Hi XDA users, I was wondering if someone could kindly answer a few of my questions:
Is S-Off coming any time soon? If not, do you think it is worth unlocking through HTCdev?
If I were to root and begin to modify things, would the value of the phone decrease for resale, or would I be able to restore everything to how it was originally?
I'm not sure how the process of installing custom ROMs works, could someone kindly explain?
How would I go about installing themes?
Thanks!

We still not have s-off yet but we are getting close
I don't see any drawbacks of having it unlocked through HTC..you have to be careful in following guides that's it
Rooting doesn't decrease vallue of your phone..and yes you can restore it completely to stock if you root and unlock bootloader

Apart from losing pretty much 100% of the warranty...

We don't have S-OFF
It is worth it if you want to use custom ROMs and Kernels, or applications that needs Rooting, like titanium backup...
Yes, the phone's price would drop, cause you void your warranty completely, and NO, you can't return it to the original state (after locking and un-rooting your phone, it will say "RE-LOCKED" instead of "LOCKED" in your boot loader menu)
After unlocking the phone and flashing CWM recovery, you just copy the custom ROM's file in your SD memory, reboot your phone into bootlader and do four things:
1- flashing the boot.img related to that ROM from fastboot (the developer who created the rom will give you the correct boot image too)
2- entering this command in fastboot: fastboot erase cache
3- going to CWM recovery and wiping your phone
4- installing the ROM from within the CWM recovery
Themes have installation instructions with them, read it
Okay so currently I am rooted with just the unlocked bootloader and since having trouble trying to s-off with this phone I am willing to try again but I have one question regarding what will happen to my phone while relocking since I'm already running roms and basically everything?

You need to re-lock bootloader or you will continue to have problems. You phone will be wiped clean during the process because you installing a different OTA.

after that i can just instal recovery and install one of my back ups again?
I'm in the same boat, but I'm not sure how to relock and get back to stock recovery, etc.

My Three model comes unlocked but is already behind when it comes to firmware. It also only has the APNs for Three (so I have to manually input for any other SIM I insert) and there's an annoying splash screen.
I'm not very well-read when it comes to flashing HTC devices but am I right in thinking that there is no way to flash stock firmware without S-off and bootloader unlock? One good thing about even the Sony handsets is that you can flash stock firmware without going through hell.
If I'm wrong could someone point me in the right direction. Not the end of the world if I can't 'stockify' but it would be nice
Just flash the stock Rom from Mike in the dev thread.
No need to change firmware. That would take s-off anyway.

Does this require boot loader unlocking or a simple flash?
Unlock bootloader.
Flash a recovery through Fastboot -
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Put rom on sd
In recovery backup current rom, then flash custom rom
Hmmm I'd have to have the 'tampered' warning and lose my warranty that way wouldn't I?
Might just live with it for now. Thanks though.
You won't lose warranty no.

I thought if you unlocked the bootloader it invalidated the warranty? Or have things changed?
That's a common misconception.
Unless you broke the actual hardware, they are still liable for it

As long as the issue isn't blatantly caused by unlocking it, there won't be a problem.
Mine have been s-off and unlocked. They just send them back locked and s-on

If I flash this stock ROM will it receive OTA updates just like a normal stock phone?
No, though you wouldn't need to the updated custom Rom will be out before the ota is.
Of course you can always go back to stock if you keep your backup.

I don't want to mess with flashing ROMs other than for this so I'll probably just leave it as it is. Thanks for your help anyway.
So here's a question for you tech experts.........
Say I unlock/root & S-OFF an HTC One M8, and right after I do all that, I save a backup in TWRP. Then for whatever reason I decide to get a new M8 to replace the original one. Can I use that same backup file on the NEW M8 phone? Meaning, by flashing it on the new phone via TWRP, will my phone automatically become unlocked/rooted & S-OFF'd?! Or do I still have to manually do all that over again?? I don't need or want to do it in reality, but just wondering (like in case I ever lose my phone, etc).
Thank You,

You will have to do everything from the beginning. I wish it would be that easy Then noone would have to pay for s-off and everyone would use your TWRP nandroid to get it
A nandroid can be restored if the phone is the same type of phone (international to international, Sprint to Sprint....etc etc) you must first unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery to restore the nand.

So wait, you're saying it CAN be done if you're dealing with the same exact phone?? I don't mean about all the settings and app settings stuff, I mean about retaining root and S-OFF?

What you propose would be impossible to do, since you can't install TWRP with a locked bootloader.
But no, nothing that is backed up on a nandroid involves the bootloader unlock or S-off (you can't "migrate" them with TWRP). Of those, only root will carry over (as that is contained in the ROM).

Red,
Ok that makes sense. So after unlocking the bootloader and gaining TWRP Recovery, I won't be able to migrate S-OFF (or unlock), but I WILL be able to migrate root?!!
Thanks,

No you can switch over the software and nothing more. All unlocking stuff need to be done from scratch.

Are you currently on a custom ROM? If so, they are pre-rooted by definition. So restoring a nandroid of a custom ROM will give you root, yes. But so will flashing any custom ROM on the new device or just flashing SuperSU/SU.
Even if on a stock ROM and rooted, I believe this will also migrate over if you restore a nandroid to a new device.
But in any case, root is a simple thing once the bootloader is unlocked and custom recovery is installed. It takes about 2 minutes, so whether you can migrate this or not via TWRP is really a very minor point.

Red,
Yeah I use ViperOne M8. Or do you just mean am I running things on a rooted nandroid recovery? The answer is yes to that one as well. The one I'm using now is unlocked rooted and S-OFF'd.
So basically again, I HAVE to unlock b/c that's the only way to get TWRP access, but the root can be quickly obtained via flashing my custom ROM. And of course S-OFF must be repeated because that can't be simply flashed the way root is.
Well I think it took me longer than 2 minutes, but still, I'd rather just flash it anyway. lol
Thanks!!!

Yes, whether you restore a nandroid of a rooted ROM, or flash a rooted ROM, SU or SuperSU is contained in the ROM. So you will have root.

If your bootloader is (re)locked, then I'd start with unlocking it again. I'm not sure that you can unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, but SunShine supports the Verizon M9. Check that out.

Thank you very much for the link! I hope it will solve my problem since actually this device was flashed with ICE rom and then I lost the data connection. Thanks again. I will try to use that solution when I have free time to work on.
