Any ideas on how to update the Android OS from (Gingerbread) Android (2.2) to something higher like (android 4.0) Without Needing a Root?
Use kfu to install twrp and firefirefire. Then flash a rom from there.
If the reason you're scared of root is because you want/need your warranty, don't worry. Amazon cannot tell if you rooted when you unroot before claiming the warranty. If you're unable to unroot because your device is bricked etc., then they usually can't even know if its rooted anyway. (Unless of course you only thought it was bricked but it wasn't really.) Trust the devs here, and just go to http://goo.gl/DtVyY and enjoy a pure android tablet!

My daughter just won a new Kindle Fire in a raffle. It's running version 10.4.3. I'd like to install stock Android Jelly Bean on it and load her favorite educational apps from Google Play. Is there any safe way to do that?
All the instructions I could find seem to be for older versions of the Kindle firmware so I'm a little hesitant to try unless someone can confirm that it won't brick the device.

Root using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959
I used this yesterday to root and install Google Play.Do this and the apps you want should work. Also you can use disable lockscreen ads and stop OTA updates once rooted.
bump!
I'm hoping someone can give instructions on how to get a custom rom on the kf2 rooted running 10.4.3. I read through all the posts on downgrading bootloader etc... I just don't want to brick before I get my fastboot cable (estimated delivery date weeks from now) and be SOL.I appreciate any instructions or advice on a method that won't brick on the current firmware. Thanks!!!!

Did you get a custom rom on your kf2 10.4.3? If so what method did you use? Thanks
I got some questions I hope you can help with. My mom has a Kindle Fire that she just got to use because she didn't have the proper internet (that's a long story).
Questions:
1. If she roots this and changes roms will she lose 'Kindle' functionality? Is there a workaround to get it back?
2. Does dual boot allow her to keep the original Kindle rom and have a custom rom?
3. She is out of town so I can't get to her Kindle right away. Does Amazon have some kind of OTA updates? Is there a way to disable them until she gets the opportunity to root? I don't want Amazon closing any security holes before the device gets modified.
Thanks!

1) Certain priveleges, like Video On Demand and Lending Library, are disabled on rooted devices. OTA Rootkeeper and other similar apps can temporarily unroot the device to access these features. I've never done it so I couldn't say how effective it is.
2) Yes
3) MoDaCo ROM, is a customized version of the stock ROM with OTA disabled and various other improvements. Like any custom ROM it is rooted, so certain priveleges will be inaccessible until it is unrooted as mentioned before. Having said that, the likeliness of getting another OTA update for this device any time soon is pretty low.

Thanks for the reply. So you can't disable OTA on the stock rom? Does it give you the opportunity to decline the update? Like I said she just started using it so she probably doesn't have any updates on it yet.

You can disable OTA on a rooted device by renaming a certain file. Otherwise, if an OTA does come around, it can't be declined. Furthermore, OTA updates have been known to soft brick devices to a point where a factory cable is needed to fix them.
With that being said, rooted Kindle Fires, and Kindle Fires running custom ROMs, require a certain level of knowledge/maintenance to make sure everything stays running smoothly. Anyone not invested/prepared is open to certain problems resulting from it.
Simply put, having a rooted/modified device is probably not the best choice for the technically challenged.
[Edit:] Also, and this is very important, if the Kindle Fire in question is brand new or purchased since Nov. 2012, you may have a 2nd generation Kindle Fire, in which case disregard everything that has been said here because you could permanently brick the device by using any of the methods found in the these (KF1) forums.

I'm pretty sure it's version 1. She has had it over a year and hadn't been able to use it until now. I'll have her check the software version to be sure. Thanks for the help.
Hopefully someone can help. So I picked up a Fire HD for a good price and I want to put KitKat on it. Every tutorial or example I find talks about the software version being 7.x.x and mine has 11-something (see pic).
Can I still blow away the Amazon software and get Android on here? Will the walk-through showing 7.x.x work? Am I even in the right section?
the 11.x.x kindles (2nd gen hd's) have the exploit patched and can't have custom recovery installed on it to allow for custom boot images to be flashed, so the only rom you can flash is kindle water beta, and its not kitkat. Unless someone find a bootloader exploit then you are not going to be able to flash any roms on it outside the one mentioned.
This may seem like a n00b question, but how would I extract my functioning system images (3.6.8) to my brick(ed) Fire Phone that was on 3.6.8 but I downgraded to 3.5.0 to try to root and now it won't register to Amazon.
I bought two exactly for this reason but unsure how to get it working.
You can not extract software without root and I doubt you could flash it on another phone even if you had it, package has to be signed by amazon. You have to use the official 3.6.8 image. I do not think what you did voids the warranty, what you did looks legal to me, I would chat with them and say what happened. They should either release 3.6.8 image or replace the phone.
I am trying to root my kindle fire 5th gen running Fire OS 5.7.0.0 but I can't find anything, not even a downgrade forum from 5.7.0.0 to something below. I just want to root my tablet and don't have anything to help me.
Same here.

Unfortunately, there is NO WAY to root Fire OS 5.7.0.0 without opening the tablet. Reasons: 1. Bootloader is locked, 2. If you attempt to downgrade Fire OS 5.7.0.0 below 5.4.0.0, you will brick your device. The ONLY way to Root and install TWRP is opening the tablet and using something conductive, using some random switch of the same size like the pins on the tablet, something to open the tablet, and a Linux Pc (Not VM, Most likely may not work) Read this post https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ick-downgrade-fire-7-ford-and-austin.3899860/ this should help root or install newer android versions and root. SuperSU link (if you successfully installed twrp) https://supersuroot.org/ link to the buttons (To unlock bootloader I guess? Btw, you need micro-soldier tools or- just click the XDA TWRP link to see what to do) https://www.amazon.com/Momentary-Tactile-Button-Switch-Assortment/dp/B07LCBLB8N/ref=sr_1_19?crid=3KB51OOE7LYGP&keywords=mini+button+switches&qid=1681097908&sprefix=mini+button+switches,aps,425&sr=8-19 If you want custom roms for this search for some. I recommend lineageos, it's similar to stock and should get the job done... GApps is here if you need it https://opengapps.org/
The Amazon link is for switches.
Rom that I know: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-unlocked-ford-austin-lineage-14-1-05-feb-2022.3962457/ Sorry, it can only go to 7.1, android 5 doesn't support certain apps, 6.0/6.1 is fine. If you hate amazon bloatware just use fire toolbox. Reply if you need anything else. Peace! - AmouuuSplat3
