My friend dropped his SGS3 a while ago and the screen cracked from one of the top corners. Now I know if it's just the glass, the repair cost isn't really high. But how do you know if it's just the outer glass that's cracked or the actual screen as well? If the screen still works (responds to touch) etc, does it mean its just the outer glass?

If everything else works fine (touch, colors, no leak and such) then chances are the it's only the outer glass. Although, opening it would confirm it.

Hello, so here is my problem:
I have cracked my cornin gorilla glass , which i droped from from less then 1meter... such a nonsence since my last phone galaxy s was droped a dozen times and not a single crack, but that is not the point.
So now i have cracked glass, but digitizer touch, and lcd works fine, i have ordered a replacement glass. Only one thing bothers me, now in those places where crack had appeared there are yellow dots , not very bright and in other collors like black red you cant see them, only in white blue and yellow.
I know that these dots came from a presure, so my question is will they disapear if i will remove the cracked screen as it can keep the presure on them, and should i do it urgent or i can wait for my replacement and then remove it ? becouse basicaly i need the phone to use it, but if in case it will damage my phone to the stage when those dots will not disapear i will not risk it.
What suggestion can you tell me ?
Kind regards
You'll be lucky to separate the glass from the LCD, I'm afraid.

Well this did not answear my question
Ok, I'll try again. Removing the cracked glass is likely to destroy your LCD.

well the question was about the yellow dots, how to remove the glass i watched on youtube and it is easy, just need to give some heat to make glue more flexible and it will easily pop off.

You can't replace the front glass alone without destroying the LCD. Yellow spots will be the least of your worries believe me. Do let us know how you get on.

well i will get my glass in 2 weeks, so will write you of my progress later, but i would like to know will those spots dissapear if everything will go well, or should i order a new lcd... the dots are not so big but still.
About a year ago I dropped my Dell streak from around 30cm. Because of the way it landed this cracked the gorilla glass.
So I ordered just the glass part, as like yourself the rest worked fine.
I stripped it down and took the screen out then set about separating the glass from the screen. I also did as you have and watched various YouTube vids to assist this.
Let me tell you, from my experience it was 2 hours down the pan. I did get the glass off, after much pulling, tugging, wiggling, heating and cooling. Only to find in the process that the actual screen underneath had ended up only fit for the bin. So I had to order the full assembly instead, this was fitted no problem.
Just my opinion though, if you want to tackle it go ahead, its your phone.
As for the yellow dots, can't help you on that I'm afraid.

Mistakes were made, pockets had holes in them, phones were dropped. Now that I've gotten over the original shock of dropping my glide, I'm reviewing my options. I think i want to just replace the glass myself, but i can't find the part. I've seen a few places selling the whole screen assembly, but from what i can tell, my actual screen under the glass is fine. Does anyone know if i can get -just- the glass? or is the screen and the glass glued together or something?
edit: oh god, a thousand apologies. really didn't mean to post this in this section, could a mod please move? i cant seem to find the delete button.
According to this video

I dont think the glass can be changed without the screen.
This does not belong in the Development Section and I am wondering why no one hit the report button....

Hey guys, just got my S3 exactly 2 weeks ago. Already have very small surface scratches along the bottom, and a very shallow scratch going up diagonally from the bottom right up to about 3/4s to the top left. To be honest, Corning Gorilla Glass isn't very gorilla-ee. Now, before you go thinking i'm reckless, I don't remember dropping it at all. I watched a torture test on YouTube and TBH I think it got hit with some sand. My question is is it worth replacing the screen? I can post pictures if needed. New glass is only 20 greens on amazon so it wouldn't to pricey to replace it, but honestly I don't have the patience to do it myself. Are there any mail-in services that you guys recommend? Call me anal but after having this phone for only a week i'm kind of pissed it's already scratched, and I don't want to live with it for 2 years in the condition it's in. One more thing, do you think if I put a matte screen protector that it would cover up the scratches?
Thanks for taking the time to read my lengthy post
I had the same issue with small scratches appearing on the screen and I put on a screen protector and they pretty much vanished. I think that would be the way to go before replacing the whole screen. I would NOT recommend replacing the screen because of some minor scratches. People have had success replacing just the glass, but there is always a risk of damaging the digitizer, which makes a $20 repair a $200 repair.

Here are some pictures, like I said, i'm super anal about this kind of stuff, I just got the thing like 2 weeks ago, and I know it's not worth it. Maybe you could take a look.
Thanks
EDIT: The picture is blurry AF but you can kind of see it near the menu button.
I recently bought a Sprint Galaxy S3 for parts. I replaced my Att Galaxy s3's camera and protective lense after they cracked using the sprint GS3 camera and lense. Everything works fine on it.
My question is:
Would it be possible to take the glass screen off of the Sprint GS3 and use it to replace my Att Galaxy S3? (it is spider webbed on the top half corner).
Thanks :cyclops:
Is better to get a new digitizer glass. I don't think you can remove the glass without damaging it.

Yes, if you take the whole AMOLED digitizer and replace it without messing up
There are also a few ''How to'' videos on YouTube that was a big help for me.

Possible? Yes. Easy? No.
Samsung adheres the glass screen to the AMOLED display. Without proper tools you can very well risk not only damaging the digitizer, but also cracking the very glass you wish to remove from the sprint phone and give to your other phone.
If you absolutely insist and don't mind a possible 200.00 mistake, you'll need a heat gun (a blow dryer may work, as some users have reported, but I didn't have much luck with my wife's. I purchased one from my local home improvement store for 25.00), a very thin knife (like a razor blade), a guitar pick and 3M Adhesive Tape.
There is a video on how to do it in the General section of the ATT S3 XDA Forums.
Good luck to you!

Hey All.
Been using nexus 7 2013 since last 2 years. My nephew dropped it and the screen cracked from the side. The device is working fine. The touch doesn't work at the the area of the cracks on the top right, and a few other places. But works everywhere else on the screen. My question is what has to be replaced, the digitizer or the entire LCD. My personal diagnoses is only the upper glass needs to be replaced. Please advice further!
Digitizer is for $15 and the whole thing is for $50. What has to be replaced and how to find out?
Please see the pictures and help me please
Unless you have a way of separating the glass/digitizer from the actual lcd you need the whole assembly. It's all glued together you can't just lift off the glass.

You'd be much better off replacing the whole assembly. Separating the digitizer from the lcd can be done, but the problem is with locating a digitizer that works. I've tried this for about 5 times, and each time I had to return the digitizer to the vendor.
Also, since the bezel (frame) is designed so the digitizer back always touches the lcd surface (they are glued together on the original assembly), you'll have those strange "rainbow" spots on them when the device is turned off.
Not to mention that if you use an adhesive that's too thin, there's a chance the digitizer might be bent, not enough to crack it, but enough to distort touch sensitivity, resulting in some spots being unresponsive. In short, too much of a hassle for a 30-buck saving.
