[Q] Unrootable DHD? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was lent my friend's DHD and I'm trying to flash a custom recovery to flash a custom rom.
Here are my experiences.
In desperation, and after reading (and following) a dusin different guides on how to root, I turn to this forum....
First off the data:
Country: USA
Model: HTC Desire HD A9191
Android version: 2.3.5
Sense: 3.0
Software no. / ROM: 3.16.751.3
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-ga375925 [email protected] #1 Fri Jun 22 16:53:33 CST 2012
I managed to unlock the bootloader but have been unsuccessful rooting the phone. I've tried guides with:
SuperOneClick V2.1, V2.2, V2.3.1, V2.3.3
Most of them stops at step #7 like many others have experienced. Tried numerous things that people have posted as a fix but with no luck.
Odin3V1.85
Did all that the guides told me to but it wont detect my phone.
Gingerbreak V1.1, V1.2
It runs but seems to be cycling forever. No luck. (I did wait up towards 20 mins).
AMT V1.8.5
Says I need to downgrade my ROM but also says I MUST root before I downgrade.... :/
HTC Quickroot V1.1.13
Wont run on Insecure Boot.img mode (probably because I dont know how).
On Universal Exploit mode it begins working and looks fine but crashes after reboot of the phone upon detection.
AAHK (Ace Advanced Hack Kit) attn 2011/2012
It states that I need a downgrade. I accepted and it began working. Looked promising. However once it's done and goes back to the menu it starts all over again and says I need to downgrade... endless cycle. I checked afterwards and found that nothing had changed on the phone.
Visionary root (unknkown version)
It ran but crashed to black screen shortly after. Tried a few times - no luck.
SO..... Help please! Is this the only Desire HD on earth that cannot be rooted???
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm desperate now!
Thanks

Relock bootloader, download latest hack kit, try again. AAHK is essentially idiot proof
Sent from my Desire HD

As Guy says, AAHK does not work on an unlocked boot loader.

[Q] How To Root

Hey guys
I am totally new to the android phones, and now having a DHD which has the following specs:
Android Ver. 2.2
BaseBand Ver. 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_m
Kernel Ver. 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d

Now i looked at this link -
and didn't understand if i have to downgrade my DHD as well or is my version old enough so i can skip right ahead to the S-Off and ROOT?
can anyone tell me from what ver., and Ver. of what, do you have to perform downgrading?
thanks.
No need to downgrade.
Use this one:

how to root gingerbread
hi everybody,
forgive me if I' writing in the wrong place but for me has been enough difficult to get here..
I'm a rookie android user and I've been flying over the forums for the last three days, I'm really getting crazy.
Here are the specifics of my phone (branded):
android version 2.3.3
kernel version 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
software number 2.50.405.2
and here's the problem:
I have purchased an AR drone and I'm trying to get it connected so I visited the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072281
seems that the first thing i need is a ROOTED Desire HD . I have tried every thing. Visionary (in different releases installed with ASTRO) seems not to be working. When i select Temproot now, after a while, the screen turns black. I waited for several minutes but nothing happened. So I needed to exit the program selecting "home". At that point it didn't allow me to rerun the app, I needed to reboot the phone to get it working again but no success.
So I tried GINGERBREAK 1.2 but after 25 minutes the rebooting process was still going on and I guessed that something was not working properly (as usual), so I stopped it. I think there is also a problem with Superuser (v 2.3.6.3), infact when I try to update it, it says "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary" (by the way...sorry for my inexperience, but what does "flash something" mean????).Anyway, my phone doesn't reboot on clockwork recovery.
Moreover, upon opening Rom manager (v4.3.2.4) it tells me that I must root my phone to get it working (of course) and that it cannot find Superuser at "system/bin/su" or "system/xbin/su". Guess what! I don't have such files on my phone.....
At this time i don't know what else I can do, I'm relly frustrated.
Can anyone help me out? keep in mind that if you have any kind of solution, I need some very "plain" explanation like if you were talking to your 5 years old son, please
Thanks
If we update with software number 2.50.405.2 can we root?
No, firmware > 2.37 cannot be rooted.
Thanks for the info, I guess I have to get rid of my AR Drone

[Q] help with root for HTC Desire HD (android 2.3.5 / software 3.12.178.2)

Hello,
Firstly, thank you to all the people who have contributed to helping others root their phones. There is a lot of information and software that has been written and made available for free and it is really appreciated.
Now, onto business...

I wonder as well with my DHD on 2.3.5. I triedSuperoneclick 2.3.3 ... it runs through and says it's rooted ... but it isn't ;(
I also tried triedSuperoneclick. Just seemed to not complete after step #7 on my PC.
This allowed me to get a temp root:
[GUIDE] Downgrade from 3.13 (Sense 3.0) roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424023
I downgraded to the previous official HTC Desire HD Rom ... rooting worked after that, Now it's happily running ICD 4.0.3. Did that useing the Ace Hack Toolscript.
I tried AAHK, but it didn't like my build number for some reason. Good to hear you got yours working too.
So much faster without all the vodafone bloat on there. Boot time used to be so long that I would fear a reboot. Also running is so much faster.
Tried the newest Ace Hack? Has a newer version number, maybe it helps. It did hack my DHD with 2.3.5.
Hi , I have been having the exact same issue as you, tried most things with no luck, was wondering if you have had any success
Can those failing to root please specify which version of aahk you are using?
You have to downgrade so you'll be able to s-off, because with s-on you can't have perm root. I don't recommend you to use Ace Hack, i think misc_version method is pretty much safer, but remember you have to read everything (radio version!!!, hboot,....) in order to prevent any hard brick.
You don't need perm root you just need temp root (using superoneclick), although
you have to change the misc_version to the Ruu software your are using to downgrade (i.e 1.32.405.6). Do md5check for all downloaded files.
Good Luck.

The only working tool to root and gain S-OFF is the Hack Kit. You won´t find it here but is a matter of search only.
Unlocking the bootloader with HTCDEV is useless and besides, you leave track and therefore you might lose warranty....The hack kit works for your build, but needs to be downgraded first. Just read a bit more in the effen manual....:good:

You could try modacco visionary. I cant say it would work on the DHD, but since you are so desperate in rooting your DHD which has a defective volume rocker.....you give it a try.
I mean it worked on Mytouch 4g running 2.2. And the Mytouch 4g and the Desire HD basically have the same chipset and also share some features. Thats why devs mostly port from the Mytouch 4g and devs from the Mytouch 4g port from the DHD. So as i said you can give it a try.
But i am not responsible for what happens to your DHD.

Before i answer your question, i have a little question for you.
Do you want to just root or you want to flash a custom rom.

Tried.. read... - Failed to get clockwork on DHD :(

Hi Guys
As per the title I am struggling to get my dhd S-off / rooted / clockwork installed. Iv read and read and thought ok im ready so I downloaded ace hack and all my ADB drivers are installed.
So turned on phone (usb debugging enabled) run ace as admin and pushed 1.
It recognized the phone and said cannot continue must downgrade, do you want me to downgrade y/n?
So I thought well yeah so it downloaded the file and pushed it to my sd card, and then rebooted into hboot and the phone auto found the file and started loading it.
When finished flashing, it rebooted and just hung on the HTC screen. that's as far as I have got. I did see the hboot version had changed but that's all. So the only thing I could do was to Flash a RUU to get the phone working again. (Which worked)
Here is info about phone:
Android version - 2.3.5
Htc Sense Version - 3.0
Software number - 3.12.405.1
Kernel Version - 2.6.35.10-g931a37e
[email protected]#1
Wed Nov9 14:04:03 CST 2011
Baseband Version - 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04_28_M
Build Number - 3.12.405.1 CL199157
If someone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
I cant understand why these seem harder when my GS3 was very easy.
Maybe its just me :silly:
Edit forgot to say that after flashing RUU I went to htcdev and unlocked bootloader. (don't no if that's going to make a difference)
If you've unlocked with HTC dev, you're one step closer to flashing roms.
See if you can install a custom recovery, and then flash the rom you want. However, to get it booting you'll have to push the boot image via adb after you flash a rom (it'll be in the respective rom's .zip file, just copy it out), otherwise you'll be stuck on the splash screen.
It's a hassle compared to normal flashing if you rooted with aahk, but at least you'll get something going.
I haven't used the later versions of aahk, I rooted back in sense 2.2 days, can't help you there.

ok thanks for replying, so would it be a matter off following these steps h**p://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=88
just got to push that to the phone then I could run ace hack and s-off / root etc.. etc..?
I just don't understand why the ace hack didn't downgrade it properly

Foxy, if your phone Was downgraded You Need To run the hack Kit again. That You are running Android 2.3.3 And sense 2.1....if You are not, then You are not downgraded And You Need to achive that first.

[Q] I've had some rooting/flashing problems and could use some guidance.

Decided I wanted to liberate my HTC One V from the preloaded apps. I used Hoosan2000's tool to unlock the bootloader. That went fine, but somewhere along the line I got click-happy and changed something I shouldn't have and got the "This build is for development purposes only..." splash screen problem. I could restart into the bootloader, but trying to go into recovery would only reboot into the HTC splash screen. I've been poring over this forum and a variety of other google results for a week and I have the phone in a state of "sort of working." I can now boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery, but when I click on any of the options, instead of bringing up more options, it just goes to the blank CWM background screen (the tophat). I can start the phone and actually get it to boot into stock Sense (it appears to be stock Sense now at least...certainly none of my old stuff is present), but WiFi is stuck in "turning on." I *think* I have Superuser privelages, but, beyond having SuperSU installed on there, I don't know how to tell if my phone is properly rooted or of what use that would be to me, as the only way to boot up into Sense is through the "install superboot.bat" file when I have it hooked up to the computer via USB.
In summation, I'd like to get this phone working, whether it is a custom ROM or just back to Stock. I've got my old Samsung Mez for the time being, but it has a whole host of other problem and is not reliable. Being new to this, I am just having trouble parsing a lot of the abbreviations and jargon I find in tutorials, so if any of you are able and willing to just give me guidance, I feel like I am close to resolving this issue.

CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
Like I said, I just want this phone back up and running. No longer care if I get to put a custom ROM on it or not (although it seems like it would be easier to put a custom one on there as I, for the life of me, haven't been able to find the stock version that I had originally anywhere to flash to...no, I didn't make a backup. I thought I had, but, I didn't).
Any help would be really appreciated. I swear I have searched these forums and found a lot of useful info here, but I am stuck at an impasse and I don't know what to do next. Feel like I am gingerly walking the line of "I will fix this and it will be ok" and "I will brick this and my wife is gonna be pissssssed" and I am sure you all can guess which side I want to land on.
Thanks.
You will fix this and it will be ok. I had the same problem with that version of CWMrecovery; updating to a newer version or to TWRP ought to help.
Newer CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173863
TWRP: http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/120 (you'll want to follow the recovery image method, since you can't properly boot into your phone, I think)
Having a working recovery should make the whole thing a whole lot easier, so that would be my next step. From what you've said, since you can still get into recovery I assume you can get into your bootloader and so you should be able to install whichever one?
I think Superuser roots as part of the installation process, although I'm not 100% sure on that.
Using hansoon to help you " one click root " had you flash a kernel (boot.img) I'm almost positive that since you are US Cellular CDMA and not Virgin Mobile CDMA the modules for a working WiFi are not in your stock Rom. Causing the ' WiFi turning on ' delima.
Personally I've never used CWMrecovery for more than a day, but I do know that if you flash the recovery.img of CWM then try to boot into recovery and you have issues.... Then flash a different custom recovery ( don't boot it though ) and reflash the CWM one again. Worked for me. But then I discovered TWRP and never looked back.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers over and over again, and now finally seem to be able to get a good adb connection.
however, neither revolutionary tool nor unrevoked3 will work. both find the phone but fail to "do their thing":
revolutionary (downloaded today from revolutionary.io) fails after:
Zerging Root... this might take a minute or so.. _rawadb_handle_msg: unknown command 69766564 Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. OR unexpected CLSE. Try again.
unrevoked3 (again fresh download from their website) fails after:
installing package file: 2900000(or so)bytes
installing unrevoked3 service
internal error: installing package failed
i am completely stuck here and can find no way around it.
There is alot about downgrading the boot from 1.01.0002, but i don't have this (and couldnt get that to work either?
what am I missing - i know its something easy/basic.
thanks for any suggestions/help.

revolutionary (downloaded today from revolutionary.io) fails after:

You will need to unlock your bootloader on http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ then use revolutionary or otherwise your phone is root proof!

that's the key is it? noone has mentioned that in the forums (though they are pretty old)
struggled with that even, as don't know what the base RUU is to select on 1st page...

Before you attempt to unlock your hboot via htcdev (lots worse that s-off) can you tell me what android programs you have installed on your pc, like htcsync of sony flashtool, android commander. anything like that? its probably a program thats interfeering with your system and not its drivers. Do not update, as to get s-off again you will have to just downgrade back to where you are now :good:

thanks heavy_metal_man
i don't think i have anything currently running on the system.
now have android sdk stuff and the universal android drivers.
have uninstalled htc sync manager and htc sync (older version) and removed everything else remotely anrdroid/htc-like from uninstall programs screen.
the great thing is i can now consistently connect to my device in both adb and fastboot modes, so i am definitely making progress. i think the key was that the PC's usb socket i was using is a little intermittent - i have now swapped to a different one (also USB2 instead of 3) and i'm getting a much more consistent connection!
however - i have been trying to unlock the bootloader using htcdev site - but having trouble with the RUU - it now connecte fine and reboots my device into recovery but then crashes. every time.
are you telling me i don't need to RUU on the htcdev site? can i s-off/root without??
thanks again

I would recommend attempting revolutionary from revolutionary.io again, assuming that your hboot is still 1.01.0001! keeping in mind that all htc sync type programs are a no-no ( but you have taken care of that ) usb3 ports a no-no for almost all android development and tools (including this one ) and lastly dont install the revolutionary version of clockworkmod recovery as it has a "charging bug" follow this guide and you shall be fine I recommend that you add clockworkmod recovery version 5.0.2.0 from post 2 section 6. using the pc49img.zip method is usually the easiest. tap this thread to let me know how you got on
yay it worked without problem!
thanks for all your help.
pretty sure it was just the USB3 that was the problem - why have i not read anywhere that this is a no no??
thanks all
drnickf
Pretty sure usb3 was not widely used at the time, ergo not a known issue
