[Q] Tests to compare radios - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello all,
I am currently using JMT x1. I have been having problems with my battery draining quickly. So I put it on airplane mode and the drain drops significantly. Therefore, I thought I'd try a new radio.
I followed the instructions from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400), however, I am not what "tests" to use to compare which radio works best besides looking at signal strength. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Signal strength is going to be your best bet. Usually the stronger the signal the better the reception will be, obviously. There is an app called Speedtest that you can use to see if your upload/download speeds are any faster. It will also ping your phone with different servers - the lower the better.
I went through about 4 radios over the course of a week, testing, testing and even more testing to find the best one for me. From what I understand different radios work better for different locations so you have to determine which works best for you in your area. Good Luck.

I agree with Meelocheck's post. You can also try Juice Defender and see if it improves your battery life.

It depends really. I've used on one device and that was true. On the Herc its been fine. I don't have to keep remembering to turn off my radio/wifi/bluetooth.

I'm using the 26.06.02.27_M radio and loving it. My reception used to go up and down between 1-3 bars and now it is 4 bars solid. Battery lasts me 2-3 days with light use.
I heard that radio drains your battery ridiculously fast. Not true I guess?
I've had that radio for about 3 weeks or so and it seems fine on battery usage. Reception seems a lot better, but wifi for me is worse. Sometimes it won't even connect, but that might be the router's fault...
All anecdotal measurements of battery life and wireless performance ...
What radio yields the best battery life and reception varies depending on your geographic location. Unless people in your local area can recommend a specific radio, you are probably best using trial and error. The latest radio will not always yield the best results for your specific location (although is a good a starting point as any).
Anyone in the CA area want to recommend a radio? I've been wondering about this for a while.

[RADIO] The AUS radio (26.06.02.27) is the root of excessive battery drain

There are way too many thread where this is relevant and I think it is important enough to warrant its' own thread. I can confidently confirm the 26.06.02.27 is the source of many battery drain issues. I'd been battling battery drain on standby using CM7 for the past week and narrowed it down to the radio.
If you are using Virtuous or CM7 (I obviously use both), I recommend using either 26.04.02.17 or 26.03.02.26. Both radios are offered here:
http://files.virtuousrom.com/vision/radio/
Please do not discuss HOW to flash radios in this thread. There are many guides on that subject. Mods, if you think this should be part of the other threads, I understand. There's just so much misinformation out there I wanted to make sure to get my findings out there.
Finally some common sense! I too arrived at the conclusion that the radio was the cause of the dramatic battery drain, but only after pulling my hair out and removing most every app and turning off all syncing. I've been on the .26 radio since yesterday and battery is back to normal.
How did you determine that? I've been using this radio for two weeks now and I have not notice any drain. Just last night, I charged my phone at around 30% after two days of use.

Without changing any other configuration, I've done tests over the past few nights with the phone on standby the entire duration without being touched. Using the .27 radio, I was seeing 5-6% drain per hour, versus 1-2% with the .17 and .26 radios. Nothing else changed and my usage was constant.
If you're having success with the .27 radio, you're probably an exception. I suspect most people are going to have problems with it.

You need to take into consideration that these radios perform differently depending on the location of the user which is why it's impossible to determine which radio is actually the "best".

That's not true either, WWE are the "generic" radios that have decent performance in all areas. It's the provider specific radios that generally have the issues.
I do kind of notice more than usual normal drain when I use my phone but when it is on standby it is awesome. I can keep it on standby for 4 hours and the battery will still read 100%. I have flashed the lib files associated with this radio also.

I have been running the .27 radio for a couple weeks and see no excessive drain. I had drain issues a couple times before using the .27 radio but those were determined to be from a stray app and market updating issues.

Oh snap. I just changed to that radio last night. I did notice a bit of battery drain but not as much this morning. I'll continue to use it and see what happens. I've heard that the reception with this radio is apparently really good which is why I'm trying it.
We'll see what happens. Thanks for letting us know, rmk40! Hopefully I fluke out and it doesn't cause excessive battery drain though

Of course but keep in mind this radio was released for the Australia market. No where else yet. So it's not that surprising it's causing drain for most people.
Didn't change much for me. I was hoping for improved reception but didn't get that either
I have to agree with the OP. I flashed the Aus radio to fix my GPS in which it did but having using my phone for like 3 hrs lastnight and draining down to 9% left I had to flash the TMO OTA radio back. After flashing the .26 back and running fix_permissions my GPS is working and my battery life is better.
can anyone make a recovery for this?
.26
for some reason flashing through computer wont work for me -___-
thank you in advance.
I havent noticed a drain using SenseGinger 1.0.1
I updated hoping it would solve gps with newest nightlies but no bueno. My battery has actually improved. I'm on 26 hours with 22% life left on moderate use

Let's put it this way. The .27 does in fact give off a serious battery drain, in certain areas. Seems like us on the west get significant battery drain while those on the east like it more. Maybe?

i live on the west and i do notice a battery drain.
but .27 is the best radio with the fast 4g speeds for me
.26 was horrible when it came to that
going to try .17 and will report back
Update :
4g speed is good. Not as great as .27
Battery so great far is great so I'm happy
Reception is the same so far as well.
Will report back in a few days.

Weird battery readings

Hey guys, so I'm having some odd battery readings depending on what ROM I have installed... For the record my battery life sucks horribly but that's not the point of this. The point is that, on AOSP ROMs such as CM7 and MIUI (not sure if that's considered AOSP but it's not sense which is the main thing..) I have cell stand-by using a ton of my battery, like 50+%, whereas on sense ROMs I have display using like 70+% of battery.. does anyone know if there's a reason for that or if it's just messed up readings or something? Thanks in advanced!
If you're not using the phone, meaning screan is off, cell standby will use the majority of your battery. Whereas if the screen is on because the device is in use, the display will require the most battery. So... are you sure your user habits aren't to account for these differences?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
quite sure, the battery drops at pretty much the same speeds for both, and also i've tried having 3G off for AOSP ROMs all day and even maxed out display settings to try to get it up (just to see what's going on of course) and with the Sense ROMs I have display settings super low :S
That is some strange behavior. All I can say is battery consumption and lag seem to be the primary reasons many users stick to "senseless" ROMs. But you likely know this already...

Haha yeaaaa.... Though the new affinity ROM is super smooth! As smooth as many senseless ROMs! But then there's the battery haha, which is why I ordered a new one I've always had disgustingly bad battery life (max 8 hours on super battery saving ROMs with undervolting) so I'm hoping I've just always had a bad battery and the new one will be good and of larger capacity... And maybe that's why my readings are so wrong? ROM is confused as to where all the juice is going/has gone so it just throws the data somewhere? Just a guess haha
Its been discussed on here before that Sense ROMs just report the battery usage differently than AOSP. Its normal, and I would disregard. As long as you are getting decent battery life on the ROMs, the battery usage details don't really matter.

problem is that I'm not but I'm gonna wait until I get a new battery and see if that's better before going further into figuring out what's going on.. Thanks for that info though!
Did the short battery life come on recently? Bad battery is certainly a possibility. But can also be some sort of network issue. If you local tower is having problems, it can drain your battery fast, particularly if they are doing something to 3G, and your phone is constantly searching for a 3G signal or from 2G/3G. Notice any data reception issues?

Rarely any reception issues, I think it might be a bad battery as ever since stock I'd last maybe max 8 hours with medium-light use. Just never knew that that wasn't good until recently haha

[Q] What are you currently doing to increase battery life?

We all know our GS2 runs out of Battery at a faster rate than what we would like! I'm just curious, what steps do You take to increase battery life, if any.
-Do you use certain apps?
-Do you enable/disable certain things and certain times?

I'm just curious to see what different people do to strengthen their battery.

Im running FK23 leaked rooted with stock kernel. I use powersave mode that comes in stock settings app.
I don't limit cpu. I use phone to txt, play games, youtube, facebook, twitter, and instagram and google play store.
I get around 14+ hours usage.
Also, I try to use WIFI whenever I can. I turn off GPS when not needed. I dont use 4G often as 3G is pretty good on FK23.
Lasts me from 7:45AM to 10:27PM as of now on 1%.
Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

I bought a cheap ($10) extended battery and cover, and a cheap ($9) TPU case/ At 14 hours, I still had 61% battery left. I can get a full legitimate day out of it running 2.3's, but I am going to try JB and ICS again and see where it's at.
I run KingKang with the JB tweaks package. I also modified my build.prop for both performance and battery life. Plus I toggle my 3G on only when I need it. If I have a WiFi signal I'll do the same with that. I average 17 hours but sometimes I get more than 24. Inverted apps not only look great, but help with battery too.

I did the same as you until the fk23 leak came out. Calkulin's v3.0 gb is amazing for battery life, smoothness, and functionality. I was never fully satisfied with any of the ics solutions, stock or custom.
Although the fk23 battery life isnt as good as calkulin, I'm still using it as my daily driver bc it's jellybean and cool, the phone runs well and smooth, and battery is good enough for me.
To answer the op's question, I do the following to help extend my battery life:
1. Leave off all data unless I need to use it (3g, 4g, wifi).
2. Turn of autosync and only sync as needed.
3. Remove bloatware and/or freeze any unnecessary apps (use GSM battery and OS monitor to find battery hog apps).
4. Leave off GPS unless needed.
5. Set screen brightness lower.
Here's a link to my FK23 results over in the battery thread in General:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34924972&postcount=534
I've only owned this phone since after the ICS update, so never tried any GB ROM.
The ICS ROM I've had the most success with is Re-Calked, but FK23 takes it just a step further for me. I know some people have been reporting issues with FK23, but for me it has been rock solid and has been my DD for nearly a week now.
Blu Kuban also did well with battery life, but it is a little over-customized for my liking. I also had some stability issues with BK. I used sleshpics M'ICS build for a while too ... again, over customized for my liking. Good performance and relatively stable. Also, I have never been able to get 4G speeds on any other ROM/kernel like I'm seeing now.
If I'm in an area with a strong cellular signal, I can get over 24h with 3h+ screen time both on and off WiFi. If the cell signal is week, I burn from 5-7%/h so maybe 15-16h if I was there all day ... but that would obv. improve if I threw it into airplane mode.
I have frozen all of the bloatware apps, don't have Google Now activated. Other than that, I allow syncing to occur per default. I don't have FB app installed.
I use auto-brightness most of the time, and I have a dark wallpaper.
dim screen. stay on wifi. that is all.
Honestly, getting use to a dimmed screen made a HUGE difference!!

[Q] 3G Battery Drain

I have noticed that when I am on 3G, my battery drains very rapidly. Usually like 3% a minute. Is there anyway to fix this, if this is abnormal?

There's no fix to signal related drain. There are only two things that can be fixed really:
1. drain related to apps including unwanted prevention of deep sleep - wakelocks are normal
2. drain related to screen - lower brightness
3g drain is related to signal strength which there is no fix and 3g drains faster than wifi. Also, the older the battery, the less of a charge it can handle. If you're in an exceptionally poor signal area sometimes Verizon can get a signal extender. I haven't dealt with that but I've heard that sometimes happens if signal is bad.

More than likley means that the phone isnt getting a good signal, and is using more battery trying to stay connected. You can try updating to the latest radio, and prl. Has it always done this, or did it just start recently?
Though 3% a minute is really fast. I usually am closer to 1% every minute of two of screen on time depending on signal. Keep in mind battery drain is not linear meaning it may seem to drop off faster at different percentages. I don't know the details of this but this may help:

I feel your pain. I work in an area of Tampa that has zero service and I mean ZERO. My phone tries desperately to cling to a signal and the battery drain is mind blowing. It certainly sucks. But i dont really think its Verizons fault. I work on an AirForce Base. Cell phone service is scarce within the whole base. It does seem to be worse for Verizon and Sprint users from the people i had asked about it
Alot of the times my weather app will show totally different locations then where i am, I will pickup the weather forecast for Apollo Beach or Gibsonton(i dont even know where this is)
might be my imagination but i noticed this battery drain using 3G more when i switched to CM10.1(4.21) versus CM10(4.12).
but when on Wifi, my battery usage seems adequate to very good
It is your imagination. ROM has no bearing on 3g drain.
