy SIII about a month ago and I don't think I have yet to get a gps lock with this phone. Unfortunately, I didn't try it until after rooting and installing a few different roms.
I unrooted and flashed a stock (bell) rom, factory reset, erase cache, etc. and I still do not know what's wrong with it.
Everything is checked in the "Locations" menu in settings...
I've tried Fasterfix, resetting AGPS from GPS status and GPS test; no dice.
Google navigation just stays in the "searching for your location" screen and it never finds my location.
I've even stayed outside with a clear view of the sky with WIFI and LTE and still couldn't lock on.
I also don't see a GPS icon when it's supposedly in use (my old HTC Desire had this).
I'm kind of speculating whether this is a hardware problem or the GPS somehow got disabled.
I searched and found out there are "secret" codes for the Galaxy SIII, including a GPS menu but it doesn't work with our model, unfortunately.
I'm kind of running out of ideas and trying to avoid sending the phone in. Any help would be great
--------------------------------------------EDIT!!!!!! FIX!!!!------------------------------------
I fixed it!! Special thanks to frelnik for his advice.
After un-rooting and flashing my original firmware/rom I still didn't get my GPS (no icon in status bar).
I rooted again: still no gps notification.
BUT
I flashed graffixnyc's Sprint based rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1956463
I immediately checked my GPS through Google's navigation and the GPS showed up again in the status bar. It eventually found my location!!
I nandroid back to my rooted stock rom and it remained! I can now lock on to 11 satellites from the basement of my home!
Special thanks to both graffixnyc and frelnik!

Did you at any point install a Sprint-based ROM?
If it doesn't work after the steps outline above (I had the same problem, and unfortunately that wasn't enough to fix mine), then flash back the Spring ROM you last used and see if the GPS is working. If it is, then use CWM to restore a stock Nandroid backup from before the problems started. That cleared it up for me, and now my GPS is working in all ROMs once again.
Michael
Yeah I have installed a Sprint-based rom.
Unfortunately I have already odin'd to the stock Bell version and factory reset'd, still doesn't work.
Because of that, I don't really have a nandroid anymore, it got deleted.
I'm gonna try rooting and flashing the Sprint one again (it was the one that was released just this month and ported to our version) and see how that works.

I can confirm that 1) Odin back to stock, 2) factory reset from phone's sytem settings will get gps back. I Odin'd back to stock rooted image and did the reset. Now running latest Ariel with gps lock within 5-10 seconds. I had run some of the sprint based roms and didn't even notice it was gone until I was on Serenity. Reflashing ATT rom wouldn't fix. I would assume you could get back to stock/working gps, then restore your backup (assuming not sprint based)
Guys I fixed it! Check OP!

Phone can't access mobile data, now stuck on activating..

I assume that the U.S. cellular version of this phone is a lot like the Sprint version, so I was hoping one of you could help me.
This has also been posted on the Team US Cellular forum: http://teamuscellular.com/Forum/topic/3446-phone-cant-access-mobile-data-now-stuck-on-activating/
I had been running my phone on Liquid Smooth for a day or two now, and today I turned on and off my phone a few times because I started to run low on battery and needed the phone later. Then, when I turned it on it said I was in recovery mode and all of my widgets were off of my homescreens. Now, the phone can't connect to mobile data or wifi so I cannot make phone calls, receive text messages or go on the internet. I then proceeded to attempt to wipe the cache, dalvik cache, and factory reset the phone through Clockwork Recovery, and when the phone booted up, it still could not connect to anything and now it is stuck on "Activating..".
At this point, I just want to return my phone to normal without root and get my service back. Could anyone please help me quickly? I need to use my phone by Monday... Thanks!
Also the phone signal thing has an R next to it, if that means anything to any of you all.
The "R" stands for Roaming, to into settings - mobile data - network operators - find your carrier. Hope that helps!
Sent with my Google Nexus 7 through the XDA Developers APP.
You need to flash a stock/stock-based ROM and follow the activation through
Then you can flash back or unroot, most likely what happened is that you either A) restored data (sometime gives weird problems) or B) didn't wipe completely/enough

This happened to me on sprint. They couldn't fix it and I had to exchange my phone for a new one
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I brought it into the store today and they didn't know what to do. They factory restored the phone again and managed to get signal (the signal bar as a triangle next to it), but whenever I try to activate the phone, it tries to activate it on Verizon. I did not flash the wrong rom, I know that. Is there any way to fix it right now or do I have to wait until tomorrow until I can take it to their tech guys at a different location? Thanks.

[Q] Sprint Galaxy Nexus; signal/3G issues

Sprint Galaxy Nexus
4.2.1
Not rooted
I performed a factory reset on my phone yesterday due to it bogging down and being rather slow. I never did a reset after getting the 4.2.1 update so I figured it was a good time. I woke up this morning, putzed around the house, and setup Tasker again. I laid my phone down for ten minutes while I got ready for work. Whenever I tried to wake my phone and nothing happened. I tried a few more times and the screen would not wake up. I pulled the battery, hard reset, reinserted battery and the phone wouldn't turn on. Then, I wiped the contact terminals (on the battery and the phone) and reinserted the battery and the phone booted up. However, since then I have had some major problems.
1. Power button does not always work properly. I have to press it several times to sleep or wake the phone. (Okay, not major, just inconvenient and probably unrelated to the issues below)
2. No data connection whatsoever.
3. In the data usage menu, there is no longer a data toggle switch.
4. Under the Network Mode option, LTE/CDMA produces absolutely no cell signal whatsoever. I have to switch to CDMA only. (WiFi works fine)
5. Toggling airplane mode, as some have suggested, does not cause the phone to connect to mobile data. Another factory reset did not restore mobile data. Rebooting did not restore mobile data.
6. All of these problems are true before and after factory reset. No new problems were created and nothing was exacerbated as a result of performing a factory reset.
I've been from one end of the internet to another looking for solutions to this problem and I have found that many are having a similar issue but toggling airplane mode or rebooting fixes it. Not the case for me. Most also seem to be having this problem after rooting. Again, not the case for me.
Any suggestions? I would prefer to not return the phone. Purchased from Radioshack and the 30-day warranty has expired. This is my second gnex already, as the first one's charging port broke. It took over a week to get this one from another store which graciously shipped it in to my store. There's also the issue of being broke and not really being able to afford another $30 activation fee on top of the deductible for a new phone.
Why not try reflashing the stock image and updating again to 4.2.1?

Not at all. You'd use Odin . Myself I have very spotty sprint signal in my home. Spoke to a corporate executive and they mailed me an AirRave free . Never have less then full bars 3g all around home. You should a- flash to stock using Odin following posts in sprint sextjon . b - call up and try to get an airavana.

Excellent. I will give it a shot at some point today or tomorrow and then let you know how it worked out. Thanks!
So, I restored the phone to stock. Signal is still non-existent on LTE/CDMA mode. Cannot perform Profile or PRL updates. Still no mobile data. I'm guessing hardware failure?
Also, on setup it asks for a SIM card. And at the bottom of the drop-down menu, it says "No SIM card|Sprint" or "No SIM card|No Service" depending on if I am in CDMA or LTE/CDMA.
Also, in the Status menu:
My phone number
Unknown
MIN
Unknown
PRL Version
Unknown
ICCID
Unknown
Seems a little odd to me.
Attempted fully rooting and flashing radios. No luck there either. It's also not wanting to update. Tells me my phone is up-to-date (connected via WiFi). Downloading Cyanogen now to see if it will work in the morning.
And while attempting to flash a new ROM, got the famous "can't copy anything to the device ever, under any circumstances" error.
Update: Got CM10 installed. Still "No SIM" error, no 3G, no data, no LTE. Found some more information on this No SIM error. Apparently a few others have had this same problem and in the end had to get a new phone.
Anyone know anything?
You should a- flash to stock using Odin following posts in sprint sextjon
I've been back to stock twice now. The first thing I did was flash to stock. Then I played around a bit and now I'm back to stock again.
Is there a difference between using Odin and Nexus Root Toolkit to return to stock?
Bump
Wow, one day and my thread is buried!
After battling for about a day, I got updated to JB 4.2.1, I can do profile and PRL updates again, but there is still no 3G/mobile data, and I still have zero bars on LTE/CDMA and have to use just CDMA. I am currently stock but the bootloader is unlocked, no root.
If anyone has heard any solution, please help. Also, if there's a difference between flashing to stock with Odin vs NRT, please say so.

Try fastboot flashing your LTE and CDMA radios again. As far as I know, fastboot commands do NOT require root. I had a similar issue.
Edit: link to post with directions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39446679
Sent from my R2-D2 unit on the far side of the moon
Indeed, fastboot does not require root. I've flashed my radios several times now in various different ways. I even flashed different versions. I attempted again but with no luck. I have normal service when using CDMA but nothing on LTE/CDMA. Still no data, still "No SIM card" error.
Pretty sure I'll have to get it replaced. I've gone from stock JB back to stock ICS, rooted, CM10, back to stock ICS, rooted, back to stock JB unrooted, and flashed three different radios. I'm surprised I haven't managed to brick it yet.
UPDATE: Sprint is sending me a new phone, for free.

Okay, I need some serious help with my phone.

After running on a stock ROM(but rooted /w TWRP), I decided that I wanted to install a custom ROM so that I could tether if needed. Well, big mistake. I wiped stock and accidentally wiped my stock backup when going to flash a custom ROM and so far I've tried XenonHD, Jedi X19, IllusionROM, and now I'm on a Stock-Tweaked. So far, every single ROM has caused massive delays in receiving SMS messages and syncs from stuff like gmail.
Data is definitely working, and i've tried both the epc.tmobile.com and fast.tmobile.com APNs but my phone keeps hanging when it trys to send some texts and, if I have texts "waiting" to be delivered to my phone, I only receive them once I turn on my phone screen or only if the screen is on. So what the hell is going on here?
Don't mess around with roms and flash the stock-root injected one via Odin.
Download goo to install latest twrp and then download stock ROM for your device, wipe first 4 options not internal or external and not otg USB at least 3 full wipes then flash stock ROM and wait and you should b good
I installed the stock rom via Odin and still having this issue. =/
It seems that if I go to 4G/3G/2G mode only the issue doesn't persist. Or at least not as much. But then I can't use LTE! =/
Call tmobile tell him you did a factory reset on your phone and that you're having this problem and they will reset the network on their side. This happened to me before in the past and a quick call to them fix my problem. Hope this helps

HELP! Having a bunch of connectivity issues.

Hey guys, i'm having a bunch of connectivity issues, all revolving around cell service. WiFi works greats. First issue is that text message get sent and received sporadically(meaning sometimes i send texts and they send right away, while other times they fail and require a few resends). Second issue is incoming calls not reaching my device(doesn't even ring on my phone) and going straight to voicemail after 2 rings/outgoings calls not ringing at all. Last and hopefully least, data seems to drop or hang on upload after a few minutes of use. Now all these issues occur sporadically and at seemingly random times, but it seems like once one of these 3 issues occur, they all get triggered.
I've checked and reset APN settings and they seem correct, although instead of "Not Set" for the username, there is "none" and there is a four digit password that has been censored by *, and for Server there is one digit *.
I've called T-MO customer service and their suggestion to solving it was a Master Reset, which is essentially a Factory Reset including wiping the Internal SD card. I've yet to do this, but i have tried a regular Factory Reset from TWRP, but the issue still persists. Not sure what to do at this point, was considering ODIN'ing back to stock(4.1.1 root66 to be exact).
If it matters, I'm running Dandroid 4.1.2, with DLJA baseband and stock kernel. Sometimes rebooting or flipping airplane mode on/off fixes it for a couple more minutes.
Any insight or suggestion would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
I had this problem on my Nexus 5 and it seems to be sorted out now. But I'd highly recommend ODINing to the latest stock if you change your baseband radio and you're still experiencing the same issue. (I'm also a T-Mobile customer)
Also, I recommend heading to the market and downloading Offline SIM APN Database to verify you have the entirely correct APN.
Hey, thanks for the swift reply. Firstly, i checked the offline sim database and my APN settings match those, so hopefully APN settings are out of the question. And by latest, are you referring to 4.3? Also, i don't think i've ever flashed a radio/modem of any kind, and my baseband has been DLJA since i first bought this phone ~1 year ago.
I believe so that 4.3 is latest.
Before flashing 4.3, make sure you Sim unlock the phone first.
It sounds to me like its probably one of the following causing your issues....
Bad SIM card
Network problems on T-Mobile's end
Corrupted firmware or data
Or just part of the actual hardware going bad
(Listed what I think is most likely first)
Go to a T-Mobile store and ask an employee if they can test your device with their sim, or better yet, since its random ask if they can just replace yours.
Call T-Mobile to ask if there are any known problems in your area. If not ask if they can reset your account.
Flashing firmware with Odin (not mobile odin) can help determine if it may be a hw or sw problem. I do recommend factory resetting with stock recovery though. This actually formats /data, where custom recoveries just selectively delete things.
If its still giving problems after all of the above, its a pretty good chance some piece of hw has gone bad.
Thanks the replies guys, I'll report back with some results. Just wanna add, I've tried my sister's S4 LTE Sim on my phone and the issue still seems to occur regardless.

Funny that I came across this. I was experiencing (seemingly) the exact same problem very recently. I even picked up a new SIM card, but that didn't fix it. I was beginning to fear it was hardware related. But like Doc suggested, I used ODIN to flash stock fw, and all is well again. It appears that my problem was related to data corruption. Thought I'd post to confirm returning to stock via ODIN fixed the issue for me - in case it happens to anyone else.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I'm still experiencing this problem. May I ask which Android version you ODIN'd? If 4.3, MJC or NC2? I've ODIN'd two firmwares, 4.1.1 LJA and 4.1.2 MD5. I've held back on doing 4.3 because I know after that, there is no way back. But if that fixes the issue, I'm all in. Thanks!

I used UVDLJA 4.1.1, and so far I'm free of the connection issue. I feel the same as you... don't want to flash 4.3 without being able to downgrade. I picked the LJA fw because that's what my phone shipped with, and the radio/bootloader combo always worked well for me. Sorry it hasn't worked for you! Maybe a stupid question, but did you factory reset after ODIN flashing?
Out of curiosity, did the issue resurface while you were still running stock fw? Or had you changed ROMs?

Yeah, I've factory reset from the stock recovery and had everything wiped. Well first the issue initiallly surfaced on the Dandroid 4.1.2 ROM, but I had ran that ROM for close to a year without any issues, then all of a sudden it happened. I ODINd the 4.1.1 and factory reset and at first I thought it worked but a few minutes later, the problem resurfaced, so to answer your question, yeah it still happened on stock fw. I may try it again just in case I take it in to a T-Mobile store.

Well since you ruled out the SIM card already, the 2nd part I mentioned would be my next suspect. (Network problems on T-Mobile's end. )
Is there any way you can get maybe 5-10 miles away from your usual locations and test there? (Remember to reboot after making it to a new location). If its still giving problems there, its very unlikely to be a tower problem. (Still possible, but very unlikely. ) Also, call T-Mobile support and ask if they can perform a reset on your account. (Can't remember what they call it exactly, but they should be able to take some sort of similar action on your account from their end.)
Finally, if you are still running 4.1.2 or 4.1.1 firmware, you can try flashing the different modems I have in my baseband thread. (Stickied in development). I can't remember right now if the 4.3 modems will work on the older firmware, but its ok to try them all. Once you update to 4.3 you can no longer use the older modems.
If, after all of that, you still are having trouble, you can pretty much rule out network problems. It'd still be a possibility, but only a very unlikely one.
After this, you might want to seriously consider flashing the MJC firmware, then NC2 if necessary. If none of that is helping I don't think there will be much more you can really do....
