[Q] How does your message app handle group texts? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use The People's Rom, on FC09, and as far as I can tell it uses a slightly themed version of the stock touchwiz message app.
If I receive a group text, I don't know who else, if anyone, the message was sent to and responses from other people are not threaded with the original message.
I've recently seen on a friend's incognito that even its crude messaging app can report all of the recipients of a message and a reply all option is available. This is also the case for the iphone.
Which messaging apps for the Epic, if any, are able to display and reply to multiple recipients of group text messages?

I think gosms has it. Im not sure though

Can someone confirm that the CM7 and cm9 message apps do not display or reply to all text message recipients?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA

GoSMS has group MMS now. It shows as a group icon, rather than a single contact's picture in the text list.

Go SMS does have this feature but I've found it busted MMS after the first use. Maybe they fixed it since the initial release of it, I haven't used it since.
If you don't have it, you can long press the message and go into details. Then it will at least show you the numbers the message was sent to, but it won't match to any names even if you have them.
Sent from my Samsung Epic using XDA app so no search :-(

Honestly I think this is my most wanted feature on CM. I hate the way android handles group texts just as much as I hate go sms

I think it's rather annoying that I get responses from other people when someone sends out a group text. It's just Iphone users I've found.
When I send out a group text with Handcent and someone responds, it's just to me, not the whole group. It's not that way with the Iphone. When another Iphone users responds to a group text, everyone that got the original message also gets the response.
This "feature" sucks in my opinion but other people may want this functionality.

Yes I would love to have it. Just makes coordinating group projects at school so much easier. I absolutely understand it could be an annoyance to some though
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

You only notice it with iPhone users because it's Apple's 'way' of handling messages to more than one person. It's supposed to be like a chat room I guess. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but it can make it easier when dealing with a few people who have iPhones.
EDIT: And no, nothing on Android (AOSP, CM7/9, TW, etc) either displays or replies to all people the message was sent to. In fact, the way you'll know it's a 'group message' is because it comes through as MMS, so if you're without data, you won't get it. Just FYI.

Go SMS has the feature and it works really well

Do you use it frequently? The last time I used it (when they first implemented it) it worked for one reply successfully. It then crapped out and borked all MMS until I unchecked the option in the settings. Haven't tried it since. But, if you use it frequently and can still receive picture messages from others, then I might have to re-enable it as it would be nice to have.

[REQ] App that reports read sms

Looking for an sms app that can report back to me when a message i sent has been read by the receiver. Need this for work been looking all day and havent found it.
Handcent says its does this but everyone giving feedback on that app are saying horrible things about missing text/not receiving text. I installed this and tried it sending about 30 text and 2 werent received until like 10 minutes later
Gosms - not sure if it does have this capability looked at the details of what this app does and didnt mentioned it did.
smspop up- doesnt do it just gives a delivery report. Which is understandable since this is just to make your sms pop up.
theres another one cant remember the name of it but the recipient has to have the app installed as well and has to be sent from that app.
Anyway to make the stock app do this?
**Mod's Delete if you want or merge but i searched over and over on this site and other sites and did not find the answer. Posted on here instead of general android app because this is the phone i use so im always looking at this thread.
Just use Kik messenger and get all your friends to join. It is live messaging and shows when messages are read. Just a thought, not exactly what you wanted as it doesn't work for SMS. A cool thing is it also tells you if they are typing.
Not sure if Handcent does that or not.

It won't work with normal texts. Kik/all those other apps are able to show when messages are read because they're internet-based.
Only certain carriers allow it. Not sprint .

gonna take a look at that app. does it have issues with not receiving or taking too long to receive a text.
Edit: looked at the feedback and many complaining about not receiving text and many not being able to send messages but I guess ymmv

[Q] SMS/Text Question

Ok so is there any setting I'm missing that will change a SMS that goes over 140 characters to a MMS so the person I'm texting does not receive multiple text.
My wife and I both have SGIII's and when she sends me a long text it breaks it into several text instead of just one long text.
Is there any way to change this?

exuse me but i can't understand you.
could you be more clear?
When you send or receive a text that is longer than 140 characters it is sent or received in multiple messages instead of just one longer message.
Is there a setting that let's you receive messages longer than 140 characters in one text instead of the message being broken into two or three smaller messages?

as far as i know, CDMA phones can only go up to 160 characters per text.
so that option in handcent is only for the GSM phones which can send longer texts than 160.
so unfortunately you cant change that. now i do know that there are some roms that after so many messages (like 3 or 4 sms in one) it converts it to an MMS rather than an SMS, i don't know if the stock sms app does it, but i know that the handcent app has an option to disable it to rather then sending 3 or 4 sms as an MMS it sends all 4 SMS's.
but thats my 2 cents worth.
It can definitely be done. Are you running stock or do you have a custom ROM?

I was thinking it could be done because I've had that built into almost every ROM I ever ran on Verizon and their network is also CDMA. I just switched to Sprint a few weeks ago so did not know if it was a Sprint thing.
I'm running FreeSG3-v0.0.9.1, if there was a write up somewhere I can decompile whatever needs to be changed and make the changes myself.
I haven't ran stock since I first rooted my OG Droid...

iMessenger is a closed Apple messaging system... Apple device to Apple device only. You're out of luck on this one as long as they use that. But a previous post mentioned using GoSMS. if you can get your iPhone buddies to switch to it, then all of you can do group chats. thats your best bet.

Group Messaging (ala iPhone) working!!!

I made a pleasant discovery today. An iPhone friend sent out a group message and when replies were received they were maintained in a group message. If it's a known feature it was not working for me. Something to note. I use Handcent for messaging and when I installed an antivirus app it gave me a message the Handcent had the highest priority for messaging and and to be downgraded for the antivirus to scan sms/mms. I let it lower the priority for Handcent and low and behold, group messaging works. I don't know if this is just a coincidence or fluke but thought I would share it.
I'm also on Freeza's stock rooted odex rom, with stock kernel.

Avast Mobile Security. Also, discovered if I send the group message it's received on iPhone as individual message. So my Galaxy will only keep the messages grouped if initiated by an iPhone user. Oh well, still beats getting everyone's individual replies taking up space in my messaging app.
Well there is something there. And i believe that with a liytle investigation you can check the process of which the iphone sends group messaging and possibly mimic there procedure. Dont know but it would be nice.

I've seen some of the roms implement this but I have hsd scattered messages meaning if onenperson sent a big text in the group chat I would receive message 2of2 before 1of2. I use gosms because at least I get the messages in the right order but as someone recently stated it slows down significantly when everyone texts at once.

No, I mean make a group. You can't use group messaging unless you make groups. Just sending to multiple recipients is not the same. Android group messaging is different then iPhone's.

Kenny - Could you elaborate a bit. If I receive a group message sent from an iPhone to 4 people, you're saying I could reply to all 4 people and keep the conversation going??? Just curious since most of my family uses iPhones...

I cannot verify that. I do know you have the ability to make groups such as family, mothers, fathers, etc to be able to send a message to the whole group at once. I never got an incoming iphone group message. Will have to ask my daughters to help investigate this as against my advice they got iphones thinking that's what the cool kids were doing....kids!

Sprint is CDMA network and has trouble with more than 160 characters. If you're on a custom rom, like AOKP or CM, there generally is an option in sms settings to auto-split.

I use Sprint's stock messaging app and have no trouble sending messages longer than 160 characters, and they split properly on the other end. Do you get an error message or anything when you hit 160? Mine counts down characters to 0/160 and then continues on with 160/160, 159/160, etc.

^^^ This. I also use stock messaging app and never had any issues. I also use the auto-combination feature and when people send me messages longer than 160 characters it combines them back into one message. Maybe it's because she's with a different carrier. Another cool thing is that my sisters EVO is also combining long messages too by default. However you still see the 1/2 - 2/2 on her EVO unlike our Galaxy which does a better job.
Edit: Nope it don't work from ATT iPhones. I just received my cousins text in two..
