Going to try and build a rom - Sprint LG Optimus G

So ive been interested in learning rom baking for a little now, and since there doesnt seem to be much for the optimus g. i wanted to get started on one, but i have no idea where to start. So if you wonderful people of xda could help me out that would be awesome.

If your extremely new to the concept here us a nice place to play.

Wow this community sucks

Well, that's not a very good way to get information.
It's a slower community. It doesn't see much development anymore and a lot of people have moved on to better phones.
With the 10 or so hours between posts maybe you should have checked out the development section and the ROM Bible and n00b FAQ inside.
If there's something you can't find in those, come on back and we'll see what we can do for you. (I'll answer you to the best of my ability!)
Not trying to be a ****, but have some patience or take the initiative.

[Must read] broken forum

Devs, n00bs, seniors, everyone. Please calm down.
N00bs..read before you post. This is a big cause to recent drama. I read a thread today and the same question was asked and answered on like3 straight pages... this is not called for.
Devs please consider the level of readiness before posting a Rom. My fav developer makes his Rom as close to bug free by having about 10 guys test the Rom before he releases it. Doing this would cut back on n00b questions and stupid posts. I love all you work this is just an idea.
Everyone else please don't fight and make things worse. Help the n00bs with links to forum rules and such.
I make all these mistakes too. But we need to fix it. We are losing our community.

I'll add to this a bit if you don't mind. Any noobs feel free to pm me whatever the question may be and I will try to help. There is no sense starting a new thread because 99%of the time the question has been answered and i honestly I like to help. I don't have time to develop so this is my attempt to give back to a community I got a lot out of. I may not have your answer but will most likely be able to send you in the right direction and knipp is extremely helpful and knowledgeable as well. I personally don't care but don't post a thread like help plz I bricked my phone in the dev section unless you have a pair of flame retardant pants. Look bottom line is I'm here to help if anyone needs it

Also knipp what do you think about starting a kind of all in one place thread similar to what's stickied in the dev section only a little more recent and updated with an faq? I don't know how many times I posted the gingerbread ruu for people recently. If you don't have the time I can do it or certainly help at the very least. Just wanted to get your opinion on this matter

This. It's extremely refreshing when a dev spends good time creating a ROM for a phone. It's nice to be handed a ROM that has been tested and is essentially bug free. I praise the guys that do that, and the guys that stick to their work. Doing it for fun rather than for money.
Of course I'm not expecting a good ROM to fall into our laps, I do like to follow projects from start to finish just as long as the dev(s) are working solely on that project - Like Cyanogen.
I agree about posting ROMs that are fully tested.. but then only 10 or so get to enjoy the ROM until it's stable. It's nice having everyone give feedback because 100 testers is better than 10. But I 100% agree with you, we need to get this community back on track, and we as users can help indefinitely.
We need to remember, not too long ago we we n00bs. I didn't even know what an .apk was. Now I know how to edit and decompile .apks.
Let's help to make this a fun and sharing community again.

[Q] Compiling Android from Source for Evo 4G

I'd like to start poking around a bit with the Android source; but had a few questions and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I just watched XDA's blog regarding compiling Android, but it was all for devices that are made for the native code - and as we all know, the Evo is not one of those.
So I figured before I jump into this and go through all the trouble of setting things up and all, I wanted to ask - what would I need to do differently to compile a flashable zip for my Evo? Obviously I can't go straight from the 4.0.3 source, so where would I be able to find a compatible repository for the Evo?
If I could find something that would work to begin with without any tinkering then that would be great (And then I could break it later while I learn and play around a bit )
Search for a thread in the dev forum by lithid-CM. Its a guide and a good place to start.
Good luck.

Teach me how to dev?

So I've been looking around for any guides to teach me to dev some ROMs and I can't seem to find one that I can follow.
Would somebody be willing to help me learn?

which rom do you want to dev?
I was hoping to do one either based from or as close to the stock ICS as possible.
That would be awesome Matt. I myself have made a couple threads about a Rom or kernal from stock ics but none havent gotten any response from the devs, even though it seems there is much interest in it and that interest seems to be growing too. Myself, like you, would love to learn to dev to help our tiny little community out of anyone could be so kind as to set me in the right direction, especially since we're down to only a few devs and all our roms/kernels are cm based. Btw anyone know what happened to HoNo? His work was looking very promising but it's like he's fallen off the face of the earth

Yeah, I've seen your threads and I agree. That's sort of why I want to learn to dev a ROM. Perhaps if we collaborated on what we have found so far on the subject, we could figure it out somehow.
Not sure if I can find one of the stock ROM tutorials but if you want to start learning to dev you can start with CM to try and get the hang of it. Its a start and you can see if u can find an open source stock ROM to customize after the fact. But here's the link I found for CM custom building.

[Q] Looking to port

I've found quite a few guides and tutorials for porting roms, but still kinda confused :what:. Would love to port some crazy roms to our phones. Heck, I would love to cook a rom too, but it all seems overwhelming :banghead:. Don't exactly know where to start, even though I already know about Chef Central. Is there any guides that describe things with easy to understand processes? Thanks in advanced everyone.

Take a look at the links here, not necessarily porting but they come into play with anything android
