[Q] S-OFF, then how to flash recovery without unlocking the bootloader? - HTC One X

So, i just bought this one X from a tech reviewer, it's s-off and cid is like 111111111111, now how do i flash a custom recovery? Can i simply use the one x toolkit and jump straight to recovery flashing?

I think you still have to unlock the bootloader and flash with fastboot the recovery

As i know, u still have to unlockbootloader, install the custom recovery like CWM through fastboot

As recovery, I recommend TWRP, is better than CWM

i don't think it's possible

I have the same. Unlock bootloader as normal. Use the hassoon toolkit if you like. Enjoy s-off and flash any hboot. I use cwm for recovery. Flash your Rom as usual, you don't need to worry about flashing the boot.img separately when you have s-off.
Enjoy

DONT UNLOCK BOOTLOADER. It's not needed at all, all it will do is destroy your waranty!

If you have only the s-off and if the bootloader is locked, you can't do anything...

Sorry afaik you need a unlocked bootloader at least to flash the custom recovery....its not possible without unlocking it even if you have s-off. You will get errors while flashing it with fastboot.....

Yep, I needed mine unlocked to flash custom recovery.
Assume you read the HTC disclaimer when doing it. If you want to flash then we take the risks.
Technically your warranty is not completely void however if HTC think they can blame a fault on the use of a custom Rom then they probably will. For example if the hw buttons break this obviously is not a Rom problem.

Nope unfortunately not.
don't think so. It is the easiest way and also the official way.
But it can void your warranty (not if you are a developper apparently xD)

No.
But you can install a custom ROM or root the phone without unlocking the bootloader if you can turn off the security check placed on the NAND storage (i.e S-ON). So far devs have not been able to turn off security (i.e S-OFF) on One X, but it will happen eventually. Till then you’ll have to unlock and potentially void your warranty to root or install a custom ROM.
I've rooted all my previous phones but this time I'm waiting for soff.
Am I right in thinking that when soff is released you can unlock your bootloader without htc dev?

With S-Off you don't need to unlock the bootloader to root or install custom ROMs. That is one of the advantages, no bootloader unlock = no warranty issues. I waited for over a month monitoring S-Off development, but it wasn't really going anywhere. Tired of waiting, I just went ahead and unlocked the bootloader.
It took over a year for some HTC devices (i.e Desire) to gain S-Off, so you never know how long it'll take. But hopefully it'll happen soon...

Getting S-OFF is equivalent to unlocking the bootloader.

Locked is S-On if I'm not mistaken. Unlocked is S-Off.

I get your uneasiness, but in the simplest terms, if the bootloader is S-ON and not HTCDev unlocked, it is locked.
You can unlock the bootloader from the HTCDev website, but there are caveats for flashing custom ROMs, namely that the boot.img file needs to be extracted from the ROM and flashed separately using fastboot.
The easier approach is to use the methods outlined to gain S-OFF. This gives you more control not only to flash custom ROMs, but also unsigned radios.
I tried it both ways (HTCDev and S-OFF). I'm much happier being S-OFF.

[Q] I need simple explanation

Hi all,
couple time ago I bought DHD, after few days I have rooted and unlocked bootloader. After that I have tested few custom roms and now I have simple question. Do I have to make my device s-off, because it is still s-on. When I read few instalation instructions I can see that: s-off is required. Or 4ext is required. How can I replace CWM 5.x to 4ext?
Regards, MaPa.
You don't need S-Off. You probably don't need 4ext. It's only that if you're SOn, you need to flash the boot.img from fastboot each time you flash a ROM.
So, s-off and 4ext are needed only for flashing boot.img with out cable ?

No that's not quite right, with s-off you can flash rom direct, no need to flash boot.img at all its done while flashing rom...

S-on and boot.img

Hey guys, I just have a quick question I wanted to get clarified. I'm S-on and HTCDev unlocked. When flashing roms from our development section, do we need to flash the boot.img separately via fastboot? The reason I ask is this is not address specifically in the Rom threads in our section, but looking at the Droid DNA, this appears to be necessary for folks who are s-on.

I have been away from HTC for a bit but to the best that I can recall you can't flash kernels in recovery via S-ON, only with S-OFF.
thus, you flash ROM, then reboot to fastboot flash kernel reboot and touchdown!

You can flash boot from recovery if HTCDev unlocked, no S-off needed. An unlocked S-on is basically like a Nexus device, you can flash everything you SHOULD be flashing . See Koush's post about this https://plus.google.com/103583939320326217147/posts/P1i8qzLfkTm

This is a great explanation and really shows that S-OFF is not a "necessity" as it was before. HTC seems to have listened to concerns regarding DEV Unlock on the One by allowing boot.img to be flashed from recovery.
Thank you for the feedback guys, its been very helpful!
