[Q] Galaxy Nexus - Almost Waterproof?

Droids don't belong in the sink.
Good news, it's ALMOST working. It stayed on, and actually Skype stayed on broadcasting its drop. I panicked, pulled it out, tried to turn it off, pulled battery. Ended up it bootloop.
Flashed a series of images most of the days and finally this process seemed to get me the closest.
1. Flash CWM to boot.
2. Reboot in unlocked fastboot
3. Flash Google stock images
It ACTUALLY booted. I had WiFi, cellular connection and a touch screen.
The touch screen became sluggish, stopped working, my phone restarted itself.
Back to boot loop. Tells me all the hardware is working, just intermittently.
Don't know what else to do.

I'm confused. Is this a story about your phone surviving "water?" Or are you simply looking for help on what to do because your phone is boot looping?
If it's help then it was probably a bad idea to turn the phone back on. Best thing to do is put it in a bag of rice and leave it there for a couple of days for everything to dry. I'm not sure what there is to do now because you already turned it back on and it could of caused permanent damage to your phone. You can put it in a bag of rice and see what happens anyway. You might get lucky.

When you drop any gadget in water, best thing to do is immediately remove the battery and leave it in a bowl of rice for a day or two.

Yup. Absolute worst thing you can do is put the battery back in and turn it on.

all i know is i'll be damned if i ever decide to do a water(or liquid of any kind) test on this phone or any other phone for that matter. phyiscal abuse is a different story....
from my experience, a phone can really take a beating, but when it comes to liquids.. game over!

I should know better. I just wish the person I was Skyping with recorded the demise of my Droid

Just dry it out for a few days, or longer as others have mentioned above, i had a magic that was fully soaked that would boot fine after a few hours of drying but it took almost a week before the touch screen was working stably, i gave it to a friend as i had already replaced it and it went on to be used daily for another couple of years.

I saw somewhere that you can dunk it in rubbing alcohol to displace the water before you put it in rice.

I wouldn't recommend that. I'd recommend opening up the case since warranty shot anyways and pat dry as much as possible, then stick in rice.

water damaged SGS2 bootloop

Hi, earlier this week I jumped in the ocean with my S2 in my pocket. After realizing, a few minutes after... I took it apart, shook out the water, and put in in a bag of rice.
I did not put the battery in rice, it has some small corrosion on it now. When I tested the phone today (3 days later), it turned on. The thing is though, its stuck in a bootloop; I'm running the AOKP rom.
My laptop recognized my phone but couldn't access the internal sd. I put the phone back in the rice for now just in case there's any water left.
Could this be because my battery is damaged? I need some help, Thanks.

The phone boots into ClockWorkMod. I wiped data and cache, also I reflashed the rom.
When I plug the phone into the computer via usb, Windows displays a message saying
"USB Device Not Recognized". The phone also does something weird, it goes into a
factory download mode.
FIXED!
I got my phone to get into ClockWorkMod. I had my rom files in there and darkside super wipe and darkside cache wipe. I flashed them all twice (at first the rom wouldnt flash so I tried again) but now everything is working except when I make calls it sometimes reboots. These phone are indestructible!

Check for water or particles in usb port as a last resort? Id say its f*cked tho bro :/

+1 I'm thinking either way the salt content is going to wreak havoc eventually. Sorry

my sgs2 also just got wet .. i took the battery out blowed hard onto the phone (no homo).. sat infront of the a/c turned the heat on and waved the phone back and forth basicly drying the whole phone without out letting it sit infront of the heater for a long time .. after a few taking the battery out and drying some more it stopped boot looping but the home back search keys wasnt working but after awhile everything started working again... i almost panicked and threw the phone away.. try it maybe you'll get lucky.

For one I'm sure you didn't just go jump in the ocean and have a few min swim with it in your pocket
Way you descrbe it "just got wet" tells me it isn't waterlogged, & you do realize the ocean is salt water? "took the battery out & sat in front of the heater" tells me it likely happened at home, meaning it didmt really "sit" soaked, "home/back buttons didnt work for a bit" tells me water was still in the device, meaning you put the battery in WAY to early, meaning thats ur own risk..
"Almost panicked & threw the phone away" acompanied with the above tells me your a n00b, your post has what relevance really?
Worst case scenario, WARRENTY, use the **** outa it, go after it for everything, thats wat its there for, trust me when its up, youl miss it

Samsung Galaxy Nexus water soaked

Hi
I dropped my phone in a sink filled with tap water. It was dark and I didn't realize my phone was missing for around 15 minutes.
I removed the battery and did not turn it on. I have left it submerged in a container filled with rice and silica gel packets. I have left the container inside a car parked outside under the hot sun. I did not want to risk it leaving in the conventional oven on low heat as suggested by some forums. Any other solution to this?
Unfortunately, my Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket upgraded phone was stolen from my purse within a month of buying it. I purchased the Nexus full price contract free. I cannot buy a new one now and I am desperate for this one to work.
Please can you give more suggestions as to how to get it started? I will not turn it on for another 3-4 days. But any additional help is welcome. How expensive would a professional phone repair take?

just leave it in the rice and silica for a couple days. thats your best chance.

as stated, leave it for several days. a repair could cost any range of price depending on damage. id personally change out the rice every day

It might be too late but immediately take battery out, leave it in zip lock bag in rice as others suggested, in cool area for 1-3 days.
I had similar situation as yours (bought it full price from overseas before Google started selling it, and then it got wet with Shamu in Sea World splashing salt water on it, the phone was gone after it.
I learned the procedure the hard way after that phone was unusable and since then successfully used it on newly bought GN and on son's Vibrant after being drenched in thunderstorms.

If you're technologically inclined, or have a friend or two that are, get them to take the phone apart and let it air dry for about a week. Phones are simple, find the screws, take em out, safely pry the phone apart, carefully separate any ribbon cables from the PCB and tinker with it.

Not making any promises, but these phones are tougher than you think.
Waaaaay back when my hubby left his Droid Eris in his pants it went in the washer...
A full wash cycle later and a weird clunking noise when I turned on the dryer prompted me to check and to my horror there was his brand new phone (maybe 8 weeks old at that point).
Did the same you did, took the battery out and let it soak in rice for a few days. At first it would not turn on with the original battery, but eventually I tried that one again and it worked! There were a few waterspots under the screen, but they went away and it kept working flawlessly for him for almost two years till he retired it.

If the water had anything besides just water in it you will also want to take apart the phone after it has dried and clean the ports and connections with rubbing alcohol at least 95%, using a qtip this will help to prevent/stop erosion

Thank you all for your suggestions. After leaving the phone in rice and silica packets for 2 days I dismantled the phone and let it dry further. I am not confident that I will be able to do the alcohol cleaning required to prevent water erosion/corrosion.
I am going to put the phone together and turn on the phone today. It has been 4 complete days and I hope it is not too early.

You've already done what I would have done. The best thing to do now is to be patient and do not try to put the battery back in too soon. Don't rush the drying by heating the phone. It's probably better to throw the battery out, I wouldn't trust any battery that has been submerged for so long. That said, 15 minutes is quite a long time. You could get lucky, but I would prepare myself for some bad news.

Phone Working
Thank you immensely for all you suggestions!! My phone works...There were a couple of things not working initially. Like the volume button display was not moving when I reduced the volume or increased it. The volume was changing but not the volume status bar.
Anyway, now, after 2 days, that is working too. Everything is working fine. Thank you all for your patience and consolation. Appreciate all your help. :victory:

After 15 minutes in water that is seriously impressive! Any screen damage?

Put in front of fan or can also pour/soak in at least 99% isopropyl alcohol that find in electronics section. Will evaporate the water. Its what is used to clean motherboards and stuff.

Where are all the contacts? - do you mean where the ribbons connect? I dropped minebriefly (10sec) in an outdoor swimming pool - probably some chlorine in water. I don't know where all the contacts are...

Phone got wet!

Bottom half of my phone was submerged in a drink of water for about 6 seconds. I instantly opened the back, removed battery, and dried off everything from the outside. I popped the battery back in and turned device on. Menu and back don't work, haven't tried plugging it in via USB or made a phone call. You think once water comes out the menu and back will work?

You did everything right until you put the battery back in. You should have put in in a bag of rice or ran a blow dyer on low heat. But I've seen plenty of phones come back from water damage. Good luck

I used hair dryer on it for 2 hours and it works flawlessly now.

Hair dryer can spread moisture thru the rest of the device and kill it later. Its really simple and safe just to remove the 5 or 6 screws from the back and take off the black olastic. Hit it again with ur blowdryer just to be safe. U will find there is still quite a bit of moisture under it if you do

Don't use the phone for a day or two and toss it in a container of rice. Put it on top of the fridge for a slight bit of warmth and leave it for a day or two. It will pull all of the remaining moisture out of it.

uh next time you should wait a couple days before attempting to turn it on..
there is always a good chance it will work but chances are something will get fried if you are impatient and try to power it on.. water and electricity aren't a good combo if you haven't already noticed so don't turn it ON. no matter how fast you remove it, water still got inside..

Several years ago I dropped my phone into a bucket of water I was about to mix grout in. I did the same thing you did, and the phone miraculously worked. Over the next week though, individual components malfunctioned one-by-one. I eventually had to buy a new phone. Then 2 years ago I got in a hot tub with my blackberry in my pocket. I didn't realize it until my wife sat next to me and I felt it there. I immediately took the battery out, went inside, took it apart as much as I was able to, placed all 3 major parts in a bucket full of rice, & went tech-free for 48 hours. My abstinence from my phone was somewhat brutal, but it worked flawlessly after that until 7 weeks ago - when I elected to upgrade to Android & bought my SGS3.
I'm not saying you'll have the same experience I did with that 1st phone, but I am saying that time, patience, & rice can work miracles when our expensive high-tech devices meet their ultimate kryptonite. It's like Superman orbiting the sun, good as new!

I've had two phones get submerged, and I can say, step one is always pull battery. Step two should always be leaving it submerged in rice for a minimum of 24 hours. Mine have always come back from the dead and worked.

My phone is working but battery is lasting 1/3rd of it's original life.
Not sure if the water did something to it?

It's saying battery fully charged though. Idk what the problem is. I'm getting a replacement battery now.

Actually I'm noticing that my weather isn't working like it should. Maybe that's why battery is draining?
My weather widget says N/A.

I've had some weird issues like that before. Sometimes, the battery wasn't making a good connection to the phone. Try taking the battery out, using an eraser (on a pencil) and cleaning the contacts on the battery and the phone. Also, I've put a little piece of paper folded up on one side of the battery to force the battery to touch the connectors. I'd get a new battery anyway though, just to be safe. They are cheap.

This happened to me after I updated to LG8 and never started working again. I ended up flashing CM10 because it was broken, clock FC'd every time along with other issues. I don't think this is related to your phone taking a bath.

HTC Desire fell in water, now won't boot.

Hi, my apologies if my HTC is in the wrong forum, not sure where the Desire would fit, if anywhere.
Nonetheless this is a useful phone to me and worked fine till the day I had to jump in a lake to save my 5 year old boy from drowning. Naturally didn't have the time to remove the phone from my pocket before jumping in the lake. Kid was fine after swallowing some water but phone "swallowed" a lot of water. Let it dry in a bag of rice and baking soda for several days to fully dry. But when trying to turn it on, the screen just flickers non stop. However when connecting it to the computer using a USB cable, I get what appears to be a boot screen (see pic in address below). Phone was rooted and run CyanogenMod 7. Maybe someone that's familiar with the procedure could guide me? Tried a couple of the options shown but to no avail. Old but still decent phone, would like to get it working again. I've transferred the sim to another phone and I've saved the micro SD card. Just need to get the phone to boot again. PS: could the battery be toast? Maybe it got shorted when I first tried to turn the phone on while still wet?
Any help is appreciated.

I'd say leave it to dry naturally for a week or so and try again. If no joy then you could try a new screen but it's probably something really tiny and sensitive that cannot be replaced..

It's been 2 months. But I did make a crucial mistake: I tried to turn the phone on while still at the lake. This likely caused more damage than it needed.
However I suspect the issue is with the battery. It won't charge past 3.85 volts. And the display works just fine, once I press the key combo to enter the boot screen as seen in the pic above. Will try and track one down locally, hopefully a shop will be able to test it a battery in the phone before I buy it.
And yes, the boy was fine. But it was a close call. it is amazing how quickly something can go wrong. I neglected the lake rule of staying within arm's reach. Let this be a lesson to anyone with small ones: it only takes seconds for things to go badly wrong, even at a supposedly safe, man made lake intended for kids.
PS: 2 months prior an adult died on the same lake after falling off his boat. Another lesson: invest in swimming lessons. Scary stuff, indeed.

Right, i thought you were seeing that over usb via sdk or something.. You could always try opening it and inspecting for blown components. What damage can be done.. It's already useless.
I still think it's worth leaving it to dry naturally.
