Is the Galaxy Nexus still worth it on Verizon half a year after launch? I'm looking to get a phone, and yes it has to be Verizon, and this is really the only appealing one. Don't feel like playing the waiting game.

Just read the forums. People complain about anything and everything. There actually are real issues with signal, call quality and software hiccups... although they effect people differently.
Just use your device. Don't go looking for issues.

Completely subjective. Go try them all and do your research then decide. How can I know what you want?
Yes, Verizon along with the other two big carriers as well as US Cellular is getting the S3.
Problems with the Nexus:
1. battery life is terrible. buy the extended battery from VZW, makes a world of difference.
2. Can't transfer data off the phone via usb.

Uh. Yes you can. Plug it in, open Windows Explorer (or Android File Transfer on OSX) and transfer files.

Yes, the Verizon Nexus is worth it. Its easily still the best Verizon phone available right now (unless you want the Razor Maxx's battery life).
Like all current smart phones, it's not perfect, but I've found that the latest 4.0.4 update has cleared up most of my software problems. (Been running a leaked build for about a month now, though I switched to stock yesterday so I could get the official OTA update - which came through a couple hours ago).
Only complaints for me right now are hardware related: so-so camera, screen banding, and status bar burn in on the screen (this may or may not be a hardware failure, as some other phones I've seen don't have the issue, but then others have it MUCH worse as well).
I should also note that I live in Phoenix and have great LTE coverage, so I can't comment on any of the network issues that some people have reported.
Ultimately, I would say pick it up and try it out for a while. If it doesn't work for you take it back and wait for another phone to come out.

I'm having the same dilemma as well, although I have begun leaning heavily to the Gnex simply because after going to the store and checking out the Razr Maxx, it just looked terribly ugly to me.
The sad part is a major deciding factor for me leaning towards the gnex was that I assumed it had an unlocked bootloader (ITS A NEXUS). Now that I know it is not unlocked, I am back on the fence. I know it can be easily unlocked, but that voids the warranty (if they can tell...), do you guys really think VZW would decline a return or exchange based on the bootloader?

Sigh... You realize that having a phone ship with an unlocked bootloader would be a HUGE security problem? Giving full access to the hardware without any user intervention, how is that a good idea?
People need to seriously understand the difference between a locked bootloader (which ALL phones should have by stock) and an encrypted bootloader, which is one that is locked, and not easily unlockable (requires an exploit to unlock).
Just because its locked by default, doesn't mean it can't be unlocked. It literally takes 1 command line prompt: "fastboot oem unlock" to unlock that bootloader and do whatever you want with the device. It can also be easily relocked with just 1 more command prompt as well. Verizon cannot tell you've unlocked once you've locked again, and as long as you're not stupid enough to return a non-stock phone, they will never deny you a warranty claim.

This is the way all Nexus phones have been. You should be grateful Samsung lets you re-lock the bootloaders in case you have any issues. The HTC Nexus One was a permanent unlock.
Gnex is you want Android
iP4 if you want iOS
Those are pretty much the best phones on VZW at the moment.
You shouldn't worry too much about the locked boot loader on the Nexus. It's REALLY easy to unlock/re-lock the phone as needed.
If you're not comfortable doing it manually you can always download a tool to take care of the process for you.
For example: I just used the WugFresh Galaxy Nexus tool to return my phone to it's stock software, with a locked boot loader, so that I could try out the ota 4.0.4 update for a while. As far as anyone else can tell it's always run the stock version of Android and hasn't been fiddled with.
It's also good to remember that unlocking the boot loader on the Nexus doesn't require you to download some b.s. tool like HTC is using, and there's no official record of you playing with your phone.

tell them your having problems with service, continuous dropped calls, get out of your contract. find an area that gets terrible verizon service, tell them your moving there. they will allow you out. they go grab t-mobile
I've had mine for a couple days and love it!! LTE is awesome, AOKP is awesome and the size is the best!!! Def a good phone still to look at.

Apparently the s3 is about to come out on Verizon? Do you think I should still go with the GNex? I absolutely hate the design of the s3, and I'm not thinking the quad cor is gonna stay. 2 GB ram however.

Just check its 12W20 & beyond so you dont get yellow tint or replaced screen.And bootloader unlockability

Yes there is a way to test functions of phone.
From the dialer screen dial *#*#service#*#*
Then use service test. All phone functions should have self tests here

it's true, but i received a jelly bean full of bugs! can't record videos, battery with ridiculous drain, etc etc. And i can't change the rom for other...
Sony doesnt lock the BL forever, that's AT&T thing,...
Sony even has the dev site to request a unlock key but AT&T took away the Fastboot mode from the phone...

i have an lt26i/xperia S.
The reason why i'm complaining it's because in any other phone bought locked to a carrier, is quite easy to unlock it, and with the xperia S there's no way! and the phone is getting old (beggining of 2012)

that's why i'm so mad, in almost all other phones it's possible ...
there are also other phones which cannot be unlocked. for example the newer build version of the atrix/photon.
if you are not satisfied with the phone, sell it and get a new phone without a contract deal. sounds hard...or you wait until Sony has fixed most of the bugs one day.

before the xperia s, i had one xperia arc, with carrier lock, also with a no on the bootloader ... in 10 minuts a developer named alejandrissimo solved the problem ...
but as you said, i'm goong to sell the phone and buy a new one, maybe the oppo find 5, more development friendly

Yeah they found an exploit with the test point that was on the phone and when you perform the unlock with Alejandrissimo he has you ground the test point and they were able to rewrite the bootloader=no. Unfortunately the test points don't exist anymore (at least as we know them) and they also locked down the Sony S1 server that was also used to perform sim unlocks and bootloader=no changes. As far as I know no one has been able to get back in the the S1 server for like a year now
If someone can find an exploit for the S1 server again and get back in there we can probably change bootloader=no for every Xperia. Ion, Go, T, TL, Z, ZL, and any other new carrier lock phone...

The first units out up here have a locked bootloader. I would imagine the replacements do too. There was an engineering firmware from Sprint that you could flash to get root, but I'm not sure what happens after you're on it.. i.e. I don't think you can get off of it (at least easily), no recovery, no custom ROMs, etc..
There are a number of users who returned their W8 Note7 and bought a F or FD model, as the Exynos variant has an unlocked bootloader, recovery, root, etc..

I wish. I also have a W8 Note7. So far I've decided to keep it, although it hasn't been exchanged yet (registered, but coral blue and waiting forever). I may sell it and get a F or FD variant once known good ones are easily available.. or may get something else.. who knows..

Oh, OEM unlock is a feature added in lollipop. As far as I know it's a standard feature and doesn't reflect the actual ability to unlock the bootloader. Disabling it can remove the FRP lock though.. Yes, I do know you need to use that when flashing ROMs, I had a HTC 10, S7 Edge (W8 Exynos model), and many other Androids before, and I rooted every single one of them. This is the first device I haven't, which is why I'm on the fence..

Ditch the snapdragon and go exynos as mentioned....only way to go with a note 7 if you want the usual root, twrp like the note 5.

Guess I've just assumed it was unlocked. Honestly this phone has been a pain in the ass since I got it, was hoping to fix some things up with root and don't really want to go through the hassle of getting an Exynos version. Where would I grab one from anyway?

Can't say about bell....
The store is swiftronics.
I would hold off on buying though until battery gate blows over...they dont have any new stock yet anyway. We are all waiting on them to replace our FD units with updated versions.

Just use the Spring Userdebug root and you will be good to go. Instructions are pretty basic. I have the N930W8 as well. The advantage is that you dont void your warranty or trip knox, but then you are stuck on an unchangablr kernel and cannot flash roms/kernels until someone decides to include the system.img and old kernel in their roms, which would be a lost cause, since maybe 3 people have rooted their canadian note 7's xD
BTW, can anyone help me out with systemui? I flashed the modded systemui that includes rom control, and can no longer use samsungs interaction control, which I absolutely need. Please help me out with possibly a zip I can flash that resets systemui to stock?

You cannot use that on the new firmware for anyone who got the update.
The OP is on a replacement device so he def cannot use it.

I used this on my original Note 7 as well as the replacement.
I got my replacement last friday, the phone was said to be manufactured Sep 6th, but I was definitely able to flash sprints userdebug on my new replacement..
I'm running it now, and its actually doing much better than the older device. Much much snappier and longer lasting.
Then again, you mentioned an update, and I usually avoid such things so I hadnt noticed any update. Could you ellaborate on that please? With some links if you can? ^.^

You must have got the device rooted before it updated....nice one!
The new firmware which gives the fixed devices the green battery icon and bad ones a big fat warning to turn the device in. And in some cases limits the charging to 60% tops.
I have all my update crap turned off so avoided it and some like you got lucky..others the damn phone updated immediately and others it came with the firmware.
You cannot odin the previous firmware either..its blocked. And there is no root for it even on unlocked bootloader devices like my dual sim exynos
Its all over the forums bro, easy to find more info but thats the overview of it.

I'm super thankful I blocked the update services with Package Disabler right away then.. I didnt even intend to do it, but I figured I would just in case. I have to reflash the userdebug again though, theres no way it would auto update right?

It shouldn't especially now that your rooted, im not even rooted but have auto update off and also used package disabler and havent had a hint of an OTA thank god.
I dont like It either but under the circumstances i do understand why they would force an OTA like this.

Just managed to reflash sprint userdebug and root again (on the replacement). I was sketching out hard during the setup, saying to myself over and over "oh my god please dont auto update".
Thanks for all your help! Sucks that the Note 7 is essentially dead now, considering only very little people will have a rooted note 7.

Lol.....just now there is....there was not up until when i went to bed last night. Looks like Dr Ketan found a way around it by not having to flash the new bootloader.

Yes...and you'd do very well to listen to another wise man, the Badger...
But, then again, you'd be surprised how many are/were mistakenly, misguidedly, and peculiarly obsessed with locking the bootloader after it's been unlocked...for seemingly random reasons...and end up bricking their device and begging/pleading for help....
So...I'd say you are a wise man indeed...
