Review Ravpower WifiDisk: Mobile wireless storage reader - General Accessories

Ok so I've been somewhat following Ravpower for a while since I really enjoy their 10,400 mah powerbank and saw on amazon that they have this new product called the WifiDisk out. In comparison, I've been looking at the Seagate Goflex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage too but it's a bit on the pricey end, and then somehow I came across the Ravpower WiFi Disk on Amazon and went ahead and bought it. It's actually not a wireless mobile external hard drive, but a wireless memory card/storage reader and battery charger. This can read SD cards, USB flash drives/ any storage device that takes 2.0 usb ports. Also you can even charge your phone or tablet too since it has a built in 2.0 USB port.
Pros:
- Creates its own network wireless point/hotspot so I can access my files from anywhere through my phone and tablet.
- Can enable DDNS to allow you to remotely access the device by a registered hostname. If set up (which comes with a cost if you choose to do this), you can access this drive on your tablet, phone, computer from anywhere where there's internet while leaving this device at home. However I think having this personally with you is a better option.
- Built in user interface which can be accessed through any mobile web browser and standard computer or laptop.
- This can be an instant bridge between my computer and portable devices. Once I load something onto the wifi disk with SD card from my computer for example, I can instantly see this on my portable device after refreshing.
- Wirelessly stream my videos and music and access files to my nexus 7.
- I can wirelessly connect this to 5 different devices where I can then stream 5 different videos at the same time. Friends have been very grateful during our road trip.
- I can still connect to my regular internet through this after setting it up.
- Can also be used as an external battery charger. Contains 3,000 mah battery.
- I have an external hard drive already and I can plug it into this, which gives my hard drive wireless access.
- Can have almost unlimited amount of storage space since there is no fixed amount, however you would have to carry a lot of SD cards and/or thumb drives if you want to carry your entire library to minimize bulk and weight.
- Having this device has expanded my storage from 8g on my nexus 7 to unlimited.
- Small, thin, and light to carry around. Really good size to be tucked away in a backpack, purse, duffel bag. Even a pocket.
- Cheaper alternative to more expensive wireless hard drives or cloud services.
Cons:
- Suggested app, "MobileFun", have some issues. I can't seem to transfer files from my wifi disk to my phone and errors sometimes pops up in some Asian language.... Luckily I can access the user control panel on the browser by putting in the wifi disk's ip address http://10.10.10.254/ into the url field.
- Takes a while for the network to show up on my phone and tablet. Might be standard though.
- Wish battery life was longer.
- Range radius is about 10-15 feet.
- Scratches easily and since it's white, I can see it getting dirty fast if you're not careful.
- Wish battery life was longer. 3000mah is not enough for long travels.
- No power gauge so I can't tell how much battery is left in this thing.
I wish the battery life could be longer but I guess 5 hours is ok too if you have a power source kind of close by - like if you're using it on a road trip. I can see some people may want more since this is a pretty useful device and can be used for a long time. The range of the WifiDisk could be better too but still impressive considering this is wireless. Friends and I had a caravan of 3 cars during our trip and the range was ok at times, but it did drop if a car drops 1-2 car lengths away from me The connection does get spotty. Great for media but not so much if you want to get work done because you can't directly work on your files on this device. You can only download it then work on it directly from your laptop or whatever, and then upload it again back onto the sd card or storage with this wifi disk.
Overall, great product for the price. I'm pretty happy with it.

User interface same on all devices that have a web browser.
The blue light is actually a nice cool tone blue. Photo didn't pick it up well.

I just saw these on Amazon, one thing I wanted to be sure of. Am I reading right that this will act as a wifi file server, even when no internet is present? We are about to do a long car trip, and it would be good if I could load up one of these for the girls to watch movies on their Kindel Fires on the road.
Thanks

Yup. And it works great. If you go through the Wizard setup, you can make it so you connect to your home internet too. But it works without internet as well. It's its own network hotspot so all you have to do is connect to it from your device as if you're connecting to a new wifi network.

Can the USB port act as a Pass - Thru (when directly connected to the tablet, obviously) for High powered devices such as USB Ethernet Adapter
ie:
USB Ethernet --> RAVPOWER --> USB Cable --> Tablet

I'm not exactly sure.

Got mine and works well. When inserting any usb, it powers the USB which diminishes battery life when stored, so only plug the USB in when you need it otherwise its a pretty cool product.
I have an Anker 10k battery that I add to the mix and my WD 1tb. Yes it's clunky, but when sitting in my laptop bag, I can't see it, but works for hours and hours.

wifi vs. mobile data
A possible showstopper for me is that if I connect to it via wifi, then I lose my mobile data connection. I'd like to be able to use a mobile data app like google navigation while at the same time playing files from the rav wifidisk. If I can't keep both interfaces on, I may end up returning it to amazon. Too bad; it seems to be an amazing device.

I found a solution although I'm not sure how reliable it'll be.
The ravpower wifidisk has two wireless connections; one that accepts clients (LAN) and one where it acts as a client to another wireless network (WAN)
Fortunately it's cifs server listens on both.
I turned on wireless tethering on my phone. Then I connected from a laptop to it's LAN interface (WiFiSD-xxxx) and configured it's WAN/internet wireless connection to connect to the phone's tethering AP. I also ran the windows mobilefun to discover it's WiFiSD-xxxx ip address and connected via internet explorer. username admin; no password.
In there I discovered the IP address that the tethering AP had give it. If that dhcp assigned address doesn't stay put, I'll put in a static address.
Back on the phone, I ran cifsmanager to connect to the RAV, using the ip address the RAV requested from the tethering AP. Now I have both mobile and ravpower connections on the phone.

Do you know what settings you used for CIFSmanager ? I cant seem to get it to work on mine.
Here is a quick connectivity review I did :

Hi Green Ranger,
Possible to transfer digital photographs directly from SD card to portable HDD, when both are mounted onto this device.
With only Android smartphone instead of computer / laptop?

Apologies for the late reply, but yes, if you use es explorer or solid explorer, you should be able to browse to your device and copy/paste images into there. I think you need a smartphone/PC to do the transfer, the wifidisk wont do it itself.

I connected the XDA to LAN and WAN without a PC

Soon after buying the T-Mobile MDA, it became painfully obvious that the performance of GPRS connectivity – at least in my area – is plain horrible! My guess is that I’m not alone, since a common question posted in XDA-related sites is how to WiFi with the XDA.
Well, there is no SDIO slot in the XDA that will support the SD WiFi cards, so the only way of getting connected to a LAN or WAN without schlepping your PC to act as a proxy server for pass-through would be to use a LAN/WAN-to-RS232 converter that could be plugged to the serial port socket on the XDA. I have tried a few RS232 I/O adapters with the XDA. and my results are available at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/prutchi/xda_connectivity.doc
(you can also try http://mywebpages.comcast.net/prutchi/xda_connectivity.htm, but I'm having some trouble with the figures)
You'll notice that I manage to communicate with resources on the net via a terminal, but haven't been able to trick IE into accepting my RS232 feed. If you try any of these interfaces and manage to open a socket, please let all of us know how.
Cheers,
David
Excellent work David,
I was able to replilcate your setup well! I am playing with a USB WAP and working on the DLLs to make it recognizable in Pocket IE. Working on understanding the connections and interface methods.
Used a GPS protocol as source and am doing some tweaks. I will post any updates or success! The only issue I am finding with this solutions is the size of the devices, but once we figure out the connection details we can port it over to smaller, power efficient devices.
Take care
Hi Ronin!
Any progress?
My intention was to use a RS232 wireless “wire” (two wireless RS232 dongles that transparently simulate an RS232 cable) to establish a wireless sync passthrough on the mean time.
Today I tried connecting via RS232 900MHz “Ticks” by Data Hunter ( The "Tick" is a complete data radio that parasitically draws all of its operating power from the RS232 data interface). However, I wasn't able to make it work
I'm pretty sure that I'm using the correct pinout configuration, but the XDA doesn't actively turn on COM1. Instead, it passively listens for activity from the PC. This leaves the Tick without power, and the PC sees no response. I'll try tickling the data ready lines to see if I can get it to establish the wireless link before actually establishing a sync connection.
Cheers,
David
Anyone tried to use the HW of a wireless Mouse?
I do not have one, so I don't know if there is only one Chip for movements and W-connections.
Maybe its possible to rewrite the mouse driver to access the data stream or just use the HW to build up a receiver.
And: The mouse-HW is LOW-POWER and small
Seems to be a real good idea Hopefully it will work
What about a USB-WLAN-Stick?
There're lots of USB-WLAN-Sticks on the market and a Driver should not be impossible to write!
I just opend the XDA-Connector (charging adapter) and found out that is every pin available! A USB-Adapter is easy to build!
Does anyone have some exp. with drivers? Can someone write a USB-devicedriver for WLAN?
Any Ideas?
ok, forget about it.
I'm still collecting information and I forgot about USB-Slave....
Well, I would like to see more results and solutions for this topic!

Connecting USB Flash Drive to Touch

Is it possible to connect a USB Flash Drive to Touch. I want to use USB cable extender to connect the Flash Drive. Does WM6 recognize the USB Flash Drives or not?
it's a little more in depth than a cable, as yet, I have not seen anyone who has figured it out. We are not sure if the drivers for host capability exist, and you will need a speacial cable with all kinds of pulldown resistors and whatnot in order for the device to get power.
no it's the hardware usbchip which dont support it
no work around
Kinda makes me wonder why no one has come up with a small battery powered bluetooth hard drive.. That would be pretty sweet..
Seems like if it was battery powered... it would be dead in five minutes lol

I spoke to Seagate apparently they will only be selling this through the OEM channel. not directly to consumers. So I don't who would carry this and if we can buy it.
But they go upto 60GB.
Anyone knows where we can get it?

a harddrive no but a flash drive should be perfectly within the usb spec this phone is built to it would just be a matter of proper drivers which probably are out their considering their are printer drivers which are much more compicated and no resistors would be required usb is a serial bidirectional interface not like cat5 their is no hardware crossover or anything required

I assume from your explanation that you are trying to use this when you are home? I would just use the Bluetooth FTP or Bluetooth browser and access the PC that way instead of using airtime.
If you want to use it while you are out then there is a device called Slingbox try googling that.
Good luck.

The MSM 7500 is the chip found in the Vogue...check out connectivity...it lists the port as USB OTG.... short for USB on the Go....which means it has limited hosting capabilities.
Even though Windows does support USB OTG Mass Storage, the problem is that the Vogue is not transmitting enough power via the USB port, which according to USB OTG regulations is OK. Which means you have to use specific selfpowered USB devices (most likely labeled as USB OTG compatible), or provide the power by yourself (splicing cable and adding correct AC adapter...).
HTC DOck
how 'bout this one:
http://www.expansys.com/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=145164
kinda big, and I think but here's the info:
Description
Keep the HTC Advantage at hand on a desk and at an ideal viewing angle. The docking station extends the peripheral connectivty of the Advantage and includes:
- A/V interface: VGA (15pin) port, Video out port, S-Video (4 pin) port, 3.5mm audio jack
- Charging & syncing interface: miniUSB port for power charging and synchronization, 2 x USB standard A female port (USB Host), 2nd battery charging slot
- LEDs indicators – 2nd battery, power & sync
Technical Details
(none available)
I'm experimenting with a powered USB Hub... who knows...
I want to buy an HTC Diamond and if it's possible I would use the mini usb port in it like a "host"...so (from the bottom of my lack of knowledge) I'll try to help this "project"...
If I'm not wrong USB On-The-Go is just a "chipset protocol", a feature of its and no more...the only two hdw thinks that a device must have to use it is
1) an AB type port usb (or mini usb as most pdas)
2) a circuit scheme that is able to send 5v to the pin of the port used during the "host mode"
Moreover, on the sfw side, it's necessary to have drivers that recognize and organize the host function of the port...
It's all right?
If I centered the situation I think that the only problem is the lack of 5v power to send to the pin, that's right?
In this case...why don't look (and copy) this?
Then, about the drivers matter, i think is sufficient a look to the others (a few I know) WM devices that already have a native usb host functionality...
I'm sorry if I said a lot of stupid thinks but I said before I just tried to gave an help.
PS: sorry for my english too and (because of this is my first message) Hi all!!!

www.orb.com will do what you want...you don't need a tv tuner to make use of its other capabilities.
Ok, as a lot of you maybe still know NEO1973 will have a USB host functionallity...
Infact it has a USB otg port and it will selled with this option already included.
About that I've found this page: a complete explaination to activate the host function of the port...it could be of any help?

2 quick points:
@dave68 - all of the pieces needed to make a USB flash drive work with the Toshiba E804 PPC (WM2003) already exist - including drivers. All I had to do to make that device work with USB Flash drive and USB HDD was use a powered hub with the WM2003 drivers installed.
@cdred - As already mentioned www.orb.com is one way to go. You will need a PC running the Orb software at home and a way to get to it (i.e. dyndns.org).
The Slingbox is another way to achieve this, or IMHO, the Buffalo LinkStation is a good choice.

RavPower WD01 WIFI Hub With Wireless Bridge Mode

I ordered the RavPower WD01 battery-powered wireless hub with wireless bridge mode when it went on sale for 50% off on Amazon (it's still on sale and here's the link, if you're interested - http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower%C2%AE-RP-WD01-Wireless-WiFi-Disk-Li-Polymer/dp/B00AQUMZRA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362256659&sr=8-1&keywords=ravpower+wd01 ). I wanted the ability to use portable media that I already have with my note and had been contemplating purchasing this unit due to the awkward placement of the proprietary power port that you need to plug OTG cables into. The Ravpower hub solves this issue since it's wireless.
The vendor processed and shipped my order promptly; unfortunately, a snow storm in the Midwestern US delayed the shipping company by several days. I've now had the unit for several days and can only say one word, WOW. This device exceeds my expectations. It's well worth the investment and can be used not only with Android and IOS devices, but with PCs as well.
The WD01 Is a compact device that's slightly smaller than a deck of cards. It's shipped well-protected in a sturdy box with foam enclosures that surround and it.

In addition to the WD01, the box contains a USB charging cable to charge the internal 3000 MAH battery and brief instructions. The battery on my unit was partially charged when I received it so I was able to set it up immediately. The WD01 has a slot for an SD card and a full-sizes USB port that can support flash drives and external hard drives (up to 2T).
The photo I've linked shows a flash drive and an SD card installed, but I have plugged my 2T hard drive and some smaller capacity hard drives into the unit and it could read all of them.
There is a free app that you can download and intall to setup the WD01, but as other reviewers have noted, you don't need it. What you need to do once you power on the device is wait for the WDO1's internal router to complete its power up, which can take a minute or so. Once the blue WIFI indicator light for the router stops blinking go to your note's WIFI settings and you should see a new network beginning with WIFI, click on connect. When prompted for a password, input the default, which is: 11111111. (That's eight 1s.) You can now use your Internet browser to set up your WD01 and I would recommend this method since you can configure more of the features than you can with the app. I also recommend using Dolphin HD or Firefox over the stock browser. Once your note has connected to the WD01 pull up your browser and input the default iP address of the WD01, which is 10.10.10.54 . You'll see the main login page.
The user name, which cannot be changed, is admin. The defaut password empty so just hit enter. This will launch a wizard that will take you through all the settings and allow you to set your own passwords for the device as well as change the default IP address for browser access to settings. You also set up the WD01's wireless bridge mode through the wizard. This feature will allow the WD01 to connect to your router so you can access the Internet via your router while connected to it. A word of warning, however, your mileage may vary with this feature depending on you router. Some routers now support WDS with strong WPA2 encryption, many don't. My router doesn't support WDS so I tested briefly putting my router into bridge repeater mode, but I also had to reduce my encryption down to WEP (with attendant speed reductions). It worked, but I quickly reverted my router back to its previous settings with WPA2 encryption. The wireless bridge feature isn't critical to me. However, when I next upgrade my router I'll make sure it supports WDS with WPA2 encryption. If you set up the wireless bridge mode, you can also configure dynamic dns on the WD01.
Once the wizard has taken you through all the settings, you'll see the main WD01 browser screen.
This allows easy navigation to make changes again to network settings.
You can even search attached media by name.
If you have a file manager that supports SMB, like ES File Explorer, you can use it to view and open files once connected to the WD01.
All files I tested, including audio books, MP3 and MP4 formats opened quickly and played flawlessly.
If you so desire, you can download the free AIRSTOR app to setup the device, but if you don't like bloatware, I recommend against it. The WD01 runs for about 5 hours on its internal battery. Up to 5 devices can connect to it at a time. The range on mine is about 25 feet before the signal gets too weak. I highly recommend this device. It's well worth the money.
FYI - It is on sale at Newegg.com for $40 from a third party. I think a number of similar units will come on the market shortly. However, I picked up one of these.
PS If you need warranty service, newegg is insisting on having the original box.

RAVPower FileHub (RP-WD02)

The RAVPower FileHub (RP-WD02) seems to pitch 3 major features: WiFI Router, Media Sharing and Power Bank. I tested these main features, and as you can see below the device seems to do what it advertises.
- Media Sharing
I loaded a few different MP4 movies on my FileHub (microSD card) and started to stream from other devices, adding one at a time but keeping the prior device still running. I also chose a different video for each device. As a side note, I was able to copy a file directly from a USB thumb drive to the microSD card and the transfer was handled by the FileHub itself.
Devices:
NOTE: FileHub was connected (via wireless) to my home router for internet access.
1) Xbox 360 connected directly to my Linksys router and access the FileHub (via DLNA).
2) Laptop connected to the FileHub via wireless..
3) Nexus 7 connected to the FileHub via wireless.
4) Moto X connected to the FileHub via wireless.
The only time devices 2,3 and 4 had any sort of hiccup was when another devices was first starting to load a movie but it would smooth out quickly. Once the movies were all playing, the 3 devices (#2, #3 and #4 all connected directly to the FileHub via wireless) had no problem streaming 3 different videos at the same time. Device #1 had the most issues but it wasn’t directly connected to the FileHub via wireless -- it was going through another device (older Linksys router) which is likely part of the reason it had issues. Once I stopped devices 2-4, the Xbox (device #1) played the movie with no problem again.
I consider the above a “stress” test, normal use (one or two devices) shouldn’t be a problem at all especially if you connect via wireless directly to the FileHub. I didn't test MP3s or anything else -- if it can handle multiple movie streams, I am sure music / other files aren't an issue.
- WiFi Router / AP / Bridge
I connected the FileHub device directly (via ethernet cable) to my home wifi (Linksys router). Next, I used the Ookla Speedtest.net application on my Nexus 7 tablet and did 3 tests on my home wifi, and 3 test on the filehub. The download speeds, upload speeds and ping time were all within the same variance so the FileHub had no noticeable impact.
In addition to connecting to an Ethernet network, the FileHub can connect to a wireless network that way any devices connected to the FileHub via wireless can still have a connection to the Internet. If you travel this could be a useful way to setup your own wireless network in a hotel.
One thing I did notice, there isn’t really an option to set this up as a true wireless access point where it simply acts as a media converter so that you can connect your wireless device to a wired network. This device always acts as a router/AP combo, so your wireless clients are on an internal (10.10.10.X by default) network. If this device truly could act just as an access point, your wireless client would pick up an IP address from whatever network was on the other side (for my Linksys it would be a 192.168.1.X address). While this may not matter for the average user, I figure I would point it out. I contacted RAVPower support to see if maybe I am missing something.
- PowerBank
Not much to test here, it acts as a 6000 mAh powerbank. Once interesting feature that I didn’t find in the manual, if the device was off and I gave the power button a short press the battery light would turn on and the device would act as a PowerBank without the other capabilities. This could be useful if you want to charge your phone without the device itself being on (which I would assume reduces the power consumption).
Overall I am impressed so far, but am still playing with the device. If you have any questions, or can think of any tests I should consider, please let me know.
Hello.
Thanks for your review.
It's not mentioned ,but it's compatible with microSDXC , it work with my SanDisk Ultra 64 Go UHS-I SDSDQUA-064G-U46A :good:
Hi, nice review
I have a question :
What transfer speeds do you get when copying from a sd-card to a USB connected device? My wd02 takes about 10 min to copy 1 Gb...
Thanks for answering

I am no longer using a standard firmware (don't ask lol) so it really wouldn't be good for me to compare times. Are you doing the internal microSD to USB? Should be quick (in theory) since it is all on the same device.

As the latest (2.000.014) fw seems to have broken some things (compared to 2.000.002 which was preinstalled), I'm asking... Want to share something mouth-watering?

Ah nothing too interesting, I think I had a copy of the 2.000.014 before it was released. What broke on it for you?
2.000.014 apparently preserved passwords set on 2.000.002 but I had to hard reset the device. After that, I found that the "passwd" command would modify /etc/shadow while the "telnetd" would continue using /etc/passwd contents. Bad busybox?
Trying to get my hands on the GPL release now (if such a thing exists).
Shouldn't there be a .030 (for the WD01 there was a .014 too before)? How to get older fw versions?

I wish they did a changelog for updates, I will see if I have an older copy somewhere on one of my drives but other than that I don't know how to get them.

I'll try to get in touch with them (Twitter? E-mail?) to get access to older FW and GPL sources. Over-optimistic, perhaps.

What are you trying to get from the old one? Just curious. I haven't tested the new one much is it broken?
As setting the root password did work with the old FW, and I first took it over to the new one successfully (only to lose it to a factory reset), there clearly must be a difference. I know I cannot easily replace the new busybox with the old one while keeping the rest of the FW, but having the option to downgrade (for science) is somewhat appealing.
Whoa! This thing is super neat! Thanks for the heads up and review!
Few Questions...
I just got one of these and am trying to bend it to my whims. Running into a few problems, though...
1) I can't change the device's IP address to something in the 192.168.0.xxx range. If it could be done, this would ease the issue you mentioned of it not acting as a 'true' router, since it would at least be issuing IP Addresses on the right subnet as the rest of my network. I tried changing the DHCP settings, but that resulted in a hard reset since it wouldn't let me also change the IP address.
2) I'm not sure if this is specific to Xperia devices or not, but in the Storage settings, there's a feature for 'Remote Share' that basically mounts a network share as a folder in the Android file system, so it can be treated as 'local'. I've not had any luck setting the FileHub to play nice with this as of yet. It'd be great to be able to shift my music collection to the FileHub and still have it playable in the usual music players.
3) Most of the time I'm using this on-the-go. How can I maintain my LTE data connection while simultaneously connecting to the FileHub via WiFi?
4) You mentioned not using stock firmware... Where can I find other options? The built-in stuff is servicable, but limited. Might even remedy the IP Address config issue.
While I probably cannot answer your questions, I have another one myself: is there a way to add a USB 3G stick to make the device aware of mobile data networks? (I haven't found any confirmation it could, only a single hint that the WD01 wasn't able - with an older fw.)

I just tried a 3G/4G stick on my Filehub, and while it powered up and appared to obtain a signal, there's really no way for the FileHub to know it's there or what to do with it. Good Idea, though... That'd be a great feature for them to add in the future!
Before connecting, run "lsusb" and "lsmod" as root. Repeat after having connected the USB device. The USB id may give us an idea about what will be needed; I'd not expect support for 3G devices in the kernel, and we might need GPL code from RAV before we can modify the system accordingly.
I vaguely remember a report of attempts to run OpenWRT on the device, but cannot find it anymore. (Was it real at all?)
Nice review. I just purchased this handy little device and put it through some heavy usage for testing and it works great. Only thing I cannot figure out is how to update the firmware or if there even is an update for the firmware. I am currently running on ver 2.000.002. Could anyone else confirm if this is the latest and if not how to update it? TIA
I have 2.000.014 on my WD02 (installed from a FW file d/l'd from RAV), but haven't seen any advantage. If I had access to a flashable 2.000.002 firmware I'd certainly go back!
Note that in the WD01 thread, someone reported a .030 (?) FW that even broke telnet access. RAV is trying to close holes that have been used to improve the device, it seems.

1) If the wifi network you are connecting the filehub to is on the 192.168.0.xx range then your internal network probably can't be the same because basically the filehub would have two networks on two interfaces.
2) I think that is an Xperia setting I don't recall seeing it on my devices.
3) As far as I know you can't since putting it on wifi makes it use that for network connectivity.
4) Best you can do is try to find the older firmware which you can actually telnet to and make config changes on if you know how.
Re older FW: Can someone try and get RAV to publish all of their FW releases, *plus* the overdue GPL pack they have to provide?

Problem with wireless connection
I got my Mini M8s II on 14th July, the WiFi is not working at all, youtube videos pausee, stop or freeze a few seconds later, with kodi, watching movies or TV shows (exodus, salts, Phoenix) is the same problem, get stopped suddenly. I tried changing settings modem Wpa2, wpa+wpa2, wep and the only setup that working is set in Open (no protection) but that is not cool.

Thanks for your experience. Have you tried it with a wired connection? Hope you get it fixed.
Wired it work fine, but the TV Box is far away from my TV.
Again, for the price, this seems to be the better one for me. I hope that the bad wifi can be worked around with an external antenna like the M8S (but I also had to apply a patched fw that someone created).
I need 2G of RAM (even without playing games doesn't take long before it slows down with 1G).
I need BT (headphones, mouse, keyboard)
missing is dual band wifi (would love to offload most of the wifi usage off of 2.4g)
one more USB port would be nice
longer power cord would be nice
external antenna would be nice
Does this box having Android 6 fix the problem where the audio drops every few seconds when passthrough is enabled?
got mine last week, but im having an issue with the language setting, it always changes back to chinese or something like that by itself even without restarting the device, despite that it has been working fine. is anyone having this issue too?
I'm a Chinese, I bought one in China, I do like the spec, exactly what I want,
but I got wifi connection problem too. I try to play movies shared from my PC, and the speed is very unstable, peak could be 3m/s, but 1 or 2 seconds later, it drops to 0, most of the time, speed is under 100k/s
I am asking the seller if there is any ROM update that could fix this problem, he/she said(about half an hour before) that he/she will ask the engineer
I am thinking whether to wait or to return it

They provided an update (rel. 2016-07-19) that fixes the WiFi issues: I get around 40 Mbit downstream easily over WiFi now...
They don't offer the update via OTA right now, it was online for short period but caused problems when downloaded, so they released it and people can copy it to the SD card.

To update:
Extract the 3 files (update.zip, factory_update_param.aml & recovery.img) to the SD Card (root of the SD card, no subfolder please ^^)
start the "update / backup" app on your box
select the update.zip and confirm
box will restart and install the new firmware
Language issue
I am also having the language reset issue.
Whenever I shut the box down after watching tv, the next time that I start the box, it starts with English and then reverts to Chinese after about 45 seconds.
This is a royal pain when you have to change the language back to English every time that you power on the box.
The other thing I've noticed is a long lag in Kodi when moving an external Logitech mouse or entering data with either the built-in or external keyboard.
It definitely stutters.
Otherwise, this would be a great box.
Any fixes for the above issues?
About 10 minutes after the box powered up for the first time, it has found july 4th firmware upgrade (small file about 14mb), then rebooted and almost immediately prompted for July 19th upgrade (430Mb if I remember correctly).
In the old days there was a "project" that had a ISO image of various video samples in all imaginable codecs on AVForums, but I can't find it anymore. Does anyone know if there is something similar with H265 and VP9 files as well? I would want to run through all of the codecs and verify what works and what doesn't.
thanks a lot!
I got OTA and updated my box, the stability feels better, but signal strenth is still not good enough. I tesed it beside router, and it's fast as expected, then put it back to my TV side, where there is a wall between, the speed is poor again. as reference, my phone, oneplus one, can have full wifi speed at the same position. I think Ihave to move my router to a better place
Has anyone found a working root for these S905X boxes yet? If anyone can make it happen I will gladly pay for it.
Does anybody know how to activate ADB via USB with this device? I tried connecting the box to my PC using a special USB cable (offering two Typ-A plugs) but the PC did not find any USB device. So no connection via USB. Without USB connection I cannot activate ADB support. Without ADB support it seems there is no way to have remote access (VNC, RDP etc.) to the box.

Why can't you activate ADB support? Or do you mean a specific support besides ADB debug in the developer options?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67915384&postcount=4
I used ADB over WiFi, I didn't even try to use USB because those boxes without an OTG port can usually just be reached via burning tool, for example...
[email protected] said:
- Unplug power and male USB from the box.
- Load burning tool on the PC
- Press the reset button, keep it pressed and plug in the male USB
- Keep the power lead out at the moment when you see it says on your PC "connected successful" in the burning tool
- Release the button and plug power in

Btw. burning & customization tool hopefully can be used again in the future when they manage to release an IMG of the firmware and not only ZIP files. -.-
Those noname device engineers are still struggling with Marhsmallow, it seems...
