Ok, i've got no ota update so i downloaded and put zip file on root sd card directory..
now, what should i do?
i don't know
thanks
It should update itself, when you check for updates, just go to settings, about, software update and do that from there, is should bring up a window saying that an update is ready ti be installed.

You should put the ota file in folder name Download, create it if does not exists. make sure OTA file you downloaded is for your phones CID.
I think you guys have no clue ! And if you are on stock rom and the ota didn't hit you.....its not out for you. Learn what you are doing ! You can't "just" go flash around like that !!!
Are you on stock rom ?
Are you on stock recovery ?
Are you on stock kernel ?

I would like to know this as well - please, does anyone have the answer?
It shouldn't install automatically OTA with Clockwork. You would have to download the zip file containing the update, place it on your SD card, then tell Clockwork to install zip from SD card. As for the recovery image alone, I don't know. I haven't seen one (but then again, I haven't looked). I know there is a complete stock image, but that restores everything to stock and I'm pretty sure you don't want that.

I was wondering if there was a copy of the stock 2.2 recovery around in the form of a PB31IMG.ZIP?
I would like to keep a copy incase I need to flash it back for future updates after froyo. Right now I have Clockworkmod, but if Verizon/HTC put out a quick OTA fix it wont install with clockwork right?
I also have S-Off / unrevoked forever
Thanks!

Thank you! Your help is very appreciated
I would like to restore my stock recovery on 1.56.720.6, im unable to find this one on xda, My other option is to extract it from the OTA but there is no link anywhere to download that, can someone help me with this?
EDITL downloaded from htcdev site its a 100mb file do I flash the whole thing using super tool? if so which option should I pick to flash or goto CWM and flash from zip?
does my bootloader need to be locked before I do this?
anyone?
Is that download actually firmware or the OTA update?... I think it's only source code? Did you download it and check in the .zip file what the actual contents are before you just go and flash random .zip files with your version number on it?
As for stock recovery, correct, I can't find that stock recovery either. Just like with the OTA update most guys that get it don't bother making backup and sharing before doing anything.

They don't specify on the HTC site but when I unzip it there is a .tar file inside it, so I assume its either the ota or kernel source which someone more experienced than me can tell me.
Here's the link its filed as a zip under HTC one m8 devices

So, I got notification saying the new update is ready, I downloaded it clicked OK, rebooted the phone and said entering the recovery but it went directly to TWRP recovery ( previously I have unlocked bootloader and rooted my system and installed custom recovery)
So my question is how do I install this latest update ?

Not wanting to hijack the OP, but I'm trying to install update version 3.28.401.6 on an unlocked UK M8 and I'm in the exact same boat. I heard that the stock recovery for the M8 is different for different providers, so not sure now feasible it is to restore stock recovery to receive the OTA, then go back to TWRP. Is there a way to manually install the update using TWRP?

So you title the thread with your own solution as well. "Cannot install update due to recovery change..." How do I install this update? "
Obviously it would mean you have to have stock recovery, not twrp.
Flash a stock recovery, reboot, install OTA update. Custom recovery can then be reflashed after the update

Is there any way to install the eye update from twrp itself ?
This is an update file right, like zip where we can flash from twrp ?
The thing is I cannot find the stock recovery for my model 2.23.118.3
Edit : Found stock recovery of my phone
Huge thanks to @vm54 fore uploading it

If flashing stock recovery is too much of a hassle perhaps you shouldn't have started flashing in the first place, yes?
You won't be able to do OTA over TWRP, even the TWRP developers said as much.
Official Updates and TWRP
Excerpt: Installing official updates from your manufacturer or carrier is not supported by TWRP.
Period.
As for the stock recovery you need. Just copy the OTA.zip file to your PC and extract the recovery.img file within the firmware.zip file.

Yes, the main reason I unlocked my bootloader ..... was just for HK mod but then only I realized that my phone is S-ON and S-OFF is only possible using sunshine.
Ok now I have the recovery.img file for my phone.
What should I do with it ?
Using hassoon2000's toolkit select 'your own recovery' and flash that's it ?
And one more question my CIDnum is t-mob009
Does that mean my mobile is tmobile based ?
In my place we have only two carriers and we don't have tmobile, sprint or verizon here.
EDIT : @mroshaw I hope you got your answer from the post #6
EDIT 2 : @BerndM14 just flashed the stock recovery and updated my phone and happy with it
Thanks for helping me mate
Good Luck
Awesome, good stuff. This will definitely help me out too.
Can I ask one quick follow up - where on the phone is OTA.zip stored? I have Root Explorer so just a matter of knowing where to look.

Brilliant, thank you so much mate! Copied that down to my PC, flashed the recovery.bin and the update applied itself just fine! Restored TWRP and I'm back in business.
Really appreciate the help from you and the OP - great stuff!

I've been wondering the same thing! I've downloaded a rooted stock ROM but havent installed it, hoping that I could get the OTA update when I do.
i've been getting whole heaps of errors on updating to lollipop.....
using the recovery found in the 1.60.707.3 gets me update to this version, then wen i try to install 2.34.707.1 ota i get red exclamation mark, upon pressing vol up + power i shows "/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml has unexpected contents" error.... giving up on ota... anyone has the ruu for 2.34.707.1 ?

I was rooted and using CarbonROM.
All I did was follow this (step 1, no GPS fix) and ran a system update from the stock ROM and I was using Stock Lolipop

hello flash stock recovery using flashify then remove root within your superuser app itself. then you will able to update. Note that your rom needs to be untouched. hope you didn't modify anything else.
@Oel I have downloaded it... Where can I find the OTA file? I will upload it when I reach home
@Vivacity I have flashed busybox Flashable zip... Hope it doesn't count as any modification...BTW what type of modification r u talking about? Can u give some examples? My phone is S-ON and bootloader is unlocked does it make any difference?

for the busybox it does count but you can still try though. concerning s-on and bootloader it does not matter.

where was it stored?
Ah..there ist a firmware.zip in the OTA file. Did you try to install this firmware zip through bootloader renamed to 0PFJIMG.zip?
After installing the orig Recovery like Vivacity mentioned? Takeout it outof the the firmware.zip from the OTA.
Or try to install the complete OTA renamed to 0PFJIMG.zip, put it on your external sd card an flash it through bootloader.
It was stored in /data/data/com.android.providers.downloads/APP_FOTA
I would go for stock recovery and unroot
I had backed up my phone before flashing busybox... Can I restore that backup file and and then flash stock recovery and unroot?

That patch is glue for root. So, when You apply update, You loose root....
Do NOT apply it if everything work as expected.

got to unroot to be able to apply the update. and then re-root. but i'm very satisfied it fixed my battery problem, i get the same awesome battery life i was getting on kitkat long ago. PS: it's been 10 hours that my phone is idle and battery did not move even by 1%.
@Vivacity plz confirm again... I have to flash stock recovery and after that I have to unroot then I can install this update normally? Is that a right procedure?
i messed up my phone yesterday while restoring twrp backup it shows an error which says E:extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255, now my phone is stuck into recovery with no system or OS, i have wiped everything, one more thing i have another error which says E Unknown File System: 'datamedia'...... plz help
