I made a pleasant discovery today. An iPhone friend sent out a group message and when replies were received they were maintained in a group message. If it's a known feature it was not working for me. Something to note. I use Handcent for messaging and when I installed an antivirus app it gave me a message the Handcent had the highest priority for messaging and and to be downgraded for the antivirus to scan sms/mms. I let it lower the priority for Handcent and low and behold, group messaging works. I don't know if this is just a coincidence or fluke but thought I would share it.
I'm also on Freeza's stock rooted odex rom, with stock kernel.

Avast Mobile Security. Also, discovered if I send the group message it's received on iPhone as individual message. So my Galaxy will only keep the messages grouped if initiated by an iPhone user. Oh well, still beats getting everyone's individual replies taking up space in my messaging app.
Well there is something there. And i believe that with a liytle investigation you can check the process of which the iphone sends group messaging and possibly mimic there procedure. Dont know but it would be nice.

GoSms has group messaging as well.. and it allows you to start a group SMS with iPhone.. it just slows down when every one messaging at once which is annoying as hell.. I at first thought it was my phone but nope can get into other apps and text in same msging app to another person with no problem.. sucks but it works

quick question. I'm still on Freeza's 4.1.1 fre3 (haven't bothered to upgrade yet) - would a 4.1.2 mms.apk work on 4.1.1?
I'm so n moar and don't have group messaging. It has the option in settings but doesn't work. Am I missing something? I had tpr and the same issue. It will not do group messaging. I've checked the setting on and off and still no luck

You mean send a message with multiple recipients? Yea, and also when my dad or sister sends us a group text its not threaded
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I've seen some of the roms implement this but I have hsd scattered messages meaning if onenperson sent a big text in the group chat I would receive message 2of2 before 1of2. I use gosms because at least I get the messages in the right order but as someone recently stated it slows down significantly when everyone texts at once.

No, I mean make a group. You can't use group messaging unless you make groups. Just sending to multiple recipients is not the same. Android group messaging is different then iPhone's.

When I used gosms it worked ok. Half the messages came as SMS in individual thread the other half were in the group thread and it always locked up and took forever to load. Is there something I am missing?

Kenny - Could you elaborate a bit. If I receive a group message sent from an iPhone to 4 people, you're saying I could reply to all 4 people and keep the conversation going??? Just curious since most of my family uses iPhones...

I cannot verify that. I do know you have the ability to make groups such as family, mothers, fathers, etc to be able to send a message to the whole group at once. I never got an incoming iphone group message. Will have to ask my daughters to help investigate this as against my advice they got iphones thinking that's what the cool kids were doing....kids!

So far as I know there isn't an android answer to this.

iMessenger is a closed Apple messaging system... Apple device to Apple device only. You're out of luck on this one as long as they use that. But a previous post mentioned using GoSMS. if you can get your iPhone buddies to switch to it, then all of you can do group chats. thats your best bet.
My friend just recently switched from an iPhone to a galaxy note 2 and I was wondering if there was a way to get the the verizon version of the messaging app because it threads group conversations. This would have to be without root because he would never root.

I think the app in the playstore called "go sms" does it. Now it doesn't always work. Right now im rooted on a AOSP ROM that has threaded group messaging and it works flawlessly

If you send out a text to more than one person it is considered a group message. As it currently is, you will receive a response from each of the individuals in their own message thread. With threaded group messaging all responses to the original text are kept within that thread. It's a really nice feature to have if you do a lot of group texting.
I've learned that Sense has the ability to, but haven't seen it for us. I also noticed CM10.1 and I read stock AOSP also has it

Alright I'll check that out... and is there a ROM that runs 4.2.2 or earlier that has this capability because some 4.3 ROMs don't yet have some things working?? I looked around and found
NoAOSPmod ROM that has it integrated beautifully(I'm using it as we speak) but i want something more like a touchwiz ROM.
Or is there an MMS. Apk that I can install to a ROM?

Yeah they do need to have a group text capable app like hangouts... There is an app called slide messenger pro that is really cool and customizable it's 1.99 but I like it better than hangouts and it does group message.

Ahhh that makes sense. I tried to group message with my sis and my moms phone and I would get their texts in different threads but they didn't have a group messaging app or phone. Thanks man ..
Ohh I'll look into that app ..
I've tried everything and 4.2.2 and 4.3 have group msg. Or you can try textra. I used to use textra. It's light fast and there are no bloatware. It gets right to the point. Group text works really good in textra.

It may be good, but I'm always of the mind that if a native app does the trick without issues then why add apps that can misbehave or maybe cause battery drains. If I'm not happy with an app i look for a replacement but not if it works fine. That's just my preference.

Handcent for me. I have been using it for years. I like the customization by contact. You can have different notifications, fonts, backgrounds, sounds and vibrations for each individual. Very nice to know who texted you with customized notifications. I also like the Oops delay. You can set a lag from when you hit send until it sends.
All these features helps visually, physically and by sound who you are communicating with. Less likely to send the wrong text to the wrong person.

Sadly just using stock because at home I use WIFI calling all the time and stock is the only one that always works, all the time, with wifi calling.
But I do use SMS popup program so I get pop up notifications and a quick reply.

I won't use anything from CM these days. Not after what they did to some developers when they became Cyanogen Inc. They basically stole work of other people and left them out to dry. I used to use nothing but CM now, it's just not for me anymore.
Hangouts
I use hangouts, and love how they integrate SMS and Chats.
I had a question though, is there any way our SMSes can be integrated with Gmail Chats?
i.e. If you chat normally on Hangouts, it shows up in Chat history in my Gmail when I see in the browser.
It will be very convenient to have my SMS show up there as well, can search, copy, paste, archive and backup easily.
Anyone else with same thoughts?
