Hello everyone! I'm a first-time Android owner, and so obviously this is my first time rooting and first time installing a ROM. That said, I am reasonably tech savvy and read and reread instructions backwards and forwards before doing anything that could possibly brick my phone, so I was able to get as far as installing EaglesBlood without a hitch.
I ran a Nandroid backup and backed up all my apps and system data using Titanium Backup before installing. My question is this: I'm getting ready to restore all my stuff from TB... Do I restore missing apps + system data, or just the apps?
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere... I swear I looked and didn't find a concrete answer for this particular ROM and this particular phone.

You should also restore app data and I'd you start to get fcs uninstall the offending app and reinstall it without data

I have been flashing roms & kernels for the past few years so I don't think I am a "noob". I am in no means a "know it all" either. I have been using Titanium Backup Pro to backup everything before flashing roms. It's great, but I still end up taking 20 minutes to restore everything back to normal. I have seen other posts about the correct way to backup/restore, but I never get a straight answer on the easiest/correct way. Do I let the market redownload my apps or do I let Titanium? Restore user data, system data? I hear about others restoring everything back to normal like email, texts, passwords etc. Please help.... Thanks

Restoring user downloaded apps is fine, but restoring system data always monkeys everything up.

I've always restored user apps through titanium, but as the guy above me stated hold off on the data. If need be, the apps where you really need the data do them one by one so you know which one fudges up your system, if any do.
Once I know I'm going to switch roms, I always back all user apps up, then after I load the rom I want, I go ahead and run titanium before the market loads anything. It just takes to long for the market to redownload everything, in most instances.

Yea titanium way faster than market attempting to re download plus it always misses some and your days gets congested from 50+ apps trying all install at once

If you want.. you can look into Mybackup root/pro. I always use that to backup my data and apps. It's very straight forward. You can choose DATA and backup sms, mms, android home, settings, playlists etc... then use APP to backup APPS, or APPS +DATA. check it out.. but remember after each backup or restore, restart for best results.

How do you get ti backup on your phone after a new rom is installed, but without accessing the market? most roms dont come with it preinstalled.

Most the time I go to the market and dl it... There were a few devs that did have it in the rom when I had my g2.
Just read that you posted without going to the market. When you buy the pro, its always for dl in the market, just the serial though. So you have to redownload the free version through the market. Don't think there is another way, that I know of.

I will add, that mybackup is pretty cool. I'm not even rooted with a mytouch4gslide and you can still backup everything. With titanium, you have to be rooted.

While I am a large fan of Titanium, I would have to think that not being rooted would restrict it's functionality quite a bit. Anyone care to comment?

There is an option in Titanium Backup to create a Flashable Zip that you can install within Recovery. In Titanium Backup, Press MENU, then press MORE and it'll be on that list.

Huh very interesting. thanks for the tip.
Im guessing we should choose the edify scripting method. would you apply the .zip in the same manner as flashing a rom? via the "install zip from sd card" option?

This is the best way I restore after a wipe:
1. TI Pro for batch USER apps and data only -- do not use batch on system files
2. TI Pro for these system files: bookmarks, user dictionary, and wi-fi access points, only. I only use the "DATA Only" option in Ti Pro for these files.
3. I use from market, Call logs Backup & Restore to get my call logs back.
4. I always do a nandroid before flashing a new rom, and then use AppExtractor (free from market) to go to my nandroid to restore my SMS and MMSs. This works better than using TI Pro for sms and mms restore.
It sounds more complicated than it is. It actually is quite simple. I would simply stay away from using Ti Pro for restoring any system files if you can.
Does anyone sync with drop box after backing up through TB ? I attempted this and got about 80% before it says it fails. Any ideas?

I just rooted today, and everything went alright (as far as I know). I wanted to download a ROM, so I backed up and it went fine. I downloaded the 1/1 nightly build for the CyanogenMod, but I got stuck at the boot screen, so I restored my backup, and tried 12/31. Again I had issues (this time there was something about setups going wrong once I got past the boot screen). I restored my backup and it went fine this time as well. Then I found the 10.0 stable version, and everything went fine, except this time everything was default and none of my previous settings were retained, nor my apps. I attempted to restore again, but now it says:
Couldn't open directory.
No files found.
I'm completely new to everything about this, so a lot of terminology I've found in related help threads has flown over my head. I followed the instructions in qbking77's cyanogenmod installation video. (I'd link this, but I can't because of the spam policy on these forums).
Now I'm wondering if it's possible to restore the files I previously let in my internal sdcard. It'd be awesome if I got some help with this issue, and thanks in advance.
Flashing cm 10.1 or any 4.2 rom moves your internal storage to the 0 folder. There is tons of info about it around here.

Thanks a lot! Follow-up question: how exactly can I apply this knowledge? I've located said folder, but I'm unsure of where to proceed from here.
So are you trying f to restore data from another backup? The no directory coming from your Recovery? Which recovery you using? Also for the future, if you are i treated in. Arrting over data for all you apps with CM builds, you should look into buying Titanium Backup. Little pricey, but after 3 years, I still use everyday (so do most people here)

I previous lay backed up on CWM, before my 3 attempts at downloading the Cyanogen mod. When I attempt to recover from my internal sdcard, it says that the files can't be found or that the sdcard can't be mounted. I had previously downloaded the free version of that, I believe, but I was following the instructions an aforementioned video, which said to use CWM.
Never mind, I've fixed the problem by moving all the contents of the 0 folder into the main phone folder. Thanks!

Well you can backup your data and restore afterwards (use Tianium Backup for this), but the thing is that funky issues come up when you do that. Especially if its across different android versions (ics to jb, etc). I would suggest to just reinput what you can and only restore things like SMS, Calendar events (if not synced), etc, only small things like that
I just rooted my phone and as I'm typing this I have the titanium backup running and well..backing up everything on my phone. Now I want to double check with the EFS file. I know that it is really important, especially before I start to flash a custom rom on my phone. So what I'm getting at is where in the world do I find this file and how do I back it up? Like I said all I'm wanting to do is double check this to make sure that it is done properly...any help is greatly appreciated!
Please make sure you are using the search feature. I found the below link within a few seconds.
EFS hold specific information about your phone such as the IMEI, IMSI, Data Settings, etc...
This is also known as an "NV Backup"

There are apps like andromizer and galaxy 2 unlock that will back them up for you and you can move them to you HD or ext SD card as well

Since I'm still getting used to all of this, is there some sort of guide I can use to make sure I'm doing it all properly? Or does the app do it all automatically?

Ok so I have downloaded Andromizer and there are quite a few options on there backing up this and backing up that... from this thread that I created its about backing up the EFS folder, that is my main concern. I ran the backup, and it completed within seconds. What I'm getting at is...is that it? Is this all I need to backup or do I need to backup any other information pertinent to being "stock". I just want to make sure everything is perfect before I start flashing a custom rom or messing with kernels. Like I said before, any information is greatly appreciated. I'm open to learning about all of this.

Really besides EFS the only thing you need to do is make a nandroid of your current stock ROM.
After that, get to choosing your first ROM =)

This may seem a little redundant but did the Andromizer app get everything you mentioned before? You had mentioned something about the IMSI and a few other things...did that EFS backup include everything you mentioned? I'm assuming that all of those codes (if that's what they are...) are also important?
I apologize for all of the questions.... this is a learning experience for me lol

I'm not familiar with that app, but all of that data is included in the EFS folder. as long as it backed up the contents of that folder you'll be fine.

I don't believe the other tools backup the memory block needed. They probably back up the efs folder which for our phone is empty.

So the only thing I had to do to backup was this:
To make a backup:
Open Software Download from the Start Clients menu.
Click on the Backup tab.
Make sure your phone is listed under port.
Select the location you want to save your backup.
Click Start and wait for it to finish.
You should now have a QCN file of your NV.
Save the file in a safe place.

That's it. Its really that easy. Just always keep a nandroid and your efs backed up and you are good to go

I remember my noob days. Believe it or not, it is really this easy on most Samsung devices. Don't nuke it out. As long as you followed the thread thoroughly and did what was instructed you are fine.
I encourage you to do a lot of reading and do not let yourself get panicked over things. Remember...as long as your phone can turn on, you are safe. As long as you read thoroughly and follow instructions, you will be fine. And regardless how confident you are in your skills after some time, remember to follow instructions anyway. Overconfidence will cause you more problems than being a noob who is willing to read.

Okay sweet! :good: I have a nandroid now and my efs is backed up and both of those are saved to my seperate partition of one of my hard drives conveniently named "Backup". Everything is there! Now I'm going to go read about flashing custom ROMs lol. Thank you everybody for your help, I've learned a lot in the past few days!

Enjoy. Since its your first time avoid anything based on Verizon gs3 builds or sprint. Those can be a bit buggy and most new rooters don't want to deal with that...I know I didn't. Try custom and stock based and don't be influenced... Flash what you like and enjoy the good work done here

So basically, I'm on a ROM, that updates very frequently. Almost all dev say to do a CLEAN install, meaning deleting everything and then flashing the ROM. I'm really sick and tired of re-downloading all apps I had before. Going back into settings tweaking everything, putting back my wallpaper and such. There's got to be an easy way, people tell me having a micro SD slot makes it easier on flashing. Can someone shed some light, theres got to be an easier way then what I've been doing.

Titanium backup. It'll take care of backing up your apps, sms, wifi networks, call log, and accounts no problem. Settings are a bit harder just because there could be minor changes that differ from what you have backed up and could cause conflicts if you we're to restore the different configurations.

You can dirty flash. I still would clean flash after awhile of dirty flashing tho.

I hear, if you do that and reinstall everything with Titanium backup, its not consider a clean install anymore, I could be wrong. Oh do you know how does a micro-SD become handy when flashing roms?

Ugh, whenever I do a dirty flash, I just feel like my phone will just be buggy, even though it might not, it just bugs me alot.
I always restore all user apps with their data and my call logs, sms, and mms using titanium and never have a problem. I use my sd card to put all my backups on to save space.

Just to add in case you need to do a full wipe on internal if you have your pictures music etc on external then it's not a huge problem.

You can back up data in CWM or TWRP recovery, then restore once you flash everything. That will restore everything back to the way you had it, just on the newer rom version (or new rom, depending on what you flashed).
If you hate dirty flashing, back up the apks using rom toolbox or titanium backup (there are many applications).
If you're tired of adjusting the settings, back up app cache/data (may even say app settings depending on which backup application you use) and restore after you flash the rom.
My advice is to just use cwm restore; its easy and I don't have to mess with anything.
Restoring app data into a new build ...(unless using the exact same build )..
Is like unprotected sex...
You might get lucky ...you might not ...or you might get phone VD...
It's up to you really ...LOL..g
