[Q] use SD for OS usage - HTC Wildfire S

If it is possible to use SD-card for storing some of the system folders on wildfire S ?
I`m using Link2SD - it is awesome! But after installing apps even after moving/linking them to SD looks like there is still something stayed on the internal memory. Finally after installing some amount of apps - you do not have any more free space on internal.
One more similar question - how to change "downloads" directory to some folder on SD? If you have still some free space on Internal (for example 20mb) and you want to update some application which need 21mb (and it is already installed) - you will not be able to do it, because there is no enough space on internal. So you must delete your app, download the updated installation file and install it. Is it possible to download apps directly to the SD ?

about second thing download app i dont know about it..but it can solve by clearing cache(delete downloaded app )
and yeah there is one script which can provide you space upto 1 GB and its fast, stable.use int2ext from cronmod.(your rom should have init.d support)

I`m currently using Link2SD.
here is a line from int2ext thread:
Install
....
-Select "format /sd-ext"
if this will clear data from my existing sd-ext partition?
P.S.
I know about cache-clearing, but this also is a limited-time solution. int2ext looks much better...

int2ext will only work if you flash it right after flashing rom..it's not like you can flash that script anytime.
but you can use titanium backup and backup all your data then flash your rom again and then flash int2ext and format /sd-ext and reboot.
you will have now 1 GB space.(As per your sd-ext partition)
and yeah rom should have init.d support.

Thanks a lot. It is working now and it is exactly what i need. Thanks one more time!

I get some problems now. I have a lot of free space on system (>200mb), but when GooglePlay is trying to update apps - "Low disk space" message appear. Looks like some folder which is used for temporary gplay downloads is still on phones memory.
How to fix this?

anybody can help?

Best flow for rooting to improve available app storage

Hi all,
I've done some reading on rooting and whatever else is needed to improve the measly amount of app storage on an otherwise cool WFS. However, being a noob at this I'm not sure if I got it all right. Here's what I think that I need to do:
0. start with "clean" WFS (factory data reset)
1. backup everything with nandroid
2. unlock bootloader (at htcdev.com)
3. install superuser from market
4. create ext2 partition on SD card
5. install link2sd and point to ext2 partition on SD card
6. uninstall preinstalled bloatware
Does this look right? Should this give me a good amount of app storage? Anything that needs to be added/improved?
One thing that I'm not sure about is if I also need to install data2SD.
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Good amount of app storage depends on how much u need and whats size of ur ext partition. Best way to increase app storage is flashing Data2sdV2withA2sdremover_by_jikantaru.zip after making ext partition. Google it ,download and flash.

Once I have an app on the SD card wouldn't internal app memory not be an issue anymore?
I use a 32GB SD card and was thinking of setting a 2-3GB app partition.

I'm not sure that I know how to handle these ROMs.
Nick
Your original "flow" is sufficient.
Don't worry about Data2SD. That is unnecessary (and may cause problems) if you plan to use Link2SD.
Link2SD is the superior solution, in my humble opinion.
Yes, I'm quite OK with the stock ROM. I just need more app space.
Should I do step 6 right after rooting instead?
Will Link2SD ensure that all app apk/dalvik/cache etc goes to SD thus keeping the available internal storage constant?
Thanks,
Nick

0. not absolutely necessary
1. you can't do a nandroid backup until you have unlocked your bootloader and have clockworkmod recovery installed.
2. if you have received an OTA update to 2.26.401.3 and hboot 1.09.0099, you can unlock, install custom recovery and root using rezo609's all in one utility without any data loss. keep your warranty and no need to go through htcdev.
3. no need if you follow above
4. backup your sd card to computer 1st
6. uninstalling preinstalled bloatware won't increase your total internal memory (data partition) as these apps are installed on the system partition.

should do depending on your selected options. however app data should stay on internal (generally better for stability and performance anyway) so internal memory will still decrease, but much slower.
whatever your setup, i recommend installing 'diskusage' to see how all your partitions are being used.

How can further increase internal memory?
One reason for wanting to remove the preinstalled apps is that whenever I need to update them it seems that the update must go in the internal memory. I was hoping that if I uninstall them then I can reinstall just the ones I want but on on the SD card. Does that make sense?
Thanks,
Nick

the ext partition becomes extra internal memory, but is not 'seen' by the android system i.e. looks like it remains at ~150MB.
i've not actually used link2sd, but when you install an app, you can choose to install/move it to the ext partition. this will move more than the traditional apps2sd (without root), thus you'll be able to install more apps...
if you update a system app, link2sd can even integrate it back into system partition
also, i don't recommend creating a partition bigger than 2GB, not necessary and i think can cause problems.
You can try this one also myandroiid.blogspot.com/p/how-to-use-your-sdcard-as-internal.html

Link2SD - Internal Memory still full

Hey guys,
I'm using Android 2.3.5 with Sense 2.1 (stock rom) and added Link2SD to my rooted phone some time ago. At first I was glad I had about 50mb of internal storage left after I moved all (!!!) linked every app to my SD-card. I don't know how, but the internal storage shrinked more and more and now I'm left with 10mb of free storage and that annoying message, that I'm running out of memory. I tried some cache cleaning apps but I just don't know what's eating up all of my memory!
Any ideas?
greetings
Link2sd leaves stuff in internal memory. My little wfs became a wonderful phone after I s-offed and rooted it, but then installed some custom roms, and some of which had A2SD built in. I installed all my apps and still had 75mb of free memory.
I am currently running CM9, and I used a custom script to move my apps and cache to my SD card. I have 123 MB of memory now. It's terrible

After failing to get simple2ext to work, and having Link2SD eat my SD card mutliple times, I was just about ready to give up on CM9 when I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668247
Since then, my CM9 Alpha 7 install ahs been working very well. I could not be more pleased.
BTW: If you do run those scripts on an existing ROM (without Link2SD, Data2SD, or simple2ext, just do steps 1 and 2)

I don't know much about Link2SD, as i could never get it to work, but... I'm thinking if you move everything back to internal memory, and uninstall the startup scripts that mount the SD card, you should be able to run the scripts I used. I would make a full backup of my ROM before trying anything like that though. Ya never know...
You can try the following.
1. Go to link2sd. Clear cache, relink lib files and multi select anf link all.
2. Get titanium backup and integrate davlik cache into rom.
3. Enable auto link in link2sd.
4. Reboot.
Im using link2sd wid a lot of apps and have internal storage 60+ mb all the time.
Also uninstall any crap system apps you dont use because they'll just fill the internal memory.

Hi buddy...I had installed CM10 on my HTC wildfire & used Link2SD which was working good for the internal memory and applications part but had its own loops of data connection getting lost in between and wake up problem. This was irritating so i switched back to my Stock rom by CWM using Backup & restore. Now im glad to be back on my stock rom without all other problems but the problems of LOW INTERNAL MEMORY.
Is there really any way that i can properly install Link2Sd and make space free and have hell lot of apps just as i had when i was on CM10 ???
Please guide....i love having all my applications back...but on stock rom itself....please help.....

First flash eoghan's kernel on stock ROM which enables using of different scripts and link2SD..then partition SD card and flash the script or use link2SD as always..
And make sure you have a backup..
P S Instead of flashing the above you can also install crossfire's stock ROM or other stock based ROMs which have init.d support I.E you can partition SD card and install scripts and other stuff... Your options are Kimsmod ultimate, Wildchild or crossfire's stock ROM.

You terrible WRONG!!! Link2SD do the job correctly, learn it! and Internal Storage remains unused-free! When link an app, in Storage Info looks Internal Storage raised but when you make Quick Reboot Internal Stoage seems like a nothing get in there! |So! I search for days to finaly suffix the best to free Internal Storage without any mod file|
I make Factory data reset and device come back with ~30mb Internal Storage, i partition sd card and install Link2SD, mount 2nd partition. Install any app, Create link Quick Reboot and go on!!
Best Regards

There is something better than Link2sd
Something better is called [INT2EXT] and it has requirements:
1.Init.d Supported in ROM
2.SD Card Partition
how to install:
1.Wipe everything and
2. Re-partition SD Card
3. Re-flash ROM
4. Install the zip using CWM

[Qext4 partition problem

hi everyone,
i just rooted and installed the Cyanogen 7.2.0.1-bravo rom and partitionned my sdcard 16gb to a FAT32 partion and ext4 partition with 1gb.
the problem is the intern memory !! ( lack of space ), idk if i missed something or didn't installed a script ... i have app2sd already installed and i moved the most of the apps to my sdcard but the ext4 partion is not used and can't see it .
so what do i have to do ?
ps: i just istalled a2sdFroyo, but doesn't help or i didn't used it right ...
pls help
when you say "i have app2sd already installed" how have you done it?
how did you partition your sd card, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery only. if you used something else, backup your sd and repartition.
to maximise space, s-off and change hboot to cm7r2, recommend guides here (read them slowly and several times to help your understanding)
then full wipe, install rom.zip again from scratch
to enable the A2SD, one method is to install an app like S2E which can move apps automatically to sd-ext, no need to 'move to sd'. you can keep dalvik cache on internal, and move it to sd-ext if you still run out of space. internal memory will always go down as stuff builds up on internal (data partition)
whatever rom you use, install an app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions in future, that way you can actually see where and how your space is being used
i followed the MiniTool Partition tuto to make partitions and then i installed normaly app2sd
why do i have to reistall the rom again ?

do not use minitool, this may be the reason why you cannot use the partition at all.
backup your sd card to pc first, then use gparted, there's a video guide from the link i posted
(make sure you have a nandroid backup, titanium backup of apps and backup contacts to google)
i am advising a full wipe because i don't know how you "installed normally app2sd". if you reinstall the rom from scratch without anything else, there is less chance of things going wrong. using S2E afterwards is easy.
if you want to set up this rom or any rom properly so you don't run out of space, you should understand where all your apks, data and dalvik are stored, and what the different hboot partition tables are. it's all in the guides i linked.
i installed app2sd after i finished with the rom and the partitioning of the sdcard, and it works without any problem
i istalled now S2E and i transfered the apps to the ext folder now i have 140Mb free space and i think it's working now becuase i sync with skype and facebook and i still have the same space in my internal memory ...
what do you think ?

i would still recommend s-off and change hboot to cm7r2. this will use space more efficiently, and you can install many more apps. just read the guides i linked. you can still learn a lot more

write down your free sd-ext space then install an app from the play store. Check the space again. If it had gone down your sorted.

looks like it is working
with diskusage you can just zoom in on all your partitions including sd-ext, so if you see your app apk's there the script is working.
open diskusage again and select /system. i'm willing to bet that you're still on stock hboot. you will see a lot of free space on system partition, which is useless...
therefore still recommend (for the last time) to s-off and change to cm7r2 hboot. you seem to keep ignoring this and the guides...

[Q] plants vs zombies2 install problem

I wanted to install p. vs z 2 but it has 168 MB. And our Desire 151MB system partitionn :crying:
Of cause i have an ext partition. There are 754 free Mb of 1,41 GB. (quick system info)
But my intern memory just have 33,44MB of 151 free.
So on the ext i could install it 4 times but the store first download to intern. Is there a way to install? Maybe if someone uploads the apk and i flash it in the recovery directly to ext4?
An other question. When i startet my phone there where just 5,6MB free. When moves the a2sd script things to the partition and when moves it it back?

Your /data partition is 151MB, not your /system partition. Your /system partition is 250MB as you are on stock hboot.

When installing apps, as far as I know it doesn't actually install it to internal (/data), and then move it to ext4. It should install it directly to ext4.
However, depending on the ROM, it needs to see the available space on the internal. The apk is then tricked to your ext4 partition.
One way to install it which might work (not tried it)
- Find and download the apk
- Copy and paste it to your /sd-ext partition using a file browser
- Change file permissions to match your other apps
- Reboot

What ROM are you using, and are you using the built in A2SD script or something else? Any A2SD script should move apps (and maybe dalvik cache) automatically to your ext4 partition. I does not move it to internal and back to ext4.
It looks like your memory usage is not very efficient. You may benefit from changing hboot if your ROM /system size is a lot smaller than 250MB. Your dalvik cache might also be on internal, when you could move it to sd-ext where there is plenty of free space.

It depends a bit on how your script works. Reading the ROM OP it has some sort of "a2sdx" built it, I'm not familiar with exactly how it works. You need to understand this script first before wondering about anything internal memory related.
Think about it logically though...the script is meant to move things to the ext. That's its purpose. Generally they move at least the whole app apk to ext.
So
- If you have an app installed, it should already be on the ext.
- When you update the app, it will overwrite the existing apk on ext.
- There are other things along with an app such as app libs, app data and dalvik cache, which may be on internal or ext depending on the script. These can change on app updates as well.
Have a look at an app like 'DiskUsage', use it to browse your /data partition. See what's using the space. Often you may have some stray /system apps on /data, and you need to move them back to /system.

I've heard of the link2sd partitioning method but whenever i try i get the error "Mount script cannot be created" and i've tried all the options e.g ex2,3,4 and FAT32. I've gave up on that so now i'm wondering is there any way to get my internal memory go up since apps take up more and more space.
Do you have enough space on sd card? in my case, link2sd made ext2 partition with 1.4GB size on 16GB card (it didn't even ask me how much space it needed). Since i click it just for curiousity, i had to format that sd card in windows to get that space back. I don't need it because link2sd can move apps to sd even without that partition. Just don't move apps like widgets or launcher, all other is safe to move...
Or if you are using GB stock based rom (and you have unlocked bootloader) you can use kernel with 700MB data partition

I have 6GB space left (i think that's enough) and i only tried to make a 1GB partition. Although you can move apps to the sd, not all of the app goes to the sd, a part of it still remains in the internal storage By partitioning, you can xfer all of the apps data (aka link) to the partitioned part of the sd card. Have an unlocked bootloader, currently using xperia Z final rom by markpython (ICS)

Well, you can try to repartition sdcard manualy with minitool partition wizard

I tried but even then those partitioned space become a waste of space since i can't move any apps into the partitioned area

What kernel are you using? Is others init.d scripts are working for you?

You might want to try Lupus ICS/GB v7 kernel
It has 610MB data partition (and ICSbeta have 380MB, as i recall)
But make sure you read all the info in 2nd post (esspecially under bold "important" lines)
In short, make cwm backup and/or app(and data) backup (with titanium backup)
Also, you might want to check this thread if you want to test other kernels
Just found out ur the owner of the other thread anyways what difference will it make using the other kernel? Will it fix the error "Mount script cannot be created"

As i said, i'm on GB and script worked for me. I don't know why you are getting that error. Maybe it's ROM, maybe it's kernel related, but i'm only guessing...
I just remembered something:
try to update your busybox (to fix script error)
you can do it with app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer
ok thanks ill give that a try
Just bricked my xperia play :c
I'm stuck on the LuPuS kernel bootloop
EDIT: ok i fixed that now and thanks the partitioning problem has been fixed. But i picked up a new issue. O the walkman music player app when i try to download music info it gives me the "unknown error could not download"
