Hi All,
I have had my GSM GNEX for almost a month now and have already suffered from the weird bug of loosing signal for no reason after flashing any 4.0.3+ AOSP ROM ( I have a thread dedicated to this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487239 ) and I have to say that after using it for a while now, the performance is NOT what I was expecting.
Apps take WAY longer to load on my GNEX then they do on my SGSII both on H Data and on WIFI. Apps include Facebook, XDA Premium, etc...
Scrolling within these same (or any other) apps is very laggy and choppy compared to my SGSII and just general response of the apps is quite laggy compared to the same apps on my SGSII and again this is using both H Data or WIFI.
Has anyone else noticed this at all? If you think it may be ROM based then please see my signature for info.
Does this / Could this have anything to do with the "Force 2G rendering" option in the settings menu? I have not had it turned on since I got my GNEX...
Thanks...
I think you're experiencing the same compare/contrast that I am vs the SGSII. I think it comes down to the gpu (potential cpu as well) influence. My first impressions are that I'll get lag + choppiness when multitasking +/- what those tasks might be.
Also, widgets in the app drawer, forget about it, various kernels and ROMs and drawer lag is typically there with widgets in the drawer for me, at least from a "cold start".
That said, I'm much happier with my GN that I am with my I9100 despite the apparent hw advantages of the I9100.

Thanks for the reply... I don't have any widgets in my drawer nor do I really have many apps running simultaneously as I'm a bit OCD when it comes to closing apps that I am not using. I have turned on the "Force 2G rendering" option and it SEEMS to have made a SLIGHT difference (at least in my mind... lol).
Also... have you (or anyone) also noticed that the colours / screen on the GNEX just don't "POP" like they do on the SGSII? My colours (compared to my SGSII) just seem very "blah". Could this be due to the fact that the SGSII is SAMOLED + and the GNEX is only SAMOLED? Would it really make THAT much of a difference? Does the option on the SGSII for Standard, Dynamic and Movie really make that much of a difference?
I dont know could be causing this, but mine seems smooth like always. Maybe the SGS2 is just that much better? I dont use 2d rendering either as for me that makes thing laggy and choppy.
I'm using Leankernel 2.2 now and smoothness is great; it's posted in the CDMA dev forum, but is compatible with GSM as well.

That's the other thing about MY GNEX though. As I said... I had the weird bug with my device after flashing any AOSP 4.0.3+ ROM where I would randomly just lose signal ALL TOGETHER making the phone pretty much useless and the ONLY thing that I found that fixed the issue was using the FuGuMod Kernel so I am scared to try any other kernels.
Take a look at the link I posted in my first post for more info. Others have also experienced this bug(?).
Re: signal drop.
I haven't experienced it yet, although I only purchased the phone on Sunday, it was 4.0.3 20 minutes after buying however.

Mine was flashed to 4.0.3 too almost as quickly and the strange thing is that on Stock 4.0.1 AND on ARHD 4.0.2 ROMS the signal would not drop with the stock OR ROM included Kernels but as soon as I flashed to 4.0.3 the signal would drop like every 5 minutes and the only thing that fixed it was using the FuGuMod Kernel. I am using the UGKL1 radio as well since I am here in Canada and yes... I have tried like ALL the other radios and so far the UGKL1 seems to be the best.

I have to say that kernel is not responsible for signal loss it is your modem . You should also understand that flashing a rom can't change your modem, only if u flash it manually . So I advice you to visit modem collection topic and try several , the efficiency depends on mobile network you use , so I can't name the best for you. As for me UGKK7 works better than others .

Speaking about choppiness and lag ... I tried almost all kernels and roms and my verdict for performance hungry : use MoDaCo + Franco kernel 13 .1 or AOKP with the kernel mentioned above . You will be very impressed . But pay attention 13.1 version of kernel not the latest cuz this one is rock stable and very very smooth like nothing else

I know it sounds silly that a kernel seemed to fix the signal drop issue as I thought it was weird as well but if you look at my thread (link is in my first post) you will see that it is not ONLY me who has fixed this issue by using the FuGuMod Kernel. There are about 10 others who have posted the same success and some who have posted that OTHER Kernel/Radio/ROM combos have fixed their issues as well when NOTHING ELSE had worked.
In your case, I would go to the Samsung website, and download the stock firmware, and stick with that, just root it, and flash recovery (if it get's erased)
Then check if your problem maintains, if it does, relock bootloader, and send it back to Samsung (warranty) if not, then it's the ROM and/or kernel you had installed with the AOKP ROM...

I have a nandroid backup of my stock ROM rooted and with CWM and like I said... I do not lose connection while on stock ROM which for me is 4.0.1
I only started losing signal when I flashed ANY aosp 4.0.3+ ROMs until I flashed the FuGuMod Kernel which seems to have fixed the signal loss issue so unfortunately...
Sending it to Samsung for warranty wont do any good cause on stock there is no issue and if I send it back while on a custom ROM they will void my warranty so I'm kinda hooped either way...
I'm new to using a rooted device and installing custom ROMS, and I love it!
I've loaded the latest Blackout ICS version 3.0.0, and am really impressed by how well it works. I immediately noticed that battery life is better than anything I've used previously, always different versions of Gingerbread. So that's a big improvement straight away. As others have highlighted, it's a bit laggy at times, but I overclocked the CPU and it runs much more smoothly. Even just 1.2 GHZ produced a noticeable improvement, and I'm now on just under 1.5 GHz, which I gather is a safe setting. I was worried about this affecting battery life, but if it has it's barely noticeable. I suppose it only runs at the fastest speed when it needs to.
The only problem with the ROM is the auto-brightness, which jumps up and down even in fixed light conditions. Not sure if the developers pick these threads up, but that is really the only issue I've found.
As the DHD seems to be the only device not to be getting an official port of ICS, I'd definitely recommend giving this ROM a try.
With all these other devices getting updates, is it likely that more fully working ICS ports for the DHD will be on the horizon?

You should also try AOSPX and Nik Project X. The first one is stock ICS and the second one is ICS with Sense 4.0. I tried both of em and they work flawlessly on my DHD.
Haven't tried Blackout yet because I saw in the thread that there were still quite a few issues to be solved.

I like the look of Nik Project X, though the final post on the forum raises an issue with not being able to get HSDPA data speed. I'll keep tabs on that forum and maybe give it a try.

Hmm, haven't really paid attention to that (I 'm mostly on WIFI). I 'll do a speedtest when I get the chance.
Edit: Did a quick test and I 'm getting 3,6Mb down / 1,6Mb up (inside a server room right now so not the best connection). Seems quite normal for my network (7,2Mb is max speed I can get from my provider). Of course the max HSDPA speed is alot higher but that 's something I cannot test.
Hi,
I've just installed, and recovered my apps, as i've wiped battery calibration i cannot talk about it, but OC is excellent. Even in default frequency the desktop turns without any lags, but as you mentionned, sometime there are some lags (typing on keyboard for instance) but i guess it's linked to the OC profile changing , try in performance instead of on demand, this should solve that.
Regarding the brightness i agree , it seems it change on "i don't know which parameter" from bright to low brightness.. so i've installed Bright day app to set the brightness along the day at low value and i've set on the main desktop the brightness widget to up from system parameters to push it up when i need, then bright day will recover the setting after a while..

So after few days of testing here are my feelings :
Takeing account of deamon set to 1,2Ghz, i can still reach 1d and half near 2days without charging , with a light use :
Allways connected to network though HSDPA (as i take train it often check the network to change the connected cell)
Playing 20-30min 3times a days to Pirates of carabean (3D game multiplayer so connecting to the network)
Surfing a bit
no music
no video
With an harder use i reached 1d wake up to sleep:
still same network condition
playing double time at least (1 to 1,5h 3times a days)
Surfing more (1h)
no music an no video
using battery eater apps (windguru) a bit
to resume my feeling on battery is excelent, i've noticed a light improvement on idle battery drop, a bit accelerated over time (due certainly to used app remaining processes.
Let's go now to the issue i've noticed :
-Back tactil button doesn't work on phone screen while it works everywhere else
-Using smoth rosie to supersmooth show a light display trouble when reducing the app drawer windows (doubling the reducing animation)
-Light keyboard trouble doubling the A letter some time (like if the touchscreen has been typed twice when its not the case)
-blackout tweak shortcut from top task bar doesn't linked (need to go through the app drawer to access it)
-Folder creation missing from widget/app shortcut addition screen (or i didn't found it) , i use the moving app on another icon to create it (i don't know if it's the ICS new way of creating folder on desktop)
The plus i've found (don't know if it's an ICS feature) : create a folder in the lower task bar : can jump from 4 shortcut to full app contained in your phone accessible from the locked screen : I loved that !
The overall impression is really great and for an old phone that "doesn't give a good experience of ICS" following HTC, i feel this ROM fullfill my expectation from ICS on my Desire HD !
Many thanks to the Blackout team !

Btw, testing further again, i've found the sms issue (from my point of view it was linked to transferring sms not to content,) I'll give a try to the 3.1 to chek this out
I confirm the keyboard double "a" in certain text box, particularly in sms typing or web address typing
Lags linked to overclocking

Yes. Some can't send at all. Some have data drop in and out while sending and some have no issues. Seems weird to me since the hardware is supposed to be the same for the most part. I think apn and radio combo has the most to do with it.

Love this ROM...
This ROM would be my daily driver if the Wifi hot-spot worked. Has anyone found a work-around or fix? Wifi Tether didn't work either btw. I know it's WIP by the devs but they said it wasn't a major priority for them (Boooooo lol) Fingers crossed for v3.2
As noticed recently in the official thread, i've also noticed the magical battery jumps, i first guessed it was linked to the battery calibration wipe i've done before to flash the Blackout3.0 rom, but i can sometime still see this trouble also.
It happen even phone is in use but every time inbetween 30 and 5 percent of battery left. it goes down to low then readjust it to an higher value without any reason.
The phenomen come back lately less often, but maybe devs can check this out. I'm running on a SFR Desire HD recognized as an incredible S on the 3.0 rom.

I finally rooted my desire Z a couple of weeks ago after deciding I've had enough of the poor performance and Sense always having to reload after I exited an app.
So I installed AudacityB5 rom and at first it was looking good, good performance, pretty snappy! ALOT better than my old stock htc sense.
But now after having installed alot of the apps I used to have plus a few new ones(aorund 34 total) i'm noticing a drop in performance, not so fast and snappy all the time and the launcher have had to reload a couple of times...
So I have contemplated if I should just downgrade to GB to see if that helps or is there something I can do to improve performance on my current setup? (cause I really like the look and feel of android 4.0)
EDIT: I searched a bit before this and I've been reading about v6 supercharger and multitasking mods and whatnots... can anyone explain to me what this is all about?

But I am experiencing an annoying fault, and I'm not sure if its the mimicry rom or a fault with ICS itself. But I can't download or receive mms even though apn settings are ok. Now I can't even send mms... Any help as to what might be wrong?

Yeah read all those threads, nothing helps, does jellybean experience the same problems? I'm gonna try a sense rom and a JB rom and if none of those helps its back to cm7 I guess...

Have used flinnys jellybean build now, and at first it was the same problem there, unable to send mms, but then i just chose "reset to default" or something like that and anfter that it has worked.
Are these settings stored in the sim card or does the phone download them from some place or what? Because the apn settings are basically the same as what is on my providers (OneCall) website except for the apn names which is the same as the network name, "networknorway"

Yeah, I've been using build 20 since friday now, it does seem faster than build 19, still some lag from time to time but then again it's an old phone so
I'm in a similar situation to the OP, wondering what settings and modifications I can enable/install to get some extra performance out of my Desire Z. I'm running Flinny's Andromadus CM10.1 Build 19 (updated from a fresh install of 17 w/ full wipe, unsure whether that matters) and while it's certainly useable I often find my phone slowing to a crawl or throwing me "Application Not Responding" notices, sometimes even locking up to the point where the screen is stuck on black and battery removal is required. So far the only settings I've changed are the CPU min/max, currently set to 368 and 1200 respectively using the Interactive governor.
I've read through multiple threads with multiple suggestions and conflicting opinions, so I wanted to check here before doing anything drastic. So far I've seen suggested:
• Increasing VM Heap size (not sure if this would positively or negatively impact performance considering the Z's limited RAM)
• Creating a swap partition on the SD card
• Forcing 2D GPU rendering
• Setting a limit of ~2 for backgrounded apps (tried this, but didn't remember setting on reboot)
• Using a utility to move apps to the SD card
• Enabling Kernel Samepage Messaging
• Changing the I/O Scheduler (not sure what this would really do, or which one would be best for performance)
...so which ones do I do? All? None? Play around and see what works best for me? I really don't care about multitasking all that much, all I'm looking for is a more fluid UI and less application lags/lockups/freezes.
Thanks in advance for the help, by the way! I've become very attached to the hardware of my Desire Z and would like to get as much use out of it as I possibly can.
I know reducing the number of background processes to 2 or 3 makes the phone supper snappy for me. Without that I'm experiencing the same issues as you are. However, this setting causes certain background processes to halt and hence background notifications from apps such as facebook might simply seize to function properly.
I've been struggling with the issue of responsiveness, apps not responding, sluggishness, etc. ever since I started flashing custom ROMs on my G2 (so basically since day 1, somewhere in 2010). Alas, setting the hard, low limit for background processes is the best workaround I managed to find so far. I tried Supercharger (helps just a tiny bit), creating a swap partition (makes the phone even slower), kernel samepage messaging (no difference), changing VM heap size (no difference), and other possible solutions and hints I found here and there.
Cheers

Actually, regarding the downgrade, I did it and I am very impressed with the result, a fresh install of CM 7.2: Looks great, is really lag-free and responsive. I don't feel I have lost anything significant by not having the latest Android. Maybe this is also going to change over time, but for now it looks like something to be recommended.

I tried everything and it is still not smooth. The animation when i open an app or closing by pressing the homebutton is not always, but often laggy.
This is really annoying , because i tested the note 2 in the shop and it feels really smooth.
First my phone runs smooth at all, but after a month it starts to lag. After a fullwipe and custom rom and kernel the problem is still there. I tried over 40 roms and with every Kernel. Can you help me to solve my problem and make my phone smooth as the nexus 4 or galaxy nexus?

Hi,
I must say that if you've tried multiple roms and kernels, and wiping it every time, then it must be a hardware fault. I have only flashed my device once, it's stock, and it's very smooth almost every since moment of every single day. This device is VERY powerful. It shouldn't lag, especially not after a recent format. Is it possible you've killed something in it by accident? Dropped it? Kicked it? Liquid in it? Something short-circuiting?
It just seems strange that a newly formatted device would lag. Have you tried stock?

Hi, this is a warning. My Note 2 started to become laggy just before it suddenly died from Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS)
A Note 2 is one of the most powerful devices on the market and it SHOULD NOT LAG UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and mine never did, until the week it died.

Everything is working well and i never dropped my phone. I don't think, that this is a hardware fault because i had these lags with my S3 too. And most of my friends have a s3 too and i can see these laggs too. I am searching for a mod or app, which makes my Phone smoother. I've tried seeder, no different.
But thank you for your answer!
I have checked my chip with the app emmc brick bug check and it says that i got the sane chip with no sudden death. I should be safe.
Try rubbing some butter on your phone, that should make it smooth!
Or you could go Aosp.

I have both an S3 in my house and a Note 2 (my personal device), what are you doing and I can tell you if I'm getting any lag doing something. Because the S3 doesn't lag too much. Its only fault in my opinion is the lack for the extra gig of ram, but to do every day activities + gaming, it's a great device. The Note 2 hasn't lagged on me yet :s. I mean, come on! 4 cores and 2 gb of ram.
So, let us know what you're doing and how to reproduce the lag and I'd be more than happy to check it out with you. But I seriously think there is something wrong with your device if it lags on EVERY rom and EVERY kernel. That shouldn't happen.
Gaming, scrolle through the homescreens are very smooth. But when i open an app and press the homebutton, then the animation is very laggy. Most of the time my note is smooth , but only the animation while opening and closing apps is very laggy.
Yes i tried aosp and it is perfectly smooth, but the Touchwiz features and the s pen are the main reason, why i bought this phone. So i want to keep my Touchwiz Features but make my system more smooth.
Hello
I would recommend you to try this, I've been using this setup for a while now and it's the smoothest experience I've had with the phone yet, install stock ROM through ODIN, with the galaxy note 2 toolkit from this forum do the root plus custom recovery plus busy box plus rename option, freeze whatever Samsung apps you don't use, i will try to attach a screen shot to show you which ones I froze, install a custom kernel like perseus, red pill, or others, I prefer these two, and in the GPU tab change the minimum frequency to 260mhz, the maximum to 640, check set on boot, install greenify from the play store and check all the apps that you don't want running all the time and the reboot and check the performance after a couple days of use, please report back if i helped in any way.
Just one more screen shot
Idk if this will help but try it
Took me 15 min yo find the post
The problem was flashed s3 ROM then went back to note 2 ROM and phone became so laggy..
The solution was:
Flash this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003240
via odin (pda) aswell as the .pit file.
for some reason this was the only rom that cleared up all my issues.
I take no credit for this as this was another users find..
Hope it helps .. Give it a shot

Yes, I've read of people with an s3 flashing note 2 firmwares and people with a note 2 flashing s3 firmwares too, the main problem was lag and the only solution was to flash a full firmware that corresponded to the device, interesting, did any of us help you at all?
Thanks a lot guys!
I tried to freeze all the apps i don't need, with the result, that it laggs less now. Thanks
But ut it is still lagging sometimes. It is possible to make it smooth like the nexus4 without flashing a aosp rom?
More tipps?

As I said in my previous post.. There might be some system errors going on.. Flashing with odin the firmware from my previous post here hopefully can fix most of errors..
I had horrible lag and system not saving after restart.. Now it's all ok and everything is on

I installed the Sentinel rom for the note 2 which has been super smooth. Compiled with the Linaro compiler and it runs quicker than I've ever seen an android phone run. Only issue (as with all cm10 roms) is the lack of spen functionality but I think it's worth the sacrifice.

Ok. I flashed my Phone with odin and have done a fullwipw in the stock recovery. All ist fine and smooth, but the Animation is still a bit laggy. After flashing my custom rom, the phone ist still the same like before flashing and with stock rom.
Does anyone knows about a mod or something like that which boost my Phone?

OK try this ..
Flash a custom kernel.. Perseus is the best.
Force System to render on GPU .. Comes with ROMs like phoenix and ARHD..
Overclock GPU (to around 733 MHz) and CPU (make sure you lower the voltage for 1700 and 1800 MHz)
This should make your phone smooth since it put less power on CPU and put it on GPU which you don't use it a lot.. And GPU makes graphics run better..

Ok. I flashed ARHD and then Redpill Kernel. Set the max. GPU frequenz to 733mhz and then reboot. After reboot it feels the same . It has the same laggs while starting or closing apps. It is not always, but often.
I think it is Touchwiz that slows my quadcore beast down. But i don't want aosp because i use my s pen a lot and the other features too. Is there a way to keep my touchwiz features and a smooth rom?
Flashing another devices rom has its consequences. Worst case is wipe and start over. Have you tried Tweakbox?

Hi there,
Was hoping to get a response from Ayysir or Gideonx, but not sure if they're monitoring this thread (obviously everybody's expertise is welcome!). I've been having a bit of a problem with 3.69 (and had the same problem with 3.68). After a clean install on 3.69, including only a very few data restores from TiBU (and none on the apps that are giving me trouble), I've been consistently getting random but inevitable freezes on nearly all the games I play on my phone, sometimes to the point that the phone actually reboots. I get a screen flicker, and then progress slows to an absolute crawl and I even see frames flickering back and forth at times (i.e., the unicorn in RUA2 moves back and forth a frame or two on screen). When I can fully close the app, it usually reboots fine, but then freezes eventually as before. Everything else about the ROM is absolutely rock solid - I actually just commented to my wife that, other than the freeze up issue, I've never had such a clean ROM on my phone, awesome battery life, smooth as silk, etc.
I've tried pretty much all the kernel options available, in addition to stock, to no avail - the problem persists. No undervolting at all in any case, and the highest CPU temperature I've seen recorded through trickster has been 54 degrees, which shouldn't (I think) be enough to trigger heat-related issues should it? The CPU is generally sitting around 42 degrees under load, which seems great to me.
Anyways, if you have any thoughts about what could be causing the issue, I'd appreciate it. I'm assuming it's ROM-related because of the steps I've taken to eliminate it, but who knows, maybe the issue is hardware related and there's nothing to be done but replace the GPU or something.
Thanks,
--Rob
EDIT: Should also say that this is the second clean install I've done and the problem has continued in both cases (i.e., doesn't seem to be a bad install).
Just to add to my previous post: I've been reading that some problem on Nexus 4 devices have been having problems running games built with the Unity engine since the upgrade to 4.2.2. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this could be the culprit?

You may want to try this... Goto Settings --> Developer Options --> and check Disable Hardware Overlays (I haven't seen this mess with Halo functioning) and Force GPU Rendering. I think there was another related setting you need to turn on.
I got a warranty replacement and haven't been able to switch back from TouchWiz due to a baseband upgrade... So I apologize if that isn't as thorough as I would have liked.
I turned these settings on and game performance went back to normal.
HTH.

I'll give it a shot if it reappears - the problem hasn't occurred in two days now, after having been a very consistent issue since 3.68. All I've done in the meantime is some clean up of the file system via sd maid. Truly bizarre.
Thanks very much for the suggestion!
