Unrooted Desire Stuck In bootloop - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried to look for an appropriate thread for this issue but didnt really find a helpful one. However, let me know if there is a thread already for this issue.
My HTC Desire is stuck on bootloop all of a sudden and doesnt go past by HTC splash screen. my hboot is 1.03.xxxx and its unrooted and S-ON. my phone CID is HTC_001.
I would appreciate your help.

In my sig, you can see the 2.3 RUU. Download it, put the PB99IMG.zip on the root of your sd-card, boot in hboot, then select yes.
You will lose all your stuff. (Except things on your sd)

Thanks a million for replying back my friend. However, I wanted to get one clarity before I go ahead, that my phone doesn't boot up so I cant access my SD Card via data cable. Should I put RUU on SD Card by using a card reader and then put it back in phone and reboot in hboot?
Appreciate your help.

Yes. It doesn't matter how you get the zip on your sd-card.

I have put that zip file in SD Card and booted into bootloader. Bootloader reads SD Card but nothing happens then and phone is still in bootloaps if I try to boot it up.

Guess what? It worked. I was making a mistake as I used a Nokia SD Card and that one was not FAT32 formated and thats why Desire Hboot didn't read it.
I formated it FAT32, copied that Zip file and ran it with hboot and it worked.
Thanks a million for replying and helping my friend. God bless you.

You shouldn't have partitioned your sd-card with CWM. Check the guide in my sig if you want to partition again.
So now, does the phone boot? Hboot, anything?

abaaaabbbb63 - I am sorry I keep bugging you all the time. Everything went right and phone came back to normal. I installed 4EXT recovery and and phone booted up quite fine. Then I tried to install a ROM and it didnt get installed when I tried to reboot my phone it didnt rebot and didnt into recovery even. I put that PB99IMG.zip file SD Card and tried to reinstall RUU but it gave an error "cannot roll back hboot' something and then phone got stuck on htc splahs screnn. I installed 4ext recovery via fastboot and wiped everything in wipe section. Then I wanted to reinstall that RUU but this time phone went off and it doesn't turn on. there is no charging led even.

Flash the recovery once again and boot into it. Wipe everything, partition your sdcard, put the ROM on the root of your sdcard and flash.
Try a stable ROM like mildwild. Should work fine.

[Q] How Do I Flash 2.15.x Radio?

I am currently running SkyRaider3 RC3 with a radio 1.00.03.04.06 which has been modified to permit AP tether. How do I flash the newest 2.15.x radio? Just throw the .zip on the SD root and flash it in Clockwork? I am also S-OFF.
Thank you.
Go Here
Download the file in the first post. Place on root of sdcard, meaning /sdcard/. Reboot phone into hboot. It will automatically detect the update and ask if you would like to apply it. Select Yes and let the update commence.
This will take a very long time. Probably 10 min or so. DO NOT PULL YOUR BATTERY OR DO ANYTHING TO DISRUPT THE UPDATE. I suggest putting your phone down, and leaving it there till it's done.
Also, there is no such thing as a stupid question, your just trying to learn, although a search would have probably helped you out
Thank you for replying :]
Loaded that file onto the root of my SD card, restart into hboot, and while it detects the file, it says something about there being something wrong with the image. I can't read it very well - some messages scroll quickly, then disappear, leaving just the hboot menu. Tried redownloading twice and no difference. Strange.
I assume that I'm not supposed to extract anything from PB31IMG.zip?

Your sdcard has to be formatted FAT32. Back ur sdcard up to ur PC and reformat the whole card fat32. Then put all files back on and try again.

Here is a Mac thread discussing FAT32: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?ac=375750
FAT32 is a format which works with both Macs and PCs - should be very easy is the consensus.
I haven't yet flashed the 2.15 radio - have been doing some bandwidth speed tests on my 1.x radio, and speeds seem very solid... not sure if I should bother with the flash after all...
This is very easy is you have S-OFF. just download the PB31IMG.zip file place on root of SD CARD and boot into HBOOT then follow the steps.

hi everyone,if i may ask how is hboot done and also how to turn s-off

Bootloop and no recovery

OK so i just rooted using unrevoked3. all seemed to go fine i had SU and Recovery, so i tried to install rom manager, and then installed recovery image off there. Made a backup of my rom but now the phone wont boot up after rebooting. I cant get into recovery so i cant install my back up. Any ideas people?

try a different micro sd card, the phone might be having difficulty detecting your card hence you cant get to recovery. if that doesn't work. i don't know what will
Thanks for the reply but that didn't work, i can boot into recovery but as soon as i try to select one of the options it just goes to a black screen
Ok so i managed to flash Stock RUU and going to try again wish me luck

Yes. The goldcard is just more needed if you have had a branded phone. With a goldcard you can avoid the cid error when flashing stock rom (aka ruu).

Try formatting /data /system etc and then restore nandroid..

If the backup is on the phone, mount usb in recovery and copy it over from clockwork folder to pc.
Or just run an ruu. Or take the boot.img from it.

Seeing that message booting into hboot is normal, it is the hboot looking for a what I would call a proper/genuine update of sorts.
Btw in your OP you said you formatted "boot", tada, there's ya problem, as I understand it, boot is the kernel, you deleted it, that's why it won't boot no more...
If you have a nandroid restore it, or flash a new Rom.

I may have just flashed my boot with recovery, now what?

So I accidently mis-read a post a fellow XDA member posted and flashed my boot with the recovery.img before I was able to make a backup of my boot.img. So what can I do now? Phone hangs at HTC intor logo, however I can still flash and enter BOOTLOADER.
Would appreciate the help chaps...
Fastboot getvar version-main
Go to fastboot and type that, post outcome. From there on we can find the right RUU for you. Once you have the right ruu you relock the bootloader with
Fastboot oem lock
Then you plug in your device and run the RUU as administrator. First get the version main and don't do anything you can't undo! With an ruu u can get full stock back
If you want to run a custom rom anyway you might as well download one and flash it away and flash the boot that comes with it. I understand if you want to revert back to stock first though, your call

Ok, downloaded the Viper ROM. Placed the .zip on the storage device in a folder named ROM. Extracted boot.img to Android folder, rebooted into Fastboot and flashed the boot.img. Now have cleared all caches and have initiated Viper install, however it's been at 0.00% for 15 minutes and my battery is draining fast! help help, don't want it to switch off while installing.
Also, I wiped the sd card in the Philz recovery - was this a bad idea?

Turn off, plugin make sure the zip is still on your phone if not copy again. Unplug phone before flashing and flash zip from sd card again. Just copy the Rom in the internal storage not in a folder, this could cause problems
Don't worry about battery life it usually charges in recovery and if not there are plenty scripts out there to charge it anyway. The thing to do in these kind of situations is stay calm tomorrow I have time to find the right ruu for you if you still want to return back to stock.

Yes you can do that but you can do a full wipe within the installer as well I recommend doing that. Remember to unplug phone while flashing!! I once had problems with my sensation cause I left the usb in..

Ok, I'm beyond confused now... Just switched phone off while it was updating the Viper ROM - Flashed the boot.img that came with the Viper ROM and my phone just fully booted into HTC Sense... Ermmm, how? lol
Obviously that boot.img works for me, hah.
Will try doing the Custom ROM again.
That's weird.. make a backup!! Then try flash viper. Its the best Rom ive used tell me when it works so I can sleep in peace

Ok, it boots into HTC Sense, however wifi, mobile connected are all not working for some reason...
Understandable that is because of the boot.img. I'm surprised it even booted, try and flash viper now

For some reason I can't get the phone to connect the storage to the PC, tried mounting in recovery but no joy....?
You did install all the drivers? So you lost the zip on the storage well that's no biggie, sometimes all I had to do was close htc sync and plug it in again to connect. Try accessing storage when the phone is fully turned on. Do you have usb debugging on?

Hate to say it, but I just repeatedly troll spammed the mount/unmount option in recovery while plugging and unplugging the USB cable - Seems to have done the trick. Copying fresh Viper .zip over. Fresh flash of recovery and fresh flash of Viper boot.img.
Upwards and onwards...
Fingers crossed, lol
There's an option in recovery to wipe everything in preparation for new ROM installation, should I do that?
P.s. thankyou for helping me me on this appreciate it.
Yes do the wipe to be sure and also the wipe in the installer that's what I did. Haha that's okay, this bed I sleep on on my holiday is crap so I guess you're lucky . Tomorrow I can help you find the right ruu file for if you ever need to return it (warranty) no need flashing the recovery again btw, just zip and boot
You're more than welcome I needed help in the beginning as well, even soft bricked my phone before haha I think we've all been there
Also; don't get discouraged by all the features the viper Rom has, you'll find your way around them sooner or later.

Wanna know the best bit, my one x is second hand so no warranty to return on!! Hardcore, yippee-kai-yayyy! lol
That's great, tinker around with it all you want! It is really fun flashing different roms. Viper Rom even has OTA, over the air updates. You'd have to read the thread for that though. Once you get viper to work.. make a backup!! Also copy that backup folder to your dekstop so you don't lose it and cause you need the boot.img if you ever want to restore

OMG! Viper is flashing.... FINALLY! I'm getting a slight fizzing sensation now...
You are getting there my friend! Read their thread carefully though. When flashing OTA's you need to delete them out of your download folder cause else your recovery might go crazy.those kind of things are good to know!! Well I guess my job is done as I think it will boot up perfectly. Have a nice night and happy flashing
