I was testing WiFi Direct on my Android Devices. My devices are galaxy nexus. I do some tests by this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.budius.WiFiShoot.
My test is that:
Android 4.2.2 connect to Android 4.1.1
Android 4.1.1 connect to Android 4.1.1
Android 4.0.4 connect to Android 4.1.1
Android 4.1.1 connect to Android 4.0.4
None of above testing is successfully to connect each other.
If I try to make them "connect", I'll be able to see an invitation of WifiDirect connection, but after I "accept" this invitation, the status of this device changed to "invited", while on the other device (which sent the invitation initially) got no response. Thus a wifi-direct connection can never be made among the two device. No broadcast event will be callback.
Even i try to build the google sample WifiDirectDemo for testing, this app cannot work.
Anyone can help me?
Thanks a lot.
WiFi Direct is broken, i can't get it to work either.

You shall try using the Wi-Fi Shoot app.
For new it was the only chance to make it work flawlessly

You've to wait until first developer support it in their Apps. There's an official API for Wifi direct in Android ICS.
Wifi Direct on the SGS2 (and probably other Samsung phones) is named that way misleadingly. It's their proprietary transfer function making use of Wi-Fi Direct and they decided to call it that way. On the Galaxy Nexus, checking the option enables applications to use the Wi-Fi Direct APIs and that's it.
Does the Gnex support Miracast with the latest 4.2 update? Obviously the Nexus 4 does, but Google stated 4.2 supports Miracast. Just wondering if this applies to the Gnex.
Check under wifi direct.
The quick settings toggle doesn't show the wifi direct icon, nor can I find it in the Wifi direct options.
In the quick settings, it shows the alarm clock icon.
Or maybe I'm looking it incorrectly in the wifi direct menu? (although I don't think so that's the case).
It does not support it from what I can see on This site.
That beeing said, I couldnt find the certificate for the Nexus 4 either (I don't know the model number for that phone though).
I did some skirmishing and apparently, this page: http://support.google.com/nexus/bin...ings_wifi&answer=2864005&rd=1#/answer/2864005 says that you can connect to TVs via the Wi-Fi Direct option.
Now, I'm TOTALLY confused!

I have a Samsung TV and can connect to it via Wi-Fi direct but beyond that I have no idea what to do. I tried to send YouTube videos, pictures, etc but there is no option to share and nothing else I could see in the settings. If anyone wants me to test anything let me know.

same here... I've a Samsung es8000
Have 64E8000 PDP and i can connect via Wi-Fi-Direct but after a few seconds the connection is broken!
Think Wi-Fi-Direct has nothing to do with Wi-Di/Miracast...
The Galaxy Nexus supports WiFi Direct. It does not support Miracast.

Has anyone figured out how to get WiFi direct working?
I've used it in the Galaxy S III and you just choose a picture and share it via WiFi direct.
But I'm connected to my girlfriend's nexus with my nexus right now and I don't have the option to share anything...
Mine didnt work with 4.1.2 either.. Never figured out why..

anyone sorted this out?
it seems that on the gnex google provided the api (functionality) but no the interface...
I have a galaxy note 10.1 where also the interface in implemented by samsung, still I can connect gnex with note but file transfer fails
Some problem on me.
Hi there... struggling a bit with this bluetooth tethering.
So I've done the bluetooth tethering thing before with other devices including my current Razr HD which I sometimes bluetooth tether to my ipad2. There it's a pretty straightforward process.
On the Nexus... not so much. I can get it working, but it's something that takes a little finagling; I have to re-pair the devices if I disconnect.
So after unpairing on my N7, I do the following to make BT tethering work.
1) Select the available device (my RAZR HD for BT tethering) to pair and connect
2) It'll show the pairing code on both devices... I hit pair on them relatively quickly... and then
3) Quickly hit the settings button for the RAZR HD on my N7 screen and select the internet access check mark option. This step has to happen within a few seconds.
If I wait longer than a few seconds after pairing, then if I try to do the internet access check mark... well, it won't work. It refuses to be check marked.
And, as I mentioned before... after disconnecting, I can't just reselect the device to retether; I have to unpair and go through the process again.
Maybe I'll do a video showing success or failure of this if this isn't too clear but... maybe someone can shed some light on this?
Okay... I just did a video of this, showing this thing both not working (by not selecting internet access quickly enough after pairing) as well as working at the end.

I'm having a similar issue with my S4...the Nexus doesn't even see the internet tethering profile and when I try to initiate it from the S4 side, it just goes to "connecting" and then stops.
Bluetooth tethering is working perfectly for me between the Nexus 7 (2013) and my Galaxy Nexus, both running 4.3.

Maybe it's a 4.3 -> 4.2 thing then. I wonder if this RAZR HD will get a 4.3 update anytime soon...
Still really disappointed that my ipad2 just works while the N7 doesn't...
Hi, I owned a tab pro 10.1, not rooted, screen mirroring (with my Samsung TV) works fine until I connect to vpn. Does anyone know why it happens and how to resolve this? I need the vpn to connect to netflix. Appreciate any help in advance. Thanks!

I have got this problem too. I have a Samsung notes 3, stock rom and would love to use vpn and screen mirroring for the exact same reason. As a matter of fact, this issue affects anything that uses wifi direct. VPN and wifi direct do not work together, they seem incompatible after the update to 4.4.2 kitkat. This seems a serious bug that has been very seldom discussed. Is it possible our devices have something unusual?
Vpn screen mirroring allshare cast miracast wifi direct are all terms associated with this issue.
Hi did you guys solved the problem. I too met with this issue after upgrading to kitkat. Am using note 8. Need some help from experts. Would like to watch uk programs on tv thru screen mirroring.
Is there any confirmed Android version this used to work. It's so important to me, I think I would even downgrade.
Of course it would be a lot better if there was a general solution to this problem. It seems that all trafic even the screen mirroring itself gets routed to the new address.

I had same problem when my s4 updated to 4.4.2 so I think 4.4.1 should work. Any ideas where I can find that version and change it on my phone as I used to use vpn and allshare cast together all the time?
VPN is point to point tunneling. Therefore, it is proper to close off all other IPC channels. It is functioning property.

I second that. First of all, it used to work just fine according to a couple of forum members.
Furthermore VPN is a VIRTUAL private network, making you appear, you had another IP adress to the outside world. In your local network, everything else should work.

Any update on this guys? A pain in the t*ts. Its effecting my s4 & s5 both 4.4.2 rooted. A rooted s3 on a lower FW works ok but i don't want to have to keep the s3 just for that. As others posted only fails after you connect to a VPN and I need it for the same reason as others i.e. different regions of netflix.
screen mirroring
Hello, any update regarding this issue?, any ideas if this is gonna be fixed on the 5.0 lollipop update? one last question is there an aosp rom out there for the 12.2 or note 8.0 or S5 that supports screen mirroring that i can try to fix this issue, to have vpn and screen mirroring on at the same time? thank you and sorry for my poor English.
Screen Mirroring + VPN isn't working since KitKat (was working fine with Jelly Bean) for all Samsung devices (as far as I know).
There is no solution for sure as downgrade (wasn't able to do so on Galaxy Note 10.1 2014) was reported as not fixing the issue (as issue seems to be in the Kernel).
VPN with Lollipop seems quite uncertain (add new feature to select which App should use VPN or not, but lot of complaints of people about VPN simply not working).
I'm crossing fingers and I hope someone will have good news soon.
So i had this problem until i downloaded the boxpn app and miracast shortcut app. You have to have an account with boxpn but it's only 38 for 12 months. So i turn on my Samsung tv, i have a galaxy s6. Open the miracast app then turn on the vpn and it works fine. Screen mirroring and vpn
I like to stream but I can not stream and use vpn when I use screen mirroring on my phone I have a Samsung Galaxy grand is there a solution
I have tried this effort using box VPN and Miracast at the same time. It didn't worked and disconnect from WiFi.
There is only one solution for this problem you can use USB cable screenmirroring and from this if you connect with vpn it will not disconnect for reference you can checkout youtube that how to use screen mirroring using USB . Hence problem solved enjoy
Just exclude Android System from your VPN connection if your VPN app the functionality of excluding selected apps.
I had this problem for years and just suddenly came up with this idea.
