[Q] Can't install CM9 WHY??? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys!!!
I want to install the CM9 to my xperia play, but i cant. Ive got a Sony ICS kernel with recovery and I tried to install an ICS rom and its worked (AOKP,HybridRom,DoomLord's leaked ICS Rom) My question is: The CM9,CM10 are just working with the fxp kernel??
If you need some Pic what is show up in the recovery just say: I need Pic!! ( I cant go into recovery right now )

Sony kernel won't work. you need cm kernel for it to work.

so i need to flash the fxp kernel wich is included in the zip?

Question [Q] Can't install CM9 WHY???
Like Lordomn said you need a compatible kernel! CM9 & CM10 come with there own kernels( fxp) they are inside the zip file you download.(You will find a boot image this is your kernel:goodYou need to extract this and flash with flashtool/fastboot or download a compatible kernel which you can find in the forums there are quite a few.:good:Basically cm need kernel's for the version you are using you can't use ICS kernels
So don't use ICS kernel's in any CM :crying: Use either fxp included in rom or download one from development section

Thank you

Cool! Don't forget to do full system wipe:
In cwm wipe Cache/Data/Factory Reset in Mounts & Storage Format Data/Cache/System (NOTHING ELSE!)This will give you a clean system to install CM9 or CM10:good:

The incremental update is not the full ROM, they're just small updates for phones already running the ROM. The full ROM will be about ~100+ MB. Also, you will need to have an unlocked boot loader and a custom recovery. Once you have that knocked out just Download the ROM and put it in your SD card. Make sure you wipe all data after you make a backup of your current ROM. Finally, Flash the ZIP and reboot your phone. One more thing, with the CM9 ROM, you need to download the ICS GAPPS so you have the Market and etc. Enjoy.

I know that I said I know how to flash and I just want to know step by step on flashing incremental I have the full rom and I have everything ready but I don't get the part about stocks kernel? I know what kernel is I just want to know what he means by stocked kernel as in the sence kernel or a different kernel
The stock kernel is the kernel included with the rom. If you have flashed a different kernel you must find out which kernel was included with the version of cm9 you are running and download to SD card, then flash. Then flash incremental. Also do not skip incremental. Flash in order of date after your rom download. Example rom- 6272012 incremental-6282012.
I feel more like I do now then I did then.
Thanks

Try out the Mason kernels and see how they treat you. I think the JMZ CM9 Kernel is the Mason kernel. Also, look for the unreleased Mason kernels as they might include new performance fixes and possibly hardware fixes. I heard a rumor of WiMAX hitting CM9.

JMZ stated that if you flash a custom kernel after flashing a nightly ROM you will need to flash the SAME custom kernel after flashing the incrementals I believe he has gone back to the evervolv kernel on latest ROMS for compatibility issues

Need help picking a ROM / kernel

I've rooted my HTC Evo 4G (not LTE). I tried to set up a swap partition and learned that i need a different kernel. Regardless of whether or not i use swap memory, I'd still like to find a good ROM/Kernel. I'd love ICS, but they all say that 4g and the camera doesn't work yet. I have trouble finding the most up to date information. Recommendations on ROMS / Kernels / combinations?

Okay, I found the kernel ... now I need to find the rom, right? because if I flash the kernel into the stock rom it will freak out ... so it's just a matter of executing two zips from recovery, the rom then the kernel? or am i forgetting something?

As long as the kernel matches the stock rom you can use it. It needs to be a git gingerbread sense kernel of you are on 2.3.3 or 2.3.5 stock if you're on 2.2 stock needs to be a froyo kernel. If you go to something like cm7 or decks reloaded, anything aosp based make sure you use an aosp gingerbread kernel. If you try ics and want a custom kernel or jb make sure to use matching kernels or you'll end up in a bootloop and need to reflash the rom to fix the kernel
Edit: when flashing make sure to do the proper wipes. For a rom wipe everything but the SD card, for a kernel or a modification wipe only cache and dalvik cache. When flashing a rom and a kernel at the same time, wipe everything but SD for rom then wipe.cache and dalvik and flash the kernel

Yes cm7.2 is a rom, I always used tiamat 4.1.0 on cm7.2. The kernel will add different governors, clockspeeds for overclocking, change the scheduler and allow for undervolting. The kernel is what allows the rom to talk to the hardware and vice versa, it contains all of the drivers for the hardware.

Hi arona the best way to find the best kernel would be to give all of them a try as different kernels react differntly on different one x. But if your wanting gaming I'd give kozmic a try first and also make sure you have renovate gaming boost on your phone.
There isn't the best kernel.
XM kernel have a governor called "Gaming" and it's good for game.
You have to try the various kernel and choise the yours

Yes to both and if you want link to xm kernel here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136731 just be sure to pick sense kernel and modules.
hi guys , sorry i'm new in HTC one x , so i need more helps for installing XM kernel .
i downloaded xm_kernel_188v4_sense.zip file and in installing tips it says that i need to flash this zip file with recovery and then do a wipe dalvik cache , there is no prob in this steps , but after that it says clear fastboot cache and then flash the kernel image with fastboot . how can i do this last two steps ? and the kernel img file is the img file in xm_kernel_188v4_sense.zip ??
and if anything goes wrong how can i return to stock kernel ??
and this kernel has higher clocks by default right ? i mean i can set higher clock speed with OC apps with this kernel or i need to do some changes before i can overclock ??
For flash the kernel you have to:
1) Extract the ***.img file from zip
2) Coping the zip on your sd
3) Reboot in recovery
4) Flash the zip and after a wipe dalvik+cache
5) Reboot in fastboot usb
6) Make an erase cache with the command fastboot erase cache
7) Flash the ***.img with the command: fastboot flash boot *name_of_file*.img
8) Reboot into system with: fastboot reboot
xm kernel doesn't support oc

Hi arona to flash the kernel extracct boot img from the zip with winrar or 7zip do into bootloader select fastboot and plug into pc, goto the fastboot file you have on comp and put kernel inside folder with adb and fastboot files. Then hold shift and righ click in folder and pick open comand prompt here. Then type fastboot flash boot (name on extracted boot.img) without brackets then fastboot erase cache. If you want to go back to stock just do same again but with the stock kernel. Hope that's a bit of help.
There is no "This is the best Kernel Ever" as it is entirely subjective.
Only you can tell yourself what the best Kernel for you is.
Some focus on battery, some focus on performance. Do your research, try some for yourself and see what YOU prefer.

I'm thinking test your ROM, but whats is the kernel included in the zip file?
Lupus v11? 3.X Kernel?
The main post said dont work JB Camera (4.2.2). There is other camera app included in ROM (CM camera 4.1.2 perhaps) or we must install other third party camera app.

Others seem to be having no problems. Perhaps its something to do with gapps. I'm assuming you used full gapps. Try the mini or light version of gapps. So long as u done your full wipes I can't see any other reason. Maybe try flash ROM let it boot then go back to recovery and flash gapps.
Edit - OK so apparently light gapps just causes FC'ing I'll link to other gapps when I'm home.
i flashed this ROM with full Gapps in Xperia Arc S, and it's working really fine, until now had twice random reboots, but that's not really a problem to me.

See I'm pretty sure its the kernel giving random reboots. But with LuPuS or Fusion kernel, WiFi and Bluetooth will not work on 4.2.

All 4.2 ROMs changed firmware binaries and changed wifiload script. But... suppose I could try get get kernel to install and use old firmware binaries and run lupus wifiload script?? We will see!! maybe I'll push back kernel update until I give it a go and get someone to test.

Hi,
May I also post on the Pro version here? There is no seperate thread for it.
It's my first attempt on a custom rom after using stock ICS. Unfortunately, I found it to be very unstable
My first attempt was Lupus/v21, now I'm on Fusion/v22. Both seem to be highly unstable. Just using apps is normally fine, but a few things seem to provoke lockups including unlocking the screen, listening to music and using the camera.
I did a full wipe before installing (system, cache, dalvik cache, data), I even tried the permissions fix.
Otherwise it seems a great rom, perfect feature set and very fast, but the unstability makes it unusable for me

Yes u can post here also. Comparing any 4.2 ROM to STOCK ICS, stock ICS would be the winner in terms of stability. 4.1 is the best if you want JB IMO. But 4.2 and especially PAC 4.2 has a lot more features, customization amongst other things. It doesn't matter on the kernel its going to be the same. This is why FXP stopped developing after CM10 for the XPERIA 2011 line-up. It will never be 100% stable as will any 4.2 ROM for Xperia 2011.
I don't know what calls you stabillity, but 4.1 is very stable, almost as 4.0. 4.2 isn't stable specially with 3.x kernels, but 4.1 is perfect. And FXP stop the development for 2011 line becase they have to develop for a lot of devices, i think.

I said 4.1 is stable. And no they stopped because without a stable 3.x kernel it would be impossible for a stable 4.2 J. There was no 3.x kernel for 2011 device back then, but even still they knew if there was a 3.x kernel it would need a lot of work to get stable, if it even can.

Yes, it's possible, just flash the kernel you want with cwm without wiping system or data. (Note that the kernel must be compatible with the rom!)

It is possible, but I don't think there is an overclocking kernel for PA yet. Deedwar wants to include it, but hasn't come to it yet. The AOSPA legacy ROMs will definitely not have overclocking though.
Hello @deedwar, @Redstarr1!
While we're on the subject, i was wondering if you could explain to me is it possible to use the boot.img from the newest experimental CM11 build by RaymanFX and use it (flash it) in AOSPA Legacy builds by Deedwar? Considering that the AOSPA legacy builds have cm as a base.
Thank you in advance!

Not this time you cant. He has upgraded a few very key areas that require newer sources that need to be included in the ROM itself. So you will have to wait till i get around to editing the kernel and adding it to my github for AOSPA to build from.
