If you are stock with stock recovery the OTA should work.
What was the error you received?
You posted this on the wrong section. This is for Android development. What where you trying to flash. If you are completely stock it should just be a ota that you click install and it does the update by itself.

MA6 to MB1
Thanks to these forums and QBKing77. I decided to root my phone just a couple days ago.
Before doing so I performed the upgrade to MA6 manually to a completely stock not rooted device. (Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3)
I then with QBKing77's videos rooted with the CWM Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743780
Then This morning I got notified of an OTA update, but it would not work unless I went back to the Stock recovery which I performed.
The OTA update then took place without a hitch. (Well Sort of) Root access was lost. SuperUser still appeared in the App Drawer, but would not work. Root Checker Basic Verified the Root was no longer in place.
NO Pre-Exsisting APPs Or DATA was at all effected. All remains intact.
I re-rooted the same as I had before and all is well.
I know I am a complete Noob with all of this but wanted to share my experience so others noobs or not may benefit.
I observed the following:
1. Stock recovery should be installed for OTA updates.
2. Does Not Matter if Rooted or Not.
3. If Rooted...You will need to re-root.
I can not speak for any custom roms as I was only stock rooted.

Ok I recently rooted my phone so that I can use my wifi tethering but now my phone keep telling me to update the software...
I have LJ7 right now and i have some a few questions
1) is it ok to do the over the air update? If not whats the best way to update my phone so that it will not ask me for the update everytime I look at the phone.
2) do I need to root it again after the update ?
3) do you think wifi tethering TreveT mod will still work after the update?
Thanks

You can flash an updated MB1 rom, check out freezas stock rooted rom in android development
After that you can flash the firmware update (modems etc), also in freezas thread
If you just want to flash the firmware and make the notification go away, then go to /system/build.prop and replace all instances of "LJ7" to "MB1", save and close
then go to settings > applications > google services framework > clear data and clear cache and reboot, then notification should be gone
As for tether, yes it will still work on MB1

1. Yes, it's OK to do an OTA update if you haven't removed any stock apps AND you are on the stock recovery (haven't installed CWM or TWRP)
2. Before updating you should install VOODOO Rootkeeper and use it to backup root. After upgrading you will lose root, but you can quickly recover it with using Rootkeeper. It's free and available on the play store.
3. I don't know.

my phone is rooted so i guess i already have the CWM right?
I'm thinking to just unroot my phone using qbking77 instructions then update everything and root it again...do you think it will work?
There is no reason to completely unroot in order to get the update.
If you already have a custom recovery (cwm or twrp) then you can just go ahead and flash freeza's latest stock, rooted rom from the Android development section.
It literally tattoos like 15 minutes and you're done. No need to unroot, then re-root.

Just got my galaxy s3 today and rooted it. It is currently running Android version 4.0 4 and I noticed there was a system update available. I was wondering if I can update with it being rooted already or would that mess something up completely? I also have MetroPCS and I saw no board for them.

If you have a custom recovery the update will fail. Just put the latest stock custom rom on it and you'll be on the latest and greatest

Like the other poster said, it will fail with a custom recovery. However, if you have the stock recovery still, it will work fine provided that you use OTA Rootkeeper to protect root access. Don't worry about the warning in the app description that the app won't work with Samsung updates over Kies. It doesn't apply since your update will be OTA. Rootkeeper will work just fine.
Putting the ILLA in KILLA since 1985
This is the root i used androidforums.com/metropcs-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/637123-howto-root-automatic-root-sgsiii
Kinda new to the whole rooting thing. I did the exact instructions given, so is it safe to just "update" sorry for all the noob questions, I have to learn somehow
They just told you that bit will not work. You are rooted the update will attempt to load and will fail. You have to manually flash all the updates they are available in the threads. Look for them. Unless someone is kind enough to post the links.

I hate to put it like this, but the above is not true.
Even with a custom recovery, the update can still go through. It's not a 100% chance, but it can happen and has even happened to me while i had CWM installed
Check out my OTA sticky thread (its in general) to see what your options are. If you take it hoping it will fail but instead get updated, you will need to reroot

This is correct, you can still install am ota with a custom recovery... having a custom kernel our modifying system apps is what causes it to fail, not the recovery
SPRINT GS3 FAQ
That may be a very small percentage of possibilities. My wife's S3 was totally stock other than rooted. Nothing else. The OTA failed, at that point I took her to TPR. I've personally had 5 android devices none of which have ever taken ota while rooted. The moment I flash stock via Odin they take the ota instantly.
If he's rooted his best option is Freezas thread. It's so easy to just flash it all in recovery, and it's already rooted just saying. There's no difference in rom, firmware or anything it's the update via flashable.

so if I update ad it does indeed fail, do you mean fail as in bricked or just fail as in not updating?

Fail as in it'll just give an error and won't flash

Correct it will say failed and you just reboot and nothing updates. The you go to Freezas thread download the rom and the baseband and update it yourself.

Exactly, save yourself the trouble, just go to freeza's thread and download your preferred ROM (odex or deodex) then flash via your custom recovery. It's simpler and faster than trying and failing w/OTA...

...my bad, this is why it pays to read the entire thread
not trying to change the subject but is there a forum on this website more relevant to the gs3 on metro? Don't wanna be spamming up useless stuff on the sprint gs3 board.
Well I got it updated to 4.2.1 it says my device has been modified and software updates are not available. Is there currently a root for the metro 4.2.1 s3?
Really 4.2.1? Or 4.1.2? Cause 4.2 doesn't even exist for the Sprint GS3

Ok perfect you root it the same exact way as 4.1.1. That's the only thing across all platforms the S3 roots the same.

Anyone else get an update notification today? I flashed the last one a couple months ago.. I'm on 4.1.2, L710, MB1.
Don't know what it could be, and don't remember how I flashed the last OTA...something like install, boot to loader and fix recovery...it wasn't hard but just can't remember.

That's the MD4 update. Premium suite. There are a number of threads open that cover this topic:
1. MD4 Discussion [OTA Link] [Fixes/Links/Info/Discussion]
2. stock update today??
3. S3 Won't update - Want to go original stock
4. New Update?
Edit:
If you have a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), you won't be able to install this update. CNexus has a good tutorial on what's happening with OTAs. If you want the most updated rooted Rom, Freeza has a stock rooted ROM available on his thread over here. Choose the MD1 Deodex "FULL ROM."
Great thanks. I will check out those threads. I guess since my phone was a month late I didn't dig that far back. I'm not a daily xda reader so I didn't know there was the premium sweet update.

Well I got sick of the update notification so I just clicked install. It booted into CWM and applied the update. When I clicked reboot it asked me to fix recovery and protect root. No problems and now I have the latest update.
I'm on stock/rooted.
I recently heard about the new update to T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 phones, but I can't seem to update it because every time that I try I receive the error message "Your device has been modified. Software u[dates are not available". Every answer that I search for talks about factory resetting the phone. is there anyway to Unroot this phone and upgrade it without having to wipe all of my data? The phone won;t let me transfer any of my apps to my SD card, so it would be a painful process trying to reinstall everything.
When I try to install SuperSu from google play it says " There is no Su binary installed, and SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem!".
I have no idea what I have done and I have no idea how to fix it.
Still need help here, I can't seem to install any updates from the Recovery menu either.
Do you have a custom recovery? Why not just flash a updated stock rom? Or u can always just odin the new update tar

I don't understand half of the stuff that you just said.
I don''t have any recovery and I don't want to lose my data if I flashed my phone to a different rom, which has happened before.
The last time I flashed a phone was back in 2010, and with all of the new methods out there i wouldn't want to mess up my phone and brick it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228881 ull need a custom recovery, easy way would be the root kit exe http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957720

Also in those rules: You are allowed to bump your question once in 24 hours. No one is sitting here waiting to answer your question.
I have stock 4.1.2 and I used the Obdin + CMRecovery + CM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_BusyBox method to root. Everything goes fine with the process, no errors, and I get the super user app in my list of apps. When I go to install Titanium Backup it tells me root access failed...
I have also tried the OneClickSuperUser app and at first it told me that I was already rooted, I proceeded anyways but it got stuck on step 5 displaying waiting on phone...
I'm not sure what else to do. If anyone could please help I will give them my first born.
Thanks.
Lol you too, I did the root thing like 15 times, I was ready to slam the phone on the floor
Haven't looked yet but can we revert back to ICS then root? Don't know if we can downgrade as I don't have this phone. Looking to root my gf's and she is on jb as well.

Did you try installing TWRP with Odin? After you do, you can enter recovery, then reboot system from within recovery reboot options. When you do that, you should get a message asking you if you want to install SuperSU - TWRP will do it for you. After you have rebooted, SuperSU will install and give you instructions to do the rest (i.e. update binary or something).
Hope this helps.
Yep. That worked great. I came from a Moto phone so I had no idea rooting could be so easy! Lol.

This is the root method that worked for me when I rooted my brother's T-mobile GSII. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcMioCHOsm8 and I attached the files you need. It worked fine. The only thing that was hard was actually getting into the stock recovery lol. Also heads up when you flash a 4.2.2 rom you have to also update your cell radio or else you will just have a media player
