Poor Cell Recption - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys and gals--
So most of us know that the radio in the GNex is not the greatest (for me at least with the gsm variant)
Anyways, I am wondering of there is some sort of software mod I could do to improve this, even at the expense of it taxing the battery a little. If so, maybe even some sort of toggle for it.
Thanks for any pointers.

The best you can do is try different radio versions and see which works best for you in the area where you have service. There are no software apps/mods to increase cell reception, since it's solely based on the radio hardware/firmware.

I don't know much on how the kernel controls the radio, but my idea was since the kernel controls battery use, maybe some extra juice could be put to the radio. Or something like that.

It doesn't work like that. The radio firmware controls the radio hardware. The kernel does not. The only instance where the radio hardware gets a bump in juice (aside from the standard increases when the phone is struggling to maintain a connection) is when making an emergency call. This, too, is hard-coded.

Thanks for the info.
Would be pretty cool though right?

[Q] What exactly is the modem file used for?

An extremely noob question, but what specifically is the modem used for? And what advantage is there to flashing newer version of it?
I see the term "modem" being thrown around a lot, but I never actually found an explanation as to exactly what it does or how it functions with regard to the rest of the system.
It is basically what controlls your data connections. It has been reported that the EC05 modem greatly improves 3G speeds. Not sure what the other benefits are right now. I am sure someone that has played with it can give you a better idea.
It varies from phone to phone. For our phone it controls all CDMA, 4G, and GPS. A newer modem is new firmware which should fix bugs or increase speed. I think it is too soon to know if EC05 offers any significant improvement over EB13. It is definitely better than DI18, if that's what you're on.
Ec05 I has awesome GPS locks and faster 3g speeds for me.

2g/3g/4G Juice defender beta

Anyone use this from the market?
I wanna test out the 2g/3g/4G mode but it's giving me a warning that it could break my data and not able to be restored so I'm too chicken **** to test it.

Yes. Swear by it.
There are plenty of nay-sayers, and no doubt you'll hear from them here. I wouldn't argue the experience they've had, but then, I don't see why they argue mine (and other happy users).
I had terrible problems with battery drain on my Epic 4G. I had a lot of crap running, keeping the radios alive all the time with little junk that was just fine updating in bursts every 15 min. when JD wakes up the cell radio for apps to do some traffic.I'm also not OCD enough to remember to turn my wifi on and off.
Anyway, with JD and my configuration, I sip electrons. Take JD away and... not so much.
Put it on the GN and it seems to be working just as well if not better. I see threads full of people complaining about battery life -- I'm easily getting a day and a half out of mine with moderate use (maybe 20-30 min total talk time, some internet, YouTube, 20 minutes of gaming, and other typical usage). Sitting on standby, I lose about 1% and hour.
When configured properly, I find JD helps a lot, chiefly by automatically managing the radios. Worth it.
But do you specifically use the 2g/3g/4G toggle or do you just have your profile set to turn data off?

Yeah, sorry I wasn't more helpful about that. I only answered your first question
I don't use the specific toggles. I just turn data entirely on and off. I didn't see the benefit of switching specific data modes.
Yes, 3G uses less power than 4G, and 2G less than 3G, but OFF uses the least!
Haha np, I just like to be able to get my emails and mms etc.. At all times.. But hate leaving 4G on..
Just thought it would be perfect to have a profile to turn it to 3g or 2g like 30 seconds after the screen goes off..

Juice Defender is, without a doubt, the worst app I've ever paid for.
I had problems with JD on my SGS but it seems to be working much better on the GN. Stops the battery from draining while I'm not using the device. The main thing I'm using it for is controlling WiFi by location. I only have a few apps enabled with the screen off so it shouldn't be using a lot of data.

I will third that motion. Had nothing but crashes and battery pulls on my SGN. Once JD was removed phone ran smoothly again

JD worked great on my SGS2 and works same way on GN - thanks to JD I loose just 2-3% over night.
I don't know if it's bad configuration or ROM incompatibility for the people that complain about JD.
Anyway, I have seen that 2G/3G/4G option but didn't have time to look around after beta version, anybody care to share a link? I would like to see if 2G is good enough to keep my internet radio going, it's currently killing my battery, like 10-20% per hour. Is there an option to use 3G, but no HSDPA?
When idling, with properly setup JD schedules and triggers and auto-brightness also managed by JD, I get great battery life.

I may as well weigh in with my view on this, as an agreement with both sides. When I had JD Ultimate loaded on both stock and custom ROMs on my Gnex, I undoubtedly saw battery life gains when the phone was idling, and they were significant. However, far too often I would go to unlock the phone, and the touch screen would be unresponsive and I would have to battery pull. Not once has this happened without JD running. A couple of times a day with. So it worked for me, but the instability that came with it was too much to bear, so I uninstalled.

Yea I know it's possible, but I just like that JD manages so many things for me, like auto-brightness, radio schedule or that it automatically enables WiFi when I get home and disables it when I leave and can do the same with Bluetooth if I wanted.
Surely I will uninstall JD when I loose interest in its advantages or when I find a different app that works better for me or when I simply get bored with it.
I only had to pull battery once since I installed it, which is not that bad. If it starts to annoy me, I will get rid of it. But so far it's ok.
My issue is that I don't want something controlling my phone. Too much control. I can all those things myself if need be. Isn't that the whole purpose of Android phones? To have control?

For me, the solution is to use JD to let it manage some boring things for me so I can focus on other more interesting stuff.

This.
Except never had a crash or lockup, never had to pull battery.
I'm a flash maniac, hacker, and mod extensively. I run a lot of crap on my phone. JD does a great job managing things automatically so I get great battery life.
That is, JD ultimate... the free version is way too limited.
Only problem I've ever had is JD bring really slow to turn data on when I wake up the phone, after its been running fora long time (like into the second day). Fixed by stopping and restarting JD most of the time.
Rarely happens because I reboot at least once a day for one reason or another.
Arguing over whether JD is "great" or "crap" is so juvenile. The fact is it world great for some, not for others. This speaks to configuration differences, not JD. Is Supercurio's voodoo sound crap because it doesn't work on some configurations? Of course not.

To offer a different perspective, I don't consider something for which I control the parameters to be "not under my control". I'm not seeing how JD's behavior is any different than the phone automatically connecting to a wifi AP if you leave you're wifi on without you explicitly telling it to connect.
If JD simply enabled some vague power savings through turning the radios on and off, without knowing exactly what triggers the control, I'd stay far away from it too.
Sure, its turning radios on and off, etc. -- exactly as I've instructed it to. I'm in complete control.

[Q] Tests to compare radios

Hello all,
I am currently using JMT x1. I have been having problems with my battery draining quickly. So I put it on airplane mode and the drain drops significantly. Therefore, I thought I'd try a new radio.
I followed the instructions from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400), however, I am not what "tests" to use to compare which radio works best besides looking at signal strength. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Signal strength is going to be your best bet. Usually the stronger the signal the better the reception will be, obviously. There is an app called Speedtest that you can use to see if your upload/download speeds are any faster. It will also ping your phone with different servers - the lower the better.
I went through about 4 radios over the course of a week, testing, testing and even more testing to find the best one for me. From what I understand different radios work better for different locations so you have to determine which works best for you in your area. Good Luck.

[Q] General "ROMing" Questions

Hey guys. I rooted my AT&T S3 recently, using the guide on GalaxyS3Root.com. However, I'm still rather unsatisfied... namely because the performance--especially battery and wifi performance--of this phone isn't that good.
So, I've done some research about ROMs, but I think the best way to do this would be to simply ask more experienced Android users about their advice. Two main questions (I'll bold them in case you don't care about my explanation):
Does anyone know a ROM that has a better "WIFI radio", and has lower power consumption than the stock? Well, no, the battery life part is mostly a no-brainer, I guess, since I'm pretty sure other ROMs do. The main thing is Wifi.
Particularly, the way the WIFI is so unreliable on my campus (GA Tech) is quite annoying. While my iPhone 3GS would seamlessly transitioning to closer wireless hubs in a building, this thing waits until the one that's like half the building away is fully out of range (it stopped being able to use the signal from it a long time ago). Someone on another forum mentioned that some ROMs may use a better WIFI radio ("the software controlling your 3G/WiFi receiver chip"). That's why I'm interested. Unfortunately I don't see any of the ROMs outright stating this information...
Battery life... well, honestly I should probably weed out more bloatware, but I have heard certain ROMs do this better. So before I go picking out weeds, I figured I would ask.
If the answer to the first question is yes, then does anyone have any guides to recommend for getting a ROM up and running easily (ie minimal hassle) and properly (ie nothing left to chance)?
Sorry if this is wall-of-text-ish, and thank you for your assistance.
WiFi is controlled by the kernel. Try anew kernel first
Sent from my A510 using Tapatalk 2
WiFi is kernel level. Try ktoonsez kernel, it has the newest WiFi drivers from Samsung. Also has tons of options to tweak your phone to optimize performance and battery life. Also if your on the stock ROM I recommend you flash a jellybean ROM immediately lol
Thanks for the replies, guys. Is installing a new kernel any more difficult than installing a ROM? Any recommended how-to's?
Also, for that ktoonsez kernel:
Will it work on my 4.0.4 phone? Also, the only thing I found was a code repository. Is there a precompiled version of that kernel? I mean, I've done plenty of C/C++ compiling here and there, but I still kinda don't wanna mess anything up and end up bricking my phone.
Thanks

If you don't have a recovery installed download ROM manager from the market and install cwm.
Then follow the directions in that thread. General kernel flashing procedure is flash kernel, wipe cache & dalvik, fix permissions.

Alright, I went ahead and did it. Installation went pretty smoothly (booting into CWM was the most trouble, just took a few tries..). The device is a bit warm right now, but it may be because I'm charging it. I hope this kernel doesn't eat my battery up more because of some random bugs. I do notice it has some clocking settings, though, which is really good. Namely, being able to set the maximum clock while the screen is off sounds like a pretty nifty power management thing.
Well, I'll be trying it out more over the next few hours.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Next issue:
As for improving battery life in general, does anyone have any app suggestions (app killers, bloatware to get rid of, etc). I already killed allshare (very happily I might add...). I think I saw a list somewhere on these forums, of bloatware it's safe to get rid of, but I'm not sure which particular apps have the most effect.

Hmmm.... well, that kernel didn't solve my wifi problem at all.
The battery life (when idle) went up by a tremendous amount, though, which is great. Android Kernel now hardly ever shows up in my battery monitoring app as one of the largest app drains, and that part is great. Opera seems to be a bit "heavy" on the battery lately, though... may just be Adfree.
I'm not actually sure what the wifi drivers solved. My wifi didn't really seem to perform too much different with them either way, and it certainly didn't improve the GS3's ability to keep a signal with multiple hubs around. I guess Apple is just that far ahead of Samsung when it comes to both their wifi drivers and their wifi hardware (which is sad, because I'm comparing a GS3 to a 3GS). Sigh. At least I'm graduating this semester anyway.
Does anyone have a different suggestion?
Again, thanks for all the help.
In the advanced wifi settings there is an option to ignore weak wifi signals you could try that although I havent had much luck with it, I have three wifi routers in my house to cover the whole house. Also see the below link to deal with tbe bloatware.

Exactly what problem are you having with WiFi? I believe once your phone connects to a router, it stays connected until you disable it or go out of range. I've never heard of any type of computer that keeps scanning for better signals. This would just waste battery life. There may be a 3rd party app out there to do this but I wouldn't be interested in that.
As far as improving reception, there's no software upgrade you can do to improve WiFi reception. I think the only benefit new drivers have is faster to establish connection time. Some cases (including my speck candy shell) ive noticed have interfered with signal strength slightly.

So you say, but that seems to be what my 3GS did, and the battery life on it wasn't bad at all. For instance, I could keep Skype on while talking to my friend throughout a large building with multiple wifi hotspots without hardly any interruptions (elevator aside.. well no sometimes it even worked in there)... and it had an Otterbox case on (a fairly bulky one). Heck, sometimes it even kept Pandora going while I was walking around campus, not even inside of any buildings, and pretty far away from the nearest wifi. On the other hand, the data speeds capped out a bit faster than the GS3... but that wasn't an issue since it was still well over 1-2MB/s.
Compare this to my GS3, which can't even keep Anime Radio playing within that same building. Hell, it can't even Pandora going... which is much more bandwidth-friendly and probably even caches a full song while playing it, so you don't get interruptions during outages. Don't even think about Skype.
I guess the GS3 just has a much weaker WIFI reception, both hardware and software. I think it could be improved if the software controlling it tried to at least immediately jump to another hotspot when the signal started getting too weak.

Yeah, I was just in a bit of a state of denial, I guess. I paid that much money for a "future tech device" that has worse wifi than something that was released well over a year ago. It's a little pathetic... exacerbated all the more by the fact that I'm still using that minimum data plan (~200MB/month) that I was using on my iPhone. I'm not trying to be an iPhone fanboy or anything. It's just that considering the evidence, this is just how it is. I might try getting it back to Best Buy since I'm still under there insurance, and try getting a new one to see if it has better WIFI reception, but it's difficult to do full testing without a control. I'd need to find someone else on campus that has an GS3 and then compare our signals.
Also, I am using a case. It's just an Otterbox Commuter.

It's worth a try. Where is this at? I can't find it.
That is interesting that you get much better performance on an old iPhone 3gs. Not really sure I've seen enough evidence to say the iPhone 3gs has better WiFi hardware than the gs3. Apple has been known to use top of the line hardware everywhere (that's why they're so expensive) so it wouldn't surprise me.
On a more productive note, why not use your mobile data?

Me and my mother have about 1 GB shared between us now, and that just happened recently. Until now, I was pretty much using a 200MB/month (or was it 250... whatever) plan, like I said in my last post. 200MB/month gets raped fast, even trying to use it minimally. Daily usage is pretty much impossible with that little per month. 200/30 is about 6.7 megs maximum per day. That's about 2 songs in Pandora.
I'd try flashing another ROM. Make a nandroid and try aokp, cm10, or slimbean. Its worth a try. I haven't been on the stock ROM since July and I've never had a problem with WiFi.
Advanced wifi settings are located here

Two things:
1. Make sure that the screen lock sound isn't enabled. On flashing a new rom, sometimes I'll forget to disable it and since I can't hear it or maybe it doesn't sound, especially when playing music, it'll almost definitely cause the stutter. Otherwise...
2. Like maschiosoosai said, turning up the clock speed will stop the problem altogether. If your kernel supports it, the "screen off max" frequency is the one you'd want to change first. I've found that around 700MHz (clock speeds vary by kernel) the problem goes from every time to about 50% of the time, and around 900MHz it's gone entirely. It's worth a shot, but you really have to be aware of processes keeping your phone awake and eating up your precious battery life if you choose this as a solution.
Honestly, I've found that my personal favorite solution is to not use my device when I'm listening to music. It keeps my battery going longer, and with my battery as used up as it is, it needs all the help it can get
Is this problem specific to 4.4 or just Galaxy Nexus?
Unluckily it also happens to me in all roms
It is a "click" and I'm used to deal with it...
Right now I m using slim 5.9 with fancy kernel .. What I observed was when I use poweramp the audio does not skip but with Apollo it skips
