[Q] How to check my sdcard class? - LG Optimus Me P350

Can som1 please explain how one can check his SDcard's class?
And what's the respective read/write speed of different classes of sdcard? And what's the highest class available from a sdcard..??
Thnx for your valuable rply.

you can check just by looking at card. its class will be mentioned in a circle on sd card itself.... speed = class Mb/sec.

The class refers to the minimum speed the card should provide in read write operations...And the maximum class available in a normal sd card is 10... Even in that different quality exist which promise better speeds...

Time for a new micro sd card

I'm buying a larger SD card in readiness for Froyo (and I need more room for music!).
I've already filled up the 4GB card that came with the phone. Is it simply a case of copying everything from the 4GB card onto a computer, inserting the new card and copying it all back? Or is there some funky protection scheme in some app data which will break everything?
Also, will Eclair be able to format the new card (it's 32GB)? I think Windows 7 only formats fat32 on smaller drives.
Any information or other peoples experiences would be welcome.
If you just have one 4Gb partition it is safe to copy all the files to the new one and it should work without problems (copy also the hidden files).
For the format, Windows 7 can format it. Not sure if fat32 or exFat, but it can format it for sure.
Remember to buy a class 6 sdcard.
it will be much faster.

Just wanted to jump in here to clarify this statement. Higher classes means faster write speeds. There are no difference in read speeds.
Therefore...
- Having a higher class card will not result in better performance in tasks like generating thumbnails when viewing photos in your Photo application.
- If your application is installed on your card, higher classes will not mean faster application performance. Again, read speeds are not affected.
- Having a higher class card will mean you will be able to transfer files from your PC to your card faster.
That being said, you should buy the highest class card you can afford. But you should prioritize capacity over speed.
Tip: Pass on class 2 cards. They may start choking when you use your device to record 720p video.

Zero problems with my Sandisk 16gb Class 2 card. It writes at a sustaining 7.5mb/s, so faster than Class 6 minimums anyway.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks for all the advice guys.
Regarding the class, it has to be class 2 - it's the only thing available in 32GB.
However, as ohyeahar said, it's only write speed. I don't think a 720p stream will be a problem given the benchmarks I've seen for the Sandisk 32GB card. It seems to be writing at 5-7Mb/s so well above the Class 2 minimum.
I'm also buying a new microSDHC card. Should I format it in NTFS or FAT32?

Ah, of course! That must be the correct way of doing it. Thinking of buying the Sandisk Mobile Ultra 16GB or the Transcend Class 6 16GB or A-Data Class 6 16GB.
Any recommendations?
Where is everybody looking to get their memory cards from? I'm currently looking for the best deals and struggling to find any decent ones tbh

I think you are not well informed. Higher class cards also offer higher read speeds and that is very important.
In my phone applications are also writing to card so having a higher class card makes all the difference. especially if you are using it with a swap partition.
I don't have the link to the benchmark right now but I will show you tomorrow the different read/write speeds in different class cards

later edit:
I don't remember exactly the values for read speads but from my tests they were something like this
cls2 15mb/sec
cls4 18mb/sec
cls6 21mb/sec
for me ...speed is everything so class 6 it's my choice

Sorry, but that just isn't the case!
The class of an SD card is purely the minimum sustained write speed that the card will achieve in a completely unfragmented state. It has *nothing* to do with read speeds.
Case to point, here are the benchmarks for two of my MicroSD cards:
16gb Sandisk Class 2
Sequential Read : 20.050 MB/s
Sequential Write : 7.415 MB/s
8gb Transcend Class 6
Sequential Read : 19.938 MB/s
Sequential Write : 15.020 MB/s
Note that the read speeds are almost identical, but the write speed of the class 6 is almost twice the amount. However, the write speed of both cards is well in excess of the class 6 minimums and given that there's far less writing going on than reading, the difference in write speed is practically negligible on the Desire.
Which card do I used in my Desire? The 16gb Class 2 and I experience absolutely no lag whatsoever using my phone, and I'm using Froyo Apps2SD.

Dave

Hmm, maybe because it's a newer generation class 2 card?
perhaps my tests were done with older generation cards that gave out lower speeds.
Now I am curios...I can't wait to get back home and find the tests file.

Yep, Dave is absolutely right, it's purely minimum sustained write speed for that class. And as you can see, his Class 2 card actually exceeds the class 6 spec for writing and isn't far off from Class 8 performance.
Looking around the web, the 32GB class 2 card I bought has similar performance in the benchmarks I've seen to Dave's Class 2 card. Not only that, the benchmarks are done on a PC. I doubt the phone has the I/O bandwidth to actually hit numbers like those in any kind of sustained way.
ok, my bad.
There is a slight difference between different brands (regarding read speed) but not so big.
regarding write speed .... I think that only if you use your sdcard with a swap partition you will see big differences.

[Q] SD Card Class

How do you guys test between class speeds? I see people posting that their class 2 speeds test over class 4 and i'm a bit curious if my class 6 tests where it should.

[Q] query on copying to external sd card

Hi all...had a query...When copying into my desire hd sd card- the average speed is about 2mb/s
Is it normal....any way to improve it?
If your card is a Class 2, then it's normal. If you want faster write speed, upgrade to a Class 4 or even 6 card.
Use a Class 6 SDHC card
Consumer mobile phones come with Class 2 SD cards, with a low read/write speed.
The fasted sdcard is Class 6, which offers very fast readwrite speeds.
but it aslo depends upon your pc hardware at read/writing. if you have a top end pc/laptop that capable of fast transfer speeds then yes you will benefit from a higher class sdcard. but if your hardware is limited then i wouldn't really bother, only saying this as the not cheap to buy esp when you get class 6 or 10 sdcard, mine cost £70 an i don't get that faster transfer speeds but that cause my laptop ****

try asking your local mobile retail shop .. you could also try ebay or something ...
Ps: note that you need a higher class card to record videos in 720p too. Atleast a class 4 is required for recording at 720p

Have a look at the card and check whether you see a 2, 4, 6... in a sort of an open circle (right side of circle is open) printed on it.
did you sd card come with your mobile phone? if so, it is very likely a class 2 sd card.

[Q] SD Card Class Check

I've read many threads about certain apps needing a sd card of class 6.
I am currently using one that came with my HTC desire, which is a 2gb one.
How do i check if my SD card is class 6 or not?
Thanks in advance.
It is usually written on the card you may see a number in a circle. Benchmarking apps can also help, try antutu or sd card tools from the market.

Any advice on which are the best higher class sd cards to purchase, taking into account cost, speed & reliability ?
play.com had a sale on some class 6 8gb cards. i don't know if they still do. i got mine from them.
One of compatible class 10 cards are from A-Data.
I also have class 2 4 GB card, SD tools can't detect the class and selects the "?" radio button. However the read are write speed are 23MB/s and 5.3MB/s. Is this normal?

It depends on the free space on your sdcard...
I have a Lexar 32GB Class 10 and when I have free space of 20GB the read speed is cca 35MB/s and the write sp. is 10MB/s. When a 10GB free space: 25 and 8MB/s.
EDIT: Can somebody confirm that I'm right?
EDIT2: MB/s not GB/s

bro most memory card is sdhc....its just SD high Capacity...if u have more than 4 gb...all are sdhc i think..
And i really dont know why people are using class 10 cards for phones, i think its for dslr and video cameras which require fast writing speed. IMO class 6 is enough for phones. (P.S : Correct me if i am wrong.)

Almost all smartphones these days support upto 32 GB. SDHC means Secure Digital High Capacity, and @ansebovi you are right all memory cards with a memory of 4GB-32GB are SDHC. And our phone will support all SDHC cards. What our phone doesnt support is SDXC cards, its SD Xtended Capacity, used for 64GB+ cards.
@SK:) Its upto you to use the memory card of your choice. If you can afford Class 10 SD cards then its fine, I use a Class 4 SD as its enough for my use. But if you plan on swapping(which in this phone's case,is not really needed) then higher the class the better it gets.....

because i use memory card for swapping, saving app in sd than internal sd....internal sd speed is high...
so to compensate than speed we may need class 10,,..since i m using more than 100apps which are stored in sd..if i use class 6...my phone will lag...since it cant read from sd with high speed.....
price of 32gb class 10 is 1500rs
price of 32gb class 6 is 1350rs
with just 150rs u can get 2xspeed...
now understand?

Yes it will after swapping your external memory becomes internal and vice-versa and then you will be able to install games directly to your swapped internal memory without using folder mount or gl2sd.

Yes dude. 64GB will work almost all devices. (maybe 128, 256...etc)
Even very-lower end phones and basic phones.
But couldn't get its full potential.
I mean we have to use it under FAT32 file system.
I am using windows on my PC, so I don't know about Linux & ext partitions.
If your handset doesn't shows an option to format it, you could use third party partition tools on your PC or even your handset itself.
