Hi everyone,
I have just discovered RecoverX and it seems to be exactly what I need.
I would like to install CM to my Xperia Play and I am now trying to set up a recovery mode.
Phone : Xperia Play (R800i - French one but I don't think it matters) (rooted and unlocked bootloader)
Rom : Android 2.3.4
I used RecoverX downloaded thanks to this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773227 , so it must be version 1.6.
I followed the instructions and in the end I was given a nice "Installation Complete".
I tried to reboot my phone in recovery (turn off, turn on and tapping on Back button) but it still boots normally.
I tried to repeat the RecoverX installation three times but the result is the same.
I searched for some answers but didn't find anything.
Could somebody help me? I don't have any idea about what is wrong here (and obviously, I am a Noob).
Thank you!
Roul
Edit :
I forgot to mention that I have tried x-Parts app from google play to install a recovery mode but it didn't work either.
I tried several times and hit the button "reboot in recovery" but my phone is still rebooting normally.
try
try with search button
Wow that was weird...
Although I have already done a lot a reseach, I tried one more time to use "try" and I found someone saying that he didn't used the Back button but Home button to get into recovery home.
I also found another one saying that he had to use Volume Down.
I tried them both and the Volume Down button worked for me.
I am very confused about this...
I though there was only one way to get into recovery mode per phone.
Does the key button depends on the recovery mode installed?
The fact is I am now able to boot into recovery mode.
Thank you for your advice Mogulz93 (...) and most of all thanks to LEDelete and the recoverX project.

try this. its the V5 of the X-parts people have had problems with V6 and above to work on the play.

The button you press depends on the version of recovery and kernel you're using not the phone. With lupus kernel its the back button. Stock uses volume down.

Ok I understand better now. Thank you for this explanation abdel12345.
Since I succeeded in setting up a recovery I will not try your method right now but I keep that in mind, in case I need to set up a different one. Thank you crazymonkey05.
Yesterday I tried to flash CM9 (file : cm-9.1.0-zeus.zip from CM website ) but I had an error with status 7 and installation aborted.
Thanks to that I was able to try the restore feature, and it worked perfectly. I'm glad I did a back up before anything.
I am going to search for some answers online.
And finally, everything worked perfectly.
I used flashtool and now I have CM9 on my Xperia Play.
Thanks XDA

Hello,
I'm sure this gets asked so many times, but I can't seem to find any instructions that work to simply root my phone.
Phone details:
Model: GT-I8150
Android version: 2.3.6
Kernel: XXLA2
I've tried using Doomlord's easy rooting toolkit, which failed as I believe the exploit used was patched in the latest update.
I then tried the recovery method, detailed here.
I placed the update.zip on in the root of the internal sd, but when I go into recovery mode the volume keys do nothing. Only when I click the home button a few times do I see some yellow text which says installing update, but it fails with: "can't access system/VIR ...Rebooting" or something close (reboots too quick for me to see) There's no menu. Could be VIR standing for virgin, which is my service provider?
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Thank you

When you go to the recovery menu, make sure you hit the Menu-Button !!!
As soon the screen gets a bit grayed out, wait until the menu similiar to this appears:

If you get into the menu you will be able to navigate with the volume buttons.

Because the "backdoor" has been patched in the latest firmwares. So recovery method is the only rootable method working right now.

but it didn't work and i ignored for later on .... after few hours i tried to mute the phone and then it hit me that the vol down isn't working, i tried to press hard but no use... i tried to restore the recovery version that i normally used but no luck... and even tried to install another rom "i'm now using android revolution HD 6.3.3" but no luck.... the volum up key works perfectly and the volum down feels the same as always, nothing changed and it feels like working but it's not .... so have any one heared of my problem or faced it ?????!! hopefully i find the answer here...
i tired to search the forum but no luck every resualt was about hardware problems which i don't think i have" at least i hope so"

ok, volume rockers seem to be a common issue in these phones. To get to recovery you can use adb commands....plug the phone with usb debugging enabled and in the PC open a cmd as admin or a terminal as root, then type: adb reboot recovery....
make sure that u are running a touch recovery to avoid issues...
Thanks for your help glevitan but the thing is that getting in recovery is not really the main topic of the problem cuz i was getting to recovery through the app or throgh advance power menu.... the thing is i'm trying to find out some way to fix it through software rather than hardware solution, if it's possible since the phone didn't actully have an physical issu, and it just suddenly stopped working after updating the recovery ..... hope to find the fix. and thx again
Hi,
I know your time is precious and I have already done hours of researching, googling, and downloading...
But believe me, no luck. I only found two 2.3 ROMs, one from this forum (but was a 'rooted' one) and one from SamMobile forum.
Both didn't work properly. I even cannot dial numbers (among other problems).
Can anyone, please, tell me from where do I find an official/good ROM for samsung captivate glide i927 ?
Sorry for taking much of your time, I really appreciate it.
Ali
Here is a good ROM from dman its stock ICS rooted (there is unrooted one at bottom of post if you dont want root) also it comes with CRT off i think so it looks cool when you turn off your phone. Hope it helps

thanks, but Isn't there an odin version of it?
Because I have tried the CWM method but I cannot boot into recovery mode, I can boot only into download mode.
Not sure why, although I press upper sound + home + power but still get the wrong mode...
I would really appreciate it if anyone can give me a link to a gingerbread ROM that is flashable from odin for i927.
I have tried this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391730
but it does not work properly (many errors appear)
I also tried the one from sampro.pl but still have many problems.
----------------------------------- EDIT ------------------------------------------
Maybe when I flashed the ICS and then I want to downgrade to Ginger, I need something more than just PDA in odin...
maybe I also need to change bootloader ??
-------------------------------------------------- EDIT 2 ----------------------------
I note after flashing: "cannot access csc...." something like that written just after flashing.... any idea?
You need to only press volume down and power button....try that to get into cmw

Try using root booter, you gotta have root to use it but it will boot you into any mode supported by the phone.

As mentioned, the key combo for recovery is Volume Down + Power, that's the problem...
noob question...
Sorry to ask, but reading numerous forums has made me absolutely clueless as to what to do.
Long story short, My AT&T i927 is not rooted and i updated to official ICS via kies air and have been having multiple bugs, like the famous keyboard backlight issue (for which ive read the fix but was unable to implement it) and also, the pinch zoom gestures being of almost no use cuz they are THAT slow in response and the hd games on it have become extra laggy, the camera quality has become terrible.
I want to go back to gingerbread but dont know how so PLEASE, i request you to take few minutes out of your precious time and help me with one single post containing the step by step method and links to whatever it is that i need to download. I seriously appreciate this and would make sure this post is popular enough to not to be repeated again.
Eagerly awaiting your reply.
THANKS.

This isnt an odin version its a zip so all you have to do is flash it, but you want to make sure you have CWMR installed. I recommend the touch recovery because it makes it easier. Ill post link in bottom, also after you install you want to power off phone then hold power for 5 seconds and volume down to boot into recovery. To put CWMR on you need to use odin but once its on you will not need to use odin again unless another rom comes out that requires oneclick.

Go to gingerbread and try the kies emergency firmware recovery that might fix the issues but i havent tried so i dont know

This seriously is a issue worth notifying to Samsung. They shouldn't have released Kies update for the phone if it as under development. This isn't anything like Samsung. Samsung always tests the build and then releases it. I hope some samsung Official falls upon this thread and replys us all.

Aha, did you use the wrong recovery? I'm gonna take a blind-shot and think that you did. ;/ So maybe you cannot flash CM on it. It is common mistake. - What you are seeing right now is the stock LG charging pre-system. I think you have wiped the image from the system, so it shows you the RAW data instead.
Well, let it charge to 20-25%
Then do this:
1. Unplug the tablet from charger and let it turn fully off.
2. Press and HOLD Volume Down + Power Button.
3. On LG Logo appear, ONLY release Power key, still holding Volume Down. Then quickly press and hold Power and Volume UP also. So now you hold all three buttons. So you need three fingers.
This should take you to "Factory Reset", but when you have custom recovery, you can press Power and you will come to custom recovery. I think you can mount the external SD card and then flash a new recovery. Go find PhilZ recovery in the Original Android Development sub-forum here. You just flash the Zip inside of TWRP. When that is done, reboot and repeat the steps on the top of this post, then flash CM.
Keep on trying the key combo, it is a bit tricky, but it works. While you try and get to recovery, download PhilZ CWM touch and prepare the SD card on your computer, if you have the option.
Good luck.

Keep on trying the key combo. Hold power + volume down, when logo comes, release power, still hold volume down, then also hold power and volume up, so you hold all 3 buttons. But never release volume down.

Here is quote from someone else I found in another place but shutdown the thread without thinking.
I use the download mode to install the original official rom.
1. Download the LG MOBILE SUPPORT TOOL by this link:http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-V500-White
2. install the software in computer, Plug in USB cable with computer, Open the software LG MOBILE SUPPORT TOOL.
3. Turn off Pad and unplug.
4. press hold both volume up and volume down, Then plug in usb cable, And then pad is in downlaod mode
5. USB driver will be insatlled automatically
6. In LG MOBILE SUPPORT TOOL, click option---.country and language-OK, then click option--upgrade recovery
7. It will installe original official rom automatically.
8. After about 1.5 hours, The pad will be installed the last official room.
^ This is a quote and now I shut down the thread, sorry, don't know who said it, just got stoked when I saw it.

Go into http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551499 and scroll down to downloads.
You are on stock ROM, meaning you wanna go and check in your system settings - about tablet for the software information. Choose one of the three: V50010a, V50010c or V500e. Download the right one for your device. Then a few lines lower, download "Loki" from the link.
Enable developer settings in your Tablet and follow the adb instructions in the thread. This is the TWRP you need to flash a KitKat rom. The older versions will fck up your device. - Remember to root before you begin!

so far we are In the same page
I downloaded v50010a which Is my devIce then loki zip
but I have no Idea what Is cdm and adb I tried to open cmd and run thoose commands but I getting eroor adb not support something like that.
although I download adb.exe and fastbook and Installed It.
Is It any way to flash recovery though my tablet like goo apps or rom manager ?
thanks.
Go here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2553192
Read first post, donwload and enable developer options on Tablet.
Then download and run the .bat file. Then you get root.
Then you go download the V50010a.lok file and you rename the file to V50010a.img instead.
Then you go to market on phone and search for "Flashify", and you flash the .img in there. (I don't use it, but many people does.)
I recommend you study a bit on adb and fastboot for another time, since if anything crashes, adb is the way to go. Not Flashify. But for now Flashify GUI should be fine. Just remember the root first.
This is the last question I will help you with since all of your questions has been in other threads and you should be able to find them in the forums.

Happy to help, see you on the forums.
I have a Galaxy Nexus, GSM version. It was working fine about ~3 weeks ago. I turned it off and removed the SIM card as I upgraded to a new phone.
Now I've turned it on and it just hangs on boot showing the animated X.
I tried recovery mode and get a "No Command" error.
I've never done anything to this phone before, in other words it's just running standard Android. Any advice? I've looked through some past posts but it seems like a lot of people have rooted the phone with custom OS, etc. I've never done any of that. So trying to figure out what the issue is with this phone. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
GR

Maybe you don't even have a custom recovery installed yet? Not necessary, but since custom recovery are far more convenient than the stock one, you might wanna give it a try.

Thank you

Hold both VOLUME+ and VOLUME- keys, and while holding, long press POWER key. Do you see a green Android robot with its lids open? If yes, you're in fastboot mode, from which you can flash recovery, stock ROM, etc. (but if no...)
I'm on the phone now and can't provide links... Just first tell us whether you could boot into fastboot, will catch up later depending on your answer.

When the phone is off, if I press volume up/down + power then yes I see the screen that you're talking about. So I can boot into fastboot. When I choose Recovery Mode it restarts and that's when I get the No Command error.
Thank you so much for your help.

Install the correct ADB and fastboot drivers and files on your PC (I can't help you with this).
When your GNex is in fastboot, connect it to your PC, wait for it to get recognized.
Download CWM recovery here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager - you'll have to choose your device variant (GSM/Verizon/Sprint), and choose if you want touch or not. Downloaded file should be an *.img file.
Open a command prompt window on your PC, enter "fastboot flash recovery *PATH-TO-YOUR-RECOVERY*.img" (no quotes). After flashing completes, just boot into recovery and do what you should do.

Just want to thank everyone for all of the help. I really appreciate it. Andy, I did try several of the steps that you mentioned but for some reason the PC just wouldn't recognize the phone in fastboot mode. I tried both the Google and Samsung drivers.
In my searching I found this post though:

And realized that I should check samer's advice again. Turns out that I just wasn't pressing those two buttons in the correct sequence. I was doing it simultaneously and I guess you have to do it serially. At any rate was able to restore factory and now the phone is booting. Wow. What a pain. Still not sure what caused the phone to blow up in the first place.
At any rate really appreciate everyone's help.
Warm regards,
GR

Install the correct ADB and fastboot drivers and files on your PC (I can't help you with this).
When your GNex is in fastboot, connect it to your PC, wait for it to get recognized.
