[Q] ROM and Activation Issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My EVO 4G has been retired for a while now, and during that time I still played around on it with roms as they progressed, but now my wife's phone is broken and we cannot / do not want to upgrade or buy a new phone, so for the next month or two she needs to use my old EVO 4G. Problem is, I can't activate it.
I know I need a Sense ROM to activate, so I have flashed three different ROMs and each has the same problem: just about all apps crash when the ROM boots up. I have done multiple wipes, superwipes, etc, etc. but I think the problem is related having been on Jelly Bean? (CM10)
All I need is to activate the phone, then I can nandroid back to CM10...

Have you tried doing one of the updates through hboot. Captain throwback has a few different ones you could try but make sure you do not flash one that has the hboot in it or you could lose your root access. I have lost my copys or I would give you a link. Maybe the captian himself will chime in here.

How bad are these apps "crashing" at startup? You just need to be able to get to the software updates control panel. You don't need any apps to work besides "settings"

I can't launch the dialer app or any of the google apps, but in one of the ROMS I was able to pull up settings and go in to the software updates control panel; I thought there was a hands free activation section in Sense roms, but I couldn't find anything. Is there another option I am overlooking for activation?
@jlmancuso: I haven't; I'll look into it.

There's been a flurry of people doing what you're trying to do in recent days. We just went over all this in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148926
Scroll down to post 8 or so for info on hands free activation.
And yes, you'll need to get that sense ROM working well enough to use the dialer app for EPST codes.

Evo Boost Mobile CustomRom Flash

Quick question. I have a evo 4g on boost mobile. Everything works and its also rooted. This was how i purchased the phone. If i decide to flash a custom rom, is it going to bump my current boost settings back to sprint? Or is that only if i update the PRL or the radio? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Htc Evo using XDA App
I am not sure, but you can always nandroid the rom ( make a backup) and then restore , but a new rom does not change PRL or RADIO
I actually already did the backup. But that was the answer i was looking for. As long as those arent touched i should be okay.

would be interested to know how it turned out. I looking to get my EVO flashed to Boost Mobile and have questions if you are willing to answer.

To be on the safe side, get APN Backup and Restore, it is free from the market. This will save your APN (access point network), just in case there are any config parameters (like proxy settings) that are needed in boost. The poster above was right though, flashing the device with a new rom will not change your Radio, your PRL, or any of your PST programming parameters.
Good luck.
did u ever try flashing a custom rom? if so what happen?

You can flash a custom rom to your EVO, it wont change any of the parameters already in the phone. On the other hand, if you are able to "update profile" from your EVO there is a slight chance that it will affect that. SLIGHT chance. I have flashed Fresh EVO and Sprint Lovers without a problem the only issue I'm having is not being able to update profile even with Stock rom 2.2. I keep getting error "1012". Aside from that everything works great. Like everyone has said, always make a backup, you can never be to careful.
Cheers and happy flashing.

Sorry guys totally forgot about this thread! I'm on my second EVO and I've flashed SENSE and ASOP roms and have updated everything from the RADIO to the NV, PRI and such. Nothing gets changed with SENSE roms, however being that ASOP roms don't have a EPST, MMS is a hit or miss. Most of the time miss.
A fix for this is to flash a ASOP rom, nandroid backup, flash a SENSE rom and configure EPST and restore the ASOP backup.

Im also getting boost on my evo but what should i configure my EPST to to make sure mms still works?
It will work, just you will have to reset your mms. Dail ##DATA# and hit edit.

bought a used EVO on Ebay which has been flashed to boost and activated for me by the seller. Everything went perfect I rooted and flashed cyanogenmod as soon as I got home from the Post Office, lol. I would also like to mention that calling with/without google voice works perfect using the native android google voice app. The only thing I am still struggling with is conditional call forwarding and using Google Voice voicemail as the service for when people call my actual cell number. It still works as the voicemail provider when they call my google voice number. Overall I am very happy with Boost and the EVO. $50 unlimited with shrinkage is awesome. And when they say $50 they mean $50. As in 50 dollars and zer0 cents, thats right, no TAX!!!
Bostmobile Rom
Cyanogen 7 (nighties) works like a charm on boost for the EVO.
I wanted to use a Rooted Stock Rom for a change, I've been using Cyanogen 7 nighties for about 8 months with lil to non issues.....GPS locks for navigation, mms works, everything works just fine...I just want to try something new...like the new stock, it looks nice...love the clock/weather gatget...I want to try it out, but I lash the latest Rooted Stock Rom it messes up my mms and I cant get the ##3282# to change the MMS URL. Whats up with that? did the dialer code for DATA change in 2.3.5? or am I doing something wrong?

Using Cyanogen is a bit tricky since it doesn't support those codes. I've heard you had to backup the rom you were using, flash the new rom and recover the backup. That wouldn't over write anything, but would put back your settings you used in the previous rom.
How do I backup all of my flashed Boost mobile settings?
You folks seem to be a very knowledgable crowd, perhaps you can help me with this.
I just purchased an Evo 3d and had it flashed over to boost at my local boost store. Upon picking it up from them he went over a few things, most of which made perfect sense like not updating certain things because it will set me back to sprint but the one thing that did not is he said no hard resets. Problem being most if not every custom rom either automatically or advise you to do a factory reset from custom recovery. How am I supposed to flash my precious cyanogenmod with that hanging over my head lol? So I've been trying to learn how to flash using cdma workshop and qpst so that I can copy/backup all of the already flashed Boost info so that if things go wrong Im good. Also I hear some of the non-SENS based roms require little workarounds to keep data and mms going which also would probably require a copy of the Boost flash info. Things like the AAA shared secret and HA secret etc.
Any insight to this problem would be most appreciated!

[Q] phone dialer keeps coming up on its own...

hey guys.
what could cause the phone/dialer to open up on its own?
for example, when I install a new app and lookout scans it, the dialer opens. every once in a while for no reason, the dialer opens. when the phone first boots up, the dialer opens.
this used to happen before with an earlier rom I had and I don't remember how/what fixed it.
any ideas where to start looking?

Making my helpful rounds . Try getting rid of lookout first. I'm willing to bet you its the culprit.
~ d3rk
i've had Lookout since last year and this was not happening. i'm 100% its something to do with an apk...maybe even the phone .apk itself as i changed it out with a custom one made by JsChiSurf...
i'll look into it when I get a chance. in the meantime, any other suggestions welcome!

Ahhh gotcha. You're using a custom phone apk mod? Did it start after you started using it?
~ d3rk
no progress so far guys.
first I uninstalled LookOut and continued using my custom .apk. there was no change. the phone dialer kept coming up on its own. mostly when a new program is installed.
so then I removed the phone.apk and htcdialer.apk files and replaced them with the stock rom files. also left LookOut uninstalled. the original dialer would still come up when a new program was installed.
I've sinced re-installed LookOut and no change :-(
any other ideas?
i'm confident it's got to be an app or service that's running that causes it to bring up the dialer...but which one?
I can't help with the problem, but suspect something recently installed is causing this behavior.
My strategy for testing new apps is to always make a backup image first. Over the course of a week, I'll acquire a list of apps that may be of use. One evening a week, after backing up, i'll start installing these apps. Phone will get used for a few days. If no ill effects, I leave things as is, otherwise the backup gets restored, and I try to figure out what caused the issue.
You could try flashing the rom zip for the current rom ontop of itself. If anything in /system got changed, this will take care of it.
I think I narrowed it to Voicemail Notifier, which I need for voicemail notifications (I'm on metropcs)...
lets see if it doesn't happen anymore!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I am having the same problem with my EVO flashed to Mobi PCS using Voicemail Notifier. This seems to have fixed it: go to the Voice Dialer Preferences and uncheck :"Dial Voicemail"
actually you have a virus on your mobile and you have never noticed. lmao! what you need is a factory reset. then upgrade to 2.3 OTA. everything will start working again. LOL!!!!
okay, so maybe not do the OTA. lol
As a reminder. one of our Roms we use are made by people in china. I don't trust china people. They can all jump off a tall building or bridge. you know, like what they did in WW2. When they were brain washed that we were evil people. lmao. when in fact they are the evil ones. They do internet attack at us all the time. They also hire people to act like they are normal people making mods that secretly put code in our phones to monitor our communications. also, maybe to install DOS attack scripts to take down our own american based networks.
You all know I'm right. :-D
ps. I know everyone on here is laughing their ass off right now. as I am writing this. But who knows. it could be true. :-D

Possible JB Bug: View Type: Alphabetical list

So I've been fighting with Touchwiz force closing quite often since the JB update. I flashed the full official ROM from Telus, as well as 2 other Telus based ROMS, all suffered from the same problem. The only thread I found pertaining to a similar issue is HERE.
Issue:
Touchwiz force-closing (stopping), when creating folders, or moving icons on the homescreen (like to delete them or move them to another homescreen).
In a nutshell, myself and 2 friends all have GS3s. 2 of us were having the issue, myself (rooted) and my friend (unrooted, completely stock), where as another friend (rooted) was not having the issue.
After much hair pulling and testing (3 different ROMS, using different computers and cables to flash, having my device flashed by my friend who was not having the issue), I came to the conclusion that Touchwiz was force closing ONLY when the App Drawer was in "Alpahbetical List" view type. When it was in a "grid" view type, there were no issues.
I was wondering if anyone else could do some testing and let me know if I'm on the right track with this.
I ask that you change your App menu to "Alphabetical List", and use it normally for a few hours or days, and let me know if you see any instances of Touchwiz force closing. If I see enough response, I'll start looking into how to place a bug report on this.
Thanks.
Did you wipe/factory reset? You should not be having issues like that if you did.I don't see any of that.

I wiped, factory reset, cleared caches, etc several times, as well as trying 3 different ROMS like I said.
The only way I could fix it was to clear data from Touchwiz Home. But the issue would still come back after a few hours.
So you are on JB, and are using "Alphabetical list" without issues??
Did you back up system and maybe restored the data wipe titanium by accident? If you have a clean install with nothing restored yet does it do this? If not install back all your apps one by one widget by widget to see what is causing this. Could be an app compatible issue. I tried to replicate your issue and could not at all.

Essentially a clean install, nothing installed or restored with titanium, and the issue was there. I think the only apps I had installed were Chrome browser, Go SMS (or Handcent, I tried them both because I thought maybe one of them was causing the issue), and Facebook. Other than that, I was on a stock rom (rooted).
I was just able to re-create the issue by doing the following:
1) Switch app list view type to "Alphabetical list".
2) Go to task manager, do a "Clear memory"
3) Go to homescreen, grab an icon, as if to remove it from home screen, and let it go.
Touchwiz force closes (Unfortunately, TouchWiz Home has stopped). As soon as I set it back to "Alpahbetical grid", everything works as it should.
Note: I do have a folder in the shortcut area on the homescreen (bottom, next to the Apps button), not sure if this makes a difference, but it usually starts when a folder is created...
I was able to recreate this problem on 2 Telus devices, and 1 stock Rogers device, all running JB.
Followed that and I still unable to recreate this. I also have a folder on mine in dock for email with Gmail and email in it. I am at&t though. Even though I am not sure if it matters.

Hmmmm, interesting. I was thinking of perhaps trying an AT&T based ROM (all I've tried were Telus based, and was able to recreate the bug on a friends Rogers device as well...). Maybe it's Canadian devices only? I did notice that it doesn't seem to be a very widespread issue. Although there was a thread about it, there were very few responses...
I'll see about flashing an AT&T ROM, but for the moment, its working properly in grid view, so I'm good with that.
Thanks for the input though!
I'm not able to reproduce this issue on my SGH-I747M (Rogers) running stock (not rooted) Android 4.1.1.
If you factory reset/wipe data on the stock ROM, configure the phone without installing any third-party apps from the Play Store (heck, don't even bother signing in with a Google account initially for this one), then set the app drawer to alphabetical list and attempt to reproduce the issue as per your earlier steps does it still occur? Just curious.

Thanks for trying it out.
I was actually able to reproduce it on my friends stock Rogers 4.1.1 OS.
I was able to reproduce it with a minimal install of third-party apps (mentioned in another post, I think I had Chrome, Go SMS and Facebook installed...).
Perhaps I'll give it a try if I flash a new ROM anytime soon. Right now, my device is working well, and I only figured out it was the List option causing me the problem after installing a bunch of apps and customizing. Don't feel like resetting right now just to try to reproduce it, lol.
Tested on Rogers Stock 4.1.1 root injected, no issues at all here.

[Q] 3rd party used my phone: How to check for modified/added files

Hey everyone,
Got randomly (?) searched at the airport and they took my phone into the back room to "check" things.
I don't know about you guys, but I don't like people going through my things- especially when I don't know what they're doing. So now I would like to know if anything was changed or added, as unlikely as it may be.
How can I go about finding out if anything was installed or modified?

It could happen anytime you leave your device unattended. Make sure you're using a screen lock with a reasonably short time of auto activation. If you're not rooted, check your list of apps. Devices without SU binary (rooted) should not be possible to be hacked badly within few minutes, or hidden spyware apps be installed, passwords revealed.

[Q] Anyone able to share "AT&T Hot Spots" from their rom?

I'm trying to get at&t hot spots to work on a custom rom and the apk that I have I'm not sure if it is the right one I should be doing. Anyone able to put the apk on dropbox or something.
Justice bump. I asked this question a little while ago and never got a good answer. Out of curiousity what APK is it that you've got? I know digging through the processes it is listed as running in my phone. Replicating this would be great for ROMs, especially since I'm working part time at Starbucks....

This is what I tried using...
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fc68tce5vdvyayk/att_hotspots.apk
It shows up as a running app but it doesn't do anything. I'm going to check my bosses phone (S4) tomorrow to see how the app opens when I open it on his phone. On my phone, the app keeps saying there is an update when I select it but it never updates.
I agree that it would be great to get this working. A colleague mentioned that he was able to by both installing the apk and copying the apk to \system\app (for auto running). So far no luck on my end
This is different than the one that I had tried and looks to be the right one. I downloaded it to my SD card and went to install and got a message saying it was already installed as a system app (makes sense for stock). Have you tried doing it from there to keep functionality of it when flashing ROMs? I would say this is the right track alright.
Is your custom rom AOSP-based? Because I think I remember reading that the functionality of "AT&T hot spots" is built into the framework for touchwiz roms.
It is. I havent been able to find confirmation either way. Just that the hot spots app is what makes the connection.

First things first you have to make sure your kernel supports wifi tethering, without this you are wasting your time. In all my time on android as long as tethering is enabled in the kernel its just a matter of turning on the hotspot from within the settings menu. I don't recall the touchwiz menus to tell you exactly where the tethering option is but in aosp based roms its under the 'more' option in the wireless and networks section. This is also where you can set the ssid, security encryption, etc for the wireless network you are broadcasting.
Hi. It's not wifi tethering that I'm after. I want to use the AT&T wifi service that my office building gets since my cell signal is terrible at work. It's the only thing I miss from the Samsung ROM
OK so I flashed a ROM and tried installing the apk you were using and it seems to have made a small difference. I'm automatically connected without signing in to Starbucks AT&T WiFi (the way I would usually have to without the app) after having saved the network. Strange thing is looking at the app itself seems to suggest its not running. Running Apps shows 0.00kb in data. I'm not sure if its then a function of the ROM (which I doubt, its never done this before) or the app.
