What are the ways you can get hard bricked and why does it hard brick?
Flashing a ROM for another phone on this phone.

Are you trying to brick it? Usually the only way the phone will brick is if you flash a wrong rom on it like a rom meant for another phone or a kernel not meant for the phone.
A ROM can't brick you. It's the kernel that bricks you. If you want to try, flash a ROM from another phone and then flash a kernel for the Hercules and see what happens (bootloop on Samsung logo).

I hard bricked after flashing AOKP build 3 through CWM 6.0.2.7 a couple weeks ago. I hadn't had any problems with that recovery or my flashing procedure before (nandroid backup, wipe cache, format /system & /data, wipe /dalvik, flash ROM, flash gapps), but I must've goofed somewhere.

I don't think he's trying to find out how to brick, but more like trying to find out how to avoid bricking. I know I was nervous and took a week to psych myself up just to root my device after getting it since I had no idea how exactly one would brick a device. I just knew it was a possibility and didn't want that, lol.
if you do a odin flash and the phone gets disconnected before its finished flashing the important files like the sbl, zimage, or modem thats a definite way to hard brick! (happened to me when i had a vibrant)

Wait even if you flash a ROM from another phone doesn't it include the kernel leading to a brick?
Or am I just misinformed lol

Don't believe this is an update. This is simply the stock firmware that came with the phone. It might come in handy if/when something goes terribly wrong and a backup won't fix your issue.

I'm curious if by flashing this it resets the Device Status to "Factory Mode" for those of us who rooted and run into a situation where it needs to be taken back to the store.

I'm not exactly sure if this is the stock tar or not.....
BUT if it is, you should be able to just restore your stock nandroid and pull out the recovery file and put that in the pda slot of odin.
Or just put the entire tar in the pda slot... looking for some confirmation on this

I'm just concerned about whether that Device Status field in the About Phone settings is something that is stored underneath the OS and can't be changed once you flash something. This would be an easy indicator that the phone has been messed with and clear void of warranty for normally clueless reps even if you do a return to stock type flash. Before I rooted, it said "Factory Mode“ but now says "Modified“. I haven't touched anything else other than flashing CWM and Superuser.
This is the only reason why I don't want to root and use custom ROMs. It's the possibility of hard bricking my device.
Is there any way of getting a hard bricked device back to factory settings? I heard a Jig might help, but I want to be sure before I go on with rooting.
By hard brick, I mean a brick where the screen doesn't turn on and it might not charge.
Thanks in advance!

So I've been thinking about flashing Paranoid Android 3.6, mostly because of halo and 4.2.2.
What's kept me from root+custom rom for so long is the possibility of a brick, or requiring the warranty and being unable to revert to stock
Had the phone for 6 months now, the longest I've stayed on an official rom on any phone I've had, with the impending release of 4.2.2 in the near future, i'm not sure if now's a good time to root. (Decisions, decisions)
Apart from dropping the phone and have the screen shatter, what could go wrong? Eg. Bricks, sds somehow?
I'm hoping to get a list of things that could go wrong, and the way to get something to go wrong.
Purely so I could avoid just that :good:
Cheers.

There is a best toolkit available for rooting and installing Cwm which u can use and will not create any issue out of it
Since note 2 is quite a old and most of the issue which occurs are solved by some or the other user
I would suggest take a proper EFS backup have a nandroid backup safe somewhere on pc etc after rooting and cwm
And after that enjoy flashing ROMS u like the way u want
Most of the thread has a guide to use / install so u won't have any issue I guess
Just follow the guide and u ll just be fine
All the best

Can I install through kies instead of reverting back to stock and having to deal with the system modified issue?

The most important thing to do before flashing any rom is to create a backup of the EFS partition. I cannot stress it enough how many threads I keep seeing with people crying about losing their imei number and unable to retrieve them. Very important!
Besides that, don't use any rom released before 4.2.1 to minimize the risk of SDS. There's always a risk with rooting and flashing unofficial rom, however, only thing you can do is minimize the risk as much as possible. Good luck.

That is a risk associated with flashing the rom not the recovery. I have never lost my imei from flashing recovery, it usually happens after flashing a custom rom. Fortunately I always have a permanent spot on my PC for my phone EFS backup.

This is a frequent occurrence? In the event that it gets wiped, is restoring the EFS a sure thing, it is there a possibility it won't restore?

Also, if i needed to restore a nandroid backup, would I need to flash a stock kernel? Or just a restore?
Edit- I just read the Mobile Odin thread, and saw "While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety."
So, is mobile odin better than flashing from recovery?
Sorry for the pestering, after 5 years on these forums from my iMate days, i'd be expected to be less of a frightened noob when it comes to a new phone

The only way to brick your phone, truly brick it would be to flash a non t989 rom or kernel, anything else (such as bootloops, stuck at splash screen, ect.) Those are just soft bricks which can be fixed easily, short answer no u can not brick your phone by a bad flash, hence the reason every op tells u to make a backup, TWRP will only flash a valid file, ive gotten multiple failed flash attempts and no never ran into a brick, so dont worry try a new DL and if that doesnt work pm me an ill give u the working version of slim, I have a updated one

HELP!! I think i bricked my AT&T Canadian Note 2 with 16gb rooted with stock rom and stock kernel
SO i was playing dead trigger and wanted to gave tegra 3 optimizations so i downloaded Chainfire 3D from the play store and i installed the drivers and it rebooted my note 2, but it's stuck at the Galaxy Note 2 logo!! I can still use vol up+home+power and vol down+home+power, i tried factory reset in CWM, still stuck, tried flashing new rom (CM, AOKP) still stuck, so now i just want my phone back up and running again. Anyone know how to fix it problem? I don't need any apps or data back or root back, just back up and running again. Oh and charging still shows the battery picture, and i can still turn off my phone.

I tried using CWM recovery but it says error
Why do so many people on xda have such a hard time understanding what "bricked" means.
If you can easily fix it, then it isn't "bricked"
It's bricked if it has to go for jtag
If you read the description for chainfire 3d, it distinctly says "not compatible with ICS/Jellybean" so theres your problem why u have troubles... a factory reset might not be the fix. ODIN may be the only way.

Yeah it's because they can't get the phone to come back on. So that's why they think it's bricked. Plus it's the only word they know and heard of. There's also soft brick, stuck in a loop, etc. But most of the time when the phone stops working correctly, most thinks it's bricked! Lol

For me, even "soft brick" is a stupid term..
A phone is either bricked or not bricked. If it is bricked, there is no fixing it imo (other than jtag)
Odin will fix this, this happened to my S2 while I'm on JB. Just download the latest odin, and the stock rom of your Note 2, probably you can find the rom on sammobile, google will help you out, PM me if you need any assistance. Just relax, it's not broken.
