Backing up qcn through QPST for T889 TMOBILE - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ok so I followed the basic steps to create a backup of my qcn and produced a ~250kb file... not sure if this is adequate (size seems small?) but my phone seems to still be working fine so I guess ill share this experience and hope everone can expand or follow my lead to create a safe and secure thread to back up efs/modem/nv/imei
This OP will be updated as processes and verification of reliability stabilize.. not sure if there is already a thread for this but once I can confirm the process I used is adequate than proper thanks will be given and links will be provided....
Still need to confirm each and every step I used is accurate for backing up and restoring EFS/NV/Modem/imei so please be patient as this thread expands to hopefully prepare everyone to not fear the possible borked or mis-flash... I ultimately hope this thread can help everyone prepare a back up of their original stock files so there is no more mistakes without proper backups... if you have backed up any of these files and had success restoring than please feel free to share your solutions

You should also use the Androidmizer app to back up the EFS partition. The size with that app the EFS Backup comes out to be like 20mb or so. Look in the Themes and Apps section.

I've heard that backing up your phone on twirp can back up your esf folder

Titanium Backup/sd card questions

What I did was when I went to a mtd rom the first time I was worried because of the fact that I was going to format eveything. I backed up most of my apps and also a lot of the system files that sounded relevent to the operation of the phone. My question is are these system files dormant and not going to be a problem so I can just delete them?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
when you changed to MTD , based on my understanding from the information provided in the threads here. you basically , non-partitioned your internal memory space. (open-sourced), so basically, if you tried to revive those files that are not mtd format, you would possible have operation problems. i think you may want to keep them as backup.(system image purposes).
Did you restore your system with a nandroid advanced restore? Then you won't need them and can run a new backup if you like.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
No I didn't restore as I didn't need them. I pretty much redownload most of my apps afterwards. I was worried something would get formatted that might have info vital to the phone like account info and so on. I would like to clear them out. Thanks for the responses guys

All the roms have the vital system files.. if they didn't the rom wouldn't boot.

I've sometimes run into issues restoring system files from another ROM, so I usually don't use backups for those.

[Q] Backing up EFS file - I747

I just rooted my phone and as I'm typing this I have the titanium backup running and well..backing up everything on my phone. Now I want to double check with the EFS file. I know that it is really important, especially before I start to flash a custom rom on my phone. So what I'm getting at is where in the world do I find this file and how do I back it up? Like I said all I'm wanting to do is double check this to make sure that it is done properly...any help is greatly appreciated!
Please make sure you are using the search feature. I found the below link within a few seconds.
EFS hold specific information about your phone such as the IMEI, IMSI, Data Settings, etc...
This is also known as an "NV Backup"

I had no idea it was known as NV backup, I'm still new to all of this. Sorry about that mistake, regardless thanks for your help.

There are apps like andromizer and galaxy 2 unlock that will back them up for you and you can move them to you HD or ext SD card as well

Since I'm still getting used to all of this, is there some sort of guide I can use to make sure I'm doing it all properly? Or does the app do it all automatically?

Yes it is. Much better chance of restoring your imei if it gets all jacked up.

Ok so I have downloaded Andromizer and there are quite a few options on there backing up this and backing up that... from this thread that I created its about backing up the EFS folder, that is my main concern. I ran the backup, and it completed within seconds. What I'm getting at is...is that it? Is this all I need to backup or do I need to backup any other information pertinent to being "stock". I just want to make sure everything is perfect before I start flashing a custom rom or messing with kernels. Like I said before, any information is greatly appreciated. I'm open to learning about all of this.

Really besides EFS the only thing you need to do is make a nandroid of your current stock ROM.
After that, get to choosing your first ROM =)

This may seem a little redundant but did the Andromizer app get everything you mentioned before? You had mentioned something about the IMSI and a few other things...did that EFS backup include everything you mentioned? I'm assuming that all of those codes (if that's what they are...) are also important?
I apologize for all of the questions.... this is a learning experience for me lol

I'm not familiar with that app, but all of that data is included in the EFS folder. as long as it backed up the contents of that folder you'll be fine.

I don't believe the other tools backup the memory block needed. They probably back up the efs folder which for our phone is empty.

So the only thing I had to do to backup was this:
To make a backup:
Open Software Download from the Start Clients menu.
Click on the Backup tab.
Make sure your phone is listed under port.
Select the location you want to save your backup.
Click Start and wait for it to finish.
You should now have a QCN file of your NV.
Save the file in a safe place.

I remember my noob days. Believe it or not, it is really this easy on most Samsung devices. Don't nuke it out. As long as you followed the thread thoroughly and did what was instructed you are fine.
I encourage you to do a lot of reading and do not let yourself get panicked over things. Remember...as long as your phone can turn on, you are safe. As long as you read thoroughly and follow instructions, you will be fine. And regardless how confident you are in your skills after some time, remember to follow instructions anyway. Overconfidence will cause you more problems than being a noob who is willing to read.

Enjoy. Since its your first time avoid anything based on Verizon gs3 builds or sprint. Those can be a bit buggy and most new rooters don't want to deal with that...I know I didn't. Try custom and stock based and don't be influenced... Flash what you like and enjoy the good work done here

KTool question???

I've looked and searched and asked in a question form but still haven't found an answer. If you look at KTool app on market it says its in v1.56-beta1 *experimental* special support fort at&t s3 sgh-i747. My question is does the support work for backing up your imei/efs or is it just for flashing/dumping kernels and if so has anyone tried it does it work? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

I have it installed but i don't think it backs it up properly as i get a "nv_data.bin not found in backup". Andromizer is another app and i think it might work better. I also have it backed up these two other ways:

I've backed it up with these two methods as well, just seeing if there was an easier way. I thought KTool didn't work at first either then i ran the check and it found them so i went to root explorer and found the 2 files so i guess it worked if i lose my imei I'll try to restore with it first. I'll have to try andromizer haven't seen it before.

(GUIDE)EFS/Emergency calls only/not registered with network- WHY, WHEN & HOW TO SOLVE
HI Mates, there are already a lot of comments posted about efs. But I think a detail need to talk about. Here we are:
# suddenly you find that your phone is not getting the network. When you try to make a call it says: not registered with network. Problem remains even after restock.
WHY & WHEN
usually it happens while you flash(sometimes dirty) roms often and/or
Switching from AOSP to AOKP to SAMMY vice versa. .
HOW TO SOLVE
as you are flashing roms, naturally you are rooted and you have a root explorer. Roms from 4.1 and later ones automatically creats a efs back up while you flashing a new one. When you found the disturbances, with a root explorer search for the folder "efs_Backup".
The location varies from rom to rom. You may find it under sdcard, may find under /data/media or somewhere else. After you find the folder
Open it
You will find several zip files created in different dates. Those dates are your rom flashed dates.
Choose the right dated one remembering when your phone was fine.
Extract the zip.
Go to /efs
Delete entire contents of the folder.
Go to the efs zip extracted folder.
Selct all and move them to the /efs folder.
Your phone is back as normal!

I have an t999v galaxy s3 and I just lost my IMEI after installing the Dandroid custom rom. Anyone know how to fix this? I have the IMEI from the box still.
Did u create a backup during aroma install?
Or do nvbackup in any way like with terminal or with a app.. there are apps and methods that backup these things to sd card.
Not sure ...not to many people loose imeis

well after trying out ways to get back my imei and my *#06# being completely blank. I decided to go back to wicked v10 rom and it looks like i got back my imei. I did a md5 check before flashing to make sure the file was good and i tried flashing dandroid rom again and my imei goes blank when I do. Guess that dandroid doesn't work on my phone.
