Ubuntu for phones - Sprint LG Optimus G

So with Ubuntu for phones preview almost here, I am left wondering if there is a chance we will be able to flash it to our phones. Ubuntu says the nexus 4 and 10, and the galaxy nexus can flash it. Since our phone resembles the Nexus 4, anyone think it will be possible?

I was waiting for someone to ask. I'd also like to know

Our devs are waiting for a kernel we can use, I believe.
Then they've talked about porting all kinds of Roms. Ubuntu, WebOs, and others.

By the way, why is it that we don't have access to these? Our bootloader has been unlocked...what's getting in the way of AOSP and AOSP-based ROMs?

What bad reputation? Other variants of the optimus g have jellybean already and the att version has been successfully converted to a nexus 4. The only issue we are facing is how sprint has theirs set up. Has nothing to do with LG. Lg pretty much has jellybean for our phone completed. Just waiting for sprint to do their thing and release it OTA. This phone is by far the closest you will get to a nexus device without actually being a nexus and even then give it a few months and you can slap a nexus sticker on it and I swear you won't notice a difference.

Only the Korean version has JB. ATT is running a port of Korean version. Also, I guess you haven't heard some of the things the devs said about LG. Their code is all jacked up and how this is pretty much a beta phone they released. The devs are having so much problems due to the poor code by LG.
LG has reputation of not supporting their devices with software updates and it's showing.

At least the att version can run that. Also nexus 4 conversation. Enough said
But give it some time. They will figure it out and work around the crazy code or fix it. This is a brand new phone. Has barely been out a few months. Miracles don't happen over night. Wait till we get jellybean official. The phone will explode with ROMs and devs. Right now its not important to mess with ICS too much with jellybean just right around the corner. Your referring to them trying to port jellybean to this phone from ICS and Koreans jellybean. 4.1 to 4.2 will also be a smooth transition once 4.1 is out from lg.

Unfortunately it says the the report wasn't confirmed by Samsung, and it also says that its still gonna have to go through the carriers... dunno how att is because I'm new but I know vzw is a huge Hassel when it comes to pushing through any upgrades. Hopefully the code Samsung wrote form its handset gets leaked though because then we will have the capability to flash it without waiting for carrier approval.

Despite the fact that it's not really official (no Samsung confirmation) it's still good news. I doubt this would be an invented news, there's gotta be some truth behind it... now as for the carriers' part in this, that's another matter!

My theory is that the Jelly Bean leak since is actually a Sammy leak and is still being worked on by Tmobile and AT&T uses the almost the same kernel both d2 the devices. The new jelly bean leak has LTE settings in it meaning that you can set AT&T LTE/PTA APN settings and use 4G LTE in theory. Their are risk because the leak contains a new baseband, you can always reflash back to an older baseband though so this is not the biggest deal. The update does not include a new bootloader so no worries their. And you can always flash back to ICS. In my mind this may be worth fixing up a few files to see if it works. I'm going to give a try. I'll report back.
Looking forward to what you uncover drew

The system and everthing seems to copy over fine, it's the kernel that's giving me trouble right now. I'm going to work on it some more and see what I can find out, but by that time I'm sure an AT&T version will be out.
I'm still working on it and will continue.
What about using ktoon's or faux' JB kernel in the meantime?

The problem is the source.
We have ics and ics source. No one wants to waste time making ics aosp when jb has been out going on a year soon.
They just got source for the Korean jb version of our phone this week. They are working on it but it has some differences.
None of the phones are the same. Different cameras, radios, nfc chips, modems....
That is why.

Love this phone, love the hardware, but we've been hearing it's coming "soon" for months now. LG either did this on purpose, or miraculously made this the hardest phone to develop for. I'm now regretting switching away from Samsung...who seems to be much more in tune with the Dev community and providing what's needed to let developers have their way with the phones. I wish LG would get it together and give the dev's what they need.

I'm honestly so glad I switched from my bb to this. I don't have the crazy desire for JB. Just glad I got rid of the Bb
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I swear I am not trolling.
But you said your happy you got rid of the BlackBerry and I on the other hand really want to check out the new bb10. I don't think I will buy it. As much as it has to offer it still won't compare. It does feel a niche in the community.
I think it will do well in the older market (30+ professional outside of IT). There is also a tremendous gap now in phone sizes. The only phone with a halfway normal size seems to be the iPhone and most of us still assume the phone as trendy and a fancy feature phone. Not a mini laptop like the Android.
And the reason we want JB is a lot of us downgraded on the software to get a phone with superior hardware. Furthermore, most of us thought the software would catch up sooner than it has. ICS is great but it is like the first production year of a new model of car. Jelly Bean is more refined. There are also additions in performance, battery life, smoothness, and apps.
For example, my wife's phone will tell her what the expected drive time is to work. She didn't program it. It just knows do to her normal schedule. ICS is great software. JB brings with it the very early stages of AI that adapts to your needs.
Just think what Key Lime will bring us. Eventually it will be so advanced it will go one of two ways. One, to hard to develop. Or the other which I hope for, full integration. The software will know what screen you have and radio you use. You just install and go. We won't have to count in manufacturers to release the source. The software will adapt for your nfc chip and gpu.
I honestly don't know why it has taken so long already. The SOC should do a simple handshake with the OS and be in its way.
Um, what was I taking about.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Actually scratch that. I had the 8530 so I know the pain of waiting for an os bb6, and in the end we did get it lol
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Only reason i got rid of photon was because of moto's lack of drive to update phones that are more than capable of running ICS or JB.
The photon's performance would have been greatly improved

From an update standpiont, yes, Moto bites. From a general software standpoint, LG is the worst of the big names. Their OTA's run more like alphas, maybe betas. Have yet to see an LG without major software mistakes and I've worked on a fair number of them.
That being said, I know as soon as JB source drops joker, th3bill and myself are going to try to get as far away from LG's code as possible. This is mainly for our sanity.

Correct. Once Sprint JB source drops (hopefully after my move) I want to get all the devs together and go over how to approach future ROMs. I see a stock based, aosp and N4 based. Also see hybrids of all three as well as ports like Paranoid at that point.
I know we all have our strong and week points and think we should build off that for the end users. How is everybody doing for web space and domains? After the move I plan to restructure/rebuild Martian Imperium as a more multi-dev website and already have some folks on board for the change.

There's an Unofficial CM build in progress. I've been using it for a few days. The only problems are lack of camera, bluetooth issues (I can't confirm that) and the home button LEDs have been disabled. I'm sure once we have a solid CM base we'll start seeing more ROMs and ports.

thats not entirely true for the s3. it wasnt 8 mnths, it was like 5 - 6 mths. plus they released a couple of non-JB updates during that time before the official JB was released.

Yes the value pack was available for korean version earlier than that but again the phone was available there first.
4.2 & 4.3 for what? its the same stuff. I was hoping from google to released a full new revamp android version..but i feel like 4.2 & 4.3 are just maintenance update to patch stuff. Yes a few things here & there...but that's it.
Now the developer support for this phone has been a little slow. But unfortunately this phone is at&t exclusive witch is stupid move from LG.
But i will buy this phone again no doubt.

Just a little update I have been using the latest official cm11 nightlies for a couple weeks and I have found no bugs with them as long as you use pa gapps they don't break the 13mp camera like regular gapps do

been using CM11 m2 and m3 snapshots with no problems
Interesting that I still don't see a listing on Cyanogenmod for the ls970 when AT&T has theirs listed. I can't believe they sold that many more lgog's than sprint.
I have two phones that I updated to Cyanogenmod CM11 snapshots that are working great so far.
Don't see any real problems with any of the apps or features, but I am not a beta tester. I am using these as my everyday phones and they work as expected.
Held my breath when I rooted/unlocked and installed the new rom's since they were mine and my wife's phones. I did this because I was so pissed LG dropped support for the phone upgrades. Such a good phone to be left at 4.1.2.
Anyone that has an LGOG's on sprint should not have a problem as long as they follow the instructions on rooting and unlocking. Can't say anything about insurance and warranty, though. I found it easier to buy a used phone when one of my other phones lost its screen. Insurance is a racket and is cheaper to just get a used on ebay.
Gave a new lease on life to my phone.
We've all heard rumors that LG is testing the KitKat update on the G and G2, and rumors that AT&T might be getting it on their models... but those are just rumors unfortunately. Nothing's happened so far.

yup. shouldn't take long for the CyanogenMod Team to come up with CM11 or whatever it is now.

We may not, but expect awesome 4.4 ROMs. I'm buying a Nexus 5 soon though.

IF only the Nexus 5 would support sprint... lol looks like my amazing Optimus G will be around.
Even if we never get 4.4 I don't see a reason why our device would become outdated.
Who ever sees slowdowns on our device? Anyone ever see issues that would mean you have to have 4.4? My device seems just fine for me even if we don't get the official 4.4.. I am happy with my device..
The nexus 5 does support sprint! It was confirmed today!

I can't find the article but it was confirmed by sprint that if you buy the nexus 5 from Google you can activate it on sprint network.

Exactly, who cares about new phones or more cores? I love this phone, if I brake it, I would get the same again, This is enough power by far, the only thing that I have interest (And maybe others) is new features in the OS, nothing more

Yep, those at&t peeps usually get the good stuff first.
Guys, look at the link for the ATT one again.... It's for the Sprint version too. I just flashed it and it's up and running on my phone. Just make sure you follow the instructions.
Here is the link again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509457
Edit: While the ROM is flashed and running just fine, I can't seem to figure out how to connect to Sprint's network. He said you might have to fix your APNs or something so I'm going to try to pull the APNs.xml from another ROM and replace the one that comes standard. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Wait, you actually flashed the AT&T ROM? The GEEB version? I've never flashed anything that wasn't meant for our phones

I sure did, but unfortunately I can't figure out how to get connected to the Sprint network.... but other than that I'm playing on KitKat
It won't connect to sprint without some work, but how is the camera? Can you connect to WiFi? And how is the voice command (if WiFi works)?

Holy shiiiitttttt. You're crazy, man! I would never think to do that, lol I'm scared. How is KK, though?
And you probably won't get data on that ROM, ever, because its for GSM. It would take a lot more than just an APN swap to get it working.

WiFi was working just fine. The camera looks exactly the same as 4.3 to me. I didn't do a whole lot of testing because I needed to get my service back, so I'm currently LGNPSTing back to stock. Feel free to try it if you like, but you'll have to LGNPST to get your service back. And if it bricks your device you can't blame me.
I'll just be patient and wait for a Sprint release or go get a Nexus 5... Haven't decided yet.

I wasn't about to try it. I got all the kit kat apk's running on my carbon install and pretty happy with a mocked up kit kat install for the moment.
