Question about ROM compatiblity - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys, I'd like to start by just saying I'm no stranger to rooting and romming.
I'm about to root my wife's Epic 4g Touch as the latest update is killing Battery Life and Sprint ID is force closing up a storm. I believe latest is FL24.
I found easy root instructions and a tutorial to install Agat recovery. I'm guessing there is no official CWM?
My actual question is this. On my Galaxy Nexus and formerly my HTC Hero I was able to flash any ROM, however on my LG Optimus I had to flash only ROMs that were compatible with the specific radio/baseband. Is this phone similar? And what would be a good stock ROM (includes touchwiz) for someone who's an intermediate techy. She doesn't do this stuff herself but can fix minor quirks.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Modems (radio/baseband) are interchangeable between GB and ICS releases, doesn't matter what ROM you are on. JB modems can only be used with TW JB ROMs though.
Having said that, I kept my wife on GB. calks 3.0 rom. She wanted a different look so now she's on blazerRom. But for the non techies who just want a stable phone, calks GB ROM was the best for stock looks.

Is the JB modem one of the leaked ones? I may go the simple route by just rooting and manually removing Sprint ID since I believe that to be the primary cause of the problems. Maybe get a custom kernel to go with it.

Yes, it's the leaked ones. JB hasn't been officially released yet.

[Q] Root my 2.3.6 or wait for ICS upgrade?

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

If you want to root, root. More than likely you will be able to download the stock ICS rom from here before you get it on your phone. As soon as one person gets it, our awesome devs will be on it like flys on ****, and we will see a stock rooted rom almost immediately.

I was rooted however I dropped my phone last week and had to get a replacement now I am just gonna wait for ICS to drop...
It's all good with me, at least I have my wifi calling and no delay or echo while taking my minibath.
Rooted mine several weeks ago. Tired of waiting for official ICS from T-Mobile and Samsung. Once the official version is released, the devs will have a rooted version available for flashing so you won't have to un-root.

Was on 2.3.6 rooted for months waiting on ICS update. We finally got a rom yesterday that doesn't have any call echo problems, or really any problems. Flashed darkside's newest 4.0.4 rom this morning and have had smooth sailing all day.

+1. Its easy to unroot and return to stock if need be. Till then we have fully functional daily driver ics roms already so what are you waiting for? Take control of your device. That's why you went with android over iOS and wp7 in the first place anyway isnt it?

This is the thread i followed to root. Very simple instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 but yeah same method one has pics one dont.
Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.
Sent from my iced out to perfection GalaxyS2
But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)
Questions go in the Q&A section

Any Vanilla ICS ROMs Coming?

There are already several that have been put for a good couple months. CM9, AOKP, MIUI, etc. Not officially, but will be official once ICS comes out Monday.

Thanks for the repsonse.
Any idea who'd be fastest or what the turnaround time would be with adopting the Sammy ICS drivers? I know a stock rooted Rom usually drops fast but I haven't kept up with CM so I don't know where they're headed with the T989. I tried out one ICS ROM that worked well but the two snags (lag and vmail problems) I had were pretty major and had to go back to stock rooted.

That wouldn't be too bad I guess since I'd get wifi calling and still could remove bloat. CIQ would still be there though. Wouldn't that need Apex or another 3rd party launcher instead of the stock ICS version?
What I really want is a pure Nexus style vanilla ICS ROM. That may not be available until the source comes out. I was thinking devs could get at Samsung's ICS drivers and processes that make it more stable but that may take awhile.

That has got to be one of the most poorly written questions I've ever seen. With a mastery of English like that (did you mean "easiest" when you said "easys"???), how on earth do you hold a job that allows you to afford a smartphone? Holy crap. That seriously makes me sick. What's wrong with our schools...
And it's not even a real question... 'best' isn't an "at everything" thing, or there would only be one ROM, because the rest would all be 'worse'. You need a specific question if you are looking for any kind of meaningful answer.
I'm sad to say I'm interested in the answers to this topic, which is why I read it myself... let me try wording it better so that you don't simply get pummeled by people making fun of you:
Of the Jellybean ROMs out there:
What's the most stable ROM?
What's the ROM closest to stock Google Jellybean?
What's the most built-out, tweak-able Jellybean ROM (including features not in stock Google JB), and how does it compare in stability to the most stable ROM?

Note the Sprint leaks are Touchwiz - should indicate a JB OTA update coming soon if you didn't want to install one custom. The latest ROMS are pretty clean - cleaner than the ICS final release leak for the Epic 4G Touch was, so that may be forthcoming soon.

Should I flash...help

Here's the deal. I have one of the gnex's that had the bad 4g radio and couldn't stay connected to the network logger than 10 minutes. The jb update finally came and fixed. Scared to flash custom Rom in fear old problem might return. Has anyone had one the previously faulty phone and has since flashed a custom Rom with success?

You have nothing to lose but some time if you flash something and don't like it. If the update fixed your problem, almost all custom roms will be using an android version at least equal to what you are running now (most probably newer). You can make a nandroid to restore if you find you have problems with whatever rom you flash. If you don't want to do that, you can always use the factory images posted by google and restore your phone back to the version you are using now. Updated radios probably helped more than anything in a kernel or /system (which is all most custom roms contain - I don't think I've ever seen any that contain radios for the galaxy nexus).

[Discussion] Which Android Version / Samsung Version Do You Run And Why?

Which Android Version / Samsung Version Do You Run And Why?
I decided to try to make this to help prevent that "What ROM is best for me question" and try to save the mods some time so they can do more important things than close those threads.
So my question to you is, which android version do you run? 4.0.4? 4.1.2? 4.2.1? 4.2.2?
Stock Samsung, Stock AOSP? (AOKP, CM, Pacman, Paranoid Android) or MIUI (or any non stock android AOSP ROMs.)
If using Samsung stock or stock based ROMs, which do you prefer? The LJ7 update? MA6? MB1? Or the leaked MC3 update?
Be sure to post why you use this, and which ROM if you want. Be sure not to offend anyone. Maybe this can help people use a different version, try something new, or just to help people find out what they would like to run!
Let it begin!
Sent From My Rooted, S-OFF'd Blackberry Curve using the iOS XDA Application for Android.
To start off, I run stock 4.1.2 (because I love jellybean!) Rooted on MB1. I am still on MB1 because I prefer official updates over leaks. (no offense to sextape, his leaks are awesome!)
I love cm10 4.1.2 but I stay on stock because it is the most stable and I need my phone to work.
Sent From My Rooted, S-OFF'd Blackberry Curve using the iOS XDA Application for Android.
Stock rooted 4.1.1 (LJ7) but with the MC3 modem. I know 4.1.2 is out (MB1) but i like my setup the way it is and not really in the mood to have to redo all my lil hicks here and there for a minuscule upgrade to 4.1.2.
Stock is always best in my experience, best battery life in my opinion, great performance, i like TWiz features, plus whatever "bloatware" i don't like i can always disable or remove. Ran a few CM's and AOKP's in the past and came away so disappointed (though very grateful for the awesome development).
(Guess i could always nandroid, TiBackup as well just in case, flash back stock recovery, and accept the dang OTA nag-ware, but i'm that lazy, plus if it isn't broken, don't fix).

That combination has worked well for me.
It's not as snappy as 4.2.2 aosp/aokp due to bloat, but those roms just can't figure out how make BT hands-free dialing to work. And while S-Voice had quirks, at least it always worked.
