Cm10.1 ROM options for global travel... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys. I have a question about the sprint gs3. I have a friend being deployed to Afghanistan and I'm trying to help him get connected while he is over there. He has a evo 4g lte and I was shocked to realize is only a CDMA and lte device.
I know the sg3 has the global radios on board but I'm wondering what the options are for switching radios for global use on other sim cards while running the latest and greatest ROMs.
Any help would be appreciated.

There is no SIM slot in the Sprint variant of the phone. You should have him go to the Sprint store and ask them what phones are available with SIM slots and whether they will unlock it for his use overseas. Other than that, may I suggest a non-contract phone for use while he's deployed, perhaps a rugged one.

Yeah someone definitively needs to post a tutorial i will donate $10 for tutorial.
Head over to usgalaxys3.com. The owner of that site has already posted instructions to flash it to Cricket.
I'm in no way affiliated with that site, just sharing where I saw the instructions.

The radio hardware matters, it has to be compatible with 1900 mhz Sprint PCS band. But the other things like GPU don't matter. lol

Virgin uses Sprint towers so band is the same.
Anyone know how to flash Sprint GS3 to Virgin? Or will Epic Touch method work with GS3?

Bottomline - You cannot use GSM phone on a CDMA network unless it is a global phone and supports both GSM and CDMA as well as the frequencies of the carrier you intend to use.
That is an obvious spam post. Please people, there are no exceptions... you CANNOT take a Sprint or Verizon phone and unlock it to be used on ANY service that is GSM or uses a SIM card. Period. The unlock sites will just take your money. World band phones will already be unlocked for use on European GSM networks most of the time so no unlock code is needed overseas.

You can flash it to another carrier though.
Not if the carrier is GSM or uses a SIM card. There is no possibility. Whatsoever. And unless you know a network level technician on verizon, you are limited to the smaller regional carriers and prepaid services to flash a Sprint phone. And vice versa for a Verizon phone. They will not connect a phone that does not already have its ESN already in its system.

Its common knowledge about gsm and cdma,if you dont know what these are then you have no business flashing carriers.
Sprint phones can be flashed to almost all prepaid carriers, overseas cdma is less common however there are ways out there to even flash cdma phone to their carriers. My father in Ukraine had his Epic 4g flashed to a carrier that uses sim cards,so there are ways even overseas.I think some overseas carriers use both cdma and gsm.

Can you use an AT&T go phone sim in this phone?

Hi guys,
My friend bought an incredible 2 and paid to have it sim unlocked. He put his at&t go phone sim in it and it doesn't recognize the sim in gsm mode nor does it even register in global mode. I did a search on Google and got yes and no answers on whether this is possible. I figure no one would know better than an xda guy, so any help is appreciated.
Phone is also rooted and s-off if that matters/helps on the newest rooted ota.
Thanks in advance!

Technically speaking yes it should work but the phone will only be able to use the edge network due to limitations on the inc2 being built mainly for cdma network. I would try a different carriers SIM card to test. It is possible the unlock didn't work. I have seen a few people on here using the phone with tmobile which is almost the same network.

Dkstunna's cm9 has working gsm 3g if I remember right
So it is just a matter of flashing a rom that will support it? I see that a few roms say they support GSM. I read somewhere that verizon blocked the radio in the phone from getting AT&T signal, is that true and if so would I need to flash a different radio for it to work? Data does not matter, he mainly uses it for talk and text (why he got an incred 2 for just talk and text is beyond me)

Its not blocked, the phone just doesn't pick up the right band or frequency to get gsm 3g on certain networks, all the different type of data and voice use their own frequency range and our phone can't pick up the right band to get it, our radio is not made for it.

I have rooted and have mine s-off. Prior to doing this Verizon gave me the unlock code for GSM as I travel overseas. I am running aeroevan's cm9 on it and recently tried the local GSM providers SIM here in Wyoming (Union Cellular) in the phone. I switched the network to GSM and it picked up nothing at all. I have used this overseas with a Movistar SIM and have had voice and SMS. Some how I wonder if there is something built in that blocks GMS when the phone can receive a CDMA signal from Verizon.

Yes but not always the case. It most be one of these. Google is your friend
The handset is a dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900MHz), quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz), and dual-band HSDPA (900/2100MHz) device

Lets Make it happen, Any model Galaxy3 on any network?

Ok ima try to keep it as short and simple as i can. I have a stock T-999 s3 tweaked to perfection running of Net-10 prepaid with the bring your own sim. Not only that I have it network unlocked so no matter what sim i place in weather its AT&T, t-Mobile, straight talk ect. i have service, each service i can critique to its best functions. Now heres my point. I also have a US Cellular galaxy S3 , rooted, and no matter what i do or try i cannot get this specific model to run a gsm provider via sim card. Im no wiz, but i get the idea, and my idea is to take this phone that is not supposed to operate on gsm carriers and make it operate. A recent example of success doing so was with my Droid Razr Maxx HD, i was able to successfully root the phone but as you all know verizon does not support us gsm carriers within the united states , or even on their network for that matter they block it. however after flashing a different modem, i am currently running t-mobile with great service! So any talk of "its impossible" i dont need, negitivity is not needed. i am fresh to this stuff but it fascinates me. cutting to the chase, what needs to be done to this sgs3 model #SCH-R530U to make it operate and function on a gsm carrier within the United states. Hacking Manipulating and tricking is all welcome that what were all about. Ive tried several things changing to global mode, gsm only,, faking gps positions to outside the u.s. and apn settings among countless hours beyond and im at a loss.. please im open to ideas and suggestions hopefully one day we make every model capable as nevery other
I believe the issue you are facing is because that particular S3 does not contain the necessary GSM radio chip needed to use those networks.
According to this (and its a wiki so it could be wrong):
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III
That S3 does not have any GSM bands for 2G or 3G.
However, once T-Mobile launches its 4G LTE on the AWS band, it should work...assuming the 4G network is both voice & data over LTE AWS.
The RAZR does work cause it does have the necessary 2G/3G GSM radio chip.

Simply put, the Verizon galaxy s3 is the only variant that has both CDMA and GSM bands. So if you wanted to do what you're saying, it would be most possible with the Verizon variant.
But for what you want to do, you'll need a world phone. And I believe the Verizon s3 is a world phone. Just gotta "hack" the GSM bands. Since they aren't active by default. But your T-Mobile att s3 will never work on CDMA. Also not lte will most likely not work on other carriers.

[Q] question regarding tmobile LTE

Hello, i have been reading on tmobile rolling out 4g LTE sometime this year as they have done testing in kansas city and las vegas, and i live in kc. If i had the international version or an unlocked at&t version, would i be able to stick my sim card in and turn the lte on when and if they upgraded to it? Ive heard a few people say that you would be able to, but im asking this site as i know its more reliable. Thank you for your time and consideration!
I believe the international version doesn't have lte support( except for the Korean version) and the at&t version wouldn't have the bands for tmobiles lte but you would b able to pick up their 3g I believe

[Q] Enabling T-mobile LTE on an AT&T Note 2

Have an AT&T i317 unlocked with a T-mobile data sim.
I've done the tweak to enable the 3G/4G bands, a la http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
But now T-mobile added LTE in a few markets. I drove through one and suddenly got no data access. This is with "preferred network mode" set to LTE/WCDMA. If I switch to GSM/WCDMA, all is well (it sticks to the HSUPA and H+). So clearly it thinks it's on LTE but the phone can't access the T-mobile LTE.
I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.1, android 4.2.2, which also makes the model number show GT-N7105 instead of i317.
any tweaks to add the LTE? do i need to dump CM and use a diff ROM? do i need to go back to stock first to do any of this? (Right now, I can no longer dial *#7284#)
Thanks!
I am having a similar issue, I have a sgh-i317 with aws mod and the phone is not picking up t mobile lte even when placed next to a sgh-t889 that is getting it. Lte works with att sim but not working with tmobile sim. Any help would be great. I have tried many roms and modems and reflashing aws mod. Roms inculde jedimaster13/14 jedi x13/14 both att and tmobile versions and clean rom and stock 411 and stock 412
I figured it out see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...2-sgh-i317-t2877487/post55453837#post55453837
Does the AT&T version have LTE? If it doesn't have the capability, but he modem is telling it to access it when it sees it, that might be why it dropped out completely. I'm mostly curious to see if AT&T LTE devices can use t-mobile's LTE network because I want to get an s4 active and I don't want to lose LTE by making that switch.
Try this for me, instead of that model number you have. Change it to the T-Mobile model#. Which is going to have to b done thru the build prop. Then reboot. Then go try and c if you pick up lte.
Because I just flashed a AT&T Rom on a T-Mobile GN2. And I pick up lte just fine with my AT&T SIM in there! And no AWS MOD what so ever. But the MODEM is still TMO, it'll always b TMO. Flash a att modem on a TMO GN2. Brick city.
Let me know what happens just curious!!
Edit: the Rom I flashed was SKY NOTE 9. No modem included!!!

WELL, here's your answer.
Maybe they getting the device at a cheaper price. Which would make someone but it. Instead of spending a lot more to have have the carrier brand you need. FYI
Both the phones are exactly the same. Besides the model# and done bloat. Like I said above, if it's unlocked it'll work, with both carrier's. So why not have that option to switch... and one more thing being able to take the phone internationally, and pop a SIM inside and ya have service. No roaming !!!
Just my 2¢® 2 you're question...

When a t-mobile version is available, I do buy it, but with ATT exclusives, that's not an option. For instance, I want the s4 active for its water resistance. T-mobile will soon offer the xperia Z, but when you compare the features and perormance, the s4 active is better, so for the money i'm willing to spend on a smartphone, i'd rather have the s4 active.. the hardware is capable of t-mobile LTE, but it still has to be configured properly with firmware and software to use the radios correctly. Since radios are some of the hardest pieces of firmware to alter, it's worth doing this investigation / collaborating to find work-arounds.
I didn't get tmobile lte on my at&t note 2 until I flashed the new at&t radio. That's all that had to be done. I'm using Skynote9 too. I did the aws mod again so I could get h+ 4g speed enabled and now is a flawless tmobile phone. Let me know if it works for you.
