should i do it the manual way? or is one of the apps on the play store(font installer alone or font installer in rom toolbox) a good way to do it?
ive changed fonts in some of my older devices both manually and with font changer
but i havent tried on my gnex, so i dont know how prone is the phone to bricking from changing fonts, specially on 4.2.2
TL: DR= safe to change fonts on 4.2.2?, if so, whats the safest way? manual or font installer?

As long as you're not overwriting the bootloader by changing fonts (which you aren't doing), everything should be ok.

I always either do it manually, or use rom toolbox pro. no point in downloading another app just to do it.

Dude, you're soooooooo right, some ppl think they´re real modders / developers just by downloading zips and flashing them like this was so hard to do.
I've recovered at least 30 "bricked" phones, that just had a bad rom installation, bootloops, etc.
Bricked means BRICKED, like I've had bricked some routers forcing them to accept DD-WRT firmwares, BRICKED means your device won't do sh*t, not even accept or boot or be able to restore it in some way.
What fontchanger had, was the "advanced" feature, you could change all the system fonts if you wanted, but that would cause the device to get stuck on boot animation.
Flashing again the correct fonts would unbrick the phone.
Event though this is my first comment here in xda and I just registered, I've been around here for more than 5 years.

I want to test something, and I have done it before on Skyrocket Galaxy, but forgot exactly how.
I think I used Odin to flashed a modified pit file, and I successfully bricked the SR.
I can't find a gnex pit file to test.

The rom there doesn't have pit file. I can't seem to able to open the img files in there.
Do you guys have a PIT for me to play?
I think I add "1" in one of the partition address in the PIT for SR before.
Thanks
I found this.

You are coming from an HTC device, yes?
A bad radio flash on HTC devices will certainly brick your device.
That is not the case with Samsung devices though. I've seen some individuals with bad radio flashes, and fastboot still works fine to flash a new one.

I don't know if if the Galaxy Nexus suffers from the same issue as the Samsung Moment, but with that phone, flashing a boot.png (on the GN it's the very first static, black and white 'Google' screen when the phone turns on) larger in size that the existing one, or having too many colors, etc would cause an instant perma-brick. I don't know if we're to the point with the GN where we can freely flash that sort of thing, but I know it worked (didn't work?) on the Moment.
The first post here has the list of guidelines for flashing boot.png images that were discovered trial-by-fire by Moment users.
So, are you guys saying it's next to impossible to brick the Galaxy Nexus if just flashing the basic stuff?

You have no idea how relieved that makes me.
I come from an HTC Nexus One and I never once flashed a radio on it, and I didn't wanna mess too much with bootloaders as an incorrect flashing of the two would acquire a brick.
I'm only on user-level (and flashing, of course) so I don't think I'll ever manage to brick it.

Guys -
I installed the Splashtop 2 on my Nexus 7 running AOKP and Trinity Krenel, and it bricked my device twice. Just running the software and suddenly it crashes, then no buttons work. Then the screen starts to flash and it shuts down. I was unable to get into recovery. I need to push a new recovery to get it running back again. This has happen twice today. Anyone else having this issue?
Its bricked?
So you put it in the trash or sent it back to ASUS?
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this is not related to splashtop.
I had an issue using Splashtop 2 today that freaked me out a little. Going from Sharp to Smooth froze my N7 and when it booted back up, which took longer than usual, the speaker made a faint but distinct "hissing" noise then a louder "tap"
Everything is working again but that's never happened before. Not sure I liked Splashtop 2 enough to bother with it after that.

No.. I know how to get out of a jam. The device would not boot afterward the system froze, then rebooting I got stuck at Google screen. Then it wouldn't get into recovery from bootloader I had to flash a new recovery and flash back up. Sounds like it was bricked at the time to me.

I would see why you would say this....however this happened twice when using the new splashtop. My set up or system has not changed in days. Only thing that changed was me installing splashtop. Once I stopped using it and went back to the old one. No issues. Someone else n the market review described the same thing to a t.

Try acessing recovery through boot loader on a healthy N7 and not plugged in, you will find that you can't access recovery. There's quite a few "Q" threads saying that I OC to 1600 and overvolted by 50MHz across the board, and my nexus fried? Why is this??

I seems to be fixed after todays update, but it's still strage that single app could crash the whole device.
Just as the thread reads everyone; Should I take the plunge?

-Motorola Triumph (was bay far the easiest to root, I just downloaded terminal emulator and typed in about 4 commands then BOOM -- ROOT)
-Asus Transformer
Now I'm on a GSM GNex...and I love it! Stock JB is great but I keep wondering if I'm missing anything. The flashaholic in me is VERY tempted and I miss Cyanogenmod--to me it IS Android.
Many of the Dev threads (it seems to me) were about getting JB on the ICS Gnex, but I've already got it.
Any suggestions would be great

The only thing I can think of is backing up your data for things like games. I don't know if google automatically backs that stuff up. So if you get perfect scores on angry birds in space, you would have to play the damn game all over again if you ever had to reset your phone. But maybe I am wrong about that.
And the rooting is super easy. Just run one of the root tools on here, and it pretty much takes care of itself.

Yep for sure you can't restore Angry Birds game scores without root. If you are running Jelly Bean, no application -- not even an Angry Birds backup app -- will allow writing to the system files. It'll back them up, but it won't have permission to restore them. No way no how.

Yes you can restore backups without root. App/game data is not store in /system -- it is stored in /data, and the adb backup command allows you to restore to /data (which is poorly implemented by the way, as one can gain root access based on this and will allow anyone to gain access to your data).
To me, not rooting this phone is like ordering a steak well done. Sure you can enjoy it well done, and yes there is a slight risk when ordering it medium rare, but 99.9% of the time, you're going to be glad you did.

You don't need to root to write to mount system. Unlocked bootloader is enough. "fastboot boot recovery.img" and you can mount the system using clockwork and do all your work through adb. It does prevent things from being changed on the fly, but it all depends on how adamant you are about keeping as stock as possible.
No root, no Titanium Backup...
Can't live without backups that really work...
So, it is not possible for me, to not root any android device I own.
Hey guys..
Straight forward question..
Is it possible to password protect our Download and Recovery modes?
And i mean when you press and hold vol dwn+home+power method. Not through the android software reboot menu.
I want/like this idea because if someone were to steal my phone. They would NEVER be able to flash a custom ROM or even flash a stock ROM img. They would be completely locked out making the device useless to them.
The only way i think they could get past it is by using JTAG to overwrite the download partition with a stock one. But hardly anyone has a JTAG device.
Well this would be awesome. lol
Have at it

that is a great idea indeed.:good:
Very interesting topic, but I think it is impossible to do (Recovery & download) are design to prevent forgotten password issues.
What a pity
Guys i thnk if it can be done
It will be easy to install it on our devices if rooted (stock android)
As companies like sammy ,htc have diff kernals
I thnk we can successfully do this fr nexus ,micromax ,karbonn etc.....
Lets have a try
Ny one tried this before
If so plz gimme a guide of it so that it will b easy fr me
Lemmi try my best fr us to have ultimate theft protection on our android devices
I hope if it wrks google may add it on its future devices
The "ultimative" protection would be:
When a phone is stolen, you can remotely trigger "the suicide button" xD
When it is triggered and the phone receives the command (Even if the phone is running other ROM) it reboots the phone and erases the Bootloader and some other things that are important for the phone to work.
Best. Protection. Ever.
Second thing I could imagine is that phone companies could protect the download mode with a password (12 digits or so).
That password will come printed on one of the manuals when you buy the phone.
If you attempt to flash an image in download mode, you will be prompted for the password.
And, optionally, if you put the password 10 times wrong, it will erase bootloader and etc.
Third idea: The download mode only will prompt for a password (printed on the manual), if you atempt to flash another ROM on it... Because this will change the confidential signature that the old ROM has passed to the download mode.
(I am not sure if this could be done. I'm just saying ideas...)

I followed all the instructions as best I could and it still messed up. is there anything I can do to reset it back to default??
Nothing comes on. no lights, no screen, no sound. only thing I get is if I take out the battery and plug it up i get a led light for about 12 secs.

I know on my old Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) it was practically impossible to brick the phone completely. You could always access download mode to restore the ROM using ODIN.
How to enter download mode on Samsung Galaxy S3
Volume down ,home, and power until the warning.
http://youtu.be/0BJlfbZNB-I
Please note I have no experience flashing ROMs on the S3 as of yet. I plan to flash the new OTA update with root already injected tomorrow.
The first time I flashed a ROM using ODIN, it screwed up somehow and of course the phone didn't work. I was freaking at that point. Then I read about download mode and was able to flash the ROM successfully.
Your best option is jtag. I flashed an incorrect rom and had to replace the main board on my SGS3 as the jtag didn't work for me.

If you click the ROM link that you yourself posted in the OP it's clearly to the international GS3 forum.

I just want to say one thing: If you can somehow enter the download mode (USB jig...), it's NOT a hard brick. It's soft brick.
PS: I don't have S3, I've just seen this thread.
Sorry for my bad English.

I cant get into any kind of menu I have used every button combo I can think of. I also tried to offer it money, drugs and sex....I got nothing...
In the rom thread I used where does it say that the phone was the international version? I called myself reading the thread before I tried anything.

It's from the international section, anything from the international section will brick our phones, they are completely different, they have 4 cores and 1gb ram, we have 2 cores and 2gb ram. The only roms that are safe to flash are the ones in the T-Mobile galaxy s3 section
You can give it all the drugs and sex you want but the only thing that will help it is a jtag

Yes everything else looks fine, just pick a rom from the right section next time

ok thankx alot. So from checking the net my options are to pay 60$ for a jtag, play dumb for t mobile and get it replaced since they wont be able to turn it on. or buy a new phone. Is there any cons to the t mobile rote? I mean what are the chances of it biting my in the rear?
Personally I would get it jtaged. Rather than have Tmobile take care of your mess up and passing the cost on to the rest of their consumers.
