Every rom that I've installed has the ability to wake up with the home button, as far as I can temember.
Also, I have the commuter case like you and was very dissatisfied with how hard the rubber is. It does make it hard to press the power and volume buttons. The good news is that the rubber softens over time and makes it easier to press power. I still cant hear or feel the click of the button when I press but its much easier to press after 2 months of use.
I also have the commuter case. I agree that the rubber is too hard but I love the protection. At first I didn't like being able to use the home button to wake the phone, I use it all the time now though.

Having to stretch my finger to the power button at the top of the phone is annoying , was wondering if its possible to wake up phone using any of the buttons above...
Thanks in advance.
I already posted a thread on this. As it's my only real gripe with this phone. However there seems no solution YET. Someone suggested flyscreen but that was a full lockscreen replacement. Not what i wanted.

Couldn't find it anywhere, thanks that's my only problem too ....
Actually there is 3 threads on this now haha. No problem they are all called something different. I think this feature will be a major demand in a custom rom which isn't too far away
Hello Brochachos from all over the world! I was wondering if there was any way to turn off capacitive buttons fully and just use the on-screen soft keys? That would be awesome. Thank you for your insight and help on this fellow xda members! <3 kse91holydiver

I had a mod for the nexus s that disabled the keys, I could adapt it to this phone probably. Using cm9 i'm guessing?
No, actually I'm using AOKP, does that change the difficulty in adapting it?
NVM I looked at your mod and adapted it myself, no flash zip necessary. For anyone else who wants to know you delete the text in /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl and then save changes in a root explorer app.
Is there any trick to turning the lights off on cm9?

Yeah I don't want to completely disable the keys themselves, I just want to turn the annoying, battery-wasting backlight off. The CM9 setting to do so does not work.

I want to know this too.
This was made by T.C.P. But I use it on CM9 Codename and AOKP. Turns off the lights but they still work. Flash in recovery and enjoy.

/system/lib/hw/
Push it there and reboot
Some ICS roms like codename have a "lights.sph-d710.so" file so push the the lights.exynos4.so and delete the d710 one then reboot (if that's the case).

That's why I said make sure you add the lights.exynos4.so after you delete the d710 file and then reboot.
Don't forget to set permissions before your reboot.
Why would you ever want on screen buttons instead. Phone screens are small as is, and youre choosing to use a portion of it to be dedicated to buttons you already have? Not to mention theyre not as responsive as capacitive buttons and theyre bound to get in the way sooo much more. I think its the worst part of ics, and Ill be dissapointed if the s3 ships without capacitive buttons, even if it does make ot look cooler. And the removal of search and menu is downright retarded
The .so file does indeed work. Thanks so much for the workaround.
Also on the general subject I would much prefer fewer buttons on my mobile device. My HP laptop has capacitive buttons and they are the cause of many headaches. Even the menu button on my E4GT sporadically activates on its own from time to time. Google did it right with ICS and the Galaxy Nexus. The keys are there only when you need them and auto-hide when you don't meaning the screen real-estate is not as much of an issue as one might think.

If they dissapear its rare. And that portion of the screen is blacked out anyways. Ive never had an issue with my capacitive buttons.

I am trying to do it because my hardware buttons randomly press themselves making the phone difficult to use. I get where you are coming from though.
I'm searching around trying to fix my phantom search button issue but don't want to flash a different rom or start a new thread... I'm rooted with framaroot (great system, so easy to do), have busy box, root browser- virgin mobile S2 SPH-D710, same as the Epic 4G touch. I found a thread in another forum talking about editing the button to simply no longer have a task, but in regards to the menu button and not the search button which is the one that is giving me the phantom issue. Thread is here:
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...th-ics-jb-phantom-menu-keypress-easy-fix.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203059
Anyone know how to go about deleting the functionality of the search button?
I want to take this approach as it seems the only way short of a new/referb or hunting down a custom rom where the software somehow fixes the issue via programming. I did have virgin send me a referb and it had the same issue lol, so working on fixing it the xda way haha. For those with the same issue and wondering what is causing it, IMO the best explanation I found was from another forum, it seems to be hardware, where a screen replacement or capacitor addition is the fix because some S2s had bad quality control and a magnetic shield was not installed correctly and when the cell antenna is in a low reception area, it increases power and that causes an inductive voltage situation or some other power issue and makes the handset think the menu or search button is pressed. I found some who feel that even though it's a hardware issue, of course the software could be set to prevent the cell antenna from 'juicing up' in low reception areas.
Hi everyone,
I was wondering, with regard to the LT15i, is it possible to assign a different purpose to any of the 3 keys along the bottom?
with the advent of on screen button mods I can still get the 'back' 'home' and 'menu' options on the screen and thought it would be wonderful if I could have on screen buttons and then assign the 3 physical keys to do something else.
maybe assign apps to each one?
If its not possible, and you know why, please try to explain why rather than just saying 'no' as im really interested in trying to learn here rather than just asking random questions
Thanks!

Motion is "ON"
Now what?
Long press the Motion section in settings. Once the Motion setting screen pops up, scroll to the bottom. Make sure Palm Swipe to capture is "On".

I could not get mine to work at all when I first turned it on. I held my had vertically and swiped back and forth with it close to the phone then a couple of times higher and higher and nothing happens.
KB112, I followed ur direction and did have the box checked.
I couldn't even get it to work when promoted to do so after the little tutorial.
Now what?
I really used this feature a lot.
i apologize for the shameless bump but this is driving me crazy
Found the answer and I feel like an idiot but this may help anyone else who has this issue. A guy named tdriscolljr76SIII on a sprint forum said this:
I had this same issue as the instructions do not explain it well. I then went to YouTube and saw a video of how this actually works. Take the side of you hand and smear it left to right or vice versa across the entire device as if it were a light squeegee. It will then make a blur across the screen like a photocopier and save to clip board.
For some reason I thought I didn't need to touch the screen. Don't know how that went wrong for me

I upgraded my phone and gallery app as well as routing and doing a clean wipe on my note 2.My screen capture hasn't worked for the past week.My problem was that when I did the clean wipe, it didn't restart with a "Screenshot" folder. After creating one, swept to capture works perfect again! My 2 cents.

-----EDIT-----
Figured it out, and updating the first post to help other out.
Seems I have found an answer from the s5... Long pressing the app switch butting gets you the menu in any app.
----Original Post----
So, after only a few hours of use i have found a very big issue.
No menu button means some apps are useless.
I cant even reply to topics from the XDA app, and cant change setting from others apps expecting to have a menu button on the phone. What was Samsung thinking?
I may need to return this phone if i cant find a solution. Anyone have any ideas?

The one to the left of the home button.
I don' mean no harm, but there's absolutely NO excuse for a Note 4 owner and someone who went out of their way to become an XDA member, to be so ignorant when it comes to something this simple. I don't even have my Note 4, yet, and I could school you up and down on it. There's dozens of videos online at your disposal, to tell you what features are found on your phone. Just looking at any one of them ... and as already mentioned ... you would have found out that long-pressing the recent apps button activates the menu. It's really quite simple.
Or tap the 3 dots at top right ...

Anyways, Thanks for the tip about the xda app as well.
Hope this thread helps others that are having that WTF moment when they first get the phone... You know, i cant remember but i don't think that first pop up tip says anything about long pressing for a menu. I could be wrong and have just hit ok after reading the title.
Don't sweat the little stuff... I asked a while ago about getting air command to pop up. Once you are used to a device that is very, very close to the device you just bought... well, you may not realize the little changes. In my case the older Note I had you held the button on the s-pen while hovering to bring up the air command menu. On the Note 4 all you have to do is hover then click (not hold). Stumped me for over an hour.. until I posted and asked.
