Hi there, I am using CM7 RC1v2 on my motorola defy. I am facing a problem which whenever i connect my phone to windows using phone portal the usb tether cnt be checked. But when i connect using "charge only" the things become available again but i still could not connect. Anybody face this problem and can help me to solve it? Thx very much!
Phone portal run on specific IP number and it uses different port and this explain why USB tether won't run.
I'm using it and here's my steps.
AFAIK, the pc required the USB tether driver for it to run properly. It should automatic install of the required driver. Once the driver is installed, you could perform a few steps here. I'm using Windows 7
1) Goto Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center - Change Adaptor settings.
2) Disable any active Local Area Connection if there are any of them running
3) Enable the one USB tether(it might already enabled by default but you could double check it).
4) It will auto verifying and connect once it done verified.
5) Start your internet browser and enjoy(you may need to do: Internet Option - Connections - Lan Settings - Unchecked proxy server .

what's wifi adhoc for sir? is this for file sharing via wifi?
ad hoc?
if you have a laptop or a PC with wifi and already connected to internet, you can make an adhoc connection to share your internet connection with others. in normal situation we can't detect adhoc connection with our device. with this simple mod we can detect and connect to any unsecured adhoc connection.
????
I use connectify to share internet pc with wifi to my device..
Are this same purpose with different method???
yup...it has same purpose but different method.

I use " FoxFi" WiFi tethering app. Works great but make sure you set a password (my fave)! You can also use TrevE Mod WiFi tether, may not work with some roms though...( use the settings below for TrevE Mod App:
TREV E WIFI TETHER APP SETUP
Step 1. Download Wifi Tether TrevE Mod APK
Step 2. Open the Wifi Tether app, hit Menu button and hit “Settings”
Step 3. Press on “Change Device-Profile”.
Step 4. Choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)”.
Step 5. Choose “Change Setup-Method”.
Step 6. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)”.
Step 7. Choose “Send Netd Max Client Cmd”.
Step 8. You can set your wifi encryption and SSID here to whatever you’d like.
Step 9. Make sure either “WiFi-driver reload” or “WiFi-driver reload 2″ is checked on. If wifi tether fails for some reason you can change this to the one you didn’t use.
Step 10. Scroll down and make sure “MSS clamping” and “Routing fix” are both checked on.
Step 11. Turn on tethering by hitting the Wifi icon.
Step 12. You can check logs by hitting Menu button->Show Log. If you don’t see any errors you are good to go.
Step 13. Now, try connecting to your wifi tether using your computer or another wifi device. Once connected, it should show up under Access Control. (hit Menu then Access Control)
Step 14. Enjoy your wifi tether without paying carriers twice!
ENJOY!
I hope one of these will work for you!

Apparently its your service provider detecting that you are tethering....What provider do you have (Sprint, Verizon)? FoxFi tether app shoud work....I use it on all my devices...If you already have FoxFi, uninstall it and reinstall it but be sure to set a password.
Did anyone even try my post about Connections Optimizer? It's what you have to do while on stock.
When Connections Optimizer is on, your phone will randomly try to turn the wifi antenna on to "optimize" data. When it does this, it takes control of the wifi away from the tethering app. Turn it off, and this issue goes away.

I started a post in Troubleshooting about this....I can get TrevE's to work and I can download regular files but I can't download torrents and files of that nature....REALLY FREAKIN WEIRD!!! BUT - I can use FoxFi and USB tether but you have to install PDANET on your computer...when you download the app to your phone and connect via USB it will give you the option to download...
My question post in trouble shooting is labeled "How Do I Change WAP" settings...
I really believe this is the problem...
Tell me what you think and Try the USB with FoxFi..
I'm currently downloading and AOSP....ROM to see if it wifi tether will work on it...I'll post my results here...

missing a feature wifi hotspot for allowed device only
wifi for allowed device is a feature in which i can add some device to allowed list and configure wifi hotspot for allowed device only so that only allowed device in list can connect to wifi hotspot.
how it helps me!!
simple i don't have to type security key on other device.
e.g.
step1. start wifi hotspot in open mode and let other device scan and connect to it.
step2. add device to allowed list and change hotspot setting to allowed device (still it is open hotspot but other device will not be able to connect to it)
see attached image for more detail..

1. Root your phone
2. Either modify your existing APN to use IPv4 and adding 'dun' to the list of APN types, or create a duplicate APN with the same modifications
3. Set the modified/new APN as your default.
4. Download tether_counter_kill.txt from the OP's first post, and rename the file removing the txt extension (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59858654&postcount=1)
5. Install Smanager from Play Store
6. Navigate to tether_counter_kill from Smanager, and set both 'Su' and 'Boot' options. Run it (you won't need to do this again)
7. Start Mobile Hotspot on your phone, and connect to the hotspot from your devices
8. Immediately start a VPN client from your device(s) which will tether. VPN must redirect ALL traffic (e.g., TorGuard).
9. Enjoy unlimited WiFi tether

Nope, something over-writes the tethering back to "1" after each reboot. I'm sure @autoprime can figure this one out, as he did for KK.
You are right I'm on LG G2 with official T-Mo lollipop and I was able to edit settings.db...not with sglite but with SQLite Debugger.
After reboot, the changes i made to the tethering reverted back to dafault 1.
For those that want to use wireless tether, try the app from this thread (it's $2.5):

I'm more interested in making the usb tethering work. I'll try using IPv4 + vpn tonight. Pretty sure it's going to fail because of the tether.dun set to 1...

Ohh okay. even better.. ill try it and report back. thanks
EDIT:
Strange, i cant even get an SSID to show up on the native hotspot now. I know it worked before -- i used it last Sunday. The hotspot turns itself off after like 30 seconds.
Okay.. So I did a factory reset because i didnt know how to fix my problem from my previous post.
Then I:
1) added the same APN as IPV5
2) did this:
Enable developer mode (Go to Settings -> About phone, and click on the build number until the developer mode is enabled).
Enable USB debugging under Settings -> Developer options
Connect the device with a USB cable to a computer with the Android SDK platform tools installed
Start an adb shell: adb shell
In the adb shell, run this command: settings put global tether_dun_required 0
3) used the native tether app
I haven't tested it very extensively but from what i can tell, i am able to tether and it just shows up as normal data vs mobile hotspot. I transferred bout 600mb as a test. will test more later.
Thanks for your help RussianBear!
EDIT:
I lied. i think tmobile was delayed in reflecting my usage. it showed up today.
My hot-spot was broken by LP. Devices connect fine but have no Internet whatsoever. I'm able to USB tether without issues using PDANet and just selecting level 1 hide tether usage works fine. No needs for UA switching or anything like that. Just wish the WiFi tether worked, even if it's counting.

Script Works for WIFI Tether
It appears that this method is working for WIFI tethering as well. I watched an 11 minute Youtube and then emailed myself a 5.5MB Powerpoint. Here are my results:
Before After
Mobile Hotspot 92.2 92.4
Data 462.2 527.1
Not sure where that 0.2MB came from, but that's not much of my 5GB plan, so I don't much care.
Update 1: Figured out where the 0.2MB came from. My testing used all encrypted traffic over HTTPS, and TMO couldn't track it. I then ran a CNN.com video and the Mobile Hotspot counter spiked. Still not quite there yet.
Update 2: Enabled my VPN, and no traffic at all is being tracked by TMO. No user agent required. Yipee!!
