[Q] GS3 Battery High Android System Usage - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi there
I've got the Samsung GS3 i747 running 4.1.1 and my battery life on my GS3 is quite bad.
from 100% charge using battery save mode, dim screen, no live wall papers, no sync my battery lasts on average 8 hrs.... i had to purchase 2 additional batteries just to ensure i have enough battery for a day. I ensure i don't have multi tasking apps and i clear the ram as often as i can and i do not excessively use the phone, occasionally check emails and text messages
When i check battery usage i get this:
android system 25%
phone 14% (I didn't even call anyone today...)
Android OS 12%
MAPservicesamsung 10%
screen 10%
other apps
Would anyone know if there are any particular apps that are culprits of using high OS/ System usage?
Thank you!!

Did you try searching first? There are many many threads for similar issues?

Yeah, i checked out other threads where i read restricting Rogers Visual Voice mail app, Samsun account, samsung apps, samsung backup provider, samsung cloud data relax, samsung push services. but even with those "frozen" my usage is still very high

If you are on stock, atleast on at&t stock, there was a typo in amount of current used by system, which in turn falsified the report. So if you are on stock, maybe that would be worth looking into.
This has been corrected in custom ROMs.
And unless, your battery is don't fast, this shouldn't really be a matter of concern.
Also, install some app like better battery stats to check for any rogue app.

has it always been this bad? did you update it to 4.1.1 yourself?

I have my device stock and rooted and i removed some of the bloatware. I've used AVG antivirus software but still no change.
Would posting any other information be of help to diagnose the problem?
I've noticed the high system usage only when i upgraded to jellybean. On Ice Cream Sandwich my highest usage was screen.

What all did you wipe before updating? As with custom ROMs, there can still be issues changing firmware (even stock firmware to stock firmware) without doing a full wipe. If you have not done so, and have exhausted all measures of research, I would backup and wipe data/cache, reflash, wipe again, enjoy

Using BetterBatteryStats, i've found that Partial Wakelocks has high MediaScannerServices.
Is there a way of disabling this? I've read that downloading rescan media root from the market would help but it hasnt in my case. i thought of manage applications and disable media storage obviously all it did was disable my external SD.

I don't get that cos I freeze gallery app. I use it only when I need to change my lock screen wallpaper.
I use quickpic as gallery app replacement.

Did you try wiping dalvik in recovery and checking?
If you are looking at battery usage from settings, it won't be reset until battery is at 100% again.

no luck one again. do you think changing to a different ROM could possibly fix the issue? or would I simply be wasting time in doing so?

if your issue is still unresolved, i would back up your texts, pics, vids, etc. if you make a titanium backup, please do not backup or restore system apps. i would boot into stock recovery and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. then i would snag odin and flash the latest official stock firmware from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625&highlight=stock+firmware. next, boot into stock recovery and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache again. reboot and let the phone chill for a few before going nuts with it. after setting up your account, just install the basic apps you need or will use over the next 24 hours. dont barrage it with everything all at once. report back

[Q] The Number "0" Shown in Spare parts what does this mean??????

In the picture below you will see the number "0" in spare parts under network usage. I have searched the XDA threads and tried google and have found no answer. This "0" never use to be there before and is using a lot of data which is killing my battery. Yes I have always wiped when going to a different rom, I have even tried reinstalling my rom again and fully wiping. The rom I am currently running now is airborne 5.1 with kernel SBC for Netarchy's 4.2.2 More Aggressive CFS SBC-net-4.2.2-more-havs-cfs-v7. I also know the kernel is not a problem because when I reinstalled the rom I did not add any of my apps or nothing and nor did I flash anything else. I just let my Rom load up downloaded spare parts just to see if the "0" was there and it wasnt, but once i rebooted my phone just to make sure it was really gone, I went back into spare parts and it was there again. Now my question to you guys is how do I get rid of this problem?

[Guide] battery fix

Well I was having horrible battery problems and came across a how to on the web and thought I would share this. Hopefully it hasn't been shared already and I apologize if it has. Its a way to wipe battery stats. MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS AT 100% BEFORE DOING THIS
1. Boot into cwm recovery
2. Scroll to advanced
3. Scroll to clear battery stats
4. Reboot phone
5. wait for your battery to fully die before charging it again
And there you go its a pretty simple fix and is good if you have flashed a lot of roms. The guide said not to do it very often tho so I would be cautious but I did it once and now I am getting almost a day and a half with moderate use out of my stock battery! I have seen a lot of complaints about battery life.
Hope this helps let me know your results as I am new here

After doing some research I did see that on androidcentral but can't wiping the stats when your on a new rom improve how your phone reports the battery stats as well?

If on a new ROM, you probably wiped /data, meaning... no more battery stats.
While I'm not sure if wiping the battery stats works or not, I just posted the following in the thread of the ROM I'm currently using since battery life is a big topic there. This is a guide that I came up with after a couple of weeks of analysis and tweaks:
I'm getting at least 48 hours on my battery now, no lie. I've made it a mission over the past couple of weeks to track down all my wakelocks and get rid of all the unnecessary processes that cause those wakelocks.
After 2+ weeks of analysis using a combo of betterbattery stats, badass battery monitor, and the stock battery info, here's a list of what I've done along with running TDJ's Evo3v7 Rom.
DISCLAIMER: These are my findings for my phone and my setup in my location and my typical usage which have worked for me:
-Make sure screen brightness is set to 'Automatic'
-Use Wifi as much as possible Vs data.
-From what I've read Facebook uses a ton of battery (wakelocks) when syncing in the background. I may be the only person on earth that doesn't have a fb account so I don't have to worry about it on my phone, but just keep that in mind.
-Under Accounts and Sync try to funnel as many accounts as you can THROUGH gmail. In your Gmail account sync only what you need when you need it. Do you really need the browser, contacts, web albums, etc synced. Can you live with manually syncing calendar once a day? Keep it to a minimum.
-Disable everything under Settings > Sound > System (the 4 items at the bottom of that list, keytones, touchsounds, screen lock sound, vibrate on screen tap)
-Make sure if you have a weather app that refreshes automatically to only have it refresh to what you need. Some of these refresh every 15min. Really? Just have it refresh manually or on unlock. I've found that to be fine.
-Make sure you're signed out of Latitude after you use it - if you use it. You can't freeze, uninstall etc, without freezing/uninstaling Maps, so make sure you are not signed into Latitude (or any other location service based apps).
-Location, location, location... Under Settings > Location Services uncheck all 3 options... may need a reboot to 'stick' after unchecking (these are sometimes checked by default when first booting up your device from flashing a ROM or you check them not knowing what all they do (I know I did at first). They are helpful when restoring but are a pain on the battery in daily use. This choice is yours as there are other recovery/restore methods but I've found that I don't need these checked at all. (Sometimes even going to Google.com enables the location service and it gets stuck in perpetual wake state, I've found).
-If you don't use Google Talk, simply remove it. Although I've found that 'GTALK_...' still has wake states even with it removed (phone still communicates with Google servers even when the app is removed), it's not near as much as it used to be.
-Freeze the Maps app - if it's feasible. Maps is one app that runs 100% of the time. Take a look in your 'running apps' and see for yourself. I rarely use my maps so I froze it. Since then, location services processes have dropped dramatically as have my wakelocks associated with location. This alone has helped out my battery tons. If I need to use maps, I simply unfreeze it.
-Finally, download and flash this by eugene373: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...30&postcount=1 This has saved me more battery than most of the things listed above combined.
Hmm your link to Eugene's thread didn't work. But thanks for the info. And I guess that does make sense that wiping data would also wipe battery stats. That's why I'm a little confused about half the people say it works and the other half say it does so I figured I'd try it out

While I agree that turning off services or freezing them does help battery life, it kind of ruins the whole smart phone experience. The reason I have a smart phone is for up to date info at a quick glance. I am sure the info you provided will help some though. Thanks for posting.

[QA] Anyone getting frequent FC'ing with JB?

Hey folks,
Is anyone else noticing fairly frequent FC'ing of apps in JB? Generally when closing them or something?
Some issues are to be expected, just wondered if anyone else is experiencing it.
Using the stock bootloader, radio image too.
Before install I cleared caches + davlik too.
Everyone's having FC issues with JB.
It's a new version of Android, you should expect that. The apps just need to catch up to it.

I half expected it, just wanted to make sure I wasn't alone. It doesn't happen often enough to be a great concern.
No...no.
Not everyone is.
I never did. And I ran it for three days...with heavy use.
You should really be wiping data as well, my friend.
This would probably be why you're seeing FC's.

OP led me to believe you only wiped cache.
My apologies.
I have flashed like three JB roms within the past week and a half, and have used each of them heavily. I don't think I have seen that force close pop-up yet. So yes, not everyone has these problems, and fully wiping is a great thing. I always: wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format system, format data, flash SuperWiteLite, then flash my rom (exactly in that order) and have never had a single problem with JB in general.
I've only had one app force close.
if you're having multiple apps force close, it may help if you fix permissions.

I'm only getting FC's on the twitter app.
That explains it. Twitter and Facebook app. Those are the two I've noticed it on. Nothing else.

Specific apps just aren't playing well with JB. There isn't even a full 4.1 SDK yet. Give it some time. Gotta remember there's no official JB updates yet, so you can't really expect apps to be updated for it.
I expected issues. What I am looking for is confirmation from other users of these crashes and that it isn't just my handset.

I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DONT DO THIS... Maybe it was just a fluke with my phone, but after doing this my phone wouldnt charge... kept saying charging paused battery temp. too high/low....wouldnt even charge when powered off and i had to get a new phone.
This occured after installing apps one by one and only restoring data for 2 games. i didnt install any system apps from my old phone.
if you decide to do it tho i'd like to know if you encounter the same issues that i had.

That's strange. I've got a bunch of apps so it'll be a pain in the ass to install them one by one but I don't want any problems.
Mass restoring user apps with data has never been an issue for me. I've done it between all my devices...but of course if you do run into issues, you have to go back and see which app is causing any instability. Chances are you'll be fine

Media Server?

My battery had been better lately, but today it seems pretty bad. I checked my battery and it says "media server" is taking up the vast majority at 48%. Screen is next at 13%. What exactly does media server encompass?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
For some reason it seems like the process that scans the ohone and sd for media files gets hung up. Not really sure why though. Haven't had it happen in a while so its hard to investigate.
Try wiping dalvik and cache on media server in app management.
If that doesn't help, nandroid backup, then wipe cache, dalvik and fix permissions in recovery.
If that fails to fix then try copying all your data off the sdcard, reformat and tgen out your data back on.
In dev options tick show cpu usage and you'll probably seed that media scanner process at the top.

Thanks for the reply. I looked and can't see options to do that. I'm assuming it's because my phone is still stock. The only things I've done to it are the update and running Nova Launcher. I'm not rooted, I haven't gotten the courage to do that yet, although I think I'm pretty close to deciding to do it.
It's not going to find many media files...I delete photos after they're uploaded to G+ and I don't even have any music stored on it, I use Google Music for that.
Will rooting my phone and deleting all the media hub and allshare junk fix this problem? It hasn't happened to me before, but today it wasn't getting used much, that's why the battery drain really surprised me.

You should be able to still clear data/cache on media server. Settings > App Manager > All tab
Find media server and you should be able to do it there.
You don't need lots of files to have the process hang up. It could be looking for a folder that's not there, or any number of things. That's why I suggested formatting your sdcard and see if it still happens. Otherwise since you're not rooted your only two other options I can think of are factory resetting, or odin flashing the stock FW. (Btw if you do that you may as well use MrRobinsons root66 fw. Then you'll get root at the same time! Very easy and safe to do)
If you want, get aLogcat from the market and run it, and save the logfile. Post it here if you like and me or someone might be able to find a clue as to what's happening. If you do this, also use the show cpu usage option to verify that the top process is in fact com.media.xxxx or something like that. It'll help to know what to look for in the log.
