Can i update from el29 stock root with rogue cwm

good evening everyone,
I am on stock root el29 with rogue cwm.
is it possible to upgrade to ff02 without resetting all of my data?
i was thinking along the lines of
- removing rogue cwm
- using the update.zip to update
- using odin oc nodata to then root
is the above possible or another way?
i like to stay stock rooted in any case.

I wouldnt try to save your data. Use Titanium backup then do the reset user data version.

If you're not willing to do a full wipe, just to get the latest release, then I would suggest to not even bother going through with it. Yes, you can use titanium backup but, but if you try to restore those in ice cream sandwich, you're asking for trouble.

Just do a clean install its easy.. just make suree once your on ics and have all your apps then you use titanium to backup the apps.. restoring apps using titanium that was backed up on a gb rom will give you problems..

N00B question: Hate new ICS need to go back to GB

A friend created a nandroid and Titanium backup for me, and my phone is rooted. I'm currently on ICS and I want to go back to GB, Do I have to Restore Epic 4G Touch With Pre-Rooted Stock Gingerbread Firmware — EL29? or can I just use nandroid recovery since it's like a full system image right?
So confused. Want to go back to old GB without losing apps or settings. Please help?

You can restore the nandroid from a safe recovery like EL26.

N00B here, seriously. I was a WEBOS fan and I rooted there but it's difficult for me to understand the terms for Android and the fragmentation doesn't help

Yes that helps. If you don't like ICS (FF18) ODIN back to EL29 (Gingerbread). thats the safest way or to keep what you had under your backup; ODIN Direct boot kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 its under the GB touchwiz based kernels. Flash that kernel, it will only boot to CWM and then restore your backup. But to let you know, there are better custom ICS ROMs that are very smooth and stable. Just make sure you use the safe kernel/recovery like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 Then you can safely wipe and flash any ICS ROMs you choose.

but will it delete my apps, settings, msgs, etc?
It seems like it will factory restore and wipe everything>
Is there a way to just use the backup and reset it to then? If so can you please dumb down instructions and what it will do? I really really appreciate any help. I'm sure that once I go through it, it will make more sense but at this time, I'm overwhelmed by all the different setups and instructions from different places.
All I want is to restore a backup I have with GB. What is the easiest way to do that without losing info?

Ok get titanium back or a backup app. Then back up all your apps, just apps not system settings. then with titanium back up you can make a flashable zip. odin back to EL29 + CWM. let it boot up. Then power off, reboot into recovery. Flash Titanium backup Zip. Reboot. the titanium backup app will be on your phone. then restore apps only, not apps with data as ICS is very different. All done

Ok will try, thanks! What's this nandroid thing all about then?

Nandroids are used to restore backups. They are backups. If you backed up a GB rom. You can restore all your settings as long as you are on a GB rom.

I would love to LOVE ICS but the only thing I want my SGII to do without apps or widgets that I have to turn on and off to use:
Control orientation: I sometimes read in bed and it irks me that I have to use an app called Autorotate Switch to stop it from switching views, it does work but sometimes cuts off the top of a chapter. I can also hear it "fighting" with the system to prevent it from rotating based on the angle I'm holding it.
Control Brightness: The lowest setting isn't dim enough and I have to use a screen filter. Now with ICS it autoadjusts the lighting even when the toggle is off the setting to adjust brightness automatically! I hate this new feature.
Social Hub: I actually like this since it integrates msg and email and fb together. The new ICS lets me easily delete without confirmation, something that's good, but it broke update syncing contacts and the emails are huge and it's a big mess with scrolling and spacing.
Camera: All I want is to assign a shutter button to a camera
Phone: I want to call out in speaker automatically. I had set this up in WebOs and it was awesome especially for driving.
I seriously would consider trying out other ROMs if they can help me do this...

How would I do this? My friend made an nandroid in GB BEFORE I upgraded to ICS. Please and thank you in advance!

That is the GB direct boot kernel that I linked it the previous reply. Flash that kernel/recovery in ODIN or mobile ODIN. Then restore back up in backup/restore option in CWM recovery.

Titanium backup safe?

Is titanium back safe to use for backing up and restoring my apps and other non system data on a epic 4G touch? I only ask cause of the emmc bug. I am running a rooted stock ff18 rom/kernel.

I never restore data when restoring my apps in batch mode on TiBu and then I go back and cherry pick data in a batch restore after my apps are loaded. It has options for apps+data, app only or data only when you do it in batch mode. System data is typically safe between the same type of rom or rom updates like ics twiz to ics twiz or aosp to aosp in my experience. Restoring system data between twiz and aosp or GB and ics will cause lots of problems that usually results in needed to start fresh. and yes it's safe the brick bug only effects factory reset/data wipe in recovery or settings. As long ad the kernel has MMC_CAP_ERASE removed its safe to wipe data/factory reset. If the kernel is labeled "safe" the command has been removed, chris41g, agat and rujelus kernels are all now safe to wipe and not encounter the brick bug :thumbup: but I still prefer to use el26+cwm just because its become a ritual to mobile Odin it when I want to use recovery, and its never caused an issue for me, I guess old habits die hard I've been using that method for 5+ months so I'm pretty set in my ways

Backup Restore!

Quick question. Before I finally start installing new ROMs for my 1st time, and I end up not liking them due to errors, how am I supposed to restore? Do I have to WIPE everything before restoring my backup to stock EL29?

Its best to wipe before installing or restoring anything.

Use kies to backup now before you start anything at a minimum.
Are you saying that you're currently pure stock el29 at the moment or is that your goal?

Question about updating profile

Before I backed up my stock rom and flashed my current one (PACman) I updated my profile just to make sure that I was good to go for a while.
Does the profile updates/PRL updates done in stock stay once you wipe everything and flash a new rom? I'm wondering because I don't get quite the signal strength that I did in PACman that I did on stock and I have no way of updating my profile inside of PACman. But, if profile updates don't stick after a wipe, what good does it do to go back & forth?
I really wish a dev would come out with an apk for each major carrier to update profiles.

Yes it does stay. When changing modems you should update again though.

Can't Update Profile
I just recently installed a JB 4.2.2 ROM from rootbox and have been unable to get my profile to update, so in turn have been unable to connect to 3G. When I got to About Phone -> Sprint System Updates the update profile option dials *22805 which never activates my phone. It just dials the Sprint customer support number.

Well, I just flashed my recovery and it won't boot past the S2 logo now. Did I miss something?

Okay, more questions!
I tried restoring my nandroid I made after rooting/kernel/ICS modem and it appears to restore correctly in CWM and then it won't get past the S2 splash screen. I did it first without wiping/factory reset and it was a no go, and then I was duh...and wiped/factory reset then restored the stock nandroid...still no go.
What am I doing wrong? In the meantime, I just restored a PACman nandroid and that went just fine and I can use my phone again.

I've been trying to find the answer myself, but the only thing I've found is that the stock recovery has to be restored on the same version of CWM it was created on. How do I do this since CWM updated itself to v6?

You flashed the EL26+CWM kernel to make the original nandroid correct? then just flash that kernel (with PC or mobile odin, doesn't matter) and then restore the nandroid.
BUT, you can skip this if you want to stay on PACman. @bilgerryan has an app somewhere in the forum that attempts to add the sprint update functionality back in to AOSP. Almost everything is broken (including PRL write and Update PRL OTA), but Profile update works without a hitch.
ALSO, take a look at the gps link in my sig. I have a link in my OP there for how to set up multiboot on the Epic Touch. That way you can multiboot into EL29 to do things like GPS lock, PRL update, Profile update, dialer codes, etc.

Okay. Yeah, i want to stay on PACman but only need to update my profile to help my signal. Okay, I will try to find that app. My PRL is up-to-date so yeah...all I need to do is update my profile, but I'm with Virgin mobile. However, I did flash the FL24 modem (sprint). This will update my profile with VM?

I decided to just try your first fix where I reflash the EL26+CWM5 kernel and flash stock nandroid. After I'm done updating things and want to go back to PACman...I simply reflash the PACman zip (to get back my PACman specific kernel) and once restore flash a backup to get all my apps & things back, right?

Well, that didn't work for me. :/ I reflashed the EL26+CWM5 kernel in mobile odin and then restored the stock nandroid. This gave me the S2 splash screen and just sat there. So, I guess I have to find that app you spoke of.

Okay, I found it, and followed all of the instructions to the "T" and when I click on Sprint System Updates, it simply makes a phone call to Sprint with a voice menu. :/
Update: Okay, I see it is also in the app drawer, but the only thing that currently works is the MSL retrieval.

Download the kernel or the rom and just flash over your restore. Your eecovery is bundled with a gingerbread kernel. So the backup you made is trying to run a gingerbread kernel. Wont work. If you flash the rom over your nandroid it will boot. You will have all system setting restored though. It sucks. But it worka.

I'm feeling a bit dumb now...
I don't quite understand the first part of what you are saying. I do understand that my nandroid cannot run without the GB kernel I made it with. So, I did reflash the GB kernal with mobile odin and then went into CWM and restored the nandroid...still didn't work.
Am I misunderstanding?

Yes. After restoring the nandroid flash whatever rom you were on again. Do not wipe. So I believe you are restoring pacman. After your restore pacman. Use the same recovery, and flash the same pacman rom again. Basically you just need the pacman kernel. Not sure if there is a aseperate kernel somewhere. But flashing the rom over top without wiping anything will restore the kernel back to what its supposed to be.

Oh. Hmmm. But I made the stock nandroid with the EL26 kernel. I don't need that one in order to successfully recover my stock nandroid?
I think we are talking about two different things. I am NOT able to restore my stock nandroid. It gets stuck at the S2 splash screen.
