I'm still waiting for the ota here in Wisconsin. Once I get the notification for it, wouldn't it be easiest to relock my phone and then just take the ota? ZvB is capable of being rooted by users that accidentally took the ota right? I'm rooted unlocked and running imperium now. The other question is maybe I'd be best to wait for a jb ROM? Would that b as simple as flashing the zip in twrp? No returning to stock or rerooting/unlocking? Thanks alot

You are probably correct that waiting will be easier. We still don't have a way to unlock it either. You can take the OTA. In the end you will get the same result.
The problem with waiting is.....it takes to long. You don't to control when it happens. You might be at work. You could be in the movie theatre. You could be on a date or worse. What will you do in those moments if the update comes?

So to take the ota, just relock and then download it and let it do its thing?

Yes, you can just flash it. But you must be on a stock. And I mean stock. Not a stock rom. You must be on original stock. The only changes that can be made are root and recovery. But, if you are stock and have twrp, then yes. You can just flash it. When you hit reboot it will ask if you want to keep root.
The guide I posted was for everyone. Everyone includes people who aren't on stock still.

Okay guys, I just wanted to make sure I got this crystal clear before I take the plunge into the dark side.
So in order to root a stock EVO with new OTA update applied, All I have to do is follow Toast's step 1 & 2 to root and nand unlock and then applied Caulkin's new rooted update on dev site? Please help me out, this is my first time rooting anything and I would hate to brick my phone on my first try.. thank you so much in advance
I'm not entirely sure, but can you even root with today's OTA update applied? I know the first OTA update (on release day) you could still root, but I don't know about today's update allowing root or not. I know if you are rooted and apply today's update that it will break root.
Of all the days to decide to root, the day of an update after applying it isn't exactly the best of ideas.
yeah you can root the OTA update taht came out today caulkin did it pretty fast i might say too lol

Ummm, I'm thinking that the OP meant 'hey if I installed the new update today on a stock EVO can I root?' and the answer is NO.
I have a few questions
1. Is it best to wait for a ROM with the OTA built in? or do we flash a zip file not re-doing the ROM?
2. If we flash the zip instead of waiting for a ROM.....will these changes stay permanent? For example, if we flash a new ROM in the future, will it undo the OTA stuff?
Thank you
If and when the Gingerbread update gets pushed out, how will us custom ROMmers be notified? Will we receive notifications asking us to download the update and then have to deny it? Will we have to unroot then upgrade? I wasn't around for the 2.2 update so I am a little curious as to how this all works on the Evo. Feel like such a noob right now but I really don't feel liking bricking my Evo due to an act of stupidity.
Don't have to unroot, it should show there is an update, update and it will take off root and go to stock 2.3, anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
You aren't going to need to do anything, other than NOT take the OTA. The only thing you will need to do is wait from 2-10 hours after the update is out in the wild for the devs to get their hands on it and give us a fully rooted build to flash. It does not take long around here. There is absolutely no need to unroot and take the OTA. Who knows, if you did that you may not even be able to root again. So basically all you're going to need to do for the update is wait for the devs, and then flash a rom as usual. Maybe some new radios or something too, who knows.
I'm more concerned about when they will push the damn update. *Supposedly* it's Q2, but I'd bet if that's true, it will be late Q2.

Sure, lots of people say "wait for a rooted version of the update," but all I want to know is, is it POSSIBLE to safely upgrade even if you are rooted? Would flashing the stock update remove ClockWork recovery?
yes i was rooted before 2.2 and i was having a crazy day, long story short i accepted the OTA not paying attention and it got me a weird reboot then i was unrooted and on 2.2 i had to wait for a root method for it. but i heard of some people having their phone glitch in crazy ways, also that first OTA sprint rolled out had a bug that was bricking some phones

Developers will simply make new roms, and then you can flash the "update" of that rom. it'd be the same way of flashing CM7 nightlies.
Or just make sure you are s-off, take the update, install it. Then install SU from recovery and you are good to go. Thats the whole point of s-off (other than flashing PRI, NV, and Radios of course)
rugedraw said:
If you rooted with Unrevoked and have Unrevoked Forever, then theoretically you should be able to flash the update and still be s-off to flash a rooted rom over the update. You'd have to push the custom recovery back onto the phone, though. However, I wouldn't be the guinea pig for the theory myself. I'd keep 2.2 until a rooted 2.3 rom is available and then flash that. No one knows what will happen if you flash the OTA update as no one has is or knows what's inside of it.
Once it starts being pushed out, it will just be a matter of time before some posts a thread either:
a) crying because the update broke their root.
b) gloating because the update did NOT break their root.
Basically, don't accept it. Play it safe and wait. We've been on 2.2 for well over half a year, so 1 more day isn't going to kill anyone.

To make it simple, the result of accepting the OTA would either:
A- luckily do nothing
B- "Break" your phone and not be able to re-root

You are correct!
Theoretical question... If you're on a custom non-stock ROM (Myn or CM or whatever) and you accept the OTA, what would happen to the ROM? I don't think it would revert you back to the stock ROM because that ROM isn't on your phone anymore. I can't imagine CM would continue to work since it's not Sense. Would a Sense-based ROM (assuming you reinstalled all the Sprint bloatware) continue working with all the customizations even though you don't have root any more? Or does the OTA rewrite the entire ROM? Or would you just screw up your phone unpredictably?
I'm certainly not going to try this myself, but I'm curious as to what would happen.

The OTA update would include the new stock 2.3 rom in it. It would wipe whatever you have on your phone (regardless of whether it is Sense or not) and install the OEM Sprint 2.3-based rom that all will eventually be on all new Evos when HTC ships them out.
I just flashed aokp b28, and 0317 gapps. and when all things were restored..i unlocked my phone and was greeted with this...wat does this mean? does it mean that my phone's IMEI has been sent the OTA? and that if i flash stock 4.0.2, i would get it again? cause this is aokp...and i got it...
IGNORE FIRST ATTACHED PIC
How many threads do we need on this...
You should not accept the update. Its being sent to your phone because its IMEI and footprint match that of what the OTA is looking for. It will not work and will cause problems if you try to install it.
If you flash back to 4.0.2 you'd probably get it pretty quickly again, but that's irrelevant, as you could just flash straight to 4.0.4 if you want and not have to wait for the OTA.

Thanks and sorry for making a new thread
I am unlocked and rooted on my Galaxy Nexus but otherwise stock, no ROM. When the Jelly Bean update came through I thought that even though I was rooted, I'd still be able to take it, but when I tried to, I got errors. So thinking about this, here are my questions.
1) Obviously, I'm not stock because the update is signed. If I wanted to take the update (I'd like to be as close to stock as possible still being rooted) am I correct in that I'd have to relock bootloader and unroot?
2) I tried to look through the development threads to see if there was a stock rooted rom that I could flash through Clockwork, but I didn't see anything that was THAT close to stock. I'm wondering what suggestions people would have for me to get what I'm looking for.
3) If I'm completely off base and I should be able to take that update, I'd like to know if anyone knows why I'm getting errors. I tried flashing the update as a zip through clockwork, but I got the same error (sorry, didn't write down).
I messed around with my OG Droid quite a bit, rooted my Droid Inc and Droid Charge, and after messing around with the crap UI's that OEM's wanted to wrap around android, I just really want that stock experience. All suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance (sorry for the noobishness).
I think its recovery that has to be stock to receive OTA updates. As your trying to flash with CMW you have a custom recovery.
I believe you are manually able to flash the update.

Not correct. Lock state of your bootloader, and even root, have no impact on you being able to apply an OTA update.

So, I'm curious about the new sony 4.4.2 firmware. I'm presently on 4.3(10.4.B.0.569) stock sony, not rooted yet. C6506, Locked bootloader allowed = no
Is there a chance that the update change the status of the bootloader allowed to yes?
Is there good chance that I will be able to root my ZL, in a near futur, if I take the update?
And switch to Existenz present or next rom?
Should I just dont take the update, root, install present existenz rom and patiently wait for existenz rom to switch to 4.4.2?
I'm presently moving house so I probably won't have time to work on the phone before one month.
So what do you guys think ?
Sorry for my english

Bootloader unlock allowed: no. so you definitely cant unlock bootloader.
near Future root. i really doubt. as you can see the development is slow for this phone.
however you can downgrade and root your phone and take OTA and preserve root till 101. but i have no idea about KIT KAT as i didnt get it yet.
Sony stock rom is really good. i used the stock rom without root for a year, since its been a year i unlocked and currently on CM11 latest nightly. just to try something different.
if you are asking question here regarding the update. i would definitely suggest you to update as you wont find better rom than stock for the time being.
So go ahead and update and tell us about it. (still waiting for update notification here)

First, thank you very much for your response :highfive:
Do you mean that it's possible to downgrade after the update if I want to? Via flashtool?

Yes, it is possible to downgrade after the update using flashtool
You will need to have the ftf for the software version you want to go back to for the hardware version you have.

So I took the update, played a little bit with it.
Very fluid, maybe a little bit more than before.
The look of the new drawer is cool, but parameter are one more click away via drawer.
In parameter section, it feel's more sluggish than before.

My battery is totally being eaten up since I got the update. I've had the phone a few weeks. Love it to death but I was literally watching the battery percentage drop as I was checking my mail today. Maybe after a few more hard resets this newest update will settle down.
