I am posting here because it seams no one knows why some phones have LTE only options and some do not.
I was wondering if someone can develop this feature somehow if the user is rooted and has there MSL code that doesn't have the LTE only option by Default.
Is this possible via development and if not why?

The only problem with going to LTE only is, on Sprint, LTE only supports data service. So if you went to LTE only you would lose voice service.
I want to lose my voice services. I just want to use my phone as a Data access point.
So do you know if someone can develop this feature?

ah ok, wasnt really clear in your explanation. any of the custom roms i have used i don't ever remember seeing lte only. sorry man wish i could help a little better.
It's possible to have LTE only, yet not many people can develop radios that shut out normal service. Good idea
Though!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Ya what if some one developed a ROM feature to where you can at least disable 3G so the phone could only connect to LTE. This could bypass the possible hardware limitations.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Probably won't work but use efrants return to stock guide and instead of flashing both radios try flashing the LTE radio only and see what that gets you
Bloods thicker than water
I wonder why this is not more popular and why more people are not working on this possibility.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Search in the Play Store for "Network" by Philipp Mangelow. It is actually a shortcut to the phone's built in diagnostics mode. It doesn't work for stock or ROMs with stock kernels, but I have used it to put the phone into LTE-only mode for testing. You will see both GSM and CDMA settings, regardless of which one your phone is. Try them all, sometimes the setting is mislabeled (its a bug with the ROM, not the app).
So in short, even if your ROM doesn't support LTE-only, you have a good chance of this feature with this app.

Okay there was nine options under preferred network tab and all of them did not force LTE. I do not know if I have to reboot or not but if you know anything else that would be great or have any other ideas.
Also there was something about ims registration but I do not know anything about that.

The LTE option only appears on certain ROMs. I forgot which ones, and I can't check right now because I flashed back to stock so I can take my phone to Sprint for repairs (overheating). Try Eclipse, Maddoggin, Carbon, Rasbean, or Jellybro. One of those will have an LTE option I'm sure. What I do is set the LTE option, then below I turn off the radio, and then turn it back on. Oh and sometimes the 4G icon doesn't appear, depending on the ROM, but if you do a speedtest you'll obviously see you're connected to LTE.
Okay I have tried all of them by turning off the radio and turning them back on. Also did not pay attention to names. It still did not work so I guess I will have to try one of those Roms.
Do you know if I can install one of those ROMs with the sprint nexus toolkit? And which ROM would you suggests first.
Also im afraid it might be a hardware issue do you think that is possible? Maybe I got one of the first Sprint 4G LTE Nexuses that you can't split the LTE signal.

ANSWER: Download and flash Eclipse 2.1 ROM (Android 4.1.2) :good:
It has the LTE ONLY option you want. It also has a fantastic array of options and tweaks, and 2-4 times the battery life of a 4.2 ROM or Stock OTA. :highfive:
If the LTE ONLY option doesn't work on the the first try, use the Network app posted above to turn off the radio and back on again. :victory:

Hello,
I was wondering if there is any Jelly Bean roms that support Wifi calling. I need Wifi calling where I work because I get no reception in my office.
Or is there any other roms that is recommended that has Wfi calling?
Thanks for any help.
Why not use Viber? It uses your mobile number as the ID and anyone else using Viber can make a free VOIP call to you.

Aosp ROMs (cm, aokp) currently don't have actual WiFi calling as its something that runs deeper in tw ROMs other than an apk

And therefore is completely different than WiFi calling.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Wi-Fi calling is a TMobile creation thus must be cooked into the rom base by TMobile. Since we dont have a TMobile release for JB for the T989 the answer would be no.
And to reiterate what the poster above me said, wifi calling is more than VOIP.
WiFi Calling / Using WiFi to Surf?
I have no doubt this may be a stupid question, but if I was to use one of the Jelly Bean ROMS and lose wifi calling, does that also mean that I could not connect to the web via wifi?
Thank you in advance for any help. This is a deciding factor for me.
I am using the Galaxy S2 t989 Hercules.

Well, the discussion about Google voice would be a whole new issue. The bottom line is, its different than TMo wifi calling.
As far as Bell getting an update...might want to browse the official jelly-bean sticky for that info.
I am in the same situation, and use wifi calling at home. The problem with GV and other services like that, is that you won't receive calls to your Tmobile number when you don't have signal. You can only call out on the phone, which will use your GV number when you do. Unless you give everyone your GV number, but for me that wasn't very practical, since I've had my T-mo number for over 10 years (ported from my old home phone #).
So, if you have no signal and want to use wifi, people wanting to get a hold of you will have to call your GV number instead of your Tmobile number. As far as taking over your phone, GV has an option to use the GV number for every call, so it sorta does take over. But if you click no, you can manually enable/disable GV when you use it. I think it asks you every time you make a call, which was kinda annoying, as was enabling/disabling GV every time I was connected to wifi.
On top of that, just about every one of those apps I tried other than GV, had poor quality and/or call echo issues. Even the ones with echo cancellation didn't work well in my experience.
So I just went back to t-mo based ROMs that had wifi calling built in, and it's much easier for me.
I'm basically in the same boat. Both of my houses have complete dead spots and very little to 1 bar of reception if ever. I heavily rely on wifi-calling.
So has any JB 4.2/4.3 ROMs popped up yet with Wifi-Calling? Does anyone know of any sort of gains in figuring it out?
Nope....only touchwiz roms.

I am inclined to agree but to a point. In the end it's still code, someone had to create it and inject it into the official tmobile ROMS there for it can be reverse engineered. I would suspect that it's such a tedious task that it hasn't been done. To find the several lines of code the amount of effort wasn't worth the time to invest especially since you could copy and past

Just like everyone else, ive been wrong before, and it would be awesome if I am this time. I just dont think it does a lot of good to speculate either way when the rollout doesnt even start till next year and most of us wont see it till a year after that
It just seems to serve to confuse people and get their hopes up when it probably wont even work with this phone.
Also, a number of people have unlocked the T999 for use on Sprint and Verizon and are not able to get LTE. Just sayin. Im leaving it at that though.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
the nice thing about MSM8960 SOC board is that the radios can be programmed to virtually any current GSM, HSPA or LTE frequency in use in the United States today. the board has a RAT lock on it and not sure if it can be unlocked but all GS3's support any of the three frequency's. now if any one knows how to unlock and program them thats another story.. and just cause the software has a setting doesnt mean tmobile put it in there. and with the gs4 launching in feb-mar im not to sure they would even update the gs3. every one wants lte and if you have to buy a new phone to get it then thats how they make money.
Well I have talk to several people from samsung and tmobile and they said that the s3 is capable of the LTE, but you can't use them till the end of this year and beginning of 2013 .I hope this is true, if you guys don't believed me ask Samsung or T-Mobile and I try 5 times different people and they all told me the same ....

This is probably because they use the same build for all 4 models and it's easier to leave it in since 3 carriers carry it?

Well thats your opinion. THere is no reason to post a thread about an opinion with zero information backing it up. It is quite rude of you actually. DocHoliday has been telling everyone that there is no possible way for our phone to support LTE. And why does he say this? Well because thats his opinion, but he has it backed by very simple to understand hardware specs. LTE is a total separate radio then the standard GSM that our device has. So unless they release a new S3 for T-Mobile, then the S3 will never see LTE. There is no amount of software hacking that will put a hardware component into a device. And every T-Mobile person i have asked confirmed the S3 will NOT support LTE. SO EVERYONE just leave it already.
What really annoys me is how you decided you just had to create a whole separate thread about this which has been discussed hundreds of times. you have an opinion great, post in a thread that already exists.

Was just about to say this. Thanks Teo!
I have had this phone for about 4 or 5 days. When at my house I get 3g and only about 1 or 2 bars. This happened on my Samsung stratosphere too. Could this be a SIM card issue or hardware. I have read about a lot of people replacing this phone and still getting issues with signal. If I do bring my phone in to a Verizon store to get a sim card do I have to revert my phone to stock? I don't know if I should send my phone back or if where I live is just horrible for data. Sorry for so many questions.

Flash another baseband radio and if you are using custom rom with custom kernel then flash stock galaxy nexus's kernel.

Since it is the case for two phones, then maybe the 3G coverage is not good in your place.
Try asking others living around to confirm if they also suffer the same 3G coverage problem. Also try in another place to see if it still shows a weak signal everywhere or only at your place.
I do get better signals in different areas. Even with the 3g and 1 bar my speeds for browsing are decent but I just was wondering if a sim card or replacement would help. Thanks and I will ask some people

4.0.4 radios are old. Try running something a little newer. I'm using FC04/FC05. Although honestly I don't really see a difference. Most of the time it just adjusts the timings between switching in and out of 4G... which I have disabled.
I would also recommend looking at a cellular booster/repeater. I work underground in the bottom floor of an office complex and we don't get signal from any carrier. We paid like $200 for a repeater and now we're good.

Unless Tmo planned for 1.5 years ahead when they launched the Herc, I doubt we have the right hardware. Hopefully it does have support and Tmo did plan for the future but they're keeping it a secret . Because when they build the source for a ROM, they don't take out individual little things for certain devices.

Actually the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-T999) is NOT capable of it period. I have one. But i did read rumors that they may be making another S3, one with the exact same specs, but adding an LTE capable chip. T-Mobile went on the cheap side with their S3 and used the same chip as the ATT and other variants, but cut out the LTE capabilities. Kinda dumb but hey im not the CEO. lol.
But you are right, the Note 2 just needs a firmware update to enable LTE, also, the only other phone capable of T-Mobile LTE is the Windows Phone 8X.

So I have a T-mobile unlocked SM-N900T that I'm currently using in London. I'm on Lycamobile and want to try their 4G network but for some reason my phone just will not connect to LTE. 3G works fine but that's as far as it will go.
I've been able to use 4G in India on the same phone so I know it does work, but for some reason it just wont connect here. I've tried the *#2263# service menu and selecting LTE -> ALL just gives me the no signal / network icon.
Have tried resetting, pulling out the battery and SIM but nothing seems to work.
Has anyone had these issues or any suggestions?
Oh - phone is Unrooted and running the latest KK update.
Any help or advice is graciously accepted. Cheers!
They just might be using a band for LTE that the phone doesn't have/support.

Thanks, shouldn't this phone be able to handle the various bands though?

It handles a bunch of them, but not all. I'd look up the band their service uses for 4G, and see if it's compatible with your phone.

Cheers sir. I'm on the phone with them now and they don't seem to know! What are the usual bands that would normally be used in London though?

Find a phone that they sell and look up spec's and compare.

Thanks Andrew. I'll give that a go. They've called me a few times but keep reading from the same script. Was promised a call back on Sunday, but nothing and its Tuesday already!
They don't offer contracts as they are only PAYG but let me look up specs for O2, as they piggyback their network.

Ok. ..so it would seem that the tmobile phones operate on different lte bands. So I've attempted to flash an international rom on this phone and as the Eagle eyed will note, this was done successfully. I should therefore have an international modem etc now? But I still can't connect to 4G! So does this mean that this is a device (actual hardware) issue or can this be sorted by flashing a modem that allows me to connect to all bands?

Ummm...not trying to be a ****, but why would you repeat a previous post?
Can anyone please advise if flashing a new modem will sort this out for me? I've already tried Knox so may as well give it a try. Suggestions and expert advice please?
