[Q] Question about amount of memory on SG3 I747 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, I have the latest stable build of CyanogenMod 10 on my Samsung Galaxy S3 i747 (AT&T) and its specs say it has 2GB of ram, but my phone is saying it only has 1590 MB of ram. Its a weird number so I was just wondering, is it the amount of ram available after what it needs to use to run the OS? Its not really a big deal and I love CM10 but its just something I've been wondering about and can't find anything about it.
Specs:
Galaxy S3 i747
Android 4.2.1
CM10 10.1-20130121
Kernel 3.0.57-cyanogenmod-gb1ea79a
Thanks in advance!

That number is about right. Even under the stock ROM if you look at Running apps (services) the total is around 1500 to 1600 MB. If I remember correctly the rest is reserved for the OS and other things.

Ahh, okay thanks. The phone still runs lightening fast so its all good. Cm10 is still a little buggy but the pros definitely out weigh the few cons.

I was told a good portion of that missing memory is reserved for video memory.

+1 to the graphics chip, some for cache.

[Q to devs and everyone]what is the max RAM amount we can get from galaxy s?

i have started my own and read every topic about why we could not see all the ram as user available (329 instead of 512) .. first i compared galaxy s with tab but it turned out tab has 640 Mb of real memory in total.. but i also have seen it was possible to add more memory about 40 Mb to the user available ram .. and i also learned there is also a part which is not used and called "blackhole" approximitely another 40 Mb..
so i believe it is possible to make some adjustments to improve the weakest (according to me) part of our galaxy s.. would some devs please mind trying this for us and share it?
We don't need the RAM (yet)
There are a lot of developers who try to get more out of our SGS's. For instance Juwe/ GingerReal increases the RAM to around 340MB.
Appearently Google thinks we don't need the full potential RAM and that's why they made it with a default of 300-330MB. Still still most developers agree on XDA that we should be able to acces the other 160MB because it doesn't do anything.
Until then we'll just have to wait.
even 340 Mb instead of 329 makes a difference .. i cant think what would happen with 380 or 400 or maybe even more..
because as far as i understood from what i have read; 128 memory is reserved for some drivers and capturing video is taking most of it.. i am taking a video maybe once in 2 monts.. but i am using my widgets, apps, playing my games everyday.. so if was asked to choose i would love to have that memory reserved for video taking..
edit:typo
First of all, the amount of RAM is NOT related to the ROM....
The kernel makes the difference...
In general the max amount of RAM in Gingerbread is 340MB, cuz if we go over the phone will become unstable and we'll break some functions like 720p recording....
In Froyo we used to reach max of 350MB without issues
just curiosity;
galaxy s2 and galaxy s has the same rams with different amounts.. what would happen if we soldered the 1gb ram to galaxy s? would it recognize it without any software tuning? or would we just kill the phone completely? or would still see 329 ?

Probably yes, i am not a kernel expert, i am only a rom cooker/recognised developer, so my knowledge on kernels is very basic....
Maybe you'd better directly ask to a kernel dev like hardcore, nikademus, chainfire....

i would really want that but i am sure its not as easy as soldering the gps antenna.. i have read about a HTC device getting a memory upgrade to 128Mb from 64 in xda forum.. so technically there is no impossible but i wonder what else need to be done after soldering the ram? software adjustments (kernel maybe?), or any more hardware changes ?

thanks for tip, i will ask them..
i am really feeling bad about this ram issue.. every web page is showing nexus, galaxy s, galaxy tab have 512 Mb of ram.. but the memory dedicated for users is far less than the other 2 phones in galaxy s ... so it bothers me.. is there anyone who returns their phones to samsung and gets the money back?
first i believed somehow it was possible to use most of the ram with some software adjustement but then i realised even quadrant shows the total amount of ram memory is only 384 mb (and there is a part which is not used at all) ..

ram after 4.1

After I updated my phone to 4.1 i'm only showing 1.56GB of ram in the task manager app. Has anyone else had this problem?
I did notice that I lost a large chunk of free ram... 4.0.4, I used to consistently have about 1 gig free, now I stay around 500-600 megs free
I've noticed this with any 4.1 rom with touchwiz and bloatware.
It's much better using a custom 4.1 TW rom (bacon!!) with some bloatware removed.

I sent an email to Samsung just now. Let's see what they say.
Anyway, this is def. NOT natural. If you bring up a terminal console and type "free" you will see it state that your phone only has 1.5 gigs of ram.
I'm wondering of project butter is using 500 megs of ram to do the speedup we're seeing...
Response from Samsung 2012-12-6:
Dear ycavan,
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that the RAM of your phone was reduced after the upgrade made on youe phone. We do apologize for the inconvenience that these issues might have caused you. Thank you for bringing to our attention the issue of your phone model missing. We will forward this information to the appropriate department.
The possible reason why RAM of your phone was reduced after the upgrade made on youe phone is because of the new application that is installed on the phone which is part of the enhancement.

My take-away is that they did, in fact, use the extra 512megs for a new application that is part of the enhancement. My guess is butter.
Its most likely just the system using that RAM, like pretty much every android phone on the planet

Wow. Big difference. I'm seeing the same.
I never thought 2GB would get so low available so quick.
Who cares, really?
I'd rather have my 2Gb completely filled up as it's most likely just cached applications anyway.
If need be, this memory will be released anyway by Android's garbage collector.
On the other hand, history shows us that every new iteration of Android needs more RAM, so that's kinda expected.
My GS1 only has 512Mb which is more than enough if running Android 2.x (Eclair, Froyo & Gingerbread) but rapidly falls short RAM if running ICS.

free memory is waisted memory for some. I disagree when it comes to devices using a battery. Processes use memory and battery life...
I hate to see apps running in background even when I didn't use them since the last reboot. Self running apps grabbing infos about me suck. If Google dont want to stop these behaviors then its time for a new OS.

You got it wrong.
Cached apps in memory do not actually run.
They are just left there so that they can start more quickly the next time you use them.

RAM has to refresh whether it is used or not. The RAM has no idea if a particular bit is used or not.
The last ICS update also lowered the RAM to 1.59GB. I believe it has to do with how much RAM is assigned to the GPU. It is normal.

I only care because of my past experience: the more apps I load, the more memory gets used, and the slower it runs. I tend to use a log of apps. Memory was a struggle on the ole' Captivate.
I want this phone to perform good for a while.

[Q] RAM less than specs

I apologize if this is stupid and everyone already knows this.
Why is the RAM listed under About Tablet less than the specs for the fire? Is there a way to change the situation so more ram is available?
Thank you.
No, the ROM, as well as the stock ROM, take about 100 MB of RAM to get System Apps and Processes working as well as hardware running. With 400 MB its enough to do multi tasking, so unless you have like 50 MB RAM, there is no problem. You can't add more RAM, that's how it is. On AOSP you can get 140 MB of RAM free which is enough to play 3D Games and no lag.

Is that 100 MB being used for running the OS or is it used as a ram disk? If that's what Android uses for running, then what is eating up the other ~250 MB of RAM?
The only way I've managed to get ~150 MB free RAM is to go through settings and manually stop all the extra processes that I don't want running in the first place. The benefits are short lived, though, as they always seem to respawn themselves.
Try different ROMs and wait for new version from Devs

From my understanding, each ROM utilized ROM diffrently, and the RAM always partial taken by ROM to run the OS. Newer kernel version (my case is 3.0.50+) like near future 3.4 may take fewer RAM then the current version, as Hashcode promised. And as you see with USB, SD and HDD, none of them show the correct storage as factory spec. It is always lower
The 1gig is shared between the gpu and cpu, what you see is whats reserved for the cpu.

100 is for Hardware System and the rest ~100 or so is for Keeping the OS running, if you were to take that away you would get a unresponsive Kindle. I have that in Stock ROM I get about 200MB but you have sacrifice some for Heavier

[Q] How much ram should I have after a fresh flash of CM

Hi Guys!
I have a quick question. I just flashed the CM11 and was wondering what free space I should have left? I read that Kit Kat is supposed to run well on devices with less ram but it seems like it takes up more then normal. Should I be worried?

Can't say how much ram you should have. As apps and system processes are loaded into memory, your free ram will sink big time. But, that's how android is supposed to work. Meaning how much free ram should be available is not a question that can really be answered.

Roughly 600-700
The amount stated is when using stock launcher ?
Is the 2GB version sufficient for average day to day use ? (no gaming or heavy storage consuming apps)
Is there any truth in the rumor I've heard that G3 with 32GB has more issues than the 16GB version ?

Using Nova Launcher with a few apps open in the background (Facebook, Chrome, etc) I have about 900MB free, when closed I usually hover on 1.2-1.4GB free. I have a program to clear my RAM every half hour, so it doesn't much matter the amount of RAM I have. But yeah. that's how much I have free, I'd presume you'd have around the same using the stock launcher.

Sorry to jump in but I have a 2GB and am running CyanogenMod 12, stock CyanogenMod kernel, have 38 apps installed, have no RAM Manager app and have, running 3 or 4 apps and Nova also, circa 850 MB spare!
I am super happy with its performance and sometimes I think why would I need a 3GB one when this one performs so well.
Mind you that I am no gamer and perhaps if I was I would then consider it but that is not the case with this users pretensions.
Personally, going back to the OP's question, mate if you are no gamer the 2GB is more than enough.
What do you want to do?
Walk around the mall with 1.5GB of free RAM inside your pocket? ?
Enjoy!
Last two responders say there is plenty of spare RAM but both not using stock ROM. I am not planning to change ROMs so would like to know the free RAM amount with stock.

Exactly.
When i wrote my first post i was not talking about any additional tweaks, custom ROMs/Kernels , i was talking about the "out of the box" experience. LG's skin is heavy (as are most OEM skins). You might be able to multitask between 2-3 apps (without reloading).
If you decide to flash an AOSP ROM, say goodbye to camera quality, and welcome to various bugs and instabilities here and there.
Furthermore, Lollipop is memory hungry, and "system apps" fill up to 1GB in a few days of uptime (it happens on many phones, i used to have this issue on my nexus 5 too).
I own a 3GB/32GB G3, after a reboot, free RAM is somewhere at 1.7/1.8GB , after 2 days it's down to 1GB, and system apps are up by that amount. According to a leaked changelog, The next Lollipop update (due late Feb.) should include "better RAM management". Will it help and solve this issue, no one knows, it's only a leak for now and nothing is confirmed until it officially releases.
Would it help to root the stock rom and disable unwanted bloatware apps to reclaim some RAM amount ?

it would help. Also kicking Google's apps from /system to /data (install from playstore) and greenify some of them should help.
but do you really want to invest in a device where you need all that work done. Also, keep in mind that there is no root method for Lollipop on G3, you have to downgrade to kitkat then flash a custom Lollipop ROM.
No, I'm really not into tweaking the phone and just want stable performance out of the box.
Is the 5.0 stock ROM stable and has no issues at all ?

From my experience with my device stock 5.0 is stable and i haven't had any major problems with it. Would like if the RAM management was a bit better though. Battery life is also great.
On a side note, there is no OS that has no issues at all.
I am aware that most stock roms are not perfect, but read many posts where people were saying the G3 is less stable than G2.
That is why I am being careful.

Doubt it, stock rom is full of bloatware, you're looking at a few hundred mb's free
Is all the bloatware active and running in the background all the time ?
It's the same question like:

Of course, it is better to have 2 camels , they just eat more ...
