I realize this will sound like sacrilege to many here, but I'm looking for an app that can be used to shrink the viewable portion of the screen.
Why?
There are certain times when I'm using the phone and don't need the full screen for the task at hand. Additionally, since the touchscreen extends so far to the edge of the device, there are times when I accidentally "press" the outer edges of the screen with the meaty portion of my thumb (i.e. holding the phone in my right hand, trying to tap something in the upper-left corner, my palm might hit the lower-right corner)
My further hope is that battery drain could be reduced while using this.
So does any app like this exist?
If not, would the creation of such an app be possible?
Is it possible to shrink what is being viewed to a smaller portion of the screen?
Is it possible to "turn off" touch functionality for certain areas (i.e. the outer edge) of the touchscreen, or is it all-or-none?

I know its possible to turn off the touch around the bezel, there is an app for it. Off top I cant remember what the name of it is, but I will check for you and get back.
EDIT: I believe this is the app I was thinking of. There may be another different one or two. I know there is one to do exactly what you are asking.. you set a screen area around the bezel to prevent accidental touches. Let me know if this app works for you.
Thanks for the heads up, WiredPirate. That thread also led me to find "Invisible Grip" and as you said, it blocks touches around the edges of the screen, and does work on my device. At some point I'll probably plunk down the $0.99 to get the Pro version, which allows setting the size of each border, etc.
I wonder if a resizing app already exists as well.

I dont know that a resizing app exists, I haven't seen one but that doesn't make it nonexistent. If I do stumble upon one in the future I will let you know. I know there is a resizable app for playing video, but that's much different than shrinking the screen.
Hello,
I have my Wildfire and the problem is, the portion near the status bar isn't working right. Like the 1cm upper portion seems to useless. I would like to change the resolution and the screen size that would allow me to use the handset and allow the touch possible beyond that area.
I will be changing the touch panel sooner but till then i need to use it the way it is.
I have tried changing with DPI but thats of no use.
Can you guide me, which file should i edit to change the display resolution by cutting down the non-working portion.
Thank You.
I don't think you can do that.
You're best current bet is to install CM7, as it allows you to move the status bar to the bottom.
Or use a separate launcher and set the swipe down gesture to open notification drawer. You can then just swipe your finger downwards anywhere on the screen....

This feature is super annoying. Is there any way to disable it? When I try to scroll a webpage by swiping up and down in the bottom right corner of the screen, it zooms instead of scrolls.
I really don't like the look of my phone, don't like the extreme rounded corners of my phone, I can circumvent by using hide camera cutout and it add a black bar at the top getting rid of the prominence of roundness from the top atleast, but now I have rounded corners at the bottom but not at the top of my phone which just looks awkward, so wondering if there is a way to just stop rendering anything at the bottom of the phone like a black bar, where touch is disabled and its just black?

Ofc, follow this:
Settings>Display>Fullscreen Apps>Three dots at the upper right corner>Advanced Settings>Hide Camera Cutout....
Sorry I misunderstood your question. :/
For some reason, my touchscreen doesn't work on the 4 edges of the screen. I searched a lot about it and thought that maybe the problem was related to the Samsung Edge Touch app, but since that app is compatible to 7.0+ and mine is both 6.0 (custom rom, tho) and doesn't have the previously mentioned app installed, i'm probably wrong. I recorded this video to show how it behaves. It's like an invisible border that is messier at the bottom (even more so on the right side) of the screen.
