So I've been looking around for any guides to teach me to dev some ROMs and I can't seem to find one that I can follow.
Would somebody be willing to help me learn?

which rom do you want to dev?
I was hoping to do one either based from or as close to the stock ICS as possible.
That would be awesome Matt. I myself have made a couple threads about a Rom or kernal from stock ics but none havent gotten any response from the devs, even though it seems there is much interest in it and that interest seems to be growing too. Myself, like you, would love to learn to dev to help our tiny little community out of anyone could be so kind as to set me in the right direction, especially since we're down to only a few devs and all our roms/kernels are cm based. Btw anyone know what happened to HoNo? His work was looking very promising but it's like he's fallen off the face of the earth

Yeah, I've seen your threads and I agree. That's sort of why I want to learn to dev a ROM. Perhaps if we collaborated on what we have found so far on the subject, we could figure it out somehow.
Not sure if I can find one of the stock ROM tutorials but if you want to start learning to dev you can start with CM to try and get the hang of it. Its a start and you can see if u can find an open source stock ROM to customize after the fact. But here's the link I found for CM custom building.

I've been a "watcher" too long in this community. It's time to contribute back what I can.
I have a server doing nothing, and I'd love to waste as much bandwidth as I can.
If you're a developer for a ROM, and you'd like to have PHP, FTP, perl, sql, etc support, please reply to this thread or message me directly, and I'd be more than happy to get things set up for you ASAP. This is a new device, with a fantastic development community, and I think every developer deserves a chance for success. An email address, along with a website will help accomplish this for determined individuals. I don't plan on ever letting go of the domain names, or the server that I have.
Cheers you guys.
P.S. > Also, if someone wouldn't mind helping keep this thread active by posting articles or links to publishers with books available to teach me how to develop, that would be fantastic. I know this fits a little closer with "General", but its important, I think, that developers get involved in this, because of the huge possibility of misinformation.

I was really, really hoping this thread wasnt going to be moved to general, because now it is probably never going to be read by the developers. If by any chance you know someone who is developing roms for the sgsii, or how to get ahold of people who are, i would love to spearhead this project and get their hosting up asap. I would love to have a website for your rom, a central hub for tools, resources, and links, but i dont have any of the web development knowledge or background to even know what cms software would work best. Ive installed hundreds of vbulletin boards back in the day (when pirating vbulletin and ipb was fun). I know how to use cpanel very well, how to modify apache and php settings, and how to setup mysql, but i guess ive been out of the loop too long. Help me out guys. Lets get a website going for these awesome developers.

Okay, perhaps a new approach. Would someone like to try and help me get a website going with all the important files for the 989? (ODiN, radios, stock roms, drivers, etc).

I think I'm going to need to install some sort of software on my server to host the downloads. Then the guides and descriptions all fall into place. I'm just not sure. I think it'd be a good idea.
I suggest posting on skyrockets (I727 sister device nearly identical) forum as well, in order to really stir interest...

in fact we keep asking people to keep the comments on General, unless they are of development value, then they should reply back to the DEV topic

Is it just me or is there a sudden surge of broken ICS roms being released that don't rework? Am I the only person that find this annoying and cluttering the dev section. I mean I don't know about you guys but I don't wasn't to have to wade through countless broken roms to get to a working one. I mean what's the point of releasing something that doesn't even have basic functionality? You'r thoughts guys?

Well, you see, they are previews. Other developers can get them as well, work on them, and all the devs work on the same project and it's most likly to be finished faster.
It's almost like they are in the development section because they are still being developed.

What?! That's an April fools joke, right? Cause there's no way those can still have work being done on them. I thought ROMs with no signal and odd auto rotations were normal.
On a more serious note I don't mind all the ICS ROMs in the dev section, as said they are still being worked on it's not like they drop 'em and abandon development on them. The devs will get a working kernel whether it's with T989 ICS source when it drops or not but I can only imagine how much time something like that can take even though it may seem simple to some
Now if it was just 1 dev crapping out the same threads I'd say that's cluttering up space

I might agree if they weren't just kangs of a non working base. Atleast use one that you can make calls from imo. A rom that you can make calls from might make more sense. All I'm seeing is people taking raver x's base and retheming it. Meh I guess it is what it is lol!

You dont know what youre talking about because xravers rom is AOSP and all the other ICS Roms are not AOSP.
EDIT: I guess you are referring to the MIUI port since its the only AOSP base ICS rom.
a) thats an alpha of a MIUI port ie nobody promised for it to be fully working
b) xraver was looking for someone else to take that project on.

That's the whole point of the 'development' section. XDA was meant to be a website for developers to help each other develop. The influx of smartphone availability brought people like you thinking the world revolves around them and every dev caters to what they want. That's why the moderators are so anal about people not posting things related to development within the development threads.
Mods, please delete this thread. Ego-centric newbie that doesn't understand the purpose of the forum.

This is not Pimpmyphone.com it is a development site, I don't think it is all the ICS ROMs that are the clutter, I think it is all the NOOBS and people who don't care to learn that are cluttering up the place ...
What the hell are you talking about broken. The only true issue with the i.c.s roms is the auto rotation. That is a kernel issue and is being worked on.In my option these i.c.s roms run better than some G.B.roms IMO.People everyday posted about i.c.s Leak or TMobile said that about it or I'm reading about it's coming.Well we are here, let's help these guys produce the best product for our phones.

Why don't you appreciate what you have? You try to get make a AOSP build. Or an AOSP build from a TouchWIZ kernel. Or at least modify framework.jar or Res to get stuff working. You haven't done any of that. You will see how hard it is. Just enjoy the little things.

Can you guys please help me find a ROM (4.x.x) that is completely bug free? I had to ask this question because I wanted to upgrade from a long time ( I am on 2.3.3 phantom rom) to ICS or JB but all I could find is either alpha or beta version of roms. Most other are direct derivatives of these buggy versions. Something does not work or something is broken in most of them from what I read. So if you can help me by suggesting some roms that I can upgrade to with out experiencing bugs that would help me. Thanks!

Simple and straightforward answer. There's NONE. With less bugs you should ask.
Try some, if you like keep it, if not keep trying. Doesn't hurt to do some tries and research.

Any of the new jb leaks fk23 thru ga10 are pretty good dd if your looking for something along the lines of touchwiz based roms if you like something different then you can try out cm10.1 which Im reading has very good feed back its all about your preferences on what you do with your phone if you like playing with tweaks or if your just someone that wants a simple phone to make calls on ect ect. Theres alot of roms out there that have minimum issues my suggestion is look thru the threads check out the screenshots if it looks like something you may want to run do some light reading thru the thread and see what people are reporting as far as issues.

Sorry you feel that way.
But in the history of the e4gt forums, such threads have not been very fruitful.
Few reasons..
-A bug I experience with a particular ROM, may not be experienced by someone else.
-Something not working on a ROM such as MHL on a rom may not be a big deal for me but may be a "major" bug for someone else.
-Lastly not all developers think alike and some may not be happy when their ROM is not mentioned in such threads..
Thats why such threads are always closed by Mods in this forum. Thus all the negative comments.
Im pretty happy with the one click oden FL16, i might try out the new version. If you want working wimax stick with stock/ touchwiz roms. All ASOP, AKOP, CM10, CM10.1 roms say there 4g works. but really all it does is turn on and look like it works. You will only experience blazing speeds of 750k.

While I understand that, the better way instead of filling this thread with negative comments is to explain that. Then after that, you could report it and link to a thread discussing it :good:
I like cm10.1 right now. If you want something pretty bug free and easy to install get the fk23 or ga10 one clicks. They are pretty much test otas from what I can tell and work well. They are tw based but they got a lot of the ICS and Jb features.

Although I agree, your going tone other get zero response or (and more probable) catch flack about being demanding.
While typically, the android community development is free, everyone has became accustomed to the idea that eta's, change logs, working/not working lists are simply below them. Perhaps in their eyes it is. What I would like to remind everyone is this...time isn't limitless, and can be very valuable to some. If you don't like the community feedback (ie. Asking for these lists; small stuff) than maybe you should just (loosely) develop and/or cook ROMs for your own personal use. Xda is a community... A community built on knowledge, user base, and the good ol' boy system.
Just remember what we are here for. We all own a T989 and want to make our devices outlast even the newer models.

You're assuming that people will read and thus not need to ask. As someone who spent over a year developing for the vibrant I couldn't even count the times that I either directed someone's questions to the op that contained the answer or just ignored the questions all together. Now as just an onlooker who casually flashes I read the op and if I don't see the answer I want I watch the thread and let others ask/answer or do my own research like checking out gerrit or just move on and find something else.
When I was building ROMs I would spend hours at the computer and by the time I got around to posting my work I may have forgotten one or two things so change logs were usually only partial.
Getting the latest software on your phone while free does take a little effort on the part of the user.

Well the reason this is happening is because 4.2 just came out. People are curious to know what works and what doesn't. Devs haven't had enough time to check all of the glitches and bugs. Devs also rely on us for fixing bugs because they don't always have the time to do it.
As per the same questions being asked over and over, people simply don't know what the search button does.

Wow! Someone just makes a basic request and gives thanks to developers, and suddenly everyone is all over him and getting all defensive about developers feelings or something. How did it turn into this??
I kind of agreed with the request as far as how nice it might be to know pros and cons of each rom without reading through pages and pages of useless posts in the dev threads to find out each detail. It seems to me that most developers appreciate it when more people are using their rom (and obviously people appreciate the rom they're using) sooo...it might help people to understand what they're flashing and they might be more likely to flash a rom that they understand from a end-user point of view.
If developers don't want to add a list of what works and what doesn't to the OP, then they don't have to. If developers want to help flashers in their decision-making process (and likely boost the number of people using their rom), then adding such a list might help.
As far as I can tell, that's the end of the story.
So if the Op doesn't state what's working, then people have the right to clutter threads and annoy them, right? Its a win win situation, unless devs like being asked the same question a billion times. It could help keep the clutter to a minimum but its up to the devs. Not that I'm demanding a perfect op, but there are reasons as to why people ask and ask.
1. Too lazy to read.
2. Fast response wanted(see 1)
3. Op doesn't state what's working.
4. Search doesn't always help( at least for me on the xda app.)
5. People want a solution.
