I've had to stick to TW roms lately since every cm10/aokp rom I've tried sooner or later gets buggy when trying to wake it up and the screen staying black. After research this seems to be a cm10/aokp issue.
Do you guys just tolerate this or do you have a workaround? It's even happened when I got a phone call and yea that sucked not having the screen come on
Sleep of death is usually a kernel problem.
I always use the Cyanogen kernels and haven't seen a sleep of death in months. What's the newest version you've tried?
I have tried Liquid, Carbon, and pretty much all of them out there.
I pretty much use ktoonsez's kernels. I really thought this sleep problem was the rom's fault since when I try to wake the lights at the bottom do come on and I also thought thats what I read.
I guess I could try another kernel for cm10/aokp but really grew found of using Wheatley

I'm now on CM10.1 official, but tried stock, Cataclysm and a couple of other roms and kernel combinations.
I always end up with BSOD (black screen of death) at some point. The screen just turns off and doesn't comes on again, even if it receives a call (it does ring though).
Last BSOD was on today's CM10.1 already. I had to remove the battery.
It's not a usual thing to happen, but it ends up happening sometime.
Don't know if it's my new Mugen 2000 mAh battery, or some program I restore using TitaniumBackup. Never had a BSOD in 4.1 roms.

It is a common issue with custom kernels right now. It is due to a bug in the source. We have to wait for Google to fix it. For the meantime use a stock kernel or anything close to stock like 007 kernel

the same issue with stock kernels too(unrooted and rooted).
btw, its not called bsod, its called sod(sleep oif death)
It's probably not kernel related. Did you turn your animations off in developer settings? Try turning them to .5. Helped me and several others. Running mmuzzy with tiny kernel.

Will try that.
Thanks everyone.
I have the same BSOD/SOD issue... will try the 0.5 animation trick and report back. I would hate to go back to 4.1 roms.
I found new love for my SGN with the 4.2.1 smoothness.
Did it help?
I am experiencing SOD / BSOD on my Nexus 4 + latest CM10.1 nightly from time to time... (stock kernel).
In developer settings there are actually three settings regarding animations - are all to be set to .5?
Best regards,
ww
For me it did, yes.
No more BSOD.
I put them all to x.5
I've been diagnosing this for some time and I feel fairly confident that it is only the animation duration setting that triggers the sod. I have the other two settings set to 0 and duration set to 1 and no sod. But, it will not turn off that pesky crt animation.
who in here looked at logcat/dmesg when that happens?
do you have daydream ON? do you use an adblocker?
i've had one on 4.2.1, WITH AN ADBLOCKER installed. no adblocker, no bsod. full stock (rooted, unrooted, tried them both, doesn't matter), default settings (only enabled usb debugging)
just had another SOD / BSOD: I connected the charger and realized after 15 minutes, that the clock was unchanged (still 15 Min prior) - I tried to open an app and got a timeout. After I switch the screen off and on again I just saw a black screen (a little bit lighter than actually off) - but no homescreen anymore... damned.
Hey all,
I've had this issue with everything but the stock rom. After a certain amount of time the phone either locks up to where I have to pop the battery, or will graphic glitch on the screen for a second and then auto reboot. Happens maybe 2-4 times a day depending on the day.
I've done a full wipe and full factory reset. I've been modding phones for ages and this is the first time I've encountered this issue. Everything else seems to run completely fine.
I'm running resurrection rom, but it's done this on several other roms I've tried. However all roms are AOKP/AOSP based if that's relevant.
If there is anymore information I can offer please don't hesitate to ask. I searched the forums and couldn't seem to find anyone else really talking about this. It can be a giant headache so hopefully I can get it sorted.

If this has just started recently in would say it is indeed apart of the cm base, and related to kernel issue. Since the kernel devs are using cm and their kernel base most ROMs kernels have the same base, which means in a round about way they may react the same way on your device. To me, you said graphic glitch, then reboot. I would bump up your voltage little by little and see if it stops, I also would change govs in the kernel.. I'm assuming it happens on any cm kernels you've tried? Yank555 has an awesome cm kernel I would highly recommend, or even imoseyon always has a solid stable cm kernel as well.
How are you transferring the firmware? The heavy cable with the heavy plug? If so, it might have damaged your device's USB port and is causing intermittent disconnections which are corrupting the data as it is transferred. Try a lightweight cable and make sure it is firmly seated, then don't let it move during the transfer.
If this solves it then maybe look into replacement due to faulty design.
Frank
It is happening on all roms, however the only custom roms I've tried are CM based. I'll take a look at these other kernels and see if that resolves. Thanks for the help and idea's so far guys.
I've been having the same issues. Hellish reboots though. 10+ a day... Keep me posted. Thanks

New to running custom roms on phone, usually I just stick to stock but after a week of running COS I was about ready to return my phone. Found paranoid android, read the thread and got it running on my phone. I have to say it completely changed my opinion on the phone and I am loving the experience so far. 2 things though
1) Proximity sensor not working when in a call, not THAT big of a deal but I didn't know if it had already been reported for this rom yet as I read some of the other roms were experiencing a similar issue.
2) This maybe just me not being able to find stuff but is there a way to keep the notification/status bar from going into auto-hide? Although having full screen is nice, I am so used to seeing the status bar that I would like the option to display it.
Other than those two issues, I am loving this rom, even donated to the dev just because it turned a mediocre/almost bad experience into a positive one.
Running pa_find7-4.4-20140626 with micro mod gapps
Thanks for the help!
On PA, there are multiple settings to change notification and what not. As far as proximity sensor, it may be wise to wipe and reflash. I've installed PA on mine and don't remember having an issue with it at all.
One hint, most these apps automatically turn gesture while screen off. If you carry phone in pocket, it will turn torch on and start music without you ever touching the phone. This goes for most of the roms though!
best of luck

Well ATM its working.. But lately the lag on my device makes it stutter so bad it freezes up then slowly comes back. Then sometimes the screen goes black and my device won't do anything.. The screen doesn't come back on. I have to hold the power button and sometimes volume buttons together to get it to restart to be usable.
I have only experienced this on 5.0.x roms 4.4.4 never did this
Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks

I've never had those issues on any lollipop ROMs (at least not for this device).
Personally I'm not a big fan of CM, have you tried any other ROMs and/or kernels? Have you flashed a custom kernel or adjusted any kernel settings that could be causing this? Are you using any mods (like Xposed)?
I'd suggest trying out some other ROMs (possibly even just rooted stock) and starting out with a clean flash, with no mods/kernel changes initially, and see if you still have the issue.

I'll give that a try.. I haven't done anything to it because upgraded the bootloader to like 4.04 and installed CM12 on it. It ran so good till like a week or so ago and now its just trash. A case with a magnet for sleep mode wouldn't have anything to do with this would it? But first things first, I'll try a simple 5.0.2 rom and see what happens.
Thanks
Hey all!
This is happening to me for 2 months now, I was running official 12.1CM and now official 13CM
I tried to also use some stock based rom but im pretty sure it happened there too.
Whats happening to me is that randomly throughout the day my phone's screen turns black and I cant reboot it by any home button combination, only by getting out the battery.
When this happens the phone just totally freezes and I cant get it to respond or make a sound.
I don't think that the phone dies because sometimes when its freezes I can still see the notification led blinking.
Does anyone know why this might happen? or where can i copy some logs that might help you guys figure it out?
Thanks in advance!
sounds like you have the sleep of death issue? Personally I haven't been on CM roms much on my G3 so I haven't really encountered this issue but on my previous phone I've encountered this a few times on CM.
EDIT: Though it shouldn't happen on stock are you sure it happens on stock as well?
I have this issue as well using the Exodus rom. I never had it while using a stock rom, so I think this is a cyanogenmod issue (Exodus is a CM based rom in 5.1).
I have the exact same issue with my vs985. Seems to happen the most when viewing any sort of video, but I have had it happen at other times as well. Pretty dang annoying, probably 3-4 times a day. Using CM 13.0-20151217-nightly-vs985 but it started when I first flashed CM. Never had the issue on stock rooted rom.
