I noticed an article on XDA of an app review about Contact Notification. I guess this isn't available for the Nexus 4?
Either way, is there an app that allows custom notification sounds for specific contacts when an email, txt message, etc is received from that respective person or persons? This was one functionality I absolutely loved from owning a Blackberry for years. I knew that when a specific sound played, it was from the boss or respective peers so I could then respond quickly, as opposed to receiving spam messages.
light flow can do that..

I'll check it out! Thanks.

Hey all,
I went back and re-watched the Google/Samsung announcement from October. The video specifically shows Matias as having a text (from the Messages app) from Andy Rubin and Andy's picture shows up there (like how it does for emails).
When I get a text message, I get the little box smiley face icon, and not the person's picture. Has anyone gotten a picture to show up there?
Yes

Yes you have a picture there? Did you have to do anything special? Are you syncing from Google+ or anything?

I am synching with google+, yes, but the contacts who I have pictures for in the messages app are not from google+; they are just normal contacts. I added pictures to the contacts manually.

Hi, I have same problem. When I got SMS I have only "SMS app logo" in notification bar. Can you please advise how to achieve photos there?
I don't have pics showing up either in notification. My contact, Google+, etc all have different pics for the person biti still only see the messaging app icon.

Weird how it is working for jstegeman. I'm getting my contact pics from my Google Contacts syncing. I would hate to have to attach all the pics manually from the phone just to get it to show in the Notifications!
Sorry, all, I just reread this. I'm not getting the picture in my notifications, but in the messaging app itself. I didn't notice the word "Notifications" in the thread title. Apologies for the wild goose chase.

I use The People's Rom, on FC09, and as far as I can tell it uses a slightly themed version of the stock touchwiz message app.
If I receive a group text, I don't know who else, if anyone, the message was sent to and responses from other people are not threaded with the original message.
I've recently seen on a friend's incognito that even its crude messaging app can report all of the recipients of a message and a reply all option is available. This is also the case for the iphone.
Which messaging apps for the Epic, if any, are able to display and reply to multiple recipients of group text messages?

I think gosms has it. Im not sure though

Can someone confirm that the CM7 and cm9 message apps do not display or reply to all text message recipients?

GoSMS has group MMS now. It shows as a group icon, rather than a single contact's picture in the text list.
Go SMS does have this feature but I've found it busted MMS after the first use. Maybe they fixed it since the initial release of it, I haven't used it since.
If you don't have it, you can long press the message and go into details. Then it will at least show you the numbers the message was sent to, but it won't match to any names even if you have them.
Sent from my Samsung Epic using XDA app so no search :-(
Honestly I think this is my most wanted feature on CM. I hate the way android handles group texts just as much as I hate go sms

I think it's rather annoying that I get responses from other people when someone sends out a group text. It's just Iphone users I've found.
When I send out a group text with Handcent and someone responds, it's just to me, not the whole group. It's not that way with the Iphone. When another Iphone users responds to a group text, everyone that got the original message also gets the response.
This "feature" sucks in my opinion but other people may want this functionality.

Yes I would love to have it. Just makes coordinating group projects at school so much easier. I absolutely understand it could be an annoyance to some though

You only notice it with iPhone users because it's Apple's 'way' of handling messages to more than one person. It's supposed to be like a chat room I guess. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but it can make it easier when dealing with a few people who have iPhones.
EDIT: And no, nothing on Android (AOSP, CM7/9, TW, etc) either displays or replies to all people the message was sent to. In fact, the way you'll know it's a 'group message' is because it comes through as MMS, so if you're without data, you won't get it. Just FYI.
Go SMS has the feature and it works really well

Do you use it frequently? The last time I used it (when they first implemented it) it worked for one reply successfully. It then crapped out and borked all MMS until I unchecked the option in the settings. Haven't tried it since. But, if you use it frequently and can still receive picture messages from others, then I might have to re-enable it as it would be nice to have.
I have to admit I went to the dark side for a while and the only thing I miss is imessage. I wish I could find a cross platform app to send all my SMS through that would try to use data connection app first but then drop down and send an SMS if the other person did not have the same app. Anyone know of an app like this? It would need to work between iOS and Android.

Just use Whatsapp. Never fails.
Could what's app replace the native SMS app so that if the receiving party does not have whatsapp it will send a SMS from your phone number?

Well, if the receiving party do not have whatsapp, they won't appear in whatsapp's contact list
Here's a quick list:
Viber
Whatsapp
GoSMS Chat
The closest thing you can get to your concern is probably GoSMS Chat. Though if iOS has GoChat, I can't really tell. Viber has both iOS and Android versions, so you can use that too.
I feel you man, I was always on a Android, then decided to switch to iOS just to check it out, got hooked with iMessage but I just can't live with the closed OS of Apple. So I got a GNex and never looked back
My friends and I just use Google+ Messenger app. Half of my friends have iPhones and other hand Android. We just use G+ to group chat. Works great.

seriously...lol.
For every new app that you want to use, you have to try and tell all your contacts to download the app and use. Not many will do it, i know i didn't lol. Only use WhatsApp and LINE primarily for texting and calls to international numbers.
So, sell us on your app. What does it do that a dozen apps already out there don't?

Does this app work with gv or does the other party have to have the app installed also? If they do, then this app is just junk like viber, etc...

It may be good, but I'm always of the mind that if a native app does the trick without issues then why add apps that can misbehave or maybe cause battery drains. If I'm not happy with an app i look for a replacement but not if it works fine. That's just my preference.

Handcent for me. I have been using it for years. I like the customization by contact. You can have different notifications, fonts, backgrounds, sounds and vibrations for each individual. Very nice to know who texted you with customized notifications. I also like the Oops delay. You can set a lag from when you hit send until it sends.
All these features helps visually, physically and by sound who you are communicating with. Less likely to send the wrong text to the wrong person.

Sadly just using stock because at home I use WIFI calling all the time and stock is the only one that always works, all the time, with wifi calling.
But I do use SMS popup program so I get pop up notifications and a quick reply.

I won't use anything from CM these days. Not after what they did to some developers when they became Cyanogen Inc. They basically stole work of other people and left them out to dry. I used to use nothing but CM now, it's just not for me anymore.
Hangouts
I use hangouts, and love how they integrate SMS and Chats.
I had a question though, is there any way our SMSes can be integrated with Gmail Chats?
i.e. If you chat normally on Hangouts, it shows up in Chat history in my Gmail when I see in the browser.
It will be very convenient to have my SMS show up there as well, can search, copy, paste, archive and backup easily.
Anyone else with same thoughts?
