Start with the stock rooted MA7 ODIN package. If this is the first time you've ever flashed a ROM, do a lot of reading in the development section. There are YouTube videos available, too.

Hey bud. I got mine on boost mobile too. I was able to flash whatever I wanted. My first flash was SynergyROM SPR GN2. That updates it to MA7. I also rooted with note 2 toolkit. Then I did nandroid backup and you can also back up your imei info just google and there's a bunch of ways out there. Hope this helps. Enjoy your new service!
Im on cricket and I can answer the question you seek. NO u will never loose flash of your phone unless you mess with the settings thru cdma workshop. Other way to completely loose it is odin back to stock or using the whole "mA7 back to stock with count reset" yea that definitely puts you from the start. I know this because it happen to my exs phone. Bt no nothing will happen flash the all in one ljc to ma7 zip by t3 and then your stock deodexed rom. Or just jump right to the custom roms. You will have 3g. Sms. Calls everything like it was before. Ey "life's a risk carnal"
Here you go...for your reading pleasure. If I was just starting out, this is the order I will follow to flash my shiny Note 2 to a custom ROM.
1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959113
2) http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=154 (choose either SPH-L900_MA7_Rooted_Restore.exe or SPH-L900_MA7_Rooted_Nodata.exe)
3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2090160 (my favorite ROM so far)
Thank guys for the replies! ! I will give it a shot!! :banghead:

Ok so the war between me & this damn Sprint Galaxy Nexus continues...
I've been trying to get this update to fully install with no luck...
last night after 6 hours of rumbling the device, flashing wrong files, ending up with Verizon/no sim card/no service then FINALLY getting it fixed and back to stock so I can install the update and I just tried and guess what...
still no luck!!!
this god-forsaken update downloads then turns the device off then the screen with the little android with the blue thing spinning in his belly starts up for about 10 seconds then I get:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
has anyone else gotten the same error when attempting to install the update?
I'm using ClockworkMod 5.8.3.1 and the build is IMM76D.L700FC12
can I download the OTA Update & push it through using the Nexus Toolkit?
any/all help is appreciated!
Bro your in need of some serious help there is a way to flash to stock FD02 which is the latest stock build.... give me a sec to find the how to. Follow that then reflash the radios and then root again.
I'm sure its through Odin so make sure you have a good thick cable not the stock one. Like a blackberry one is one I always suggest.

Once thats done go ahead and unlock the bootloader and all that deal. Root it, then reflash those fixed radios. Then you should be good to go .

Is there a well known way to apply the update on a rooted phone with CWM 5.5.0.4? I'd rather not have to spend the evening figuring out why it failed. I tried it twice and it just says:

Opening update package...
Verifying update package...

Check /data/fota or /cache/fota for the downloaded update. If its not herer in settings> about, press Software Update to try to redownload. Copy it to your external sd.
Ive been told cwm touch will flash the ota for you without stock recovery. Never tried it though. I use Mobile Odin Pro. Or you can flash in stock recovery.
You can get voodoo ota rootkeeper on market and protect root before updating. After the update reboot and restore root through the app and you should be good to go.
You wont lose your data but ymmv witb voodoo.
If you want to do a fresh install and start clean you ca download the full fw from sammobile.com/firmware . Use odin or Mobile Odin for this method. Hope that helps!

I appreciate the effort, I didn't find the downloaded update anywhere, but using KIES when I got home worked and re-rooting was no issue.
My kies doesn't even "support" upgrade on my phone...
Do you have anything modded on your phone? Even just small build.prop mods could cause incompatibilities. Honestly just guessing here cause I dont ever use kies. Luckily anything ive wanted to flash was available other ways.
@all
If anyone gets the ota update notification on your phone and is willing to do a little extra footwork to help others out, consider doing this please...
Before starting the update, make a copy the ota file. I think its either at /data/fota or /cache/fota, cant remember for sure. But upload it to a file host like dev-host.org or mediafire.com so those who are having problems getting it can have an alternative.
Thanks!

This is the Wind Mobile /cache/fota/update.zip that showed up for me yesterday. Paste the next line as a link in your browser, since I can't post external links yet:
d-h.st/dGu
If you want to install it using CWM 5.5.0.4, you will need to turn signature verification off and remove this line from the zip's META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script:
Code:
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "d2can" ||
getprop("ro.build.product") == "d2can");
(It's what I had to do. Unfortunately I've been unable to get CWM to reinstall since then, so no root for me until I can figure out why it's doing that.)
Did you try to use voodoo to protect root before installing the OTA? That way you get root back after the update then flash recovery using the gomanager

Interesting. I am having similar problems with rooting the jellybean OTA leak for VTR. When I flash the LH2 update, the jellybean leak would flash successfully right after provided I don't flash a new recovery.
The moment I flash a custom recovery and root then protect root and then try to flash the jellybean update, it fails almost immediately during the check process.
Is there any way to disable the OTA from checking and just installing right away?
You can flash OTA updates through CWM 6.6.1.2, but I don't think you can use the OTA updater from About phone if you are using a custom recovery. I will verify this method when the official JB update rolls out. Why don't you just download the OTA zips from sammobile?

Ah ha! Turning off "Auto reboot" in Odin and then manually rebooting into recovery mode immediately after flashing CWM allowed me to get a new copy of su installed.
It's back to the stock recovery mode after a reboot, but as getting root re-enabled was my main concern I think I can live with it for the time being.

Before you attempt an Odin + pit recovery have you tried the following:
1 - boot into recovery and do a factory reset
2 - flash the stock image via Odin by itself (please copy and post the results from the status screen) - then repeat step #1
If that doesn't resolve your issue....
It's very rare that a repartition is needed, as I'm not aware of any roms that muck with the partition sizing/data on the i317/i317m .... but depending on what the status screen says it may be worth an attempt. If you visited the link above, you'll see that I've temporarily pulled the files. I have a new files ready and am planning on testing the one for the i317 this weekend. I don't have a i317m so... if you want to test the file (which was pulled correctly from an i317m and is now sized correctly) - send me a PM.

yes using the stock rom atm. as soon as i try to flash a non-stock rom, i it hangs at the boot screen after it retsrats. some older threads suggested re-flashing the phone with a pit file to repartition. I dont know what else to do
Which non-stock rom? After flashing it are you able to get into recovery mode? Does this rom by any chance flash a modem.bin?
If a stock rom loads ok, chances are your pit mapping is OK.

Sounds to me like ur definitely not giving the roms enough time on the boot. Some could take 5-7 minutes for initial boot. The fact that stock works and EVERY OTHER ROM here doesn't... leads me to believe this. Patience is virtue

also, someone at your skill level should not be messing with partitions; you are just asking for a brick..
Not to mention the likely requirement of fully wiping the internal storage of the device...
Arbitrarily changing frameworks back and forth without wiping the file structure first will give you problems on boot...(boot loops)...
Additionally....once the rom is flashed...it may help to immediately go to recovery and wipe the device caches and data again...g

Hey all, I've been in the android game for a long time now, so I'm not new to any of this, but this s3 here has me totally stumped.
It is my cousins (telus i747m), and we had it stock rooted 4.1.1 until yesterday.
I updated it to 4.3 with kies, and then he opted for a custom rom. So I flashed TWRP in Odin, and tried to flash gummy 4.4.2
It failed with a assert fail as well as a status 7. I tried old TWRP, New TWRP, Old CWM, New CWM, many different roms ranging from 4.3 and upwards. Still failing with the stupid status 7.
Kies no longer connects to the phone, so I can't restore through there. I will have to install through Odin and the download is horribly and painfully slow.
So is there any way to get a custom rom flashed? I have searched and no one seems to have an answer. Any help appreciated.
What assert failure were you getting?
I'd start back from scratch so go back to stock, then root and flash latest version of TWRP or CWM. Make sure when you flash a Rom it's for that specific device for example if its for the AT&T it's for the AT&T. Also make sure to do a factory wipe before installing any me roms

Also see THIS post for a more detailed description of the updater-script and bootloader assert.
I've been installing custom ROMs on android devices since the very first DROID and never bricked a phone I couldn't fix until now. I've been using custom ROMs on my l900 without any problems at all until the 4.3 ROMs started coming out. I had a lot of trouble trying to get Synergy with the 4.3 update installed on my phone but eventually got it up and working but without root access. Eventually got it rooted but it hasn't really been working right since then. I switched over to Smoothest ROM most recently and ran into a weird problem where I noticed my preferred browser Dolphin was no longer on my system. Tried downloading it and got an error, tried restoring it from a Titanium backup and got an error. Also tried installing Chrome and that wouldn't work.
At this point the 2.3 update for Smoothest ROM was out and so I copied the installer onto my mSD card, booted into recover, wiped data/system/cache/dalvik cache and installed the ROM. This is where my trouble started because I got an error saying it couldn't access part of the internal storage. So I combed the XDA forms (and thank you all for all your amazing contributions) and tried every suggestion I could find including formatting the internal storage partition and trying to install the Stock_MK4_w_Note3_v1.3-tester- signed-20140208_181306 and nothing is working. I still get I/O errors and my phone is totally bricked so I am hoping someone can read this and help me get my baby back :crying:.

Ideally I'd like to get back to stock MK4 4.3 but what I want most is a working Note 2. I had already switched from MC2 4.1.2 to MK4 4.3 and installed a 4.3 ROM.
Where can I get the Samsung stock 4.3 rom?

Here's a link to the MK4 stock odin tar rom. You could try installing the original tar and see if that works. Hope this helps.

My version of TWRP is 2.6.3.1
according to TWRP the file doesn't have a md5 file.
I'm starting to think I contracted some nasty piece of malware because things seem to keep getting work. Now I'm getting errors saying their isn't a partition table.

Ouch! To fix that you need a new pit for odin. I will see what I can find for you.

Well what's happening is when I try to install any ROM now i get the usual write errors but then I get a few lines that say "Updating partition details..." but that's it. Since I'm not getting a notification that the partition details was successful I'm guessing it means that the their might be something wrong with the partition table.
Also I can't wipe data, cache, and system. I keep getting an error.

Try wiping with cwm or philz and as I said I will look into getting a pit file tp use in odin.
