I've just installed a new ROM (custom cm7) and when I try to select the partition, it gives me this error:
"Mounting script error
Mount script cannot be created;
Code:
mount:mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2 failed: Invalid argument
"
I had same problem, when doing a factory reset with cwm it formats sd-ext too.
I don't remember exactly but i think it formats it to ext-3.
So connect your sd to your pc and format to whatever you want.

Some roms just dont work with symbolic links, no matter how you try to mount the ext, with hacks, scripts, w/e.. i learned to give up in such cases and look for alternatives, i could not get it to work not even with hacks and stuff, it might be related to specific kernel build..for instance, my current 7.2 rom in no way works with link2sd, app2sd, etc, but i got it to easily work with s2e (simple2ext) with a standard ext2 partition.. this program does not offer per-app basis control, but you can move to sd any of the: app folder, app data folder, dalvik folder, download cache folder..you can move to sd all of them or just the ones you want.. for instance, i moved to sd dalvik (90 mb), app folder (108 mb) but left in phone memory the app data folder which is in my case 78 mb, because that app data folder seems to have more influence on the performance than theapp folder, hence i prefer it on phone memory
as i said, s2e does not offer per-app control but rather per-folder, but it gets the job done.. "invalid argument" error was for me a dead end, but maybe you can get lucky
Its because your SD-EXT is not Ext-4
Try do it with phiex recovery, has the option to create a ext-4 or in your pc with magic partition
I've read a few posts about this, and it seems you need to format the partition to ext4. I guess the other options are for if you want extra partitions.
My phone is running cm-10.1-20130111-UNOFFICIAL-gio and gapps-jb-20121212-signed, and there was no problems with using link2sd.

Not really, it just gives you the option to choose what filesystem you want to use.
They all have their own advantages.
I believe it is either ext-2 or ext-3 that has the best speed, while ext-4 has a protection against corrupted files.
But if link2sd asks you what filesystem your using,
and you tell it you have ext-2 while you have ext-4, it wont work because it has to create another mount script for that filesystem.
So the problem here is either a rom that doesnt support these kinds of links or you chose the wrong filesystem (or you have no 2th partition at all).

I'm using ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 and i've seen a couple of guides where I go into the recovery and do some bits and bobs there to create it, but the only options I seem to get are to mount the sd-ext partition, which fails because it doesn't exist, or to format it.
I'm guessing there is a step beforehand i'm missing?
Thanks
download rom manager from market , open it , then create a ext3 partionion ... done
before you create a partition , backup your sd card!!

I had the same problem.
You can create the partition using the ROM Manager app downloaded from the market as yasars said.
Alternatively, if you want to do it manually, you can format the card on a *nix system. The Gparted Linux app lets you edit the partitions in a nice and simple GUI. Just remember the order of the partitions: first fat32, then about 512 MB of ext2/3/4 (ext4 may not be supported by all ROMs so better to use ext3) and lastly a swap partition of about 32 MB (totally optional). The size of the fat32 partition is whatever is left over after you've allocated the 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partitions (and the 32 MB for the swap if you decided you wanted it). For instance, for a 2GB card, leaving 512 MB for the ext2/3/4 partition (no swap) leaves us with about 1.5 GB for the fat32 partition. You do the calculations for your card in your head or on paper and use those values in Gparted.
HTH.
Thanks for the help guys
I think i'll just get it up and running using the ROM Manager and if I find the need I'll do a manual version

Yes it should be a sticky!
Having a problem when I try to use ROM Manager.
I select the 512 for EXT and 32Mb for Swap and the phone reboots.
It then shows the big triangle with Mr Android next to it until I press some buttons and then I get the recovery screen with the following messages
Finding Update Package....
Opening Update Package....
Verifying Update Package....
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid Arguement)
E:signature verification failed
Installation Aborted.
I don't have a cache folder on my sd card so i'm guessing it's looking in the internal memory?
Not sure what to do here
BACK-UP sd card before you do this.
For windows users
have clockwork recovery and rom manager on your desire
then format sd in windows.
put it in your desire and go to rom manager.
select Partition SD Card
select your space i used 32 swap 512 ext
than reboot and your sd card has the ext partition.
than put your files back on your sd card and Done

I had the same problem with ROM Manager. My solution was to downgrade ClockworkMod Recovery to v2.5.0.0 (in ROM Manager) and then partition the card. Worked on first try.
When you're done you can upgrade to latest version again if you want.
I don't think you should use a swap partition, so just set it to 0 MB.
Good luck!
Do i just need to find the 2.5.0.0 update.zip file and flash?
going to 2.5.0.0 worked
so now i have the ext partition do I need to do anything for apps to be installed there, or will they install there by default?
Also i've heard that the ext partitions can be 2 3 or 4. I'm presuming higher is better. How do I go about finding what mine is and how can I upgrade it if it need it?
Thanks

As long as you have an ext2/3/4 partition and the ROM you're flashing has A2SD support (check before you download the ROM), you are not required to do anything more. To check whether A2SD is working once you've flashed your ROM, download the Android Terminal Emulator app from the market and use the following commands
Code:
su
ls -l /data
You should see your app directory pointing to /system/sd/app and app-private pointing to /system/sd/app-private
I'm not sure which format ROM Manager defaults to, but you can always check the type of format used by mounting the card in Linux and using the GParted Linux app (you could use a card reader or use the 'Disk Drive' option in your phone to connect it to the computer). Also, ext3 should be fine for most custom ROMs. In fact, not all ROMs support ext4.

- About ext 2/3/4 I would advise the use of ext3, as ext4 is poorly supported by Roms (even those who pretend seem to have issues...)

Not in itself, no. Those symbolic links mean that A2SD is working fine. However, from what I understand about the theory, even A2SD installs a part of the app into the internal memory. That may explain the drop you see. By the way, how much free memory do you see on your device? I usually have about 140 MB free on my Desire. I read somewhere that if A2SD wasn't working, that figure would be about 90 MB.

I just recently opened spare parts apps where it allowed me to change where apps2sd installs things. By default it was set to automatic and I'm guessing that was causing the problem. I set it to external and tried installing a browser while my disk was mounted and it wouldn't let me do it. Then I set it to charge mode and it installed normally.
Some roms probably default to external while some automatic.
edit: Just installed an app that I previously installed while using "automatic" and it still uses up internal storage instead of A2SD storage. Dunno what's wrong. I am using ext2 partitioned through rom manager.
Hi XDA!
Recently, my SD card reached its limit and I now only have around 100 mb of space, no matter what I do.
Using the MIUI file manager, I can see that under the tab 'other' (i think that is what its called, danish locale), it shows 1.7 gb used storage. Searching through the objects in the category, I only see small 20-900 kb files and some 100 mb, which apparently is my backup files.
Seeing it keeps rising, I thought about formatting and start over.
Is there any folders or files (beside my photos etc.) That I need to backup prior to formatting?
Also, could I just format it using Windows, if mounted as external harddrive?
Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure there is no need for a full format, why don't you just delete the folders with those unnecessary backups and locale files?
Folders that I think need to be backuped if you decide to format afterall are those with a dot in the start of their name (altough I'm quite sure that even those are not important) and probably those that contain files that your programs use for backuping things (like notes, smsbackups, dropbox or whatever). I wouldn't format it though with windows, try sd formatter (google it) or format it with gparted just to be sure it won't corrupt your ext partition(s) if you have them...

Link2SD Problem... HELP!!!
Hello I have a HTC Desire Bravo(GSM) running CyanogenMod9 4.0.4 ICS. I have a 16GB MicroSD memory card and need to partition it to allow Link2SD to move apps and free the *tiny* storage my phone has.
I have got gParted LiveCD and I created a 1.5GB partition for Link2SD and formatted it to EXT3 (as instructed by CM9) but then when I come to open Link2SD on my phone to set it up, it asks me for the filetype so I select "EXT3" and it says the following:
Mount Script Error
------------------
Mount script cannot be created.
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2
on /data/sdext2 failed: Invalid argument
ext3 may not be supported on your device. Try FAT32
on the second partition.
Now before this I had CyanogenMod 7 build 2.3.7 and it worked fine but up until I upgraded to CM9 ICS it decides not to work. I formatted and reformatted my card to try all other options but it didn't work. Would I HAVE to use FAT32 on my second partition or is there something I am doing wrong??
Thanks
Hi
I installed (12/15/2012) [SS] Jelly Bean CM10 v2.9.1 (4.1.2) version 3.0 on my desire and followed all the settings for CPU governor and A2SD scripts. Configured my email, and installed all apps from scratch.
Everything seemed fine, worked smooth. Last night the phone crashed and rebooted and somehow lost most of the apps., including Google play which makes things harder ... Looking at memory usage, it look like there is a problem with /sd-ext.
if i open terminal, and try to run A2SD again, it also shows a problem:
/sd-ext not mounted properly, it might have errors
Found block device: /dev/block/mmcblk0ps
Removing flag a2sd
Removing flag ad2sd
Removing flag dc2sd
Setting flag a2sd
/system/bin/a2sd: line 74: /sd-ext/.a2sd: read-only file system
chmod: /sd-ext.a2sd: no such file or directory
would you also like to move DALVIK-CACHE
I put the SDcard in my computer and it showed no errors
When I go into recovery, I can mount all partiotions without problems??
For now I will go to reflash the phone and start all over.
How can I find out what happened here and how to prevent that?
And is there an easier way to repair this problem
hoping it will not occur again...
Happy new year, best whishes for everyone, and hoping for help
D.
UPDATE: cleared all data from within recovery, cleared cache from recovery and reflashed the zip
when I try to run the a2sd script error is still there!!!
put the sdcard in mu computer, deleted and recreated the partition
and then the error is gone ... ??
How did you create the partition? Use gparted or 4ext recovery only, not minitool or clockworkmod recovery
I used minitool
What is the difference?
So it will crash again?
Anything i can do as a repair or do i have to start all over again?
Thanx for your help!

Minitool doesn't create the partitions properly.
Backup your sd card to pc. Then I recommend to delete all partitions and repartition using gparted. Search for guide in development section.
Copy everything back to sd card afterwards, then rerun the a2sd commands
Sorry for not understanding ...
Can I copy the ext4 partition as well then? If I delete that, I am in the same situation as yesterday after the crash (?)
Just running the a2sd again did not work then
Thx

1. try to backup user apps only using titanium backup, don't know how many have been lost, but can try and save the others.
2. copy whole sd card to pc. this just copies the whole FAT32 partition of the sd card. you will not see the ext4 partition when connected to PC, don't worry about it.
3. delete all partitions and repartition using gparted (step 5 here)
4. copy the backup back onto sd card.
5. full wipe everything from recovery, flash rom, run A2SD commands and reboot etc.
6. restore any apps using titanium, should go to partition automatically if everything is working. install another app like diskusage to browse all your partitions.
How to fix the dreaded sd-ext not mounting properly, or fix A2SDGUI not rebooting/crashing
The reason this happens is because you have flashed a rom that doesnt support ext4. You will have to change the ext4 partitiion to ext3 in order to get a2sd to install properly.
If you have backed up your data and just need to get a2sd running follow this guide, I am not responsible for lost data or a corrupt sd card
1) Download aparted app. WARNING: If used incorrectly you can destroy the data in your sdcard
Click tools. There should be a partition called FS: ext4, Select it, then press delete(WARNING DATA FOR APPS WILL BE LOST)
2. Click create, then select EXT 3 this time, and the default size 999, dont touch any other settings or you'll corrupt your sdcard, dont touch the init and end parameters!
3. REBOOT the phone
4. Then try a2sd install in terminal or if your using the A2SDGUI, click Dalvik, select Dalvik on SD-EXT, then hit Move and Rebuild, wait for it to reboot, if it does not reboot hit Move! and wait for it to reboot. It should reboot, if it doesnt reboot or crashes you didnt read step 3 when I said to reboot your phone after adjusting the partition, or you mistakenly chose ext4 partition!
If your were silly enough not to backup your data, you can download gparted iso and boot it using your PC. Then connect the phone and goto the ext4 partition and COPY all the files and paste it in a temporary folder. Then delete the partition, then create an EXT3 partition and PASTE back all the data files in the ext3 partition.

Eh?
- The ROM supports ext4 just fine, most ROMs here do. ext4 is also faster than ext3...
- The problem was that the partition was poorly created in minitool partition wizard, likely that it was not properly aligned.
- The issue has already been solved...9 months ago...
Its time to use Link2SD on the Arc (Xperia Ultimate HD Rom, Locked BL), so I've partitioned my sd (Main 27.76GB fat32 and 2GB ext2).
Link2SD recognizes the partition but when I try to move facebook (and other apps like OfficeSuite,TrackID)
I always get this failure message:
pkg: /vendor/app/facebook.apk
Failure
[INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_INSTALL_LOCATION]
Root Explorer was moved successfully but 728KB are still in phone memory (just a move to sd not link2sd)
I reformatted-repartitioned (+ext4) with the same result. Am I missing something?
Odp: [Q] Link2SD Error [Invalid Install Location]
I had similar problems. The reason is /vendor partition in Arc. I think this partition cannot be mounted r/w. The best solution is to flash LT18i stock ftf. Arc S has bigger /data and /system partitions and stuff from /vendor is mostly moved there.
Other idea is to try manually move files from /vendor/app to /data/app using file explorer. Then reboot and then try to use Link2SD. But I remember I had problems with few apps and also it can cause some errors and missing apps.

you can not use an 2 gb ext2 partition. it must be 1024 mb or smaller. for using ext4 partitions, you have to flash a kernel that supports ext4, i think stock kernel doesn't support that.
vendor apps can be moved, i have done that hundred of times

I deleted those vendor apps with Titanium and re-installed them (became non-vendor), so link2sd could do its job and move them to my 2GB ext2
You don't need Titanium for that. Just open Link2Sd and convert the system app to user app by clicking on the app, then click on the three dots on the top-right corner, then select Converto to user app. After that you have to restart and then you can move to sd, or link if you want to.

Yup, If you don't even know what it can do for you, you probably don't need it you will have freedom to use any regions/ carriers Roms etc IF you know what you're doing and how you're doing it. BUT it also makes Hard Bricking the device that much easier

This is what I did for Lollipop (probably will NOT work for Kitkat):
1) Unmount SDcard.
2) Place SDcard in a SDcard reader for a PC.
3) Backup SDcard making a note to look for hidden files.
4) Use MiniTool Partition Wizard to delete all partitions SDcard.
5) Create a primary partition using most of your disk space using fat32 leaving a few GB(I'm using 3GB of 64GB SDcard) for the Link2sd partition.
6) Create a second primary partition with the remaining space using ext2 file system.
7) Restore your files to the primary fat32 partition.
8) Copy the zip file from this thread to the fat32 partition.
9) Return SDcard to phone.
10) Make sure phone mounts SDcard.
11) Boot to recovery and install zip file you copied in step #8.
12) Reboot to system to make sure everything is still working.
13) Run Universal Init.d App. Reboot.
14) Install and run Link2sd from play store.
15) Reboot as necessary. I believe it should only be once... but not sure.
16) Use Link2sd to move apps to second partition on SDcard.

16) Use Link2sd to move apps to second partition on SDcard.

okay i just got to trying this and i still get the mount script error invalid argument . i believe this is because the script may not be staying in the init.d app on reboot because no new script shows up in it for link2sd unless it doesnt have one but any how its not successful for me.

How clean is your device? I mean have you installed other mods before trying this one? I had a pretty clean Lollipop system. Just TWRP recovery, supersu and a view apps that use root, but nothing that modified the system(AFAIK).

Its good I have a few other apps and music but still only very basic when it comes to customizations and tweaks. I have tried to install the KitKat version of the tweak previously to see if it works.

I wonder if the KitKat version is causing the problem? Do you have a clean backup with no patches available?

No I don't think so and the KitKat version worked for some people on lollipop too. I don't think they would be interfering because I had this issue before too

Any progress?
My phone was unstable I think because I removed the wrong system apps with Titanium backup so I started with a clean Lollipop installation and reinstalled all my apps leaving my SDcard unchanged. Everything is fine now. I used Link2sd on most of the non-system apps and now I have 2.29 GB free. I think most of the space comes from getting all most of the Google apps to the SDcard.
A couple of things to check.
1) Verify your second partition is set to primary and ext2.
2) Make sure universal init.d is on by testing it @ the bottom. It should say "Your Kernel Has init.d Support" after you have turned it on.
