Slightly worried. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Recently I saw that Google wallet worked with ma7 so of course I tried it out. It worked of course but then I saw that you could brick the phone if trying to flash with a data wipe.... I saw this warning and saw how to prevent bricking by reseting Google wallet. Now for my question... Is there any way of knowing if I preformed this procedure correctly? Like checking system files to see if the security encoding is still there or something of that nature.

Don't worry. 2 things:
1 You can't brick your phone by doing anything wrong with wallet or nfc or the secure element. What happens is sometimes the secure element bricks. Just the secure element. The rest of the phone is fine. It just breaks wallet and secure nfc tags. (Regular nfc tags even still work)
2 No one knows what causes or prevents the secure element from bricking yet. It doesn't happen to most people no matter how much they flash roms andbfactory reset. And it can happen and has happened to anyone no matter what special voodoo dances they do even thougb they did everything "right", even when they didn't even do anything at all but go to sleep and it was broken in the morning without touching it. The advice about clearing wallet settings before flashing roms, at least on this phone, is no better than lighting black candles and waving a dead chicken over the phone.
So, don't worry. Enjoy your phone.

Ok good. I'm not new to flashing but seeing that post concerned me. Thank you for the help.

I agree.... I used wallet for a few days, then up updated to a new stock rom and lost it. Went into recovery, cleared everything and still no go. Re-installed, no go. Reinstalled old back-up from titanium (with data) and bam... worked. Went to sleep and woke up... force closed. Haven't seen any errors about the secure element, but the app just won't stop force closing. It's not a feature I'm really worried about using so I just installed it, but I'd love to figure out what is going on so I could have it if I want to just show off or something... lol

Several very weird heavy bugs (wifi, Bluetooth, calling networks)

Hey guys,
A year after replacing my Desire with an S2, I wanted to set up the old girl again, giving it to a friend of mine as her first smartphone. Well, now, all of a sudden I have several issues.
First of all: it worked absolutely fine before, up and including the day I turned it off for the last time. Back then, I took out the battery, SIM- and SD card and stored it in its box in my desk. It's rooted (no idea how I did it, hell, t'was over a year ago. I do suspect superoneclick though) and was running 2.2 until last night (more on that later).
Put it together, turned it on, sure thing: battery almost dead, so I plugged it in while checking it out. Turned on wifi, set up market so I could install some apps & updates. Well, I was in the middle of downloading some updates, when it told me there's some minor update for 2.2. I had no SD in, which was mandatory for the update, so I decided to turn it off and put in a card (while the app updates where still coming in). Well here's where it all went downhill. After reboot:
- No more wifi ("error", wifi-symbol turnes greyed-out green)
- No more Bluetooth (just won't turn on, no notification whatsoever)
- Calling one of my other phones resulted in the screen turning off, with no way of getting it back on (although the phone kept working fine, left a message on my answering machine with dead screen)
- mobile networks was activated, yet would not show in notification bar/actually connect.
Out of desperation, I then installed the official HTC 2.3.3 Rom, which - hey presto - got rid of the calling screen and mobile networks bugs.
I researched online, read a lot, and I just don't know what's going on. Bluetooth and wifi errors seem to be connected, but there's two kind of threads on that online (and here): People who run custom Roms and have that problem (I am on stock Rom, with no modification other than root) , and people who just had wifi magically turn on again after two weeks. I don't even understand how it can go from totally fine to being this busted. Was it rebooting while updating? All it updated was apps like Flash & Google streetview, after all.
But honestly, without wifi this is as good as a brick to me. I can't figure out what's wrong. I thought it was a hardware issue, because pretty much all communication was shot, but the major update to 2.3.3 sorted out two of the four issues. Well, I really need wifi. If Bluetooth is shot, I can live with that.
Is there anybody who can tell me what's busted and point me towards the next step? I'm absolutely out of ideas and can't seem to find anything that applies on Google and/or xda.
Thanks a bunch for ANY help & suggestion!

And now we have random reboots, without anything non-stock running on the phone and the device being asleep.
The hell?
Oh, of course I did hard and soft resets. Forgot to mention that.

I think it is your best shot to flash custom recovery such as 4ext and to wipe everything (you can flash it via app so no fastboot required, and it is probably best recovery). By everything, I mean every single partition including sdcard. Then try to install some other rom, for example oxygen and then test the phone. If you need instructions just say.
First of all, thanks for the quick reply!
Yeah, I was thinking about flashing cyanogenmod at one point, but all these bugs put doing that at the end of the to-do list.
Regarding instructions, I'm a bit intimidated about formating the whole thing, simply because I've never used anything like 4ext before. So if you could point me to a good tutorial...

Ok, battery is apparently totally dead, so I have to wait till I can borrow one from a friend.
A question though. You mentioned "format everything". I assume this is, what CWM lists as "format boot/system/data/cache/sdcard/sd-ext"? All of that? Including boot? Just making sure here.
Thanks a bunch!
Well, finally got to ordering a new battery. No change. Phone won't start up, no charge light (although the battery, just like the last one, gets warm).
Guess I'm looking at a major hardware failure and thus a brick

Screen turning on and off by itself

My daughters att gs3 screen keeps turning on and off all the time all by itself. its all pure stock, NO root, stock rom still.
Data block on her line.
She doesnt have much installed in it and i dont want to reset it. is there anything i can install that will tell me what is causing it?
I know there is a better battery stats app. Not sure if it needs root? Imunsure it will help as its a bit confusing to read thru all the readings
Strangely mines did this for a day and it killed my battery. Hasn't happened since then though. Glad I wasn't going crazy. Mines is also stock no root or anything.

This is happening on my phone too, and when the screen turns on by itself it won't time out, have to manually lock it. Thought it was something to do with smart stay but mine is disabled. I flashed a custom rom yesterday and noticed it still happening. Carriers hardware support thinks it is a hardware issue and want me to rma my phone.

I think your only option is reseting the phone to make sure the phone doesnt have hardware issues. Try a fresh stock install from odin.

I747m screen problem...please help!

Ive searched everywhere and can't seem to find anyone with a solution. Ive found a post with the same problem but no solution.
So yesterday my s3 started having problems waking up. Meaning when I lock it usually you bring up the lock screen by pressing the power button or home button. Problem is when I press either one, screen doesnt come on. The buttons do. If I tap the screen I can hear the ripple effect but the screen doesnt light up. I have to keep locking and unlocking till it finally works. Averege of about 6 tries. When I get a call most of the time the screen doesnt come on either. I can still answer since I know where the slider is. When I do turn it on everything works perfect. No flickering or any other issues. When it boots it works perfect...never fails. Just when I lock it.
I tried restoring already, thinking its a software issue...still does it. What piece of hardware could cause this? I'm stumped. Please any advice would be great.
I'm not rooted and running 4.1.1 oem rogers software.

My guess is that you have something draining all your RAM or being hard on your CPU. When you restored, did you factory reset?
You might have to backup your stuff, factory reset. Test it, if it still does it, bring it up with Rogers for a replacement. If it doesn't, reinstall your stuff until you find the culprit.
You could troubleshoot it also by uninstalling the latest apps you installed.

Like I said...Already did a factory reset. Meaning All apps were gone. Started fresh. Even without going through the first setup (setting up google account etc etc) if I lock the phone its hard to wakeup.
Phone is out of warranty so no go there....
I'm just not understanding what is causing it. I know the screen is fine...buttons are fine...everything points at a software problem. I found a post from a while back where someone was having the same problem....no solution was posted though. I even took the phone apart last night thinking a bad connection or something...disconnected the screen and reconnected it...didn't do anything.
If the screen was going bad wouldn't I have issues all the time? Once I wakeup the phone it works perfect...no flickering or anything. When it boots (which I've done like 30 times between today and yesterday) the screen has come on every single time perfectly fine. Everything tells me it's software related...but after doing a factory reset and running original firmware it seems as though it must be a hardware issue...but which component.
I know the phone wakes up when I press the buttons...I can see the menu and back buttons light up...and if I tap the screen the ripple sound is there...just the screen doesn't wake up....till I try a few more times....very frustrating.
Thanks Again for trying...if anyone has any ideas....greatly appreciated. I'll try and find original Rogers firmware and install with odin...see if that works....

Sounds indeed like software issue. I'm not so sure what would cause it on stock rogers though.
Either way, you can find the stock ROM on sammobile.com or on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822308
You'll need Odin to flash it. (It doesn't trigger the flash counter)

I downloaded the newest firmware. 4.1.2 official rogers. Problem persists. Must be a hardware issue. Thing is what could cause this? Is it the screen...is it the gpu? I imagine if its gpu the phone is only good for parts as I imagine its part of the motherboard. Oh well...might be getting the s4 sooner then planned.

If you're down for a little test, you could try with a custom ROM.
Use the link I gave you and flash pre-rooted Rogers' ROM. From there, install TWRP (or cwm) using goomanager (from the Play Store) and flash a custom ROM as per their instructions (Don't forget the Gapps).
Before anything though, make a backup
Never know, might save you some time on that S4.

Thanks. I might try it. Dont think I have too much to lose at this point. I always try and keep my phones nice so that when I get a new one I can sell the old one for good money to help offset the cost. This really messes with that system as the phone isn't worth much now...just bought an extended battery too...was planning to keep it for at least another 6 months.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
So just a quick update. For no apparent reason the phone started working fine again. It now turns on and off just fine. I'm not going to mess around with it anymore. That's really bizzare. I'll give it a couple days and will report back if it continuous to work fine or if the problem comes back. Thanks for the input.

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 Restarting itself?

I've had my Note 2 for a couple weeks and all the sudden it restarts itself sometimes everytime I put it down. It's annoying. What could be the problem to this?

This is just a theory… but give it a shot.
Every time you put it down, sounds like something has come lose inside of it. Has it been dropped at all since you bought it?
Either way, try this, for starters:
I would suspect that your battery might be a little loose. Fold a small little shred of paper up, and wedge it between the “butt end” of the battery (this opposite side of where the connector pins are) and the device. This will effectively push the battery into the pins a little more, and possible keep it from coming loose.
Also, put a small folded piece of paper directly between the battery and the back cover of the device.
The idea here is to keep the battery from moving around. This will rule out the possibility of it coming loose, and resetting.
Also, take your micro SD card out if you have one.
Are you using any custom ROMs or kernels?
Good luck, I’ll keep an eye on this thread.
Well not every time, sometimes, sometimes when I lock the phone it restarts. Yes I have dropped it couple times, and no I'm not rooTed or running custom roms or kernels. It seems it restarts by itself when My phone automatically updates the apps cause when it turns back on it shows a while bunch of notifications of my apps behind updated

K so for now turn off automatic updating and see if the problem goes away.
Also, why are you not rooted? I would recommend doing this. There is no reason not to be at least rooted.
Also, go into your settings>application manager and wipe data on the following system apps...
Google play store
Google play services
Downloads
Then reboot the device.

Well I don't want to be rooted, until the new Jelly Bean comes out. I get some glitches on my phone, like I don't get notifcations from the XDA app anymore and other apps like I wanted them too.

[Q] Problem since root

I finally rooted it yesterday and it now is very unresponsive at times. It will get to the point where it's frozen for about 30 seconds before it does anything. I flushed the caches and did a reset, same thing. So I flashed Jedi ROM on it. It's a little better but still has moments where ti freezes for a time. Is there a fix for this?
Rooting does absolutely nothing to the performance of the device. Its comparable to giving yourself admin rights on a windows computer. No performance change just extra features. Might want to check any apps that you installed after rooting
I did not install anything after root.
It works smooth as silk with the stylus. Possible sensitivity adjustment?
Maybe the sdcard needs to be reformatted?

ROOT will not brake the phone or cause lag. it changes nothing internally except rights to your phone. no tweaks or files deleted. I can see it being something with the screen since you say the pen works great and using your finger I assume it micro stutters. but even the freezing for 30 sec does not sound screen related. I would wipe and format data, and then try another Rom. I used jedi from the first build all they up to 15 and it ran like a champ. its something you are doing, or have not undone yet.
I would suggest clearing caches. Its got nothing to do with rooting, but neither does rooting have to do with lag.
It sounds like an app was restored with data.

no apps were restored either. When I flashed the new ROM I cleared every cache I could see listed and wiped it clean. All I can think of is the old stuff on the sdcard is causing issues so tomorrow I will reformat it and reset again.
Well then, the only thing I can think of is you flashed an incorrect kernel. What exactly did you flash?
Used the root tool from http://galaxynote2root.com. Odin and cwm6-root-note2.tar.
It still had the bad lag and freezing after I un-rooted it and restored the original ROM.
I have since flashed Jedi, didn't like it and now am on NOTEorious Prime.
What I have noticed is that the lag and freezing go away when I am connected to a wireless network. Maybe it screwed up my modem?
And have you verified the APN settings as being correct ?
Or they may simply be mixed up by default..
It may be set on ATT LTE.....instead of ATT PHONE for example...
Both will work...but one will drop the network speed by about 70%...
Just a thought....g
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using XDA Premium HD app
Perhaps a factory reset from within recovery --- to make all settings default. By now there's a lot of stuff floating around in there.
Why would the original root change the APN settings.
I have factory reset several times. Even with the factory image applied fresh, it still freezes. The weird thing is, it responds just fine to the stylus.
I am at the point where I restore the stock ROM again and take it to ATT to see if they will swap it out.
Thanks for the help, keep the ideas coming..
Flashing a custom rom or recovery or kernel voids your warranty. Please don't tell us about plans to return the phone to at&t. The phone worked as expected before you began flashing.
It's not the radio or wireless either. It works perfect with the stylus but seems like it doesn't detect my finger to operate normally. Does Samsung have a tool to reset the display sensitivity?
There is a dial code for the touch screen. I don't know it, but I've found those codes by googling 'android secret note 2 dialer codes' or something like that.
Looks like I have it fixed.. It's working right since I followed the instructions here http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/39423/galaxy-note-10-1-does-not-recognize-finger-touch
I had installed swiftkey so I removed that and tried swype beta and it's all good now.
I restored everything back to stock and it is still having problems. The screen is unusable with my finger, I have to use the S Pen for everything.
Would reloading the stock ROM with kies be different than using Odin? Does Samsung put some key piece of code in the areas that get changed with rooting?
I am at a loss..

On the test screen, I have to tap screen many times until it finally registers. Then I drag my finger around for about 30 seconds before it starts picking up and filling in the boxes. It will finally let me fill in all the boxes and say it passes but it takes a lot of effort.

Yeah it's not suppose to be that difficult honestly. Something is defiantly wrong!!
Me personally if you bought the phone from an AT&T store! I'd reborn it for a replacement! And if it's not used from someone off the street. Then I'll put it back to fully stock, reset flash counter. Then return and replace at one of there local service centers. Especially if it's giving that much problems as it sounds to be doing. Seems as if the screen has some hardware issues inside...
