[Request] Steps to put AOSP dialer in a TW rom - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

AOSP is still too buggy for me on our device but I despise the Samsung dialer and contacts and was wondering if anyone can help provide the steps to get the AOSP dialer onto a TouchWiz rom like in this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170142
Do you just need to push an app to system/apps or is it more complicated?
Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing but I also wanted to add the email program too.

For email, copy the exchage.apk and email.apk from aosp and paste to system/app. You will have to remove samsung email and exchange to make it work. I use aosp email and mms on touchwiz roms.

I tried that rom, but it's a little buggy for me. I would like to get the aosp dialer and contacts into another rom but can't figure it out.
I used 7zip to open up the NoWizAOSP rom, and dug into "system\app\" but I see no phone.
I see:
phoneerrservice.apk
phoneinfo.apk
phonesky.apk
secphone.apk
I do see contacts.apk - so I'm guessing that's the one I want for the contacts.... help!!

Phone is Contacts.apk the actual dialer is in phone.apk
---------- Post added at 02:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:33 PM ----------
You will probably want contactsprovider.apk or whatever it is as well.

All the sec.....apk crap (anything that has to do with contacts or phone and if there is already a contactprovider.apk of some sort.)

Ok, so after playing around for a bit here's what worked for me (I only did the contacts since I wanted the "Send to Voicemail" option that AOSP offers).
I take no responsibility for your fat fingers or my mental illnesses which may have made me miss a few steps
DO NOT FLASH the zip in recovery!!!! You must extract the files!!!
must be rooted
These instructions are specifically for Macksrom, but I imagine with a little research one could get this to work on other ROMs..
back up your stuff - nandroid
using a root explorer (I use ES file explorer) navigate to /system/app/
rename: (done by long pressing on the file and scrolling down to rename)
contacts.apk -> contacts.apk.old
contactsprovider.apk -> contactsprovider.apk.old
seccontactsprovider.apk -> seccontactsprovider.apk.old
(this is a fail safe - if you have to, just rename the .apk.old back to .apk)
extract the zip file I attached (for some reason there's t- take the three files and push them to /system/app/
after they are in that directory, then for each file you must change permissions (long press file, scroll down to properties - click change)
rw
r
r
reboot - profit
you may have to bring from your app drawer the contacts (which is called "People") to your dock or wherever you want it to be.

These directions are incomplete or innacurate because the 3 files you say to remain don't all exist in stock touch wiz... I gave it a shot anyways and ended up with no cellular service. Restoring to backup.

I apologize - I failed to state that I was running Macksrom. I edited my post for other people, but I'm glad u made a backup.
What files do u have in system/app/ that relate in any form to "contacts"?

Install the AOSP touch wiz Rom. Problem solved.

The people who worked on the The NoTouchWizAOSPMOD already did all the work and they put all of AOSP stock apps into the Rom. You could PM the guy in the OP and of that Rom thread and maybe he will tell you how he did it. I personally think it is a waste of time and it would be faster if you just flashed his Rom.
At least I gave an answer all you did was troll my response.

rather dated thread but I figured I'd chime in.
I do realize this is for the note 2, but I have an epic 4g touch, so I doubt this would work on mine, but I'm curious, I've been looking for a way to get the aosp dialer & contacts on my epic 4g touch, and I have looked for this NoTouchWizAOSPMOD your referring to and can't seem to find anything, would it be possible to provide a link?
Also for my phone I have no contacts.apk or contactsprovider.apk, mine are SecContactsProvider.apk, SecContacts.apk that's the only 2 I see.
Not sure if this would be beneficial for anyone or not I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Livewallpaper on Bonsai

Hi All,
I was wondering if I could put out a request for some APKs. I would like to have live wallpapers on Bonsai and have tried putting livewallpaper.apk and the picker into my Epic but I don't have Root Explorer and I can't seem to change the permissions on those files. Right now all of the APKs I found have Read Yes Write Yes and the other one No. All of the APKs in my app directory have Read Yes Write No and other one No. Could someone post those APKs with permissions set like that? I don't know if that is my exact problem or if it is worth it to buy RE for only that purpose.
TIA,
DD
I believe its been mentioned before that ES File Explorer brings most of the Root Explorer functionality for free. I could be wrong though since ive never tried it myself. Worth a shot though if its just a permissions issue.

U can also use sdx stock app removal app, just put the apk in the adx folder on the SD card and go Into the app then to manage backups and got restore
Set From My 3.0.1 Bonsai Epic 4g
Thanks. I have tried everything. I could not change the permissions using sdx or ES File manager. All I could do with those programs was access the system directories. Unless I am doing something wrong, I will either need to get Root Explorer and change the permissions or get altered livewallpaper apks.
I think the frankenstine rom thread has a flashable zip for live wallpapers

OK. I think I may be confusing some people.
I would like to have Live Wallpapers in Bonsai since it's been removed. I did some research and found that you need to install the livewallpaper apks into the system/app directory. I did that using ES File Manager and rebooted. It didn't work. I did some more research and a few people had the same issue. The solution was to make sure the permissions in the livewallpaper apks was exactly the same as the permissions as the other apks in the apps directory. The apks in the directory all have Read Yes, Write No and Hidden No. All of the livewallpaper apks I found had permissions set up as Read Yes, Write Yes and Hidden No. I figure if I change the Write from Yes to No, it might work. I'm not 100% positive which is why I don't know if it's worth it to buy Root Explorer just to experiment. I'm hoping someone can provide me with the livewallpaper and livewallpaperspicker apks with altered permissions that have those settings.
Estewa_619, I will try that ROM. Thanks!
Tried the Frankenstein ROM livewallpaper apks and it still didn't work. The permissions are still set up as Read Yes, Write Yes and Hidden No.

This is very easy to solve. Go to midnight rom and download it to computer. Open up the midnight extras folder and you will find lots of zip files in there that are all flashable in CWM. Just extract the folder, then copy the live wallpaper zips you want onto your sd card, then flash in CWM.
Alternatively, what I normally do is download the rom you want to flash (Bonsai). Open it up on your pc. Navigate to system/apps. Paste the livewallper apks into that directory. Then flash normally. This will include any files you want in the system/app folder.

7zip (windows) is what u want to use 2 open the zip but DO NOT EXTRACT it!!! Well in 7zip paste the apks u want into system/apps. Then close 7zip. Move the rom 2 ur sdcard and flash as u would normaly. U can also replace the boot/shutdown animation and a few other parts of the rom that you can add or subtract stuff from. I hope this help as not to sound offensive but u seem a bit newbish and 7zip isa great tool for viewing zip files w/o extracting them took me a good deal of time 2 find this handy tool, hope this helps ya out...

Code:
adb push LiveWallpapersPicker.apk /sdcard/
adb shell
Code:
su
remount rw
cat /sdcard/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk > /system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
exit
exit
I went into the dos shell and sure enough it worked!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Here are the .zips from the midNIGHT ROM extras folder... Flash one of these, should work.
But the adb method works just as well... Maybe even faster.

[MOD] Windows Phone 7 Tick Sound AT&T / T-Mo

I customized the UI sounds for the SGS3: Tick Effect & Keyboard sounds with that of WP7 tick sound and customized the camera / video button sound, etc.
Make sure you rename your stock UI sounds (Example: *tick_effect) before you over-right them.
Upzip / copy and paste in: System>Media>Audio>ui
Download:

Enjoy!
Oh man thank God I hate the drip sounds they put on this phone! Thank you!

What seems to be the prob? Just download the zip to your sdcard, unzip it, open root explorer, copy and paste the apk's you want to install and copy and paste them in: Root/System/app
Should be it. *might have to install it and or change permissions*
Awesome! I had to turn off the touch clicks and, since I hate haptic feedback, it's nice to be able to regain some response in the phone's UI.
Thanks.
If you want to further customize your UI to resemble WP7 here is the font.
Should be able to just install the apk and go to settings display and set font.http://db.tt/Wmgm3nST

when i try to rename the stock ui sounds so i can ad the new ones root explore says something about bricking my device lol can anyone give me the steps to do this correctly
Use root explorer, make the directory r/w, copy the sounds into system / media / audio / ui folder.... You will (or should be if you are doing it right) be overwriting pre existing files. Once done and you have overwritten the sounds you wanted to change, reboot phone.
You may need to rename the file if you want it represent/be used for another function. For example, inside the zip file there is a file names backspace.ogg..... Say you want to use it for the TW_touch.ogg sound.... You will need to rename it and all that. Only problem is by the time you cuztomize things to the way you like, a new updated rom is put out and you have to do it again!

It's just warning you because you are editing system settings. Renaming anything in the specified folder won't cause any damage.

Use Root Explorer, other file managers won't have permission to change system files. With Root Explorer you will also need to select Mount R/W to be able to write to the system folder.
Make sure you rename all the original files if you ever want to use the original sounds again...I just went back to AOSP lock/unlock sounds, the WP7 sound was a bit sharp.
all worked as soon as i got root explorer thanks guys, am dissapointed though as i am looking to get away from the drip and water sounds, i guess i want a more iphone like sound for typing and lock and unlock without having the iphone....any ideas

I assure you, you wont brick your device from just renaming a sound file. I do it all the time. Maybe its for when you try and rename a needed framework or system file.

[MOD]PopupBrowser

Howdy folks -
I started with the modified-to-be-expandable PopupBrowser.apk found here and added/modded it a bit further. I reset a number of the layout dimension xml stuffs back to stock UVALL4/UVALK8 values, edited some smali stuff so the expanding states "fit" a little better (so minimized doesn't cut off the title bar, mid-size state is about the same as the size when you first open the popup browser, and large-size state fills up a bit more of the screen), and set it up so that when wanting to "popout" the content in the popup browser into a "full" browser it will look for Chrome first - if Chrome isn't installed, it'll point to the stock (given similarity of package names this should be either stock TW or AOSP) browser. FWIW I originally put this together for inclusion in a rom I put together... just putting that out there
Anyhoo - here it is
md5: DBAB8033D6041B39D664F0A1F175DB02
Let me know if there are any problems
NOTE: If odexed the zip should move /system/app/PopupBrowser.odex to /system/app/PopupBrowser.odex.bak
This looks great! Can't wait to give it a try!
I keep getting application not installed. I used to have an error saying a file name as such already exists.
After deleting popupbrowser using tbup, it now gives me application not installed.
Any suggestions or easy guides?

I'm confused - when does it say application not installed? What are the errors exactly (the wording I mean)? After you deleted PopupBrowser.apk from /system/app did you reflash the zip from the OP? A possible issue could have been the popup browser already installed was slightly different in its name (if this was true it was likely a case issue) - what are you running? I can edit the updater-script to remove other similar-but-different-casing apks if this is what was going on.

I dl'ed the app straight from chrome browser on my phone. I opened it up using ES Zip viewer and it gives me two folders - Meta inf and system.
I open system folder and find popupbroswer.apk and click on it which brings me to the install page, once I click install it tells me "Application not installed"
Am I supposed to do anything else with the stuff that is in meta inf? I'd consider myself amateur with this stuff so bear with me, sorry!
Not sure what "casing" is but I'm stock rooted using Exynos Abuse on UVALK8. Hope that helps

Ah - I see. The zip is in a format so you can flash it in a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc.). The apk itself cannot be installed via the package manager route (which is why you were having the problem), if you aren't going to use a recovery then you need to push/copy the apk itself into /system/app. Basically you need to set /system/app/ as rw so you can copy stuff into it, copy the apk into it, and (for good measure) set the permissions on PopupBrowser.apk to rw-r--r-- (or 644 if you use a terminal or something similar). Then you should be good to go. It's totally up to you on how you want to go about it. Lemme know (whether in this thread or via PM) if you have any questions.
I don't think this interested many, but I updated the OP - it should work for odexed folks now as well

I just found it and spent a while looking at pop-up browser options. It's awesome man...smaller title bar, shrinkable to view more of the background app.
I did have issues resizing it (bottom right corner of the pop-up window). It doesn't seem to allow me to resize. I can press the "expand" button or whatever it is in the title bar which will enlarge the window but only vertically.
I have the DPI of my phone set to 220 so maybe that's it?

Resizing in that sense is not supported unfortunately - it's just the ability for 3 stages of "height" more or less.

[Q] SOLVED looking for GS3 Default Notifacation/Rintones zip

im on CM !0.1 and my wife is on the same rom and she wants her Stock sounds back so i am trying to find a .zip or somewhere that has the Default Stock sounds that i can get .
i tried Google but it only brings up ringtones not Stock
thanks
Re: [Q] looking for GS3 Default Notifacation/Rintones zip
Its not necessary to find a zip for it, you can do it yourself very easily
Download one of the stock roms (I suggest freezas rom) and extract it
Copy the "/system/media/notifications" and "/system/media/ringtones" folders (from the extracted rom) to a temp folder on your wife's phone's sdcard
Unmount the sdcard
Now on the phone, navigate to the sdcard with some sort of file manager (that supports root privileges) and copy the "notifications" and "ringtones" folders to /system/media
If prompted for superuser perms, allow it and then select "merge folders" or something along those lines when prompted
Now reboot and those sounds should be available. Any questions, just ask :good:

Re: [Q] looking for GS3 Default Notifacation/Rintones zip
Not /system/media, only /system/media/ringtones and /system/media/notifications
Copying the entire /system/media folder would cause a lot of issues, especially since the OP is talking about AOSP.
Re: [Q] looking for GS3 Default Notifacation/Rintones zip

Don't know what ROM you are on... your knowledge of pushing apps to /system (ie., via adb), etc., so I'm attaching the stock samsung keyboard (plain grey) with auto-correct functionality. You need to be rooted at least. Copy the attached apk to your phone... then, using your favorite root file manager (like Root Explorer, etc) copy to /system folder first... fix permissions to rw.r..r.. then, MOVE to /system/app. It will ask if you want to replace the current "SamsungIME.apk", answer yes. You should be good to go.

Those are folders/files in the flashable zip. Let's try the simpliest approach first.
1. Download "Root Explorer (File Manager) from the PlayStore, and install
2. From my post #6 above, save the attached file (SamsungIME.apk)... on your phone's sdcard
3. Open Root Explorer, and navigate to the folder on your phone (sdcard) where you put the SamsungIME.apk... long press it, then select "Copy"
4. now while still within Root Explorer, navigate to /system folder, and hit "Paste" (make sure you mount as R/W.. it's the button at the top. If you are mounted as Read Only, you'll get an error message "You cannot past here because the file system is read only". Just hit the "Mount R/W" toggle at the top of screen.
5. Now, "SamsungIME.apk" is in your /system folder. You need to fix permissions. Long press "SamsungIME.apk" and select "Permissions". There are boxes with green check marks. toggle the boxes so that you only have green check marks in: Owner: R W ; Group: R ; Others: R. Hit "OK"
6. Now, long press "SamsungIME.apk" file again, and select "Move"
7. Navigate to /system/app (you should already be in /system, so just tap the "app" folder
8. Make sure you are still mounted as "R/W", if so, tap the "Paste" key at bottom. this will put "SamsungIME.apk" in the /system/app folder
9. if you did all this correctly, you should be good to go...
Okay I tried finall got it in the right system folder like u explained I attach a picture. Its still not working. Do I just need to reboot or flash? I use goo manager.

It appears you are not understanding some of the android basics...and that can be extremely dangerous... especially since you are rooted. From you screenshot, you show zip files in your /system folder. Per my previous post, I stated to copy "SamsungIME.apk" to /system... fix permissions... then MOVE to /system/app. Your screenshot shows zip files in your /system folder (i.e., "SamsungIME.zip"). My attachment is the apk file itself. So apparently when you downloaded, it zipped it for compression purposes. YOU NEED THE APK. I suspect it is inside that zip file.. so you'll need to know how to unzip that zip.. and get the ".apk" The APKs goes into the /system/app folder (Not /system). Try again, and get the SamsungIME.apk out of that zip... copy that apk to /system.. fix permissions... then move (not copy) to /system/app (it's a sub folder within /system). If this didn't work, you have done something wrong.
Damn I had the feeling some was wrong. So should I get that out of the system folder? How do I do that ? I cant delete or move them. Does it harm if I leave them there? Ya im trying that now how yiu explained the apk I get it . Thanks alot tho for ur patients

I use Root Explorer... if you long press the file, you get the option to delete file. Delete the ".zip" files in /system folder. Your screenshot looks like ES File Explorer (or something similar). You should be able to "select" that zip file, then delete. Go back to my Post#6 and download the APK file (SamsumgIME.apk)... do not zip it... you should be able to download file as apk. Then follow my previous instructions. Again, get the APK file (not .zip) to /system folder.... then fix permissions... then MOVE (don't copy or you will leave a copy of the apk behind in /system) to /system/app folder. System apk files belong in the app subfolder of system (/system/app). When you go to paste the apk in /system/app, you will be asked to replace existing file... replace it. Try again... report back.
Ok thanks will do that tomorow . I use es explorer yes. When I try to delete it says file cannot be deleted. Cant see any apk file I use windows 8 maybe tahts why?
