[Q] Question about ROAMING - HTC One V

Hi all,
I just have a quick question about roaming on the htc one V (virgin mobile, primo C). If you enable roaming then does it cost extra? Does it charge you extra if you enable it? And also, what does "roaming" mean? What are the benefits. I have a poor understanding of this concept so please be patient with me. Thanks!

If you move out of your state then that's roaming. You will be charged high data rates during roaming.
If you click 'enable data roaming' you won't be charged as long as you are in your own state and not out of it.

Why should i use roaming? what are the benefits?
I don't go out of state so would it be advantageous for me to use it? Will it cost extra?

If you don't tick the enable data option and travel out of state you won't be able to connect to data.
Roaming is not an application dude. And yes it will cost you, much more than what you're currently using.

Well, first of all, read this: In wireless telecommunications, roaming is a general term referring to the extension of connectivity service in a location that is different from the home location where the service was registered. Full info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaming
So, if you don't leave your state, you're not roaming. OK? :fingers-crossed:

First of all, he is with Virgin Mobile. They do not support roaming, so it doesn't matter whether it is checked or not. He will never get service from any tower except his home service provider.

My data speeds increase when I have roaming checked on so why is this happening?

Going abroad.

I'm going on holiday to the Netherlands for a week and don't want to get charged for data whilst roaming.
What are the things I need to disable on my phone and how do I do them? I thought it was just a simple case of switching it to aeroplane mode but I want to make calls back to the UK because its free with the flexible booster I have with T-Mobile.
Thanks in advance
You can put a widget to enable / disable data transfer (add widget -> Settings --> Mobile network ).
You can also disable data tranfer while roaming: menu -> settings -> Wireless & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Data roaming (on top)

And your second suggestion is enough?
What about pressing the power button and turning off data, is that a more reliable method?

Since you are on T-Mobile UK and heading to Europe, you shouldn't actually need to do anything at all now.
See here.
The important section is here:
What happens when I want to use Internet on my phone or my laptop in an EU country?
When you try to connect to the Internet either from your phone or your Mobile Broadband enabled laptop, you will be prompted to purchase a Booster by either an SMS or by a landing page in your internet browser. You will not be able to use any Internet services until you have purchased a Booster.

I can confirm that when I recently went to Paris, I was unable to use the internet until I purchased a booster. My advice though is to buy a booster anyway, and use internet sparingly (emails, occasional browsing etc).
Regards,
Dave
Thank Dave, that was a really useful link. I was really paranoid about the cost incurred about Facebook updates and emails notifications sent to me. in the background. I think this clears everything up.
It really is time the networks sorted this out, they are all across europe, so there is no need to charge exhorbitant rates once you leave your home country, unless they do it purely as a profit maker.............................

Which is pretty much the reason they do it.
To be honest, the T-Mobile UK euro boosters aren't too bad, but I think the £40 booster should have at least 1gb to be really useful.

Dave
data-only sim card
You can buy a data-only sim card for your device. When I was travelling to Europe (Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany), I used MTXConnect, quite simple, you can use it the whole day for fixed price or pay only for Mbs when you need it.

Use in europe

I have a Verizon Droid Incredible 2 from Verizon. I will be in Europe for 2 weeks.
I know what my SIM card number is and will call Verizon before I leave for them to activate it for Europe.
What else do I have to do? Verizon said I should enable Wi-Fi and disable data roaming.
How do I disable data roaming? Why? Here, I get 2 GB of data, bit have never used it.
Thanks, cb

I'm not sure if there's anything else you have to do.
The setting is in settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks. You should turn that off because your 2gb of data is only for the US and the international data roaming charges are ridiculous! Just the normal android syncing will cost your first born child, your primary arm and 4 toes of your choice. Lol

When I get to "Mobile Networks" I have "Enable always-on mobile data" and it has a green checkmark.
Should I remove the green checkmark?
In "Data roaming" there is "Deny data roaming access" and that has a green check.
I have never changed these settings and am nervous about the whole thing.
Thanks, cb

Sounds like you're all set. The Deny Data Roaming Access is the one you were looking for and its already set how it should be.
The other setting will allow the data network to turn off while its not in use for battery savings but can make some apps not sync correctly. I usually leave that one checked.

When we are in Europe and want to call each other's cell phone or to call to the US, I know we start with +1 before the phone number.
Do we follow the +1 with another 1 then the 10 digit number as we do here at home?
Example +1 1 (area code) 555-1212
Thanks, cb
I know that when I go to Canada I only have to dial 1 then the area code and phone number I'm not sure if its different in Europe or not. Somebode else will have to step in for that answer.
Have you tried looking on vzw.com? Your answer might be there. I would look but their mobile site sucks for anything like that.

[Q] Is there any way to disable 4G on D851?

Hi guys, I'm living a non-4G country. I think D851 support 4G so it'll always look for 4G network. That'll drain battery much.
So, I dont know there's any way to disable it? I only use GSM/WCDMA. My phone is rooted without custom Recovery
Thanks

When I go to Mobile Data in settings it says "disconnected" and when I go to APN it says " Access Point Name settings are not available for this user" Is this the problem ? This is one of those things that can be most easily solved by calling your operator. When I got my phone and put in the sim card, I had no data. I called O2 and they guy walked me through the setup. It might be a noob way to solve problems, but it definitely works.

It did not matter for me. I have an unlocked phone and a sim card from O2. O2 is providing me with the service, it's their job to make sure it works. My phone was brand new, so it would be safe to assume that there was nothing special about it. Also, here in Germany I can always return the sim card and void the contract within two weeks after buying it, so the network wants to keep me happy .

Data connection switch 2G/3G/4G missing

Hello guys.
I need another tip as I am not running AT&T network in Europe I wanted to ask you if you are able to switch manually between network types 2G/3G/4G. The phone connects me to 4G regardless to how bad the reception is, and in that areas I want to be able to swotch from 4G to 3G.
Does any of you have a solution for this item?
Your responses will be appreciated.

As far as I've ever known, the only way to really impact that without root would be to change APN settings. I can't really provide specifics on this device, but there definitely isn't a quick and easy way to toggle between them.

You saved me from selling my beloved S7 Active! After searching (camo green, unlocked) from about 2 months, I bought it a week ago. I'm using "MINT SIM". So on default network settings, I'm fine outdoor, but indoor situation is horrible, it keeps me in LTE (barely 1 bar). So calls were getting disconnected. I don't care about data in my house, as I'm on WIFI all the time. Now, from your provided code, I selected 'Global Auto' and I'm getting ALL bars of network! It is connecting me to UMTS automatically! Data speed good enough for me! I don't have to sell it anymore! Thanks a lot!!
