Get some memory back without Hard resetting! - Windows Phone 8s by HTC

For heavy users memory is a real problem on the 8S...
But there are some tricks to keep this otherwise beautifully phone going:
Get memory back from your other folder, without hard reset:
There is no option in WP8 itself to reduce the size of the other folder, WP8
will do it automatically after it is getting to full.
But there is an app that first fills up you phone to force WP8 to clean up...
After WP cleand up... you can delete the data the App generated so that you
end up with more memory than bevore!
Give it a try it managed to release 200mb for my 8S:
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/shrink-storage/44672108-f3f8-47df-bd19-3fe94e6c744a
Install Apps and games from your SD card:
Go to www.windowsphone.com and download the app and games you use to your computer. Create an Apps folder on you SD card and copy all the apps and game xap's to it...
After a while you will se a SD-Card option on the first page of your Microsoft Store. You can install games and apps any time from your SD card...
Because WP don't have to download and cache them you will have more space after SD installation than with online installation!
Also you can have a lot of games on you phone and switch them without
need for a wifi connection, just install them from the SD card.
Delete the WP8 standard Photos from your Phone
There is a album called 8 on your phone just delete the 9 photos and the
folder it will save you almost 2mb.. hey it's almost 1 small app!
Delete browser cache files
Delete apps that do a lot of caching and reinstall them
All the apps that cache a lot.. Video and Music streaming apps
Reduce you downloaded emails to 7 days if you don't need them
Delete Apps you don't use which were already on the phone
The HTC app uses a lot of space.. get rid of it if you don't use it
Use Here Navigation from Nokia as your offline navigation
Nokia drive uses the maps you already downloaded for your wp8 maps...
Delete or reduce the maps you use if you don't need them
Delete Voice recognition and other stuff from different languages
It seems Voice recognition can't be uninstalled without hard reset, so be carefull
Update to GDR2 or don't backup your Fotos with SkyDrive because there is an bug which keeps storage increasing
I hope i helped you the get some MB's back for your 8S!

Hi
Thank you very much for your tips But please, can you tell me how to do this:
Delete Voice recognition and other stuff from different languages

I started playing with voice recognition before I realized I was getting short on storage and I installed a few languages to try it out and now I'd like to delete them without having to hard reset...
Thanks!

It seems voice recognition can't be removed without hard reset. Sorry for the confusion.
Voice recognition seems to be very special because also when the phone installs it, it performs
a restart an behaves like updating the OS.

Bluetooth transfer
Make attention on bluetooth transfer! On my HTC 8S, 300mb of video received by bluetooth has moved to SD, but on Other section, there is more 300mb.
Excuse me for my bad english

Here is another tip for gaining another 50/60 MB from the phone.
Be careful what you do cause this may brick your phone.
I am not responsible for any damage you can make on the device.Do it on your own risk.
I don`t know if someone else knows why that "Regulatory" option is present in the OS but i`ve found it useless for me so deleting it you can gain extra 60 MB on the device.
Considering it`s a system app and you can not delete it or uninstall it like the regular apps here`s what you have to do:
1.Go to the settings and then to Date + Time.
2.Turn off "set automatically" (the second option) and then set the year to 100 years later. (ex. 2113)
3.Don't tap on anything just turn off the phone.
4.After turning it on go to the settings menu and tap on "Regulatory"
5.You will be prompted with two options: "Uninstall" and "Buy".
Just tap on uninstall and you are done.
5.Next go back to the Date + Time menu and set the year back to present followed by setting on to automatically again.
That`s it you gain 60 MB more space.
This trick is already done form another member here on the forum but this is specially for our kind of devices with the low system memory like the HTC 8S.
I am not sure if with hard resetting the phone the Regulatory app will be back again.
I will confirm this on my next hard reset of the phone.
Hit thanks if you find this post helpful.

Uninstalling MS Voice Command

Does anyone know how to uninstall this? When i try to do it on the phone or over Activesync I get a warning message that it could not remove all of the program and ultimately the entire program is still installed. It takes up too much room for what it does (and I think there's a battery issue with it as well) Thanks

Try using the Uninstall application of this program: http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/ Once the program is uninstalled, just delete the remaining folders and then run the Quick Clean and that should remove all remnants of the Uninstalled program.
Thanks. It helped to remove mobitv and xmradio which were entirely useless to me and took up a lot of room. However, when I tried to uninstall memmaid it left a few bits behind - there are folders remaining in the program directory... in fact the MobiTv icon still exists in my program directory leading me to beleive that it's just deleting a folder and not removing the program from my reigstry, etc. It's a start though. Thanks again
Re: uninstall
This may be a silly question, but was VC cooked into the rom originally or did you install it yourself? If it was cooked in you will not be able to remove it. (As is true for any cooked in application.)
Best wishes,

Quick question; when using MemMaid, did you use the Quick Clean with all items checked? by default not all are checked.
Dead shortcuts
Dead Registry
Bad uninstall (files)
Bad Uninstall (Registry)
These are just a few items I would make sure are checked..
Thanks for the help guys. It was not part of a cooked rom and after checking the boxes on memmaid and rebooting a few times VC is gone (and 5 megs are free). After uninstalling memmaid (it's 900k - I can't keep that around ) it just left an empty folder called "Handyswitch actions" that I'm just going to manually delete. Thanks for the help. I was this close to deciding between keeping Skyfire and outlook

You can't install MS VC to storage card and have it work correctly unfortunatly.
I've had same issue whilst installing MSVC to storage card and had tp install it to phone. I also had same problem trying to uninstall it. Luckily I wanted to upgrad my ROM which solved the problem
As I've been using my phone I learned there's a new glitch - if I use autocomplete to fill in text or complete an email address, etc it crashes my phone (I think pasting text does too). This didn't happen a day ago so I think there's a connection to the uninstallation of VC. I've reset it 5 times and it's always the same result. The screen becomes nonresponsive, switching to landscape mode takes about 45 seconds and doesn't solve anything and both the onscreen keyboard (Happy Tapping) and the hard keyboard fail to function. If I wait it out I can get the start menu to drop down and get to the Today screen but navigation is still brutally slow there and the email sits. I Use o2plus and it shows apps are running but doesn't state them (it's pOutlook that is frozen). Any ideas? I wish PPC had 'last good state' like Windows... thanks again
I have VC on my memory card and have no problem... Dont know why you have though.

[SOLVED]Market downloads stall at "Starting download..."

Can anybody please help me?
All my market downloads stall at "Starting download..."
Rom: Stock WWE
Kernel: richardtrips OCUV v14
/Erik97
EDIT: I solved it with a factory reset.
Is your card setup OK in your Google account?
yes, but im not buying any apps.
i cant even download free apps.
I'm having the same/similar problem with newly purchased apps... it seems I have to keep aborting downloading and retry a few time before it works... free apps or previously paid ones are fine.
mine doesnt even download free apps!
It happens to me when phone memory drops below 15 MB, check your memory...
Nah, happens to me sometimes, even though I'm using APPS2SD+, so no memory problems. Switching WiFi on and off and restarting the download seems to sort it out eventually, but I'm not sure it does anything that just waiting wouldn't do. Very annoying anyways.

Yeah, I used to have the same problem on my Hero, and what StrongOneX says is true....though hardly a solution, more a workaround I'd say.
Just wondered of you'd changed your google email to gmail recently? i did, and google talk and hence market stopped working. Its a bug google knows about, and has not managed to solve for about 3 weeks now! If this is the case, then change it back to googlemail via settings and under accounts tab.
thank you everybody, I solved i with a factory reset.
This has been happening to me as well today, I can't download anything, even if I use wi-fi.
Is there someone else out there with the same problem? (I don't really wanna do a factory reset...)
had similar probs after reverting from froyo rom to mcr 3.1, tried activating gtalk, reboots, on/off wifi, changing gmail accts etc, eventually had to do a factory reset
For me, it turned out that having the "low memory space" warning blocked any download from the Market.
I had to uninstall a couple of apps to resolve this. Very annoying.
my phone doesn't sign in Gtalk neither
it steel hangs on starting download mood! also my modem shows some data transfer
someone help
So only option is factory reset for this?
I get download failed notification....
(3g or wifi no difference)
PLEASE EDIT FIRST POST! This does **NOT** require factory reset: MISLEADING "solved"

THIS is the correct answer: You don't have to do any factory reset. It's a very simple -- ANNOYING YES -- but consistent easy to remedy issue.
Invariably, you will be getting a warning in notification bar about "Empty Space getting low" .... Well, unlike most warnings that you can ignore until it maybe says "NO MORE SPACE", pretty much from the moment you get that notification, the phone blocks you from further Marketplace downloads as a self-protection mechanism. Annoyingly, it doesn't TELL you that more specifically... You just see the list of apps that you thought were downloading in the background instead just stuck in a queue, as though simply trying to connect to the server to start the download. When in fact they are stalled due to LOW SPACE...
Android should solve this by a better form of NOTIFICATION -- at the point where you click "download" or OK, whatever the final screen-action is after you approve the access the app will have to your phone.
THE REMEDY IS SIMPLE, but annoying: and you can do it many ways:
(1) Easiest way is to click on the "LOW SPACE" notification item itself (after pulling down the notification bar) ... That takes you directly to Android's native Apps Removal Tool -- where the best thing to do is first: Sort by FILE SIZE. Then you will have to sacrifice something you probably don't use anyway, or if you do it's rarely -- like a 2nd music/radio player, or YELP type app, or a second Keyboard app or browser... dump it... try to dump about 5 MB
OR
(2) Use your favorite Apps Removal Tool ... The only thing I would say is, I have found that various Apps Removal Tools don't always gain access to things like FONT PACKS you've installed or weather widget icon-packs that you could dump -- whereas the native tool does.
NOTE: Plan on waiting 30 seconds or so afterwards. It isn't instantaneous like when you clear a PRINT QUEUE on your printer by killing a bunch of files -- and then suddenly the printing resumes. For whatever reason it takes a moment or two -- but from the moment that Notification Icon for "low empty space" disappears from the bar, your downloads in queue will RESUME DOWNLOADING in an instant.
---
And now, I am guessing this will all become a MOOT POINT with apps2SD and Froyo! -- but, I still don't have froyo -- and prob some of you others don't either...
Even with Froyo part of the app stays on the phone after transferring it to SD and that's if you're lucky enough to have apps that support the move to SD option.

Memory leak with install/uninstall apps

Hi all,
I finally got myself a unbranded/sim lock free HTC Desire and the first thing i tried to do was to install some extra apps.
So i install an application called AppManager and it was reporting that the device had 145MB free out of 147MG possible .
Up to this moment everything was okay, and then i started to install some other applications, and since some of them didn't made my happy i just uninstalled them.
This procedure was been done maybe for a half-dozen applications, and at the end i only left the AppManager installed. However now the device reports 101MG free out of 147MG possible. I have restarted the device some times, and this value maintains the same..so i wonder where all the memory went? Is there some sort of bug in the memory management or in the uninstall procedure of applications within HTC Desire / Android 2.1 OS?
If there's any extra info i can provide, feel free to ask for it.
Thanks for your time,
Bruno

Hi adesonic,
I have only the gmail account setup (and this email account it's an empty one) and i didn't used internet so far.
By installing and uninstalling over and over applications the memory keeps droping until i see the low storage warning message. The way to fix it is to do a factory reset, but it seems to me that something is very wrong with the device/os.
Thanks,
Bruno
that's a known issue mate, i am having it too and many others i think.
i dunno if this is the reason but what's the process of uninstallation ???? maybe the .apk file is left somewhere when we download it and still take space after uninstall
I have the EXACT same problem on my HTC Desire and it is driving me nuts. And to make things worse I have trouble finding other people with the same problem.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and perhaps found a solution? Im going crazy having to do a factory reset to clear up memory from apps I have already uninstalled (I have turned down cache for my browser and my emails cache is very small too.)
I'll wipe my desire in a few minutes. I've got only 8mb left now, and I really deleted all the stuff I didn't really need... Thinking about getting a bigger MicroSD card & doing A2SD until HTC leaks sense for 2.2. I'll report back after reinstalling all my apps

Get Estrongs file explorer and prune your download and downloads folders.
I guess the issue is not having the capacity of microsd card shrinking, but the internal memory being shrinked after several installs/uninstalls. It also drives me mad on my Desire.

I assume you were using the Market app to install apps. This has a cache that gets pretty big. I've gotten it up to 10mb before. You can go into Applications and choose the market app and clear cache. I've had this issue and the only way I've sorted it was to get the apps I wanted, tested some others, come to some conclusion what I really wanted and then do a fresh restore and only install the apps I wanted.
Something i did not realized before but after reading this thread, i know realized that after 7 days of using my Desire, i only have 43MB left
And to think i was telling myself i can take my time and test as many application as possible cos i can always uninstall those i don't like. Looks like there is an after effect
Is this problem only on rooted desire or?
if you know if this will be fixed with v2.2?
No it's affecting non rooted too.
I did a Factory Reset a while ago. I then had 41MB free, after reset and installing the same apps again i had about 94MB free. All this after trying out a lot of apps.
Now it´s the same again, So a reset will free a lot of memory.
Does anyone know of an app that will back up my e-mail accounts settings? That was the only part that had to be reconfigured after the reset. WiFi, contacts and app settings are a breeze but the e-mail settings has to be done manually.
yes but factory reset delete all settings..or? isnt this annoying?
Not at all, if you've selected Menu/Settings/Privacy (Iguess, my phone is in Swerdish)
That will back up almost everything.
Not your Own Theme settings however.
i hope that this will be fixed with v2.2. Becouse i want buy this phone, but i will think twice. Problems with memory, vibrating, multitouch, and so on..
-Hell No! (Sorry )
This is an awsome phone, I've had no problems with mine.
Yes there is a shortage of memory, but you'll find that in other phones too and it will be taken care of somewhat in 2.2. The very few shortcomings are out weighted by its stellar performance in other ways. The multitasking in the Desire is seriously good. I often use 3-4 apps simultaneously and it doesnt even lag or slow down. Cardiotrainer, Music and c:geo is working about an hour together everyday and when the phone rings or I get an message/mail I don't have to exit the running apps - try that on an iPhone
My advice - Buy it and do it now.

Sorry i have to ask but when you say setting up WiFi, contacts and apps is a breeze....do you mean restoring from the back up? Now if i would to hard reset, how do i restore my data from the memory card assuming i don't want to sync my contacts & calendar. What about general phone settings?
Well, all WiFi connections I had set up before - they just worked again.
All apps will be wiped, but they will be on your Downloaded page in Market. So its just a matter of installing them again.
All apps that had files and settings on memory card - recognized this and all was back to normal.
I use Google Calendar and that syncs back when setting up your Google account again.
Contacts I sync with Outlook, but if you have them in your Google Gmail account as contacts I suppose they just sync back.
The only thing I really had to do all over was setting up my e-mail accounts. The rest just fell in place.
Only thing I lost was my history in CardioTrainer, because I forgot to "Backup to SD card".
So take a peek in your apps if there is an option to backup to SD card and when the app is installed after the reset you can restore from your card again.

Problem with issues/features of android

Well I got my hands on the most advanced operating system
It is nice but a bit annoying unfortunately. I have some questions about it guys and hope you will be able to help me.
For starters the Gmail app is crashing all the time 'stopped unexpectedly', maybe because I told it not to sync, but come on I can't even open it. I use the exchange and if I tell gmail to sync I just get my emails twice which is annoying.
For some reason the thing decided that I want my facebook contacts in my dialer. Unfortunately I don't. When I linked them to some real people it named them however it wanted without giving me the option to rename my own contacts. And I don't want facebook contacts in all people. So I factory reset it and told it not to sync them, but then I can't associate my actual contacts with facebook. I mean the fracking thing wants to do what it wants and I want it to do what I want .
Can I have more screens on sense - like in winmo sense?
Then I don't have a simple file browser, why , the BT file transfer is not working, or just not available, no mp3 for ringtone or I missed something, my 6 and a half year old crap symbian nokia has both bt and mp3?
I can't seem to make it auto attach to the HSDPA network, don't know why, no such setting
Why does all the software makes folders wherever it wants, all over the sd card, without even bothering to ask my opinion
I installed 3-4 apps including the missing file browser and bt transfer, plus some more basic stuff sat nav and now I'm running out of space, why
Don't get me wrong, android is alright, I didn't wrote here to bash it or something, just to share another thing below
Ever since the dream came out I read what a great os android is, now I get it 3 years later and I find it lacks some basic functionality I had many years ago on my crap symbian. I was with winmo the past 4 years, it has flaws, but it's mail client hasn't crashed once, and I can't even open Gmail app on Google OS. I can't even imagine what was the expirience for the dream owners. The other thing, I am not a programmer, but I have used linux before, and calling this thing linux is like if I call my house a skyscraper.
Anyway if someone has a solution for my problems I will be really grateful guys
Ok I'll kick this off:
Gmail app crashes - Well mine doesn't and never has if you have factory reset and its still doing it then maybe try looking to see if it a problem with using exchange at the same time.
More Screens - The desire has 7 home screens 2 to the left and 2 to the right which can be viewed by swiping left and right, pinching the screen as in a zoom out method or pressing the home button.
No File browser - yeah your right install Astro
No Auto HSDDPA - Not sure about this as mine just does any more info?
Random FOlders - Yeah this is very annoying maybe version 3 will address this
Lack of Space - the phone has limited internal storage and all appds install to it. Version 2.2 is now being rolled out which allows installation to the SD card which will give more room. The Sat nav stuff is huge and will be why you are running out so quick. That along with the carp the network operator has shoved on there so debrand asap.
Its not linux - you're right its based on it though. A full blown linux install would frighten most ppl though so they have installed a nice UI to cover up the complex stuff.
Thanks
The gmail app crashed less (1 of 3 times) if I actually synced mail with it and every time if I sync only contacts
I know about the 7 screens, just wished for more -10 for instance, I've been using smartphones for quite a while
Hsdpa can be on or off, it can't be off and then connect by itself if something needs it.
Its weird but 3 mobile didn't put any crap inside, or at least it is not in the apps part. Actually I had to download the crap by myself as it was skype, which I wanted to have anyway
I am still unsure about rooting it, as it looks like I won't be able to achieve much, alright I'll have a terminal, but I need to use it for something
The device says it has 147MB for software, sat nav 2x11-12MB + crap on sd card, some other minor stuff - file explorer, bt transfer, taskmanager, dictionary with database on sd, goggles haven't tried it yet, flashlight, skype, win messenger, google earth and it's at 75%
hope this helps and thanks again for the advice
Hi Again I am stuck on the gmail issue and unfortunately there are only 7 home screens.
You may try Data On Demand app that may do something like what you need for the data.
I wouldn't bother with rooting as like you say its not really necessary and has few advantages other than backup.
I know Google earth is huge but it does appear like you should only of used around 60 to 70 Meg or 50% from the stuff you list Mind you I think a lot of the system apps like weather etc may use some of that memory but cant be uninstalled but I could be wrong on this.
If you're going to get the best out of this phone you have to give in to google.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah, thanks, in programs there is the data consumption of all apps, surprisingly, the browser has used 7,84MB of max allowed 6MB cache, now I know what's wrong with the space
Do you have any idea about the contacts+facebook issue? For example a .conf I can edit or something else
Btw I knew about these issues in 1.5 (bt,storage, file explorer), but I tought they were fixed over 3 years. I haven't read much about them, except how great android was and now i feel like a kid without icecream
@Mark One - What do you mean by this, if I wanted a device which did what it wanted, I would have bought an istick. Linux has always been doing what I told it even if it lead it to crash. It's just a phone if I don't get along with it I'll just get another one.
Err the facebook issue I dont have cos i dont use it but I do know that if you press phone and press the option on the bottom left to show all people then you can press the menu key which allows the selection of the "View" option where you can set "only show contacts with phone numbers" maybe this will help?
Froyo or version 2.2 of android has just been released which addresses the storage problem but not the others
I found this, it ditches most of the FB contacts, but leaves the ones which have phone numbers entered in their profiles, that is in the dialer only. I'll keep digging on this one.
Alright, I rooted the thing with unrevoked and the hboot 0.83 recovery image, installed froyo open desire sense + 5.xx radio. Unfortunately everything is the same, only skype is not working now. I formated the sdcard but the thing only lets me move a couple of small apps on it. Sat nav doesn't want to be on the sd, is this only me?
My mobile network is blocking sites with xxx content, unfortunately it is blocking some which don't have. I tried to change the user agent of the browser, it didn't work. If anyone has any idea about this
Now I debranded and rooted what do I do next

[Q] fix for CM7 sync accounts?

Have searched and searched, which probably means the answer is no, but has ANYONE at all found a solution to CM7 deleting sync accounts after each reboot? I thought at first it was only doing it to facebook, but it does it to anything except google accounts. LAME! Help please
Move your facebook app back to the phone and it will hold your sync on a reboot.
worked for me, thanks
I struggled with that one a bit myself. I noticed the same thing with GMail app. It may very well be any sync account.

Hi, I've been searching the whole XDA forum for some time and the only topic which seems to really describe my problem is this one, so even if it's an old thread and that my device is an LG Optimus One, I'll post it here.
I also happen on some (but not all) reboot to loose all my accounts (except Google) and contacts and calendars events associated to those accounts, and some preferences (widgets settings are resetted, virtual keyboard is back to default Android keyboard).
In *theory* I don't have apps on SD, but as I use DarkTremor Apps2sd script (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715940) on a CM7 Rom, in *reality* I have some apps on SD. However, they should be seen as internal apps by the system. As such, I don't have control (and even don't know) if an app will be installed on available actual internal memory or on fake internal memory (sd-ext) because the system will report all them as internal apps.
The purpose of DT's A2SD script is to make apps act like normal internal apps. Why then would they still cause system problems if the system thinks they are internal apps? I don't understand.
And finally, how can I then try to at least test if my problem is indeed caused because the apps are on SD?
My Micro-SD card is a 8GB class 10.
Thank you
