I'm not sure what I expect by posting this, but I'm kinda at a loss and figured I'd see if anyone else had this happen.
Last night one of my throw away email accounts(yahoo) sent out an enormous amount of both texts and emails with some spam links. Some were to people in my contacts(phone numbers) and others were to email addresses in my sent folder(including random craiglist anonymous numbers) and the rest were to completely random strange addresses I don't recognize. The only reason I know this happened was when I checked my phone this morning, I had 35 Mailer daemon failure notices in my yahoo account(plus I got 1 email from a friend warning I'd been hacked).
I checked my laptop, my T889, and my t959v and none of them have records in the sent folder of anything being sent. I think it might have been my phone since there were links sent via texts also (or possibly google?), but I can't pin point it.
Is there a way to see if my phone has been compromised? Also I should say, I have no contacts saved in my yahoo account. The emails were sent out to addresses that were in my "sent history" or to some phone numbers in my contacts on sd.
I'm root, stock, 4.1.1 Uvalk8 No updates since the multi-window
I have installed a few "questionable"apps on my phone, but I don't think uninstalling and wait to see is going to help. IDK?!
Thanks
Check your sent box within Yahoo email. If no sent email that is part of this spam, then the spammer just might had spoofed your email.
But just in case:
First thing to do is to change your password in Yahoo. Then change your password with any services that you used the same password that you had with Yahoo.
I don't know if Yahoo does verification by cell text message before changing password. If they do that then activate it. Any other services that provides that service activate it.
Also activate ssl in the settings. That will help in securing your sessions within Yahoo email.
Believe you me, there is no virus within your devices that caused this.
But if you want to check your Android devices for such a virus then use an app like Lookout to scan your Android devices.

Ok great, I appreciate it. I had already checked my sent folders on each device with the yahoo account( my account does not sync to each device, if I send an email from one phone, it doesn't show in sent folder on laptop viceversa) And I changed my password. I guess I got a little nervous because some apps that I've installed seem a little too in my business... for example: Craigslist notifier, meetup, ustv free etc. The ustv free had a tricky adware that makes it look like you're closing the ad, but really you're opening it. Looks like Lookout has good reviews. You have used it? I'm looking for the sll option in the settings on Yahoo right now.....
Thanks!
Ssl in Yahoo mail. Go to Yahoo mail from your browser. Within the mail options, general, ssl option will be at the bottom.
Yes, I use Lookout. Lookout got a few bad apps.
A role of thumb I use is: Paid apps are less likely to have virus, worms, notication ads, etc. Not always true. But more true then not.
And you less likely to get virus, worms, notication ads, etc when you use apps from trusted source and trusted developers.

Ok great,
All 273 apps scanned and found safe. And I enabled ssl in yahoo. Still confused about the texts sent to ~some~ phone numbers in my contacts list, but from my yahoo account. I have no contacts saved in yahoo account.
Thanks for your help!! Fingers crossed that my business acquaintances don't get any more emails promoting Penis enlargement
Also check for the ssl in the incoming and outgoing email settings of your favorite email app.
Sorry forgot.

Why dont you update to the latest version VALL4 which takes care of exynos vulnerability ?

To be honest, I must have looked at a dozen different posts/threads and have seen a dozen different answers on how to update AFTER root. I haven't seen any two of the same answer, so I just let it go. I do want to fix the exynos vulnerability, but I'm not really interested in the other updates (4.1.2?) because of the rumored bluetooth issues. I'm very happy with root stock on this phone, so I def don't want to start flashing and experimenting with roms that have the updates ported.
What is the best way to update? Is there a thread that will take my hand and walk me through it?
Apps that alarmed me were
meetup
craigslist client
ustv free
Afterfocus
trackthisforme
NO offense to the devs. It's just these were the recent apps I installed, and some of them run in the background.
This is the safest root method of updating. Latest with fix and still Android 4.1.1

ustv I nevered tried.
The rest of them tried and nothing there to cause this problem.
Never liked meetup. With these type of services you end up spending money in some way or another. But nothing in app to cause this problem.

I don't know how i never saw this thread. It's dated Nov of last year, I've had this since Oct. 24 U. S release date. I used option 2(cf_auto in the thread under "root info" on top of forum) So do i have to factory reset or unroot in supersu before following this thread? Or is there an answer in there already? Thanks again

I don't know where you are at in your current rom and recovery. So this may or may not help.
If you still have the stock recovery then this is what I did. I wipe cache and reset the device. I flash with odin the stock rom without root. Wipe cache. Then I flash with odin the latest injected root stock rom.
The thread has lots of information to help you further. If you need help then ask within the thread. Lots of users been where you are at now to help. And the developer of the injected root stock rom sometimes answers questions too.

Ok, thanks.
I'll give it a read when i get off the road.
Also: my account sent out a bunch of spam again last night. I changed password yesterday, scanned phone with lookout, scanned laptop with avg, applied ssl, and deleted email from other phone. Not sure what is happening, but I'm considering deleting entire email account. I can't fathom how this happened, but it's yahoo so I'm not entirely surprised.

Sounds like they are spoofing your email. Meaning that they are now using their own server to send out these spam emails with your email address and without using your account.
Once they had your contacts (for addresses to send spam), they don't need your email account anymore. They just use their own servers to send spam with your email address as the respond to and coming from email.
This is a known issue with Yahoo mail.

Had the same problem with my yahoo acct. Could not figure it out for the life of me. At the time I was running lookout. I recently uninstalled lookout and all recently installed apps. Completely deleted that email acct. Yahoo CS was of no help. (Was my main email) and opened a gmail. Avast is def better than lookout.imo and now no more headaches.

This happened to me with yahoo too but pretty sure it wasn't a mobile app. Why did you have contacts saved to a "throw away account"? Anyway deleted my contacts and nothing since.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app
I didn't have contacts saved in the Yahoo account. That was the point of this post. The emails it sent out were to addresses of emails that were also in my "sent folder". If that were it, then I would have assumed it was just a Yahoo issue...BUT it also sent to some of my phone contacts as text messages too......that was the alarming factor. The phone numbers are on phone only, not in Yahoo account.

Most of those you shouldnt delete, I would keep them all tbh. The Play as Stock isnt exactly bloat filled anyway. If you really want a performence boost you'd want to look at custom kernels and overclocking.

Update: I figured out which for files to keep and which to delete. I am interested in installing a custom ROM now but I am unsure on how to proceed. I want to be able to overclock my processor but I am new it all. I have R800x model rooted via zergrush (2.3.3 original android version). I am on a CDMA network. Is there a way for me to install a new ROM and kernel and whatnot to start overclocking my phone that is simple enough? I do not know if my bootloader is unlocked or not, but I think it's still locked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

"LBE Privacy Guard" not working in rom "Paranoid Android V1.992" on Google Nexus
The app LBE Privacy Guard can be installed and accessed in Paranoid Android V1.992. But once it is allowed "Active Protection Mode" (key to its functionality) and granted Superuser rights the phone kills itself in a loop and is inaccessible with only a restore of a previous state helping. I noticed other users on xda dev. having similar problems. i can not ask in the forum for Paranoid Android V1.992 because i am considered stupid.
LBE is the only app that allows precise management of app permissions, that i could find. i dont understand how anyone can live without it. it also includes a firewall. its free.
Questions:
- does anyone know how to get LBE Privacy Guard running in Paranoid Android 1.992? Is there a general problem in that rom that is going to be fixed with V2.0?
- is there any other app to disallow permissions? (that is not killing my phone?!?)
thanks in advance and kudos to the creators of paranoid android. and to the makers of LBE Privacy Guard.
That app is yet to be update to support jelly bean. It's not a problem with paranoid android
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel, overclocked to 1.4GHz
thanks kyokeun1234,
i should have thought of that. i used paranoid android V1.5 on Android 4.0 ICS, on that LBE worked well. just 2 days ago i updated to paranoid android V1.992 which also included an update of the android version to 4.1 JB.
do you have an idea how to manage permissions in Jelly Bean? I don't want to live without that.

right now i cant check as i did not install it, because it could kill my phone. shortly ago Paranoid Android received an update to version 2.0 and than 2.1. i am running the install of PA 2.1 right now. after everything runs and i made a backup of the stable system i will give LBE another try and report on the version. maybe it works. i also wrote the developer of LBE an email, but no reply as of now, duh, propably got to the spam folder.
@qtwrk: do you know of any app that allows to manage permissions? that seems *so crucial* to me.

permission denied is an app that had this feature...
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel, overclocked to 1.4GHz
guess what: after updating to PA 2.1 ... still same problem. LBE will kill the phone with only a restore as a fix. VERY BAD. Verson of LBE was 3.0.1009.
tried Permissions Denied, but thats crap. no good UI. no mentioning of the permission that allows to read the phones IMEI and in-free-app claim that paid version has more features. does paid version allow to configure IMEI-reading-permission??? who knows...
firewall can at least disallow connections of apps

On my note 2, I planned to never add google account. I am very concerned about privacy. I have some apps on Nexus 7 that are only offered in google play. Is there are way to copies these app from Nexus 7 over to Note 2 and run them on Note 2, without going through Google Play (which requires setting up google account) ?
You have to be rooted on Nexus 7. As long as the app is not encrypted then the apk file should be in this directory:
/data/app
Some apps like to verify the rights to use the app from the Google Play Store.
So what privacy & security issues are you concerned about with Google?
I know that this is a concern of little children ordering in app purchases and worse. That I understand preventing Google account on a device given to the children to play with.
Another idea is to make a dummy Google account without any of your personal information. This making you a nameless user. There your children can't do any app purchases or in app purchases. There you can install any free apps.

"Another idea is to make a dummy Google account without any of your personal information. This making you a nameless user. There your children can't do any app purchases or in app purchases. There you can install any free apps. "
I completely agree with this. Is there a reason this would not work for you?
I can see other reasons to not have your account on the device. Like if this is an employee device. In that case you want your personal life stay personal. Or you into activities that it is better to be off grid as possible. Or you don't trust corporations and government.
The question is whether or not the app this person wants to move is paid version or not and is this okay to do or not. There are few apps that is purchased for one device. Those apps are not going to work without checking with Google Play Store first. The encrypted apps are only encrypted to insure that users can't modified the app. But still can get the apk file when first installing on device.
Personally as long as I purchased the apps and I can use the apps on more than one device then this is not pirating. I do this for devices for my 5yo son. First I create a dummy account and install free apps. Then I install the paid apps that I got from my device that I am currently using.
Now one thing, Amazon App Store needs to be installed to run apps from that store. But Amazon App Store has a password protection that you can activate. That way the child can't do in app purchases and app purchases (unless they become to know the password).
This is one area that Google needs to improve. Specially for parents.
Just as a reminder: Many users do this with Titanium Backup Pro. Again need to be rooted for this.

You can download APK apps on Aptoide. You don't need an account or anything. %100 Private. You can download most of the same apps avaliable on the Play Store with out any Google Account set up.
Just Google the Aptoide site and download it.

You need account for paid apps. The downside of many (not all, but many) free apps is the advertising on many free apps. If you are worried about Google collecting data to target you with customized advertising then you would not like apps with advertising.
For me personally I get annoyed with all the advertising. And a 5yo boy is not a good target for advertising. Specially with inappropriate advertising. Which is why I go for paid apps when possible. And the reason I install paid apps for my son.
What Google needs to do to improve the OS is have several profiles that share the same apps but only the have some profiles to be able to install apps and modify the device. This giving a child access to the device without worrying about the child purchasing apps, install apps and modify the device.

Ah, OK, I see... Have seen some thing about bypassing PIN for corporate email a few months back. Will look for it again, when I have time Monday. I thought you were disabling it completely or something.
OK, I don't have a corporate setup with exchange so I cannot test.

This way no old settings or double apps will be created.

I'm frustrated and overwhelmed about how to go about rooting my brand new Galaxy Tab S2. I don't know which correct files to download and which method of rooting to use. This would be my first time rooting, so please bare with me. I only need to have root access so that I can use Titanium Backup, which I had just purchased. The tablet has not been used yet and has not been updated, even though it keeps reminding me to install the new version. It is wifi only, no carrier. Help would be greatly appreciated. Tablet info below.

Heh, don't worry we've all been there.
First thing though is that this is the wrong forum for your device, this is for the original Tab S and not the more recent Tab S2 which you have. Although I suspect the process will be very similar (Odin, etc) it's always best to get the info for your exact model.
So with that in mind, here's where you want to go: Tab S2 forums
And even more specifically, here's a great thread for you to read and which should answer all your questions: [GUIDE][HOW-TO] Root Tab S2 and more
Of course, please be aware of things like warranty coverage and such being affected after rooting.
Btw, if/after you do root check out "Adaway" (just google for the apk), it's probably my main reason for rooting my devices (with xposed a close second).
Best of luck!
as the man said up here but i would ad: let your tablet update to marshmallow 6 first and then read about how to install TWRP with ODIN and the new supersu for mm6 and how to root touchwiz MM6.
There are some new TWRP and supersu coming out on these days. But your tablet is too new to have a custom Rom, so let it update to MM6 first. Sorry to say but titanium is useless with MM6 since your apps AND settings are all reinstalled from the google server. It's a new feature of MM6. I know I've bought Titanium 3 weeks ago and now it's useless to me. One thing that I'm worried about is that if you root your tablet before you get MM6, and you trip knox you might not get the update from samsung. You should get MM6 soon. Don't forget to do a back up if you want to practice with your 5.0.2. Have fun.
update : some of the sources confirmed that Samsung will be introducing the update for the Tab S2 in the month of February next year 2016 source: www.pc-tablet.com/2015/10/09/7477/s...marshmallow-software-update-release-date.html
